It's almost Friday! If you have a minute, do tell us your fragrance of the day.
I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's l’Opera des Rouges et des Roses.
Reminder: this Friday, 7/24, will be Perfume Surprise Friday...wear a fragrance you expected to hate but loved, or, give another chance to a perfume you expected to love but hated, or surprise us with another interpretation of "perfume surprise".
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Annick Goutal’s Le Chevrefeuille. My first niche purchase, and first blind buy, inspired by your review. Luckily I loved it on first sniff and still do to this day.
So glad it worked!
Le Chev is so lovely…. on me it’s like honeysuckle iced tea
Just got a sample of this. So pretty. You smell great!
Love your avatar! Pepe is perfect for this type of forum.
Royal Oud (Creed)
I hope it is as majestic as its name
In the mood for Serge Lutens all week: Santal Blanc on Monday, Feminité du Bois on Tuesday, Douce Amère yesterday, Chergui today. Every one of them recognizably a Lutens, I think. Don’t know what I’ll wear tomorrow: I guess I’ll have to break the streak.
There is one Lutens that surprised you, surely?? Even if only by being not so lovely as SB, FdB, DA & Chergui?
Ever since I started really wearing Lutens I was never surprised to like something, because I always expected to: his tastes are mostly very much in line with my own, at least for the first fifteen years of his career.
There are some Lutenses that I was surprised to dislike, such as Vitriol d’Oeillet (boring carnation) and Un Bois Sépia (boring 1980s men’s scent), and others that I doubted I’d like and didn’t, such as the Eaux. But I can’t wear them because I no longer have samples of any of them.
I’ll think of something.
We are off to the city this morning with four very annoyed kittens. They are going for their last set of kitten shots so it will be a quick trip with few stops since someone will have to sit in the car with the A/C running.
I’m wearing a hefty dose of Puredistance M today in spite of the heat since I look crummy. I managed to slice my thumb down to the bone instead of my avocado last night so I’m pretty much one handed today and consequently am wearing an oversized men’s tee shirt and leggings I usually reserve for home wear, my hair in the sloppiest sorta bun thing, and unevenly applied mascara over poorly curled lashes. I couldn’t talk anyone into trying the eyelash curler for me this morning so the right eye is fine and the left is super hockey sticks. At least I small good. M is strongish in warm weather so perhaps nobody will get close enough to see my face clearly
That’s a good strategy :). Sorry about your thumb!
Love this story. I never wear make-up to avoid these mishaps! Look after your thumb well.
Ouch, so sorry!!
I shuddered just reading this. Hope your thumb heals quickly, and good luck with your kitties! Are you fostering, or have you really taken on four at once? I work at a large shelter in Chicago, and am thinking of taking on fostering again – did it for years and years previously, but got out of it while I was caring for my ailing mother.
We trapped them in an outbuilding and since we were feeling ready for a kitten anyway, will be keeping two of the females permanently and the third until a cousin can take her this fall. The little male will need a good home once he is neutered and microchipped but we will keep him as long as it takes to find him a perfect place.
jirish, it is really admirable that you foster kittens! I hope that I’ll be ready to do that at some point …
Your poor thumb–I hope it heals fast.
Yikes, hope you heal fast!
So sorry to hear that about your thumb. Please try and take care of yourself. You may not feel your best or look your best, but you do smell divine. Get well soon.
Oof, sorry about the thumb- how could something so tasty as an avocado turn on you like that. Also your outfit sounds in line with my level of effort most days. Elegance is refusal, am I right?
Ouch! I’ve managed to stab myself in the hand and another occasion almost slice off part of my thumb doing the same. Slippery things avocado. Hope you its better soon. Speedy healing!
Oh gosh, sorry about your thumb! Good luck with the kitties!
Sorry about your thumb but, oh, you smell good so no one will notice what you look like. And thanks for the second smile of the day (see my post below for how I woke myself up with the first smile).
I physically shuddered reading about your thumb! Yikes! Hope it heals fast.
Monsillage Eau de Celeri. I decided I need it after all. Crushed vegetation smell with no sweetness whatsoever.
