Thursday scent of the day 7/23

Posted by Robin on 23 July 2015 194 Comments

The New Book of Flowers, illustration

It's almost Friday! If you have a minute, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's l’Opera des Rouges et des Roses.

Reminder: this Friday, 7/24, will be Perfume Surprise Friday...wear a fragrance you expected to hate but loved, or, give another chance to a perfume you expected to love but hated, or surprise us with another interpretation of "perfume surprise".

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Annick Goutal’s Le Chevrefeuille. My first niche purchase, and first blind buy, inspired by your review. Luckily I loved it on first sniff and still do to this day.

In the mood for Serge Lutens all week: Santal Blanc on Monday, Feminité du Bois on Tuesday, Douce Amère yesterday, Chergui today. Every one of them recognizably a Lutens, I think. Don’t know what I’ll wear tomorrow: I guess I’ll have to break the streak.

There is one Lutens that surprised you, surely?? Even if only by being not so lovely as SB, FdB, DA & Chergui?

Ever since I started really wearing Lutens I was never surprised to like something, because I always expected to: his tastes are mostly very much in line with my own, at least for the first fifteen years of his career.

There are some Lutenses that I was surprised to dislike, such as Vitriol d’Oeillet (boring carnation) and Un Bois Sépia (boring 1980s men’s scent), and others that I doubted I’d like and didn’t, such as the Eaux. But I can’t wear them because I no longer have samples of any of them.

        I’ll think of something.

We are off to the city this morning with four very annoyed kittens. They are going for their last set of kitten shots so it will be a quick trip with few stops since someone will have to sit in the car with the A/C running.
I’m wearing a hefty dose of Puredistance M today in spite of the heat since I look crummy. I managed to slice my thumb down to the bone instead of my avocado last night so I’m pretty much one handed today and consequently am wearing an oversized men’s tee shirt and leggings I usually reserve for home wear, my hair in the sloppiest sorta bun thing, and unevenly applied mascara over poorly curled lashes. I couldn’t talk anyone into trying the eyelash curler for me this morning so the right eye is fine and the left is super hockey sticks. At least I small good. M is strongish in warm weather so perhaps nobody will get close enough to see my face clearly ;)

I shuddered just reading this. Hope your thumb heals quickly, and good luck with your kitties! Are you fostering, or have you really taken on four at once? I work at a large shelter in Chicago, and am thinking of taking on fostering again – did it for years and years previously, but got out of it while I was caring for my ailing mother.

We trapped them in an outbuilding and since we were feeling ready for a kitten anyway, will be keeping two of the females permanently and the third until a cousin can take her this fall. The little male will need a good home once he is neutered and microchipped but we will keep him as long as it takes to find him a perfect place.

Needed to be fired up today, so wearing Terry de Gunzberg Rose Infernale. I like this more and more over time. Not something I would wear every day or everywhere, but when a certain mood strikes, it is very satisfying. The interplay of the rich spicy rose and the smoky incense is interesting and stimulating and soothing all at the same time.

Can’t participate tomorrow, since I’ll be working at the shelter and need to be careful what I wear there. So I’m ‘playing’ today instead, and wearing Corsica Furiosa, which I thought I’d love, and has me puzzled instead. I like it, and might even come to love it, but I was surprised by its name – it feels more like a Corsica Tranquilosa to me. I guess I was expecting something more sharp and bitter, but it wears like a soft green on me. I am using a dab vial though, and wonder if I’m missing out on something because of it.

Oh, wow! My experience with that one is just the opposite. I have a small decant and that initial spritz is such a blast of sharp herbaceous green I feel like the guy in the ad for Memorex, the one where he’s sitting in a chair and the sound blast is whipping back his tie and hair.

I love it and would snap up a 50ml bottle in heartbeat. I hope Marc Antoine is listening…

How do you keep your Cristalle in your office without everyone trying to use it? I usually keep a stash of samples in my desk in my office. I would be scared that if I brought my bottle to work, it would disappear. I work at a school so I have kids, parents, staff members, and custodians in and out of my office everyday.

Noone has tried to use it so far, although I keep it on my desk for all to see… I wouldn’t mind people using it anyway (stealing is another matter). I’m currently sharing the office with a lovely (male) assistant who is blessedly unsensitive to scent. I sprayed myself quite liberally just before he came in today and while another colleague noticed the scent immediately, he didn’t register it at all. I can be pretty heavy-handed, so this is a plus. I have samples in my desk drawer as well and a bottle of Narciso next to Cristalle, mostly because of the beautiful bottle.

My impression from what I’ve read before and quick searches is that the formulas can’t be patented or trademarked, only new molecules, chemical processes, and names. Not that anyone reveals the exact formulae. By Kilian has what they call “the perfumer’s formula” on their website, but it appears to me that the components they list are not specific, single ingredients but rather accords, mostly.

