Thursday scent of the day 5/21

Posted by Robin on 21 May 2015 150 Comments

Assam tea

Happy strawberries & cream day! What's your fragrance?

I'm wearing Jo Malone Assam & Grapefruit. Tea at the moment: Upton Jade Mao Feng.

Reminder: this Friday, 22 May, wear something from Jo Malone or perfumer Christine Nagel.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is BV Knot. The first time I tried it I didn’t care for it, but the second time is a charm. I think I just over sprayed the last time. Good for the nice spring weather today.

I have only sampled a handful, I was repulsed by the rose in this one and eventually came around…
It is really strong upon application and then fairly quickly fades.

I’m in Premier Figuier Extreme. I’ve been in a figgy mood lately. I adore PFE, though it comes second to Philosykos, the best fig ever.

I LOVE Philosykos but it doesn’t last on me. Does PFE last longer??

It lasts a little longer I think, but the in the later stages I get more sandalwood and less fig, which is why I like Philosykos a little bit more. PFE is lovely though; it’s softer and more floral. I have the solid perfume of Philosykos, which I keep in my bag so I can reapply, since it doesn’t last that long on me either.

I was really surprised at the lasting power of the Pacifica Mediterranean Fig I wore yesterday, very impressive! And very nice if you like a green, unripened fig.

I’m amazed that Serge Lutens did three different roses and managed to have them be so different and yet all good. Sa Majesté la Rose is definitely the best of the three (to my nose): if I were going to own a full bottle of any of them it would be that one.

    SOTD Guerlain Vetiver.

Slices right through the thick, humid air and gives me a bit of energy. I have been spaying lavishly and really enjoying this one.

It’s supposedly a tester but I don’t think it was ever used because not only is it full, but I had to depress the pump several time to get to the juice. It’s missing the cap but who cares? I got it for a song! I love when that happens :)

Years ago a friend passed on an unwanted jar of Samsara cream (or creme). It was great quality and not too scented. It was the first time it struck me that something I might not wear as the perfume could be just fine as a body product.

Got up at 6, put on a couple of shots of Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete, tropical carnation magic. An hour later, figured it wasn’t enough, so added two spritzes of CDG Carnation, aka Attack of the Killer Carnations. By 10:45 it had faded enough that I decided it was time for a few blasts of Caron Coup de Fouet. Yeah, it’s carnation day. Who knows? I might wear vintage Old Spice after I shower.

It’s not VINTAGE vintage, unfortunately: it’s probably fifteen years old, but frankly anything that old counts as vintage these days because of the changes brought about by regulation. Old Spice in the stores now doesn’t smell as good as what I have (I check from time to time), and what I have probably doesn’t smell as good as the Old Spice our fathers wore.

I’m getting ready for Friday and wearing Wood Sage and Sea Salt, one of my favourites from Jo Malone. I always have this embarrassing impulse to also mention what clothes I wear, because it plays a big role in my SOTD decision (or the other way around). I originally planned to wear Birch & Black Pepper, but WS&SS works much better with my pale grey cashmere sweater and even paler midi pencil skirt.

Seeing the photo of tea and that it’s strawberry & cream day reminded me of when I was gifted a glass teapot for my birthday. My fiance bought it from Adagio Teas and I got a sample of my “birthday tea”, which is Libra from their zodiac tea series. It was strawberry and chocolate, but it was a creamy and smooth as well. I really want more of that tea now thinking about it.

Coffee for me this morning, but may switch to some oolong this afternoon.

I’ve been trying to use up samples this week and feel like I’ve been wearing lots of “weak” scents. Yesterday’s oxymusc was awful, but today’s Chloe Roses is slightly better. All of this is in preparation for JoMa tomorrow. I’m not a huge fan and have some samples I need to use up.

Have you tried Love Tea #7 from David’s Tea? It is also a strawberry/chocolate (black) tea that has a smooth creamy taste.
Is Libra (my zodiac too :-) ) a black tea as well?

Robin, I know you’ve got perfume commitments, so this might not apply to you in the same way. But for the regular perfumista-on-the-street, I always vote for wearing it right now. And then I hoard my own ‘good stuff,’ against my own advice. It’s kind of funny what primal urges our perfume reveals, even apart from all those urge-y smells.

Scent of the day is Coromandel, which I haven’t worn in a very long time. At first, it reminds me a little of Shalimar, but as frankincense sometimes does, this goes the tiniest bit sour on me. I still like Coromandel, but Chanels never quite feel at home on my skin.

Speaking of AE – I was at a kind of more free-form family and friends baby shower a few days ago. I was talking to these people that I’d just met, when this woman (an old teacher of the dad) just kind of gracefully sauntered in and this amazing cloud of AE came in with her. I do enjoy wearing AE, but I enjoy smelling it on other people more. She was amazing.

I can totally appreciate that. The sillage from a distance is the best part, but wearing it more often has made me fonder of the opening and the more difficult parts of it.

Next to the last scent in my Nest coffret is Dahlia & Vines. When I first put it on, I couldn’t smell it, the top notes seem to be something I am anosmic to. However, I am now smelling more so the damp, warm day may be either helping my nose or helping the scent develop.