Lol! Exactly the way I feel about Grain des Plasir!
Ciel d’Opale, which is perfectly suited to the rare, beautiful summer day we’re having-70 degrees, low humidity, and not a cloud in the sky. A few more days like this and I might have to stop complaining about summer in DC!
So lucky. It’s so hot, muggy and completely unbearable here.
Ahhh, you smell lovely!
Maitre Parfumer Grain des Plasir. This is not for the non adventurous: It’s pretty much straight celery with a bit of salt.
Quirky for sure. Smells like it could have come from Demeter!
Ooh, sounds interesting!
Michael Kors Bermuda. I wish it was still available. It is lovely!
SOTD is ELDO Putain des Palaces.
Friday- I love that word!
Is it hot where you are? I’ve been wondering how Putain des Palaces does in the summer …
I’m in the 7th circle of Dante’s Inferno. Hotter than bejaysus and as humid as a tropical rain forest- you know the kind? The bugs are bigger than horses and the whole feel is very primeval! T-Rex is taking an afternoon siesta it’s so hot.
Yep, kinda warm. PdP works wonderful down here but I am light on the trigger
Needed to be fired up today, so wearing Terry de Gunzberg Rose Infernale. I like this more and more over time. Not something I would wear every day or everywhere, but when a certain mood strikes, it is very satisfying. The interplay of the rich spicy rose and the smoky incense is interesting and stimulating and soothing all at the same time.
SOTD is Gucci Eau de Parfum. Can’t believe it’s Thursday already.
Happy Friday Eve everyone! My SOTD is No. 42 The Flower Shop by Jo Loves. Such a beautiful floral fragrance. Truly smells like being in a flower shop ( hence the name).
I’m really looking forward to trying that one!
The Flower Shop sounds so pretty!
I’d love to try that one.
I think all of you would like it. If you love the smell of floral fragrances, I can’t imagine why someone wouldn’t enjoy it. Its just absolutely fabulous!
Wearing Strange Invisible Perfumes’ Aquarian Roses. Getting close to done with the sample, maybe I’ll manage to finish all my green roses this summer.
Can’t participate tomorrow, since I’ll be working at the shelter and need to be careful what I wear there. So I’m ‘playing’ today instead, and wearing Corsica Furiosa, which I thought I’d love, and has me puzzled instead. I like it, and might even come to love it, but I was surprised by its name – it feels more like a Corsica Tranquilosa to me. I guess I was expecting something more sharp and bitter, but it wears like a soft green on me. I am using a dab vial though, and wonder if I’m missing out on something because of it.
Oh, wow! My experience with that one is just the opposite. I have a small decant and that initial spritz is such a blast of sharp herbaceous green I feel like the guy in the ad for Memorex, the one where he’s sitting in a chair and the sound blast is whipping back his tie and hair.
I love it and would snap up a 50ml bottle in heartbeat. I hope Marc Antoine is listening…
That’s just the reaction I wanted to get! Do you think my problem is that I’m dabbing?
No, seems I am the minority. Maybe my nose is just hypersensitive?
Same here — just as Deva describes it, and only dabbing from a sample.
I didn’t get any Furiosa either. It was NICE, mind you, but peaceful, like sitting in an herb garden with a gin and tonic.
Ha! Reactions are so funny! I feel like the opening of this is the green equivalent of a dust/sand storm engulfing the city of Phoenix!
Great description! I really liked Corsica Furiosa…
I am still undecided as to the scent, but now I really want to sit in an herb garden with a gin and tonic!
I am wearing Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au The Blanc but in body products not the fume. I used the soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. It is my favorite way to wear this scent–more presence than the perfume and it lasts all day.
Good to know, I like The Blanc and was wondering about the body products.
I’m wearing Bottega Veneta over the last wisps of Boxeuses from last night.
I left the house scentless this morning, so had to use my office supply of Cristalle. Not that this is a bad solution in any way, I never seem to tire of it.
I love your office supply!
Bringing that bottle to the office was one of the best decisions of my life.
