Tuesday scent of the day 7/28

Posted by Robin on 28 July 2015 171 Comments

S'mores

Happy Milk Chocolate Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a bit of Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Cream, and I'm packing the car...we leave on vacation shortly. Posting may be lighter than usual until I return on the 8th.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/31, will be Fantasy Vacation Friday: pick a destination and wear the scent that takes you there.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I must get some of that cream after I use up my lotion!
I’m wearing Ellen Tracy Bronze again and I don’t really love it (it’s nice, but I have many that I love more).
Have fun on your vacation, Robin!

Like many folks, I got a bottle of Ellen Tracy Bronze dirt cheap at Ross or Marshalls. I have only tried it once and I like it, but I don’t love it, but I will have to spend more time with it. It reminds me of Royal Violets baby cologne by Agustin Reyes — the version that is a purple liquid with aloe vera. Both of them are violet-centric and they share some ingredients, such as “treemoss” and coumarin, according to their labels.

My SOTD is the only BWF that I like — Bubblegum Chic by Heeley. To quote myself “The notes are supposed to be jasmine, tuberose, white musc, and red fruit. I get an insanely happy strawberry-inflected gardenia that starts off with five minutes of a high-quality bubblegum note.” It smells like the gardenia bush outside of my front door.

This stuff is potent, so I just wear two dabs in the hollow of my neck. It’s supposed to get to 104 degrees today, and Bubblegum Chic blooms nicely in the heat.

I love it despite its annoying name and horrible ad copy 🙂

I envy you your gardenia bush. The closest I can get to that here is my large potted jasmine plant, which is finally summering outdoors just outside my bedroom and is bursting with fragrant blooms now that we’re finally having hot, humid weather.

I like to float a few gardenias in water in a pretty ceramic dish in the bathroom or the bedroom. They perfume the entire room.

I really enjoy your descriptions of all of the fragrant changes that your garden goes through 🙂

Cape Cod is wonderful! We used to go there when I was a kid and I would play Harriet the Spy and try to see into the windows of other vacationers. They disappointed me by being uninvolved in crimes or scandals.

Rose Anonyme is wonderful! I always have to remind myself that the initial yeasty/bready note (on me) disappears quickly – after that, it’s heaven. Nice layered over a leather too (my favorite for layering is Cuir Mauresque).

Rose Anonyme is one of my favorites, mainly because of the addition of the spicy notes. I have relatively few roses but this is the one I love the most. Another in the same vein is Perles de Lalique.

Hope you all have a great time Robin!

I started the day in Si Lolita, which is unbelievably light. Good thing that, as my parcel arrived with a fb of MFK Absolue pour le Soir. I’ve been craving this for years now, and it’s more delicious than I remember. I worried slightly that I may have to bear the cumin heavy opening until the creamy dreamy part began, but it seems my cumin tolerance levels have increased somewhat. It’s aaaalllll delicious 🙂

        Hey Waterdragon 🙂
Yep, saw your post. I cant believe they confiscated your samples- that’s just rude 🙁 I’ve never had a problem receiving any of my orders. If you’re making a list, I also order things from Parfum1. And if you’re on their mailing list there’s often 20% off sales.
I’m not sure what niche brands you have available to you there, but in Aus Maison Francis Kurkdjian is available at Mecca Cosmetica, so if you are ever on Aussie shores pop in and have a sniff 🙂 they also have Eau d’italie, Lutens, CdG, Diptyque, Malle, LeLabo, Tocca and a few others.

I got my bell jar a couple of years ago. I do still really like it, and wearing it today has made me realise that I’m far fonder of it than I thought.
I find a lot of SL’s a little dense, no room to breathe in there. Arabie being a prime example. But then I’ve never liked Arabie.

I’m wearing Mr Vetiver by Une Nuit a Bali for the first time and I like it a lot. It’s nothing too elaborate, mostly vetiver and cardamom and some citrus in the beginning, but it’s lovely to wear – suits the cool and grey weather as well. I have a feeling that some milk chocolate might be helpful in these circumstances as well…

I’m continuing on sampling my BPAL imps. Today it’s Siren. I’m liking it so far, the notes as described by the BPAL website are “White ginger, jasmine, and a touch of vanilla and apricot.” It may be more appropriate for a cooler time of year. I find that I really like perfume oils. I’ve gotten samples from BPAL and Possets, and while they don’t have a lot of sillage, they do have good staying power.