So easy- just add an appropriate amount (or an inappropriate amount) of your tequila of choice, then add guava juice or blended guava, rosewater, lime juice, ice, and a splash of lemon to taste! I also added about two ounces of watermelon juice to sweeten and smooth out the blend because I had gone too heavy on the rosewater and found that I liked it.

I’m wearing my entire sample of Vol De Nuit(current version) and all I could smell was the great green fleeting galbanum opening and now a hint of faintly floral vanilla powder. Disappointing. Anyone try current vs vintage and how do they compare? I imagine there is no comparing.

I had the same sort of reaction to my current-version Vol de Nuit sample; it smelled like… nothing. Five minutes of very soft powdery galbanum up top (I adore galbanum), then some soft powdery vanilla. I was all, WUT IS THIS? GUERLAIN, YOU DISAPPOINT ME.

Here’s what Monsieur Guerlain says about how they compare:

According to that they should smell about the same. Maybe a different concentration of the newer version would have more potency.

I don’t have the current, but old Vol de Nuit is wonderful real woods and resins, even in the EdT concentration. I believe some of the synthetic substitutes in reformulations smell very differently (or not at all) to different people.

I’m wearing one of my new minis, Bvlgari Au The Vert. This was applied about an hour ago and is now gone. Usually I have better luck with colognes, my skin works well with the lighter concentration of scent. I have two scents at the office, Rose Anonyme and a sample of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. I love Rose Anonyme, but I kind of want to try the Dame scent. I would live to find a vanilla I can live with. I have the worst time with vanillas. Between vanilla scents and fig scents, I don’t know which I dislike most. I’ve tried a lot of vanilla scents, and not so many fig scents, and I have yet to find one that I like.

I don’t like vanilla either (at all!), but Merlin at some point recommended Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée. That was a good advice. Have you tried it? I thought it was an interesting fragrance and did not dislike it at all.

Profumum Thundra from a sample, and I am impressed with the way the mint is balancing the patch… it’s hard to explain but I feel like the two are opening up a great airy space between them. I hated the first five minutes though. Many people describe it as mushroomy; to me it is disturbing like the blood accord in Secretions Magnifiques.

I got an early start for tomorrow’s project:
Today, I’m wearing Misia, which I thought I would love but doesn’t work for me at all, unfortunately.
Yesterday, I wore Azemour, which also was a bit of a disapointing surprise… Not because I don’t like it (I do, it’s lovely), but probably because my expectations were unreasonably high. I wish it was more orange fruit and flowers, and a bit less leaf…
I’ll try to find a positive surprise for tomorrow.

I usually don’t wear ‘perfumey’ scents in midsummer but this morning I was in the mood for a chypre, so I’m enjoying (the original) Ivoire de Balmain today, its oakmoss and vetiver smelling great right now.

The NST Influence: Early this a.m. I had a dream. I was with a group of people (don’t remember who nor where), but at the end of the dream we were watching a film (can’t remember which one either). The film ended with red roses floating whimsically in the air, and my last thought (in the dream) was, ‘Oh, I should’ve worn Tocade today!’. Obviously influenced by the Flower Sao Paulo clip yesterday and someone’s mention of waiting for Tocade to arrive, I woke up to my first smile of the day. :-)

Eau des Merveilles is a top fave for me…and the Wood Sage & Sea Salt really doesn’t compare. It is more similar to Sel Marin but without the citrus that really features there for me. WS&SS is bringing to mind Molecule 01, maybe more than anything else.

I went with Si Lolita today, continuing my week of revisiting things I haven’t worn in a long time. This one is more fleeting than most on me, and I tend to get good longevity out of a lot of things. I remember now why I usually layer with the lotion, which I forgot to do this morning. Even having sprayed on my shirt, I’ve still mostly lost it except for the back of my right wrist.

I know that this probably won’t be seen tonight due to the timeliness of my post. I wore FM Lipstick Rose today. I spent an entire day in the ER with my mother. She was finally diagnosed with Babesiosis, a tick borne illness with malaria-like symptoms. She may possibly may have contracted others as well, but we won’t know until her test results come back. After several hours, they finally admitted her to the hospital. I came home late tonight, showered and put on some YR Monoi oil. It’s really pretty but I am very tired yet too wound up to rest. I love reading these posts. They are like a soothing balm after a long, hard day.

That sounds awful but glad they figured out what it is. I have to look that one up-22 years as an RN and I’ve never heard of that illness. Wishing her a full recovery and some rest for you.

I’m sorry to hear about your mom, Petunia. It’s good news that they seem to have a diagnosis and they’ve admitted her for a full work-up and treatment. I wish her a full recovery. I hope you will take care of yourself as well. Please keep us updated. Sending hugs and well wishes…
