Tuesday scent of the day 6/23

Posted by Robin on 23 June 2015 198 Comments

garden angel

Happy Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolaï Eau d'Été, from Erin's Top 10 of Summer 2013.

Reminder: this Friday, 6/26, is Top 10 of Summer. Wear one of your own "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Busy packaging for vacation-commando as of now but thinking Eau de Cologne for later ..or Cristalle eau Vert. Can’t decide. Someone can choose for me. May bring one along for my trip.

Atelier Cologne Rendez-Vous. Perfect ripe peach; I am forever grateful to the Unseen Censer for generously sharing her 30 ml mini with me.

After a good eighteen hours of hiding under the bed while we moved into our new apartment, Zelda has emerged to rub her face on every door, chair, and surface she can find. “Your name may be on the lease, human, but we both know who really owns this place.”

Wearing Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea this morning for what promises to be a really hot Manhattan day. This one’s a bit of a throwback – I discovered a bottle of Green Tea Intense in a TJMaxx circa 2006, long before my perfume habit, and decided I loved it. I wore it a lot, then tired of it, and passed it on to someone else.

Partially due to a summer desire for tea scents and a love of green tea everything, I bought a cheap bottle of the original and am wearing it today for the first time. Nice and refreshing, though perhaps not as sophisticated as the Bvlgari Green Tea, which I also have (sitting in the refrigerator).

Keep checking! Just last week I saw GT Honeysuckle, Camellia, Cherry Blossom and Lavender in my Marshalls for $8-$10 each. I should have picked up a few, but didn’t want to buy unsniffed!

I’m just now debating between Courtesan or maybe En Passant. I’m just hating the thunderstorms that are passing through, bringing the humidity and mosquitos. After suffering through 10 minutes of being outside with my dogs so they can go to the bathroom, I wake up to 11 mosquito bites on my chest and arms and landed on my face. I am so annoyed that my dogs have to wander at night making standing on the deck a must.

I was one of those mentioners but I spilled my sample yesterday :-( I surprisingly liked it. The notes look like a hot sticky mess but after the fruit salad dies down, it’s a soft, makeup-y, musky, slightly salty skin scent.

The aquatic vibe in En Passant seems perfect for a thunderstorm. The mosquitoes really are going hard this year- I find three new bites every time I leave the house!

There is nothing like vintage O. It was my summer staple for many years (as well as O Intense).I think I emptied approximately 7 or so bottles. I cannot wear the current rendition for my nose remembers the original.

My advice always is that if you like the current formulation stick with it and don’t seek out the vintage, as you may very well fall in love with the vintage which ruins your relationship with the current rendition!!!

I truly enjoy finding the most obscure brands (selfish of me as I don’t always want others wearing my scent!). But actually, Veritas Inlustrat Perfumes are locally made and I have only found them at three different stores (one of which has gone out of business). There is no online store for this brand and when I googled all I could find was a facebook link to Crossroads Gift Shop (one of the places I frequent). I love that they are 100 percent natural made with only essential oils and so ridiculously affordable in comparison to Afteliers, Ayala Moriel, Strange Invisible Perfumes and other companies who make only naturals.
As far as the Fiele Fragrances go (which I spent about two weeks ranting and raving about) I found them thanks to Now Smell This (so I cannot take credit for that find!)

I’ve been having a great time with the Atelier Colognes. Thanks for putting me on that track! So far, Trefle Pur, Oolang Infiniti, Orange Sanguine (especially layered with Vanilla Insensee), and Vetiver Fatal have really stood out, but it will probably be a while before I figure out which ones will get the most wear, and I haven’t even tried them all yet! On the plus side, 23 samples should keep me busy all summer.

I’ ve only tried one so far – Pogostemon. It was too headshoppy for me – it felt like an oil slick amd unwashed hair. It didn’t smell nasty, just felt unclean. I sprayed on CSP Amour de Cacao to counteract that feeling. I will try it again when the weather is cooler. I have 4 more to try!

