Thursday scent of the day 6/25

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2015 228 Comments

Men in an Outrigger Canoe

It's Global Beatles Day, and Antoni Gaudí's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am in L’Artisan Parfumeur Bois Farine, from Kevin's Top 10 of Summer 2011.

Reminder: tomorrow is Top 10 of Summer. Wear one of your own "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

For Global Beatles Day I’m wearing something from England, Penhaligon’s Ostara. Too bad I don’t have anything vintage from Yardley!

Ostara is a disappointment. I want the narcissus note to be more prominent. It gets drowned out by the orange blossom. However, I find it much easier to wear than the other Bertrand Duchaufour orange blossom, Seville a l’Aube. And that means I’ve been wearing Ostara more often than Seville….

But why wear either if you don’t love them?

In vintage-ish Diorissimo today, since it’s only in the 80’s here, not so hot. Mmmmm, LOTV.

Oh, I love Diorissimo. You must smell wonderful. I have current EDP, and it’s more linear than what I wore in the ’80s. But, I like the drydown. Isn’t it a gorgeous day!

In a needy pique, I drained my small bottle of vintage Diorissimo parfum about a week ago. Sniff! (But it did make me feel better…)

      Enjoy!!

I’d never even HEARD of the line, but they still have a web presence with an online store, and Luckyscent has their namesake scent which sounds extremely yowza — commenters compare it to vintage Opium, Coco, and Shalimar. For $85, they’re practically giving it away, and the Aqaba website offers flat-rate shipping anywhere in the world, so I guess I’m ordering some samples.

The original Aqaba used to be a sort of cult favorite on MakeupAlley. I never liked any of the followups, but they were doing lots of them for awhile, and then they just seemed to disappear.

They appear to have only 10 scents in their line, so I admire their restraint (Fueguia 1833 has cranked out an incomprehensible 59 scents in 5 years).

The thing is I was very fortunate to visit Oman earlier this year, and we visited the Amouage factory (no discounts but a nice outing). In the dry desert climate the Amouages of the sample set I bought wore so easily! No bravery required, Fate Woman for breakfast, as if it were Cristalle. So I hope it works similarly here….

Jennifer Aniston is my SOTD. My allergies/sinuses have been acting up big time, causing dizziness and nausea. I have a few scents that I can wear on a day like today, and this is one of them.

I was going to wear Guerlain Terracotta again today (took a while, but I’ve decided I love it), but… I decided that Chanel Misia went better with my attire. I’m in a ladylike grey sheath with kitten heels. Felt like I must have a ladylike scent to go with it… As I was digging around, I found my decant and thought…that’s the one!

Need to think about tomorrow’s summer scent. Could it be Terracotta again? Maybe EL BG, EL Aliage, OJ Frangipani? Or steal my husband’s 1966 At the Beach…. Will probably depend on how steamy it feels….

Global Beatles Day?! Too bad I didn’t see this sooner, or I could have come up with some sort of scented tie-in.

Testing out Sud Magnolia for the first time today. I’m not familiar with the scent of magnolia (except from perfume), so it’s a hard note for me to evaluate and contextualize. On the whole, very refreshing… though I’m not sure how supportive I am of Sephora’s description of it being “reminiscent of antebellum elegance.”

Deviating from the recent norm of Amour de Cacao today.

Instead, I opted for the lovely Bvlgari Omnia le Originale! This is a wonderful summer fragrance- it’s very present, interesting, and unique, but not overbearing.

I have been walking on my treadmill at work and tracking my steps (we have a company wide walk challenge currently) and just got notification via FitBit that I have walked 250 mile since 6/3/15!!

I keep hearing the refrain from the Proclaimers song in my head.

Almost Friday! How I look forward to Fridays! :D

My Fitbit runs my life and I love it. We were in Edinburgh a few months ago and if you know how hilly and stair-y that city is, you won’t be surprised that I hit 81 floors in one day, and then I thought, well, this is as close as I’ll ever get to 100 floors (which is the Skyscraper badge) and I hate to waste it, so I actually spent fifteen minutes walking up and down all the stairs in the hotel until I hit my goal.

Good on you for hitting your goal!

I had no idea how LITTLE I walked until I got this contraption. It was a real eye opener and keeps me on track.

I just have the FitBit Zip, so it doesn’t track elevation change but am thinking of upgrading as I am going on a back packing trip in the Grand Canyon at the end of Sept. And will have a LOT of elevation changes when descending/ascending the rim.

Is charging yours a pain? That’s the main reason I opted for the zip- no charging and cheap. Have you ever lost data because you forgot to charge?

