Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Memorial Day weekend 2015

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2015 162 Comments

Memorial day parade

Happy Memorial Day to those of you in the USA! And happy weekend to everyone else.

We're celebrating with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're wishing you'd bought when you had the chance, or the one you wish you hadn't bought.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Freschiiissimo again. I can’t wait until my stuff is delivered and I have a few more options for perfume. Am thinking of wandering to a mall to get a few more samples.

Very excited–Mr. Spicebomb and I have just booked plane tickets to Washington, DC in July. Neither of us have explored there before, and I think it’s gonna be a great trip!!! (It also happens to be our 2 year (TWO YEARS!!!) anniversary this July, so that seems like a good celebration!)

I’m guessing I’ll need to pack the Fico di Amalfi, Ninfeo Mio and other light fare? (Cuz, ya’ know, my other option is to just bomb the place with vintage Shalimar or something, and that doesn’t seem very neighborly!)

I’m curious – does Mr. Spicebomb know that’s his nickname here, or know that we’re all following your collective story, or otherwise pay attention to your NST posts? My hubby likes being surprised every morning by whatever fragrance I chose for the day and knows I occasionally post here, but as far as I know has no interest in what I say here about him, or us, or perfume … his attention is usually absorbed by reddit. :) Anyway, just wondering.

I’ve mentioned to him that he’s known as “Mr. Spicebomb.” He doesn’t love it, but I don’t think he really cares. He certainly never visits the site, so he only knows that I talk about us/him, but not the specifics! It seems like a natural off-shoot of the many tales from my online dating days (years!), when I needed the moral support! So yes, sounds similar to your fella. :)

Umm, hate to rain on your parade, but here on the west coast it’s hard to conceptualize how muggy it can get out on the east coast.
The heat and humidity can be intense. PNW humidity is drizzly, cool rain. WA DC humidity is a dense, oppressive , soaking mess. Don’t say you haven’t been warned ;)

Reminds me of the time, years ago myself and several others tried to warn a native PNW room
mate about the winter conditions she should expect in her January DC visit for the Obama Inauguration.
The girl kept saying “I’ll be fine with this jacket and gloves I always wear” and refused to borrow thicker layers from anyone, possibly out of pride and definitely some stubbornness.
Pretty sure it was a rude awakening when she got to DC.
But now she knows cold. …

You might luck out, but, on the average, July is the hottest and most humid month of the year. It’s not unusual to have heat indexes over 100 degrees during the day, and temperatures in the 80s at night. UV is also high (remember, DC is farther south) so you need sunscreen, hats, etc. Offices are often freezing. Museums shouldn’t be so excessively cold. AC in the Metro (subway) system is erratic.

I often take time out from perfume in July because the combination of heat, humidity, UV and sunscreen makes my skin sensitive. :-( It’s the only time of the year that I appreciate Prada Infusion d’Iris, which seems boring at other times but blessedly untaxing and chilled out on very hot days.

As for shops, I wonder when Ari’s perfume shop Shoshana will be opening. She was planning to move to the Mosaic District (in the Northern Virginia part to the DC metropolitan area) in April.

Marjorie Rose, I’m originally from DC and have been back now for a few years. I hope you and Mr. Spicebomb will enjoy your visit! I rarely go where tourists would, but when I do I’m struck by the grandeur of the architecture and the monumental history. When it’s hot and sticky, I look around and appreciate all who came before and fought to establish this country, the nation’s capitol, and our independence. It was a valiant struggle on their part, so I feel I can endure a little sweat and grubbiness out of respect.
Moist towlette type thingies help, too. :)

Happy Upcoming Anniversary, MR! Will you be in DC for the 4th of July festivities? I love them, despite the nasty-hot discomfort of the summer weather. I’ve never been to Our Lady, of course, but it seems she has you well-covered in the fume department. We do have a Santa Maria Novella boutique here in Chevy Chase, but that’s about as close to ‘unique’ as I can think of. (Ari, please hurry with Shoshana!) And Yes to the bug spray and towlettes suggestions!