As a lifetime Texan (I’ve lived all over the state except the Dallas area), I agree that you should visit in August or September before moving here. I don’t like that heat at all but I am resigned to it. 65 degrees F and misty is my ideal weather.

Texas is an awesome state to live in. I have lived in Houston my entire life (born and raised here) and I couldn’t imagine anywhere else to live. My only complaint is the heat. Some people absolutely love it. I just can’t stand to be hot. I am already hot-natured.

After visiting Michigan recently, where highs were in the low to mid 70s, I am seriously considering moving farther north. Although I would miss the magnolia grandiflora trees.

As a native of central Michigan, I must warn you – the summers are beautiful, but the winters are overcast and last forever. Maybe not quite so far north so you can still see the sun between November and April? :)

Yeah, Michigan & Minnesota have worse winters than western NY, my home region. What they have in common is clouds blown across the Great Lakes almost without interruption, most of the year. No Mental Health Award potential there. Gorgeous in summer though.

I have to avoid edible perfumes like that – they always give me cravings and it’s hard to distract oneself with the aroma present. But if you’re hiking, you can spritz and munch while burning up the calories. ;-)

Also meant to note: have been testing Roja Dove’s Bergdorf Goodman exclusive Bergdorf. My first impression was that it reminded me of Mary Greenwell Plum, but done with a $545 budget. In a side by side test, it’s closer to EL Beautiful, since it lacks Plum’s tart fruit notes. Oddly, it strikes me as an almost cartoonish (but luxurious) version of American department store floral perfumes. I personally prefer the lighter Plum as a floral, and Beautiful as a classic American perfume.

I’m also testing his Creation-R, which I like better.

Perhaps it’s spot-on, at least if BG qualifies as “an almost cartoonish (but luxurious) version of American department store[s].”

I’ve heard unfortunate things about his Tutti Fruttis and wasn’t moved by my single sniffs at the Aoud series. Are his best days behind him? Anyhow I have a very soft spot (with zero budget) for Diaghilev and Fetish Pour Homme. Love to hear your further thoughts on Creation-R.

I bought a sample of Creation-R after reading this 5-bone review on The Scented Hound:

          http://thescentedhound.com/2015/03/09/roja-parfums-risque-creation-r/

I found it softer and less animalic than I expected, but very appealing. Unfortunately, my favorite Roja Dove so far is Diaghilev, but that four-figure price tag is daunting. If only it came in a small size!

I haven’t been interested in the Aouds, either.

Sunshine outside, but there is roadwork being done somewhere in our glen and the sound of a jackhammer is ricocheting off the hills and making me extremely irritable. I have a conference call with an editor today so I am stuck in my office (at home) with this dreadful noise. Sought solace in Chergui… perfect scent for a sunny day when you have to stay inside with all the windows and doors shut tight!

About two minutes after I got off the phone, the jackhammer stopped. It might just be a lunch break, so I am glad I can finally leave the house.

I love our little “dingley dell” as my husband calls it, but loud noises travel and reverberate horribly.

Chergui was a good choice for smoothing out the dissonance.

I may be a chorus of one, but I am a Pear & Olive detractor. It turned my stomach. Milky, oily, over-ripe frootiness…with salt.

I am a fan of Womanity (not remotely the same fragrance, but the two share fruit, milk, and salt in their mix), but on me P+O was a scrubber. Definitely not something I could wear on a hot day.

Pear + Olive only works in cool weather for me unless I’m going to be in freezing air conditioning all day. It is lovely stuff but does have that fattiness that would be hard for me to do in the heat.

Lemon balm I am all too familiar with….love it!
Sweetgrass hydrosol? I am intrigued…off to google Arlys….
wondering also if Eden carries this…they have an excellent cucumber hydrosol……sometimes that is all I need for cooling fragrance….

and I just purchased an incredibly large 1000ml bottle of Peruja lemon blossom cologne from amazon for twenty one dollars….I use this for everything in the summer…(after bath, before bed, freshening up after being outside, a hand sanitizer when combined with anti bacterial essential oils like rosemary, lavender, tea tree, patchouli, peppermint). It can also be “amped up” with any heavier essential oil for a customized EDC ( I have added frankincense, jasmine, amber)

Ooh I’ve never heard of sweetgrass hydrosol. I should have some, shouldn’t I.. lol. I’d never heard of Arlys either, so I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip!