I’m not getting much don’t this morning and am running very slowly for some reason. The kittens are NOT running slowly at all and poor Mr. B is following me around purring and hissing, asking me to sit down so he can snuggle. He hasn’t ever seemed to learn that hissing and growling aren’t normal cat conversational sounds.
Decided to try Balenciaga again. I like it again today but it still isn’t very me. So far, my response to this fragrance has been no, no, maybe, no, yes, maybe, yes, yes, maybe. I think I may pick up a bottle if I see it again on clearance someplace as I seem to be using up samples quickly.

I have an eye exam this afternoon so have not decided what to wear yet. Recent sniffing has included various Amouage attar samples over the weekend, BK Rose Oud for Sunday afternoon and evening, Lucien Lelong Orgueil yesterday, and Chanel Coco for bed last night. Olfactory stimulation to make up for the boredom of mostly staying indoors due to the heat and humidity.

It reminds me of old Caron Bellodgia, less carnation and more generalized floral, slightly more of the animalic musk skin scent undertones. Very 1940s.

For some strange reason I wanted something warm and spicy today, even though it’s going to be hot-ish. SOTD is SSS Rose Musc. I just totally adore the labdanum in this. It is one of the best rose, spices and woods fragrances in my collection.

Rose Musc is wonderful and you smell amazing! And even though it’s disgusting and hot and humid in my neck of the woods, I’ve been inching towards warm and/or spicy, too. (Not that I’m ready for summer to be over yet.)

It’s like craving white flowers and greens in the middle of winter. My nose is ready for cool fall fragrance weather, even though I certainly do not want summer to end. It’s not too bad with heat where I am – it’s only tolerable b/c it gets cool at night.

I always want BWFs in winter.

But all I got out of Rose Musc is a light powdery rose… wonder if some musk is blocking a good bit of it. (I don’t have any trouble smelling Sienna Musk, for example, but I do have the sense that something is missing from the rose one.)

It seems like a good guess b/c that happens to me too. I get a big rose out of Rose Musc too, and more “dust” than powder, which I love. This version of Rose Musc is earlier, and she’s using a different labdanum than the one in the formula now. But they are really almost identical in all other aspects. I have one of those little 3 ml sprayers of the current Rose Musk too. But the labdanum in the old version, OMG, it smells like cinnamon on heat to me. It is totally swoon worthy. As far as musk, in the past I’ve had troubles with musk blocking in a few of the mods that I smelled from SSS, but thankfully not in Rose Musc.

Swoon is a word I learned here on NST, and it is one of my favourite English words! In Dutch the word for it is ‘zwijmelen’, or ‘in katzwijm vallen’. Both mean to lose consciouness for a short moment because of extreme pleasure and the root of it is zwijmen (close to swoon don’t you think)…the last one refers to a cat that shortly loses consciousness after a fall (I have never noticed that with my cat b.t.w.)
And swoonworthy scents would be a great Friday project!

Swoon is indeed a wonderful word. When I was young, I always wanted to be the sort of delicate maiden who could swoon away, but alas! I’m a robust type, and swooning does not seem to be one of my talents. I can, however, be transported, and that maybe comes a wee bit close?

I sprayed my Eau Suave with abandon today, just refreshed a bit ago, and for once I can actually smell myself. I usually don’t spray quite this much, but I’ve already had three people say how much they liked it. Okay, it’s late, but I’ve found it. Maybe it’s good that it’s late, because the story isn’t as funny as I remembered. It’s about Lucien Lelong’s Tailspin, which I thought smelled of
“delectable herbal gummy bear up top. There was something else lurking in there, my wife thought coffee liqueur and I thought burnt sugar, but something warmer and sweeter for sure. But it hasn’t really come up, even now after at least six hours, probably longer.” And the story:

At the corner store this morning, there was a person in line talking constantly to everyone about everything who paused to ask, “Who smells like that?”

No one replied, so she asked a gentleman next to me, “Is it you?”

            He thought not.

She turned to me and said, “So it’s you.” Then definitively, “Cologne.”

I was dumbstruck for the millisecond it took her to move on to the next topic.

It made me think that perhaps this scent is much stronger to others than it is to me. I didn’t notice anyone else’s fragrance in that shop, so it’s quite possible she was responding to my Tailspin.

She sounds plain impertinent to me! Talk about personal comments to utter strangers! “Who smells like that?”, forsooth!

Do you possess A Look? If I had been in your position, I would have unleashed my Look, which functions rather like turning the thermostat on a refrigerator towards “Cold”, and I would have recommended that she learn to be rather less rag-mannered!