Marjorie Rose, I’m from No Cal but lived in DC and now NYC. I think NY is worse because of the concrete and subways and just plain dirt. Less humid but grittier. DC on The Mall can be bright, hot and humid… It is where I started wearing Aliage and Chanel No 19. Still love the blast of green in the summer. Towelettes is good, a hat is good, and a cheap fold up fan from Chinatown is something I carry here once the heat starts. I find the fan is something people envy the most.
The monuments at night are great. So lovely…
I just bought som Ban Total Refresh cooling body cloths at Target last night… Never seen them before. We’ll see….
I will NEVER get used to sweating when I’m just sitting still….

SOTD is Jo Malone Red Roses over Blackberry & Bay, as suggested yesterday (by Happycat, I think). So far, I’m liking it. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone as it is now somewhat of a fruity floral, but it’s still grounded with the bay leaf’s earthiness. It’s good to try something new.

There are so many perfume regrets, I can’t name them all. I think most of them involve what I didn’t buy before reformulation, such as Opium and Diorissimo. I wish I had any version of Diorissimo other than what’s out now.

    SOTD = Bvlgari Black

This is one of my safe / family-friendly scents and I am with family today and don’t need to invite controversy over my choice of scent; plus, I love it so it is a win-win.

For those of you who have used Lush Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, besides the scent, what do you like or dislike about it? The other day I had a little bit of time before I needed to be at Penn Station and decided to pop by Lush. The display was so inviting (and I thought it was a hand cream) and I scooped a dollop on my hands. Thank goodness an SA saw me and asked if I wanted to wash my hands. Anyway, all these to say that it felt very good on my hands but I’m not sure how it would be on bigger body parts – could it be too moisturizing (if there is such a thing)? Thanks.

I frequent that Lush a lot and it’s nit always obvious how to use some of their stuff! I’ve only used their solid body conditioners which I like for covering lots of ground in a little time:-) My favorite is King of Skin which I use after bathing. I think they’re all a bit oily. I rub it in well and then towel off. Great for winter but possibly too heavy for summer. The tub stuff is less oily I think.

Cold and rainy = Jicky for me. But if you don’t have that, how about taking advantage of one last chance to wear something warm, spicy, and on the heavier side before summer’s sweltering heat comes along?

I’ve yet to sample Jicky, but it’s on the list! I like your idea of something warm and cozy (Cuir Mauresque? L’Ambre des Merveilles? Knize Ten?) … or should I go contrarian with citrus? Right now I’m being beckoned by bacon and eggs, so still commando while deciding.

Yes, this is my absolute favorite Goutal! The most beautiful, realistic honeysuckle I’ve ever tried. I’m nursing the remains of my bottle…

I believe AGs are showing up at discounters because of the change in packaging. I purchased my bottle of Songes in 2008 and it’s still excellent. I have Passion and Heure Exquise from the 1990s that are great – these were in there original boxes. I purchased a partial bottle of one of the lighter fragrances that wasn’t great. The cap was dusty – looked like it had been kept out on a dresser or bathroom shelf.

I may pull the trigger on the Songes, then! I think it was mostly the Petite Cherie that people complained about turning, although I’ve seen a few comments floating around about Goutals turning bad, no qualifier.

I think it depends on the scent. Petite Chérie is notorious for turning, and I have heard people complaining about Gardénia Passion as well. I keep all of my Goutals in the fridge, which they seem to be enjoying.
It’s a good thing that my fridge is big ;)

I am wearing Slumberhouse Kiste today. I did all of my errands this morning and then came home and put on a nice amount. Didn’t want to take any chances driving around with it on, as the boozy note is very pronounced on me! It does settle down, though, and then the peach is there (without being too “peachy” if that makes sense) and I get some floral notes. The tobacco note is mellow, I think. The tonka bean is there a little more as the day goes on. Really like this one!

I wish I would have purchased a bottle of Andy Tauer Zeta when it was out there. Wonder if it will re-appear. Hope so!