Walk on my friend! Your heart and body thank you :)

I can’t wear anything on my wrist (I’m constantly conscious of watches and the like, and it drives me mad) so I have a Fitbit One. I clip it to my shorts when I’m at the gym, and I just take it out of its silicone sleeve and drop it into my trousers pocket the rest of the time. I charge it maybe once a week, and I’ve never lost data. The battery lasts about ten days between charges, so even if you’re somewhere you can’t bring the charger (and it’s tiny), you have about a week and a half.

I’ve had a Fitbit for a year and I’m spotty in using it except when we have a company challenge going on. I wanted to throw mine out because of the hokey phrases I got whenever I picked it up (Hug Me, etc.) but I eventually figured out how to silence it. I’ e bad no problems charging it. The only drawback is it’s impossible to read the numbers when you’re out and about especially when you’re in a little bit of sunlight.

Deva – enjoy the Grand Canyon! Would love to do that. I rafted it years and years ago – the side hikes were amazing and filled with hidden rewards (pools for swimming, grottos). Envious….

LizzieB, see my response to MR below about the FitBit. As far as the GC is concerned, I am scared because apparently I have chosen one of he most difficult tricky trails, having to navigate my own bulk plus a 40 pound pack. I am hoping the beauty and solitude make up for the physical agony I will experience. It’s been on my bucket list since I popped out of the womb and I’m not getting younger, so I need to get a move on it :)

250 miles- well done! That’s halfway to Santiago on the Camino de Santiago… My friend and I were recently discussing the idea of going to walk it.. but gee.. 500miles IS an awfully long way to have the Proclaimers song stuck in your head isnt it? :-/

SO interested in this discussion of the FitBit! I have been tempted to buy one, as I am a data-nerd AND have been working very hard on my health and fitness over the past half-decade or so. My worry is that I would get unhealthfully obsessy about it, though. I can give myself anxiety counting calories or grams of protein or servings of fruits and veggies or. . . You get the idea!

If you like to count things (as I do) then it will make you TOTALLY obsessy. I check mine about fifty times a day to make sure I’m on target for all the targets (steps, stairs, miles), and I log all the fluids I drink (haven’t gotten to the point where I log my food, although I really should). I have daily goals, weekly goals, badge goals, lifetime goals….

There is someone in one of my online community groups who logs ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND steps a day. I cannot even imagine. I think she has it attached to the pendulum of a grandfather clock.

I swear it. If you ran eight hours a day and that clocked in at 200 steps per minute, that’s (8x60x200) = 96,000 steps. She has got to be some kind of insane ultra marathon runner. Nothing else makes sense.

MR, start off with the cheap one- that way if it becomes “problematic” you haven’t wasted a ton of money. If you are really digging it, you can always upgrade. I like the Zip because I can wear it on my shoe, bra, waistband, and it is inconspicuous. The readout is the size of a watch face and even my sketchy 50 year old eyes can see the data. The smartphone OS is easy and quick and you can get very detailed with data, as Pyramus noted- you can input food and drink data, etc. good luck with whatever you choose :)

I’ve had pedometers in the past and didn’t find them all that motivating–most of my non-work exercise is lifting weights. Do you find that it logs that sort of effort in a meaningful way? (FWIW, when I’m working, I’ve been known to walk 10-15 miles a day in my classroom and around the school making copies or whatever.)

Well, honestly, I’m not sure how it would track weight lifting activities. It senses body movements via an accelerometer and seems pretty sensitive. If you are standing/sitting in place and doing an upper body work-out, I don’t think it would record. I wear it to spin class as well and found that I got more accurate results when I moved it from my waist to my spin shoe. You might do better with a wrist type monitor. Hope that helps…

            25 June 2015 at 3:41 pm

That’s an awesome amount of walking for work! I usually log my own weight-lifting exercises separately. The fitbit does pick up on some activity other than walking, but it’s best as a general pedometer.

Thank you, both, for your replies!
I think what I really wish I had was a way to figure out my general calorie expenditure each day. I have such a hard time comparing myself with the usual definitions of activity.

Jenkr, I *am* on my feet all day, but it hardly feels like exercise. Plenty of us teachers are plump despite an “active” job. My goal is to reduce my % body fat, rather than to lose weight (I want to continue to increase muscle), and I’m having a heck of a time developing a reasonable plan. And I guess I have too much of an independence streak to find a trainer. :-/

I’m a fitbit-ter as well. I only have the Flex and recently it broke. It took a tumble in the laundromat washer/dryer several months ago and held on for a bit, but then went wonky at the beginning of the month. However, I just got an email yesterday that my new one shipped and I should have it on Saturday. Their customer service is ridiculously amazing. I’ve had mine for a year and a half and they are replacing it for free. I like using it for tracking calories and steps in general. When I do more serious workouts (long runs) I use my Nike+ app on my ipod but also have my fitbit for steps.