How do you keep your Cristalle in your office without everyone trying to use it? I usually keep a stash of samples in my desk in my office. I would be scared that if I brought my bottle to work, it would disappear. I work at a school so I have kids, parents, staff members, and custodians in and out of my office everyday.
Noone has tried to use it so far, although I keep it on my desk for all to see… I wouldn’t mind people using it anyway (stealing is another matter). I’m currently sharing the office with a lovely (male) assistant who is blessedly unsensitive to scent. I sprayed myself quite liberally just before he came in today and while another colleague noticed the scent immediately, he didn’t register it at all. I can be pretty heavy-handed, so this is a plus. I have samples in my desk drawer as well and a bottle of Narciso next to Cristalle, mostly because of the beautiful bottle.
I’m wearing a leathermountain original today. It has a name, but I need to learn about protecting my intellectual property before I broadcast that. Anyone know anything about this process?
In which country?
US, but I also wonder if international protection exists. (This makes it sound like I’ve written the great American novel, not a cheesy two-word phrase!)
My impression from what I’ve read before and quick searches is that the formulas can’t be patented or trademarked, only new molecules, chemical processes, and names. Not that anyone reveals the exact formulae. By Kilian has what they call “the perfumer’s formula” on their website, but it appears to me that the components they list are not specific, single ingredients but rather accords, mostly.
Now you’ve got me intrigued. I’m excited for you, though.
Thank you!
A budding nose! What does it smell like?
Still rose-ing it up over here with a combo of Rose de Mai lotion on my arms, Roses de Chloe, and a tiny smear of Arabian Rose perfume oil. Surprised my craving lasted, since last night I made guava and rose margaritas and am very slightly feeling the effects this morning. They were delicious though!
I would wear that margarita!
Have you been to Salvation Taco on 39th between Madison and 3rd? POW on the margaritas – one sip and you will think you smell like margaritas!
I LOVE the name: Salvation Taco. Wow. Totally stealing that for a story setting.
It is an unusual name. When a colleague mentioned it, my brain refused to acknowledge the combination of the two words and I kept going What? What is it called? Huh?
Wonder if the building used to be a Salvation Army or a church?
No, I think the owner is just wired differently.
Oh man, I will have to go there.
If you are in NYC, we should meet up and we may be able to round up a few more peeps…although for me, said meet up may bave to be in September due to work and vacation and several after work social commitmnts comimg up in the next 30 days.
Everyone found it anyway – that should have been between Lexington and Third!
I haven’t been there. It’ll go on my looooong list of places I want to try. Now that we have an actual kitchen with adult-sized appliances, we’ve been eating in. More money for fumes
Guava and rose margaritas?! I’m swooning …
Me too!
Recipe? Please?
So easy- just add an appropriate amount (or an inappropriate amount) of your tequila of choice, then add guava juice or blended guava, rosewater, lime juice, ice, and a splash of lemon to taste! I also added about two ounces of watermelon juice to sweeten and smooth out the blend because I had gone too heavy on the rosewater and found that I liked it.
Thank you so much! This sounds exactly like my thing, I will try to make some when finally on holiday.
I went to their website – what a splendid place! I really need to eat there at some point. It is a long time since I have been to New York. I feel provincial and out of touch…
Oooh, do please let me know when you’re in town!
oh, you are so sweet! Thank you, and I will, but it is apt to be next summer before my schedule could allow me such an excursion!
I’m wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris today. Always smells so lovely — even in the heat. And, its going to be a hot one today: 94 degrees!!
Twins!!
Hey Twin!! Have a great Thursday!
Thanks! You, too!
I think it’s perfect for the heat – very chill.
I’m wearing my entire sample of Vol De Nuit(current version) and all I could smell was the great green fleeting galbanum opening and now a hint of faintly floral vanilla powder. Disappointing. Anyone try current vs vintage and how do they compare? I imagine there is no comparing.
I had the same sort of reaction to my current-version Vol de Nuit sample; it smelled like… nothing. Five minutes of very soft powdery galbanum up top (I adore galbanum), then some soft powdery vanilla. I was all, WUT IS THIS? GUERLAIN, YOU DISAPPOINT ME.
