It's Tuesday. I hope everyone else is more awake than I am. What's your fragrance today?
I'm wearing Sì by Giorgio Armani, developed by perfumer Christine Nagel. Tea at the moment: a black Ceylon tea from St. Clair in Sri Lanka, via Upton.
Reminder: this Friday, 22 May, wear something from Jo Malone or perfumer Christine Nagel.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is Josephine Le Tutour for Giorgio Armani, Spring 2015.
I just saw, when checking out the Nagel list yesterday, that she did both Si and Miss Dior Cherie, which makes sense because the first time I smelled Si I noticed the ghost of the old MDC, that strawberry thing.
I’m wearing Smell Bent Mirror Ball.
Love the name Mirror Ball!
Me too, even if it doesn’t fit the perfume!
Paco Rabanne Calandre. This was my “signature scent” decades ago. I still adore it.
Lately Misia has been like a signature scent. I’ve been wearing Calyx often, too, thanks to Swapmeet.
I love Calandre! I wore that and Metal decades ago as well.
Same here….with both the wearing and loving of Calandre and Metal.
Anyone know Eau de Calandre, and how it relates?
I believe it may be the same? The Calandre I wore and loved was the original and I am sure it must have been re-formulated over the years.
and if it helps any Calandre and Metal were Paco Robanne (forgive me if I misspell)
From my mini investigation I think they are the same Eau de Calandre and Calandre. Released in 1969 and still in production (or so it said on one site) and can still be purchased.
A quick read on Fragrantica indicates they both came out in 1969. The notes listed are not the same, so it seems they’re two different fragrances. I have no idea how the current version of Calandre is, as mine is the original.
I own Calandre edt. I don’t remember Eau de Calandre.
Wearing Drole de Rose by Giacobetti. I’m currently drinking Wedding Imperial by MF. I had some very good Ceylon yesterday. New Vithinakande.
I will look that tea up, thanks! And you smell great.
Upton has it. I think I have the most expensive one. Very fine leaves with lots of silvery tips.
DdR is great fun.
Thanks!
Getting ready to toss my small bunch of lilac from a neighbor’s shrub. Reminds me I still need to give En Passant a shot. In addition to perfumistahood, hanging at NST is turning me into a teaista as well!
I was a teaista way before becoming a perfumista, and now the 2 inspire and reinforce eachother. In my heart of hearts I like tea more.
Agreed…they do indeed go hand in hand.
The temperature has dropped again, so I thought I would try something that I wouldn’t use in heat. SOTD is Amouage Epic Woman. I just can’t decide about this one. There is a very cold note that makes me think of medicine or muscle rub that I am just not sure I like.
Okay, yes, now the menthol-y note seems to be less intense and I feel the need to constantly huff myself.
Surfing The Sample Sea, Cuir Cannage. An initial mentholated floral blast when I spritzed about an hour ago. I’m getting a lot of ylang ylang out of it now, and for some reason I’m reminiscing about the smell of new dolls. Specifically, Madame Alexander dolls in their beautiful pink tissue lined blue boxes waiting under the Christmas tree. Once in a while, after great exertion, I sense a tarry leather lurking. It’s interesting, but not what I expected at all.
What a great description!
🙂
Oh, I had one of those when I was a kid! I think my mother liked it more than I did, which is probably why she gifted it to me one Christmas long ago.
No one here will be surprised that a major part of the thrill for me was the new doll scent. I’ve always wanted to try CBIHP Doll’s Head to see how it compares.
Ha! I had one too. It was the Alice in Wonderland doll from about 1967. Since it was a fancy doll, I always had to play gently with it so it’s still in very good condition. It’s in a shoebox around here somewhere.. Now i want to find it and smell its head.
It’s promising to be another hot, humid day in DC – summer arrived way too early this year – so I’m in Lys Mediterranee, one of my favorite warm weather scents. And I’m chugging coffee to wake up!
It’s after lunch and I am still not awake. Might be hopeless for the day…
I blame the heat. I switched to No 19 to wake me up…not working so far.
Although it’s not cold, it’s foggy and feels gloomy. Went with JCrew no 57 for the boozey sandalwood.
Gloomy here too…
I might do a JM week, since I like so many of their offerings, starting today with Blackberry & Bay (from a sample; I’m thinking of putting the small FB on my wish list).