Hi everyone! Today I’m wearing Parfum MDCI Peche Cardinal. I’m still trying to figure out if I like it or not. I’m not a fan of coconut in large doses (with the exception of the coconut in Carnal Flower) and this is definitely more coconut-heavy than I usually like. OTOH, the peach note in this is beautiful.

Not perfume-related, but: can anyone recommend a surefire method of GETTING RID OF ANTS? My house is infested and it’s driving me nuts! I’ve swept the floor clean, made sure all food in the house is properly sealed, and they still keep coming. I’d rather not use store-bought pesticides because they make me light-headed, but I’m at a loss.

Have you tried a diatomaceous earth barrier? It works well if you can keep it dry and isn’t terribly harmful to anything but insects. I usually buy it at the feed store to be sure I get food grade ’cause of the kitties.

Instant grits work too. Sprinkle them in the ants path. It dessicates them or something. They carry them back to their nest, and kills some ants there too.

I had an ant issue AND we have kitties. I sprayed pesticide down into cracks where I could see them trailing in and put down enclosed ant bait and they disappeared. I think boric acid may work for ants as well. The kitties were unharmed :-)

With so many of them, I’m afraid you probably have a nest of them somewhere under your house, and until that is found and removed/destroyed you’ll never be free of them. There are companies that specialize in non-toxic pest control – I recommend hiring experts over trying to do it yourself.

Ugh, I really hope that is not the case (although I might’ve mischaracterized my ant problem in my earlier post — I usually see about 5-6 in one area at a time, so I wouldn’t say my house is SWARMING with ants, but there definitely are a bunch of them.) I think I might try the above tips first just because they’re pretty low-cost low-effort anyway – and if they fail I’ll definitely call in the experts :)

If you can figure out where they are getting in, sprinkling cinnamon in their path will keep them away. I tried it with a horrific ant invasion a few years ago and it really worked. Plus the cinnamon smells nice. (I have no idea whether it’s safe for kitties, though.)

This will sound stupid, but honestly those little plastic raid things, the ones that cost slightly more and say “2 kinds of food” or something, work like a dream for us. Put them right in the middle of where they’re walking, usually they’re all dead within about 24 hours. The cheaper ones never did a thing.

We have been pouring concrete on and off all day and keep getting rained out. I am a mess but don’t dare try to shower due to the storms (no power= no water) so I figured I would wear something to compliment my funk and dabbed on a bit of O Hira. If I ever win the lotto I’m shelling out for a bottle or two for sure.
We just had a couple of big lightning strikes in front of the house. I’m eager to go look at the cypress trees to see which were hit. Ooh, and the kitties are all slinking around now – so cute!

No, I think he was just too “polite” to say anything to me directly. Also, I am graduating soon (he is my research advisor). More than anything, it might be symbolic of other silly little misunderstandings between us that could have easily been fixed with a little prompt communication :( Oh well.

I think the funniest (saddest?) part is that meeting with my advisor makes me really nervous, and when I am nervous I put on more perfume! A vicious cycle.

I’m in Marrakech staying at a stunning riad called Riad Khol. The interior decoration is by a French designer, and my moody dark rooms are called Datura Noir. At first I thought ‘how cool, just like the Lutens’.. then I looked at the names on the doors..: Chypre Rouge, Ambre Sultan.. OMG of all the places in Marrakech to stay i picked the perfumista one!! :)

Well, this is a much more dangerous lemming than any perfume… I have had this idea for a long time to name different bathrooms in the house after different scents (jasmine, sandalwood, iris…) and have them outfitted with matching soaps and candles and hand creams. But maybe I should do actual perfumes or more complex themes? It doesn’t quite match your Morocco experience, but one needs to console oneself somehow :) Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Happy Memorial Day weekend for all who celebrate! I’m not sure how much celebrating we will be able to do here in Houston, TX. We have been receiving a lot of rain lately and it doesn’t seem like it will be letting up anytime soon. According to our weather forecast, we can expect rain through next Wednesday. We are all so sick of the rain. Well, to end the Jo Malone theme for the week, my SOTD is Tuberose Angelica. I am a fan of tuberose, so this was a somewhat easy choice for the day. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