This sounds awesome, leathermountain. I do the same sort of thing myself! I tend to also use birch, spruce and fir in the heat as I find them invigorating but not heating.
      I’ll check out Arlys.
I’d like to suggest that anyone intrigued by the natural stuff check out White Lotus Aromatics. I love their poetic blog, and they’re so informative and genuine. What I’ve bought from them is sincerely exquisite, but the knowledge they share is as valuable.

Thanks for the suggestions, Holly! I’m getting close to replacement levels and those woodsy scents from poetic genuine purveyors of exquisite cooling hydrosols…Who could resist? Please feel free to email me too if you would like to swap hydrosol samples. :)

Wearing L’Air du Desert Marocain, which I enjoy because it lasts and because it feels appropriate in any weather. But I have a dilemma: Silence or Light Blue? The latter is twice as expensive. I want it more, but I can’t make up my mind … more for less or better for more? Heeeeeelp.

Get thee to fragrancenet! There is a twenty percent off sale which means Silences is twenty three dollars and Light Blue is thirty four dollars so you can get both.

Yes, Silences is being discontinued this year as per basenotes. It is my Goldilocks scent, and
chocolatemarzipan is right, fragrancenet is your best option (as far as I know.)
Sometimes if you sign up for their email registry and click on what you want, they’ll offer better discounts when they’ve tracked you and you haven’t purchased yet.

And if you sign up for ebates and enter Fragrancenet through ebates, you get 6% back in cash once a quarter. ebates also works with many other retailers and I always check it before purchasing anything online.

Here in my part of the world it’s one of those rare times in winter when the air is so still and crisp that it almost seems a shame to wear perfume in case even the loveliest scent spoils the purity of the day. However, I need to get on and face my Wednesday, and I want something gorgeous to help me do that. Bois des Iles, judiciously applied, a bright lipstick and a cool head…working together, these three should get me through!

I hope NST in the other hemisphere enjoys an excellent summer afternoon and evening.

That description was sublime….I know exactly what you mean….as much as I detest the cold the scent that emanates from the air on a snowy crisp still morning in the dead of winter is indescribable. I also love the scent of the air in early spring at dawn with vegetation coming back to life…cool, damp, earthy, alive…..there is this unique fragrance in the air that just resonates with me….

Chocolatemarzipan, I’ve never experienced the scent of snow as you describe it (another entry for my B-list!), but I know exactly what you mean about the smell of green things growing. One of my favourite in-the-moment things is to step out of the beating heat of a summer day into the margins of NZ bush. It’s always cool and damp and dim after the brilliant light outside, and if you stand still, the smell of dark green washes over you. I’ve never found a perfume that is the right company for that moment: everything floral or citrus feels too noticeable; anything green seems too light and clean for the dense tangled growth around me.

I’m glad to see you here, waterdragon. It’s rare to hear from someone from your neck of the woods. (I think.) I’ve always been intrigued by New Zealand, so I hope you’ll stick around! I’d like to hear more. :)

Hi, Holly. Thank you for the welcome. Now that I’ve finally de-cloaked after dithering around the edges of NST for about 3 years, I think will stay around. However, I don’t know if A-NZ will feature much in my posts. It’s just home to me, and therefore seems quite ordinary. I love hearing about the delectable perfumes that all of you can sample and buy — that’s definitely intriguing and exotic to me!

This morning I grabbed my rollerball of Momoberry and as soon as I swiped it on my wrists, I realized it had turned and all I could smell was canola oil! (I doubt the carrier oil used is canola oil, but that’s what it smelled like to me.) I was running late for work, so I had to live with it until I got there, where I scrubbed it off. I don’t have any backup perfume at work, so I’m contenting myself with Caudelie hand lotion, which has a very nice, “grape-y” smell.