I wore B&B yesterday! You smell great!
Thanks!
I had a small sample of the body cream and it was lovely. I might buy it in this form instead (I find I tend to use up body lotions far more easily than perfumes…)
I wore this today also. I drained my FB, so it is probably time to buy another. I only have a few more samples left. Glad to see that there are some JM lovers here. I felt lonely for the longest time. We have spectacular taste! 🙂
Wearing Apres l’Ondee and it’s still beautiful. But the real news is that my neighbourhood dealer/best perfume shop in Brussels now carries Vacances. Unfortunately, by the time I found it, I had already sprayed myself with several perfumes, so my impressions may not be entirely accurate. Anyway, my first reaction is that it’s lovely, but very similar to En Passant. I thought I even smelled En Passant’s cucumber in there, but it was probably the “fresh, green forest accord” the press material mentions. I definitely do get a realistic lilac note, although Vacances is not a 100% soliflore, there are other (abstract) blooms as well. If you like lilac perfumes or tender florals, I certainly recommend trying this one. If possible, without 4 other perfumes competing for your nose at the same time.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve grown into En Passant, after years of ambivalence towards it.
I like En Passant a lot and am wondering if it would make any sense to own both. Although I’m sure when I try them side-by-side, I’ll discover they are in fact totally different…
Oh, is this the recent rerelease of Vacances? I am very anxiously awaiting my split.
Yes, the new one – I’ve been waiting for it for ages (or so it seems). I didn’t have the presence of mind to ask for a sample, I would really like to try it again.
Wearing OJ Woman today. It’s great on a humid, overcast, but not too hot day.
My officemate came back from a trip today, and had a tatami mat in her luggage. For a little while, it perfumed our small office with that great tatami scent.
That’s what I think of when people say ‘hay notes’
I love hay notes! And I definitely get hay from tatami. But I get something just a little greener/wetter than hay. Grass, I guess. 🙂 And even though it’s kind of a green scent overall, it is also a bit sweet. One of my favorite things about visiting Japan was staying in rooms with tatami mats, and having that scent lull me to sleep.
Drained my SL L’Orpheline decant and unfortunately, it may have been a waste. It’s really humid today and draining the life out of my scent.
I’m barely awake myself, Robin. It was too cloudy this morning to wake me up and took me forever to drag myself from the bed.
LOVE that image for today.
I am seriously considering a nap.

Omg, that snake skin looking coat! Gorg!
I am continuing with my Jo Malone theme for the week. My SOTD is BlackBerry and Bay. Perfect for the season and if you like fruity fragrances. Not to sweet nor tart.
Scent twin!
I too find it has the right balance of sweetness and tartness.
Yeeeaaaa! So, what is your favorite Jo Malone? Have you tried any of her fragrances from the Jo loves line?
I like quite a few of their line up: Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Earl Grey & Cucumber, Wild Fig & Cassis, English Pearl & Freesia… My favourite change from time to time!
I never tried any from the Jo Loves unfortunately, since they aren’t available in Canada. Have you?
I went of Amazon and bought No. 42 The Flower Shop. I also went to the site online and ordered the sample “Shot Box “. I paid an arm and a leg for shipping. But it was worth it. The fragrances are like her original scents when she first started her JM line.
Siwa by Memo. (A sample from Sniffapalooza). Cinnamon Narcissus and Vanilla. A very nice spring and summer scent. The cinnamon lifts the floral vanilla so it feels lighter. However the cinnamon does not become an overwhelming “hot ball” scent that takes over.
I’ve been interested in the Memo collection. This sounds nice.
Narcissus, eh? Sounds interesting!
Pogostermon by Fiele Fragrances…. a cocoa patchouli that veers on the sweet side. I rather like it.
Is it Angel-ish?
Goodness, not to my nose! Much more subtle and the drydown is sweetened by the vanilla. There is also a powdery element….it was perfect and innocuous enough to wear to two important morning meetings but when I returned to my office I reapplied but with Fiele Myrrha underneath….NOW I am really loving it! (Myrrha also has a powdery/balsamic vibe). I can’t fully explain this but because they are made with essential oils they just smell different to me, and different in a way that makes me really like them (but unlike some other naturals I have experienced they don’t come across as “unfinished”…if this makes any sense?)
Makes perfect sense!
It does, thanks!