Morena ki a koutou katoa — it’s te reo Maori week, and I have just wished you all a good morning.
I have a hard meeting this afternoon, so I’ve chosen number 19 as well. I’m hoping its gorgeous assertiveness will empower me as I engage wits with a wily accountant who is trying to winkle money out of one of our budget lines. Honestly, why me? Nature designed me to be a teacher, not to be a fussock over budgets and STUFF. I’m wrestling with an increasingly strong desire to retreat to the classroom for the last couple of years of my working life. Sorry — I shouldn’t moan. Nineteen is beginning to work its customary magic, and my spirits are lifting accordingly.

Ngā mihi mahana. Kia pai tou ra. (Warm regards. Have a nice day.)

Oh — te reo is the language of the Maori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa, and one of the official languages of A-NZ. It is possible for children to attend full immersion language schools, and all efforts are made to preserve the language as an essential carrier of culture. This week each year, the whole whole nation makes an effort (I should have beer trying harder) to learn and use even a little of the reo.

Oh, crikey–the complication! So many different tongues for you to preserve. Te reo is the one language, with small(-ish) regional differences in pronunciation. Maori from A-NZ can understand most of the nations of Polynesia, and vice versa of course. But if the United States would do something like that, it would be wonderful for visitors. I made myself extremely unpopular on my first visit to the Grand Canyon by asking why all the places of note were designated with English names or classical references, and what the “real” names were. Ouch! I didn’t mean to be offensive (though I clearly was: sorry!)–it’s just so different from home, and I was curious. And clumsy. Several Americans near by got really quite animated with me about the matter. Mind you, they were all determined that I had to be English, so it’s not like the cultural confusion was one-sided!

          • leathermountain says:
            28 July 2015 at 10:51 pm

I wish more people would ask about the real place names around here. Though I would have no answers, at least not the first time.

Any idea why the indigenous languages vary less across A-NZ and Polynesia than they do across North America, for example?

That said, I’m still thinking it’s more suited to be a room spray/air freshener than a perfume. At least it was only $8. I got Green Tea Honeysuckle shortly after (that was what I was actually looking for when I got the Camellia), and I like the honeysuckle much better (and kind of wish I’d worn it today instead).

Lucky for me, I developed an even stronger like for patchouli after a student accidentally shattered a large-ish vial of the essential oil on our wooden classroom floor. You know, the kind that gets oiled once a year and really soaks up oils. Unlucky for them, some of the other denizens of the school didn’t like it so much. One person thought that end of the hallway smelled like aftershave for a few months.

Somewhere above people were talking about season inappropriate perfume cravings and so, right in the middle of winter I am hankering after white florals and greens! Perhaps it has to do with the fact that during the last summer I could tolerate nothing except citrus and vetiver?

I read what you wrote as Orientals, Feathers, Amber then I came to a complete stop because I was intrigued by Feathers then I moved on after realizing my mistake!

Merlin, apart from my wearing my new purchase of Absolue pour le Soir, my whole winter so far has been green green green! Lots of fresh crisp florals, citrus, vetiver.. all my hot weather scents basically. For the most part I cant even contemplate my usual cozy winter staples, like Divin Enfant! :-/ I do find that each summer/winter my preferences are slightly different to the one before, so maybe it is just my winter 2015 theme. Poor neglected winter faves though 🙁

Perthgirl, my DE has been likewise forgotten! And all the more such scents as Alchimie, Ambre Russie, Addict…

I’m quite seriously thinking of getting Safari for the season!

I needed to go big or stay home today. So I went with Paloma Picasso.

Hope you have a lovely vacay, Robin!

I went another round with Serge Lutens Chergui today. I have owned my bottle for about 2 years now. Over the winter I added 2-3 drops of quite fine Ylang-Ylang essential oil in a desperate attempt to render something that did not smell like someone put their pipe out in my delicious pastry. It worked! Now Chergui is a seemly blend of tobacco, honey and more benzoin to my nose then amber. The dry down is quite lovely, similar to Givency Pi. Also a fragrance that may work better in Summer then in Winter.

I am wearing vintage Fracas edp, I found this beauty recently at an estate sale. I was going to pass since I already have the current one, but I am so glad I didn’t. It is really wonderful, I don’t know how to explain but the vintage melts better with my skin and it is smoother.

    SOTD = JAR Golconda

I was thinking of wearing ISM this morning but my atomizer was not in its usual place. I chose Golconda instead because I love it and in fact, worked well in the heat.