Here’s what Monsieur Guerlain says about how they compare:
http://www.monsieur-guerlain.com/2008/06/vol-de-nuit.html
According to that they should smell about the same. Maybe a different concentration of the newer version would have more potency.
I don’t have the current, but old Vol de Nuit is wonderful real woods and resins, even in the EdT concentration. I believe some of the synthetic substitutes in reformulations smell very differently (or not at all) to different people.
That might explain why I could barely smell it.
Also, I’m certain my sample was the EdT.
I suppose I’d have to try the vintage to see what’s missing. I think my sample is also the EDT.
I’m wearing one of my new minis, Bvlgari Au The Vert. This was applied about an hour ago and is now gone. Usually I have better luck with colognes, my skin works well with the lighter concentration of scent. I have two scents at the office, Rose Anonyme and a sample of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. I love Rose Anonyme, but I kind of want to try the Dame scent. I would live to find a vanilla I can live with. I have the worst time with vanillas. Between vanilla scents and fig scents, I don’t know which I dislike most. I’ve tried a lot of vanilla scents, and not so many fig scents, and I have yet to find one that I like.
I don’t like vanilla either (at all!), but Merlin at some point recommended Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée. That was a good advice. Have you tried it? I thought it was an interesting fragrance and did not dislike it at all.
I went with a nice dose of Vent Vert today for the hot day we’ll be having before a storm predicted for tonight.
Federic Malle Eau de Magnolia today. O.k. for a migraine day, started promising, but a very musky dry down imo.
Second day in Passage d’Enfer.
Nice!
Profumum Thundra from a sample, and I am impressed with the way the mint is balancing the patch… it’s hard to explain but I feel like the two are opening up a great airy space between them. I hated the first five minutes though. Many people describe it as mushroomy; to me it is disturbing like the blood accord in Secretions Magnifiques.
I’m wearing Crown Bouquet (nod to mals), zingy and springy and perfect for the gorgeous weather here in DC!
OH YAY!! Man, I love that stuff.
I know! I love it, too. A very successful blind buy, thank goodness and thanks to you for turning me on to it.
I think my samples of Shangri La and Moon Bloom will be here soon, and until then I sprayed myself with Pacifica’s jasmine (have forgotten the name along with hundreds of other tidbits).
Today I am sampling one of the set of minis my husband got of the Le Galion reissues. SOTD is 222; an “Oriental Fougere” that smells to me like Byredo Gypsy Water and Vent Vert had a very quiet fougere baby. I am loving this!
My husband wore one that he said smelled like an old man who fancies himself a ladies man. I have to find out which it was…!
I got an early start for tomorrow’s project:
Today, I’m wearing Misia, which I thought I would love but doesn’t work for me at all, unfortunately.
Yesterday, I wore Azemour, which also was a bit of a disapointing surprise… Not because I don’t like it (I do, it’s lovely), but probably because my expectations were unreasonably high. I wish it was more orange fruit and flowers, and a bit less leaf…
I’ll try to find a positive surprise for tomorrow.
Yep, Misia doesn’t work for me at all, either. I was sure I would love it!
I usually don’t wear ‘perfumey’ scents in midsummer but this morning I was in the mood for a chypre, so I’m enjoying (the original) Ivoire de Balmain today, its oakmoss and vetiver smelling great right now.
The NST Influence: Early this a.m. I had a dream. I was with a group of people (don’t remember who nor where), but at the end of the dream we were watching a film (can’t remember which one either). The film ended with red roses floating whimsically in the air, and my last thought (in the dream) was, ‘Oh, I should’ve worn Tocade today!’. Obviously influenced by the Flower Sao Paulo clip yesterday and someone’s mention of waiting for Tocade to arrive, I woke up to my first smile of the day.
Ha! Dreams that have you wake up smiling are magical
Twins! You smell great
SL Cedre today. I think I overdid it a bit (ok, I *know* I overdid it), good thing my morning meetings got cancelled. I smell nice, though. I’m getting more florals from this today than I get in cooler weather.