I’m also on the hunt for a better looking wristband. I love the Tory Burch ones, but they are really expensive. A coworker showed me another site with really nice wristbands that I may consider so that I’ll actually wear it on my wrist like I’m supposed to. I usually just put the tracker in my pocket.

It’s so nice to see others into the Fitbit here as well!

My husband lost his in Berlin after having it for only three months, and after a few not especially helpful e-mails (“Have you tried going back to where you might have lost it?”), they did FedEx him another one: he didn’t have the receipt but he sent them a scan of the unique bar code on the package when we got back, and they can tell from their end that the device isn’t being used, so it’s not as if we’re trying to scam them. So it took a bit of prodding but they did provide good customer service.

If anybody, like me, regrets missing those when they were originally around, the owner told me that they will be reissuing the first two series soon.

Oh yes, it has definitely been re-formulated (probably seven times over!). The original Prescriptives Calyx that I wore religiously in the summer in the late 1980s(for three years I went through many bottles) was incredibly “mouthwateringly” tart….the last Calyx I had a full bottle of was purchased two years ago…it was muted and more delicately floral…not sure if it was taken over by Clinique at that point but I am sure the current rendition is probably similar to the most current bottle I owned and emptied.

Hi, Perthgirl. Congrats on a great new look! I chopped my hair off about five years ago and stopped colouring it too. I’ve never understood why it happened on that day, in that way, but I walked into the hairdresser’s place with perfectly ordinary intentions and sort of medium middle-aged hair, just slightly rooty, and walked out with a number 3, completely gun-metal grey except where it was actually really silver. Hadn’t seen my own unadulterated colour for years, so I felt mild surprise every time I looked in a mirror! And as MarjorieRose says, the hair thing marked the beginning of quite big changes in my life. Exciting! Hope good changes and chances come your way.

I wear Sensuous from time to time, and it is not the most “natural” smelling thing, for sure. Nude is a bit more muted but has a similar feel, to my nose. There are some musks in there that I mostly don’t mind but sometimes have an irritating quality to them.

I got that too. I wore it the other day and noticed it. It’s more of a general synthetic smell to me. I seriously doubt they are using quality ingredients for a perfume like that. That being said, it is kinda nice when you get past the plastic smell. It eventually faded on me, but it may last on others.

I retried this today, too, in Ulta. Same reaction. I’m very sensitive not only to synthetics, but I’m beginning to suspect different versions of alcohol in perfume bases. I try not to mention it much (it’s my problem, after all), almost feel like a rabblerouser, but surely our olfactory systems are warning us of *something*.

My SOTD is in my personal Top 5 of Summer, Tauer’s Zeta. SO, so beautiful. I’m very sad that it has been discontinued. I have nearly drained my first FB, and thankfully, I have a back-up bottle. Might have to discipline myself down to only three (gasp!) sprays instead of my customary 7-9.

I love that one too but only had a sample from the discovery set I ordered after the discontinuation. Not sure why he would offer the option of discontinued fragrances in his sample sets. What happens if you fall in love? Life isn’t fair. I considered asking if I could buy the rest of whatever bottle he’s using for samples.

Wearing Miller et Bertaux Green, Green, and Green. Great for a toasty day… verbena, vetiver, a wee bit of jasmine. I liked it in the winter, but for summer, it’s even better.

Scent of the day is my Urban Outfitters rose oil – nice and refreshing.

The nasty guy at work got ugly with me again this morning. Gearing myself up to tell him that I won’t accept this treatment anymore.

I’d love to be the type of woman who faces these things and instantaneously responds with confidence…I’m not there yet.

I can understand your not being able to respond immediately with confidence. I hope you’re giving yourself a break, and perhaps you may come to realize that you are simply a genuinely kind person who is not in the habit of behaving in a confrontational way. It doesn’t come naturally to you as you don’t do it yourself, and you lack experience. I hope you can focus on all of your good qualities, and not let this situation erode your sense of self.

Holly, thank you so much – and so sweet of you to remember my having mentioned it before. I am much better at giving myself a break on this kind of stuff than I was in the past, so I’m not beating myself up – thank you for worrying about that. I am just slowly working towards someone who defends themselves as enthusiastically as they defend others. A common problem for women, I think.

Again, thanks for your kind words.

Hello, Ihadanidea. For what my opinion is worth, I’m sure that waiting and thinking about your response will allow you to find the best way to deal with this unpleasant fellow, so don’t feel bad that you didn’t whip around and confront him on the spot. When you do come up with your considered statement, you’ll be so prepared and confident that he’ll probably be speechless. And a good thing, too. A bit of flabbergasting is good for some people! Good luck and good words to you.

I used to work for boss whose moods were totally unpredictable. When he was angry (and mean) I was usually too taken aback to say anything. But once at the end of the day he attacked, and I fought back. I was reasonable but very strong and let my anger show. It felt wonderful, and he left without a word. You’ll know when it’s the right time.