I am working through a five scent coffret of .25 oz. minis that I purchased for $30 at Sephora online. I no longer see that deal on the Sephora website. So far I’ve tried 4 of the five fragrances. I liked Paradise and Indigo very much. I was less impressed with White Sandalwood, but it is considered a men’s fragrance and that may have prejudiced me. I am wearing Dahlia & Vines today, and when I put it on initially I really couldn’t smell it, but now I can. So far my favorites have been Paradise and Indigo. I feel that the price I paid for the coffret was certainly worth what I received.

Happy “Friday Eve” everyone! Continuing with the “Jo Malone” theme, my SOTD is a mixture of Sakura Cherry Blossom and Pomegranate Noir. The two together brings out both the cherry and pomegranate. Just FYI for those that aren’t aware, but ALL of the Jo Malone fragrances are designed to be combined with another. So, you can’t make a mistake with it. One of the executive directors from the company shared this with me. Now, I am truly going to start combining everything to see if I can make some new scents I will enjoy. Have a good day everyone!

I mix and match several of them. I keep a supply of the crèmes and lotions so I can put those on first and the cologne over them. That brand works about the best for me of any of them out there. I guess I like the more subtle notes.

Today I’m wearing vintage Eau de Givenchy. It’s such a gorgeous creamy light floral with really subtle honey facets. Although it’s light, it has many layers and it is a rather complex perfume. Beautiful and just perfect for today’s weather, sunny and warm .

Hmm, strawberries and cream day, wish I had a scent that captured those lovely aromas! But the sun finally came out today after several days’ absence and my strawberry plants are responding gratefully with lots of blooming white flowers, so I will wait patiently for the blossoms to turn into luscious fruits.

My lilacs are still blossoming and I am, too, in Pacifica French Lilac.

I think a lilac scent is next on my to buy list. Do you know how the Pacifica one compares to others, such as En Passant? I’m curious if any are worth the $ or if I should just but a cheap one and spray as much as I want.

I could have purchased 20 bars of pine tar soap for what the Terre D’Hermes cost. I might have preferred the soap! I think I am having a bit of an olfactive breakdown. Many fragrances I normally love I am finding annoying and not pleasant to wear. Hopefully it is just a phase that will pass quickly.

SOTD is English Pear & Freesia. I like the overripe pear, almost boozy (it smells just like our backyard when I was a kid and tons of pears had fallen down the trees and been left to lay on the ground for too long! Sounds yucky, but I like it!). Probably better for Fall though.

I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever smelled real Wisteria, so I can’t say. My guess is no. It seems to be more like non-descript, pretty-enough, light floral. Not bad, just missing that special something.

SOTD = Jo Malone Birch & Black Pepper

Warm, spicy, leans a touch masculine. This was my favorite of the most recent launch. I’m still waitng for the dry down which I understand has vanilla but so far it has remained elusive. I have not tried layering this although it seems that it will play nicely with several notes – rose? vanilla? amber?

I’ve been playing with that one a lot lately. Anything sweet tends to work well. Vanilla and Anise was good, as was Nectarine Blossom and Honey. Pomegranate Noir seems like it was just destined to be a match. (No surprise since they were in the Rock of Ages line together.) Wild Fig and Cassis, not so much. They were two sharp fragrances up against each other. And that was the bath oil – much softer than the spray would have been. I never got a vanilla drydown. When I wear it I smell like a campfire until I go to sleep. The next morning it’s just yesterday’s smoke until I shower. I don’t know if that’s good or not.

Wearing Theorema (woman’s – the man’s version makes me smell like pizza), one of my favourite perfumes. Oranges, spice, cream, and amber – a wonderful scent that is gourmand/oriental, but doesn’t smell like cake (not that there is anything wrong with that!).
The JM’s I have are Nutmeg and Ginger, and French Lime Blossom, both great, but when I wear Theorema I usually become so charmed by it I wear it for many consecutive days. YMMV :)

Hello everyone. I haven’t posted here very much lately, at least in the sotd threads, due to my sense of smell being knocked out by a cold. It seems to be on the mend now. The mayday trees are in bloom here and i can smell their fragrance from a block away. I wonder if the blossoms would yield an absolute?

As for my sotd, I just sprayed on some L’Eau de L’Artisan. My bottle arrived from fragrancex today (along with a fragrancex nail file. Hooray?). I’m so pleased to have this on hand again. It will definitely get a lot of use this summer.

Hello Everyone! It’s just been one of those weeks that was so busy at work I had no time to sneak away and visit. Finally, today, I am happy to be back. I put on some of the original formula of Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere. I just love the stuff and I think I’ve made up my mind to finally commit to a back up bottle.

Three unusual fragrance things happened to me this week. 1. Every once in a while I get kind of hypnotized by the designer’s impostor display at the local drug store – the only frag counter around – and I ended up with the “little sexy” version of Red by Giorgio Beverly Hills. I forgot my sister used to wear Red, or how good and cinnamony it is! All these oldie orientals were the original gourmands before things went all cupcake. I see all the references to Theorema above, and she’s right there too. 2. A woman came to our library bake sale and smelled sooo good. I asked her what she was wearing, and she said Crush by Liz Claiborne. I had no idea. Anyone? 3. One of my library board officers wants to unload some vintage No 19 edt, so I am totally excited about that! It’s a donation to the library so I’m trying to figure out how much I should give her that’s fair.

You could use ebay as a way to measure a fair price, and comparing the buy it now prices or final auction price (using the watch function, maybe).
Not a perfect system, but that might be the place i would start :)

And congrats on the find! Go libraries!