I approve of overdoing it! And you smell good.
SOTD is Amouage Dia W. Wearing it makes me feel very fancy and ladylike, appropriate for an afternoon of pampering methinks.
Definitely. Any Amouage calls for pampering
I’m wearing my sample of Nea from Mad et Len. Lovely, jammy fruits, golden honey and vanilla.
This sounds interesting
Sampling JM Wood Sage and Sea Salt. I’m a bit surprised I don’t like this one more…I love salty perfumes but somehow this just seems nice enough but a bit sour on me.
Me, too, I love salty/sea fragrances but have not yet tried the Wood Sage and Sea Salt. How does it compare to Eau des Merveilles (my fave) or Sel Marin?
Eau des Merveilles is a top fave for me…and the Wood Sage & Sea Salt really doesn’t compare. It is more similar to Sel Marin but without the citrus that really features there for me. WS&SS is bringing to mind Molecule 01, maybe more than anything else.
Thanks! Doesn’t sound like I’m missing much, despite the raves. I’m not keen on Molecule 01.
Wearing EL Sensuous Nude today. Surprised I like this one as much as I do. It’s nice for the mild weather we’ve had lately.
SN is nice……very soft and natural.
I own it too. I picked up a small bottle at TJ Maxx for next to nothing last winter. It is nice for summer.
Chanel 1932. It’s so blahhhhhh…..
Oh, I like that one. But I am definitely in the minority – a lot of people found it underwhelming.
I enjoy wearing 1932 also. I love the way it unfolds.
If either of you (or anybody els reading this thread) are itching for a sample of it, you are welcome to it! Emayl me at kgoodw2 at hotmayl dot com so I can get send it to somebody who will give it love. I have an unloved sample of Chanel Sycomore that I can toss in as well. It’s really nice, but just runs a bit too masculine for my tastes.
SOTD = Chanel 28 La Pausa
I was going to wear Carnal Flower but realized in time that I have an 8AM meeting. 7 sprtizes will last me all day. I remarked to someone earlier today that “something” smells good and after I said that I realized that it was me!
Hah! That’s hilarious
Too funny!
:-).
You are something!
I saw what you did
I hope you let them know you found the source!
They were not the right audience for perfume talk
Wearing Bendelirious this morning and hoping it sticks around a while…
Profumi del Forte Roma Imperiale.
Applied at 7:30am, wishing I could have another spritz right about now, but it’s still present.
I’m wearing the original Ivoire de Balmain and a long dress. Feeling pretty darn old school classy!
No wonder! This sounds wonderful.
I’m finally testing a sample of Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack, which I am enjoying very much. I think it will join Vol de Nuit as a favorite fall scent. I looked up reviews of his fragrances and ordered the sample pack from his website since the others, especially Au Delà, sound interesting. He has an interesting blog, too, BTW. Busy morning, LOL.
A perfumista’s work is never done
Ooh, that sample pack has been on my wishlist for quite a while! I’m really interested in him and his work. I’m glad you’re enjoying Lampblack.
I had never heard of this brand, but looked it up and it’s very exciting! I feel a sampling phase coming on…
nozknoz,
would also like to know what you think of Au Delà (as I am also considering the samples).
Onda Voile d’Extrait for me today. Day off equals ability to wear big scents. Tonight I’ll go see King Lear, this year’s Shakespeare on the Common production
Have fun! I bave the distinct impression that The Commons (the park near or facing the Boston Public Library) seems small but when I mentally compare it to Bryant Park, they look to be equivalent in size AND plenty big to be a play venue.
Facing the library is Copley Sq. The Boston Common is much bigger and includes the Frog Pond, playground, ball fields, bandstand and lots of grassy areas and is about a mile east
The Boston Common is beautiful!
Globe Rochas, which manages leather and fruit without sweetness and still seemingly refreshing?
I went with Si Lolita today, continuing my week of revisiting things I haven’t worn in a long time. This one is more fleeting than most on me, and I tend to get good longevity out of a lot of things. I remember now why I usually layer with the lotion, which I forgot to do this morning. Even having sprayed on my shirt, I’ve still mostly lost it except for the back of my right wrist.