As a manager who sees the other end of these types of situations, I really suggest that when you are ready to confront this person, you bring either your manager/supervisor with you or some other neutral witness. You don’t want this to descend into a he said/she said when you basically have an HR problem on your hands that should be dealt with correctly. Also, make sure you have documentation of the times and dates, etc, of each occurrence, what was said, etc. If necessary, you need to give your HR person/manager/supervisor something to work with. And then if nothing comes of this to bring it to an effective stop, you have documentation in case of a grievance to go up the chain. Workplace harassment – even non-sexual harassment – is really a legal HR matter and needs to be addressed in a methodological way. Don’t get upset. Just the facts, right! If you write everything out in a very basic way before you confront, then even if you do get upset, you have this document to help you get through a very difficult communication. You should also consider speaking to an HR person before you confront as well. I don’t know the details, but they may already have info of similar occurrences on this person with other workers.

Sweet Ann, thank you so much for your wonderful advice.

The problem here is – we have no real HR to speak of – one person on another campus in a different state, and he does nothing to support us. I brought this issue up with my direct supervisor and she ultimately did nothing with it because she is nice, but not assertive – even though she’s his boss too. No one here will do anything for me, as has been proved multiple times before. But on the plus side, no one will do anything for him either if he has an actual problem with me (which everyone here agrees he does not).

He only does it with me, and he only does it in ways that he can get away with. Ultimately, he has no power, but he behaves (I think without realizing it) like a bully with me because thus far, I’ve let him get away with it. Not anymore – not for the duration of my time here.

I wish I’d documented each time he misbehaved, but unfortunately I did not. Still, I feel confident about the way I will be speaking to him today.

I think you’re right about this being a common problem for women. Although I overheard a woman today setting firm limits with someone on the phone in a calm, yet forceful way. I clapped when she was done! I’m not good in the moment either. Good luck if you choose to confront tomorrow. Maybe wear Chanel No 19. From other comments I’ve read, it seems to be the confidence fragrance!

I always tell my students / clients that when you need to get your point across to someone without any interruptions, try this:
-tell this man that you would like to sit down and talk with him
-before you meet with him, make sure you have EVERYTHING that you want to discuss written down ( this way, if there are any distractions or interruptions you can get back on track with your list)
      – try not to make this man a target to where he becomes defensive
(ex. instead of saying “I hate it when you….” try saying “It makes me extremely uncomfortable when comments are made about….)
I hope things work out for you. Good Luck!

Gidday, all. I’ve been wondering whether it’s too greedy to do the community project twice, once on my Friday and again when it rolls around in the other hemisphere where most of NST is. My SOTD, from my top ten winter picks, is DK Black Cashmere. A-NZ is currently freezing (literally so, down south) and even here in the more temperate north, it’s miserably cold, so the warm woods and gentle spices of BC are hitting every mark. I love BC for itself, but also because the last time I wore it, I was in the lift going up to my office when a couple of students got in. One sniffed and said, “Something smells nice!” and his friend agreed. I didn’t claim to be the source in case they said they were actually talking about their lunchtime fish’n’chips or something– that would have been totally demoralising– but I pranced out on my floor feeling pleased with myself and pleased with them. BC forever– I smell of it and I’m wrapped up in layers of it.

Started today in Eau de Givenchy. This decant is quickly becoming a new summer favorite. I doubt I have ten great summer scents in total, so this must also be community project compliant. :) Today I noticed a beautiful bitter herbal drydown like Eau de Campagne, after the delightfully skanky narcissus/citrus top and narcissus/honeysuckle heart. A wholly satisfying olfactory arc.

Eau de Givenchy sounds amazing! Narcissus? Honeysuckle? I whizzed over to Fragrantica, and cringed when I saw tuberose listed as one of the notes. Tuberose is my nemesis – isn’t that a shame? I’ll put it on my sample list anyway. I keep swearing I’ll never, ever go there again but apparently I’ve lied repeatedly. ;)

Eau du Sud is so lovely in the warm weather. Sometimes I crave that lime/herbal goodness. Something AG does very well. I also have and love Nuits d’Hadrian and it is similar, but a little more spicy. Both of those scents are quite masculine, but sometimes that is exactly what suits the mood.

Atelier Cologne Oolong Infini is wonderful on this warm afternoon. At first sniff I thought, meh, smells like aftershave. But I keep sniffing and sniffing, and it remains interesting.

It blows my mind because I don’t smell tea or flowers or leather or any specific notes save for a bit of neroli that floats up at times, instead it’s a melding of parts into a greater whole. Groovy.

Later I’ll spritz on some JM Red Roses so I can spend the evening imagining I’m sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun, although I as neither the eggman nor the walrus.