To be honest, I like Estee Lauder’s Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia a bit better. Tuberose Angelica is nice in its own right as well, but not as strong as you would think. TG actually lasts longer that TA. If you like Tuberose, you would enjoy both of these fragrances. The tuberose is dominant in both but the other notes give each a different “flare”.
You get more bang for your buck with the Estee Lauder, IMO. :)

I was a scent schizophrenic today: Started with BFMV, then spin class, shower, and then Dark Horse for a day of be-bopping around. Found myself at NM and had to a drive-by for a spritz of MFK Absolue Pour le Soir, then got sidetracked to VC&A and test drove California Reverie and Bois something-or-other, and lastly a spritz of something I cant remember the name of but was a nice patchouli in a sexy black and gold bottle. Really nice until I heard the price tag. Funny, the SA pronounced BOIS “boys”! That gave me a chuckle. Anyway, I am very fragrant at the moment! I just love the evolution of Absolue.

I spent the day in a Defensive Driving class in order to reduce my car insurance premiums. Unfortunately, there were written handouts and the class consisted of the instructor reading the salient points from the handouts. Next time I’ll do an online class. I wore Eau des Merveilles but it only lasted to about mid-morning. However, I went shopping for new hiking pants afterward and got a nice pair.

Hi, Kanuka. Many years ago I had the good fortune to visit New Zealand–such a beautiful place! I was there in mid-August, so the weather was still chilly. I remember that calla lilies were blooming, though, at least on the North Island. That puts me in mind of Tom Ford’s Shanghai Lily, which is gorgeous although not really “cheerful.” For a summery take, I like Baiser Vole EdT. Stay well and warm!

Thank you. I have Baiser Vole EDT and perfectly matches my place up on the hills …very green and a bit bitter! Tom Ford may be a little hard to get. Not many sites ship perfume to NZ or, if they do, the freight can be around $60 . Snowed in today so I may have to stick with perfumed candles , cups of coffee and two snugly dogs. I will wear Cartier, and warm wishes to you!

The Neiman Marcus in Walnut Creek has a terrific selection of perfumes. Much better than Nordstoms. The clerks are more keen to help you buy something at NM, but if you are clear you are just sampling I find they graciously just let you get on with it. Nordies lets you fill up your own samples, however! Sorry the weather isn’t better for you! And of course I hope your father is doing okay.

Given the two that you’re already wearing I think you’ll have more fun at NM as Oakland Fresca suggested, but the last time I was in my Nordies I saw that they had most of the Aqua Allegorias there. I gues Sephora doesn’t carry them anymore. Nothing groundbreaking, but something different than other stores.

I’m so glad you will get to spend some quality time with your dad before his surgery. I wish you all the best when the surgery happens.

I have been curious what this smells like. Is it like any other tuberose scent you have tried? I love tuberose so that is why I am asking. I know it is in the intense collection so was wondering if it is really strong.

Oh, this was supposed to go under Scentfromabove’s posting. Will try again. Sorry.

Well, I’m trying to figure out how to change my my payment option on something that I purchased on Ebay due to the fact that I just breezed through the checkout without even looking. But today, I am thinking of trying out Velvet Gardenia.

I adore Velvet Gardenia and cannot complain enough about it being discontinued.

No scent so far, as I’m recovering from my boyfriend’s birthday party. I wore Lyric yesterday with my deep red lace dress and matching red lips and I think it worked beautifully. It’s finally getting warmer here, I have the door to the garden open and the evening sun peeks in through the windows and it’s all quite lovely. I plan to drink some Mariage Freres Iskandar and read and think about my SOTE. I hope you’re all having at least as nice a weekend.

Lyric is absolutely fabulous when it’s 90 degrees out, it really blooms in heat.

Testing L’Artisan Caligula on one arm, and Serge Lutens Jeau de Peau on the other. (Total spelling Fail).

      Hello nebbe!
Yikes! Caligula, hate to think what that may smell like! ;)