I always liked the bottle(don’t remember how it smells though).
Hello, NST. It’s my Friday and I was all set to be surprised by AG Myrrhe Ardente, but I feel really unwell, so rather than set up an association between the perfume and a general feeling of ick-ness, I’m wearing nothing. You all smell delish, though. I’m going to grit my teeth and get through today somehow and hope to come out and play surprises tomorrow. Bestest to all.
Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, waterdragon. Take care, sending hugs and hopes you recover quickly!
You’re so kind. I’ll be fine soon-ish. Nothing lasts for ever.
Oh, so sorry to hear
Hope something will surprise you pleasantly tomorrow.
You’re lovely. Thank you.
Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Friday for me too, I was planning my Friday contribution for when it’s Friday for the majority, but realised i was surprised by how much I liked today’s choice too. Wearing Angélique from Papillon, and hadn’t expected to like it the best from the three.
SOTD for me is Nuxe Prodigieux le parfum.
I’m late in the game today but put on Bronze Goddess early in the morning and surprisingly I can still smell it. I can’t believe it’s the first time I’ve worn it this summer.
Isn’t it fabulous? You smell terrific!
Late in the day, but my hubby just got home from England and he brought me home Miller Harris L’Air de Rien! And it’s gorgeous!!!
Score! Good job, hubby!
I love when my husband goes out of his way to get me samples when out shopping. It’s so sweet..
He brought me a sample of Ostara, as well, and it’s gorgeous, too.
I’m wearing an entire sample vial of Oolang Infini. The last time I tried this it lasted about 10 minutes and I thought I might have underapplied, so I distributed the whole thing about my person. I can still smell it, and it’s been about 30 minutes, but I’m not wowed.
I know that this probably won’t be seen tonight due to the timeliness of my post. I wore FM Lipstick Rose today. I spent an entire day in the ER with my mother. She was finally diagnosed with Babesiosis, a tick borne illness with malaria-like symptoms. She may possibly may have contracted others as well, but we won’t know until her test results come back. After several hours, they finally admitted her to the hospital. I came home late tonight, showered and put on some YR Monoi oil. It’s really pretty but I am very tired yet too wound up to rest. I love reading these posts. They are like a soothing balm after a long, hard day.
Wow. That’s a bad one. Hope she recovers quickly now that they know what she has.
Thanks Sapphire, I really appreciate you support. She pretty tough for a 75 year old so I’m hoping that she shows improvement tomorrow.
So sorry to hear about your mom. Sending well wishes your way in hopes of a speedy recovery.
Thank you Scentfromabove!
I also spent today at er, for myself…my injuries have caused unbearable pain had to get more imaging….so sorry about your mom, also sending well wishes
Thank you Omega. I am glad you responded. I was thinking about you last night as I was writing my post and hoping that you had some improvement. I sincerely hope that you get some relief from the pain!
Wishing your mom a speedy recovery and a better day for you today. I agree with you, I find reading these posts after a long hard day very comforting.
Thank you lillyjo. Another day in the trenches. I hope you have a good day!
That sounds awful but glad they figured out what it is. I have to look that one up-22 years as an RN and I’ve never heard of that illness. Wishing her a full recovery and some rest for you.
Thanks so much Elisa. I am heading back to the hospital. Have a good day!
BTW, nurses really are angels. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the work you do!
I’m sorry to hear about your mom, Petunia. It’s good news that they seem to have a diagnosis and they’ve admitted her for a full work-up and treatment. I wish her a full recovery. I hope you will take care of yourself as well. Please keep us updated. Sending hugs and well wishes…
Thanks Holly. I appreciate your well wishes!
So sorry! I had not even heard of that, and glad they were able to diagnose it correctly.
Thank you Robin. I am very grateful for the excellent care she is receiving.
How awful! Wishing your mom a speedy and full recovery and a better day ahead for you, too. Sending positive vibes your way!
Thanks Laila! I’ll take all the positive vibes that come my way!