I’m continuing on with my Nest coffret, and wearing Indigo. I enjoyed Paradise yesterday, and so far I’m enjoying Indigo too. I will say that the sillage is minimal and so is the lasting power. I am using a mini splash bottle, rather than a spray, so that is probably affecting both. The scents themselves are very pretty. Not challenging, not complex, but very pretty. Sometimes pretty is more than enough
“Very pretty” is often more than enough 🙂
This week I have decided to wear my samples from FM.
Today I am wearing Cologne Indélebile. This is a like for me, it is nice but doesn’t justify its price.
Is the Si growing on you? I know you weren’t too wild about it at first. I’d never tried it, weirdly, but then my graduating medical residents this year gave me a box of minis last week, along with a gift certificate to purchase the juice I liked the best from the seven minis. (Thoughtful gift!) One of them was Si, and I have to say I liked it more than I expected… though not enough to use the certificate on it. It kind of wore on me as the day went on, but I liked the middle stages, just before the patch went away.
I would say no — thought it was likable then and still do, and I understand why it’s as popular as it is. But still don’t need any!
I’m in the No-to-Si crowd, too. To me it smells overwhelmingly plasticky and artificial and one-dimensional. Actually, I prefer La vie est belle, an admission I’m sure will get me stoned to death by Angel minis. Mind you, I’m not wild about the latter, either, but the two do get frequently compared.
Ha — admit I’d way rather wear Si. Not sure who is in the position to throw Angel minis here though!
Oud & Bergamot today (Jo Malone) 🙂
I have that in the spray oil version, which I used the heck out last year. There is about 1/4″ left but it seems to have turned, sadly. You smell great!
That was one of the scents that came in the gift set this past holiday season that I got for my mom. Smells amazing!
FM Une Rose. Just wow.
Yep.
I’m wearing Tom Ford Shanghai Lily today. I’ve found that if I spray liberally and get a little on my clothes it lasts a lot longer than if it’s just on skin. For Friday, I have nothing. I gave away the few samples of Jo Malone I had because they’re just not my style and I have nothing by Nagel. Isn’t it odd how some perfumers just seem to “fit” you and others don’t?
I do get what you mean. I’m not a JoMa fan either, but I do still have some samples I can wear for Friday. Or maybe I’ll look through Nagel’s list to see if I have anything else that qualifies.
JM doesn’t fit me either, though I found a sample of Black Vetyver Cafe that I haven’t tried yet, so that’ll be Friday’s scent, most likely – unless I get distracted 🙂
Love Shanghai Lily … You smell fabulous 🙂
SOTD is Chanel Bel Respiro — green + leather. I enjoy how the scent keeps shifting.
TOTD is Harney’s Earl Grey Supreme — thanks for the recommendation, Robin!
Love Bel Respiro, although can’t say I get much leather out of it.
And incidentally, I noticed Earl Grey Supreme in the morning, at the hotel bar where I buy my morning cappuccino…
Funny, I’m getting more leather than green, and wishing for more green 🙂 I’m dabbing from a sample though, perhaps it’s different from a spray?
I had a spray decant, but it’s gone now, so I cannot check. It wasn’t that green on me, more like a greenish, slightly herby floral, but I don’t recall any leather.
Pentachord Verdant, with excellent results.
I like that one.
Yesterday I saw that others were starting the Jo Malone project early. Lord knows I have enough to participate for a whole month, so I’m joining in for the rest of the week. SOTD is Birch and Black Pepper over Wild Fig and Cassis Bath Oil. It’s a good fit for the cold, overcast day. I can’t believe I had the air conditioning on yesterday and today we need the heat on!
I bought a small bottle of Birch and Black Pepper recently and I’m very happy with it.
I’m glad to see it has many fans. I think it was the first of the collection to completely sell out here. I expected to like it the least of the five and it turned out to be my favorite. It’s unique, and so out of character for their brand. I feel like it gives me some sort of urban-rock edge when I wear it – nothing like the simple, classic appearance I keep on a daily basis.
I’m also gald it’s popular and also thought it very unusual for JM. But in a way, it’s exactly what they do well: taking a concept and making it wearable. But it still has that edge: to me it’s somehow a bit rock, a bit Victoriana. I enjoy it.
Also in Birch & Black Pepper, suited this gloomy day.
How did the Wild Fig and the Birch work together? Just curious.
It’s a bit on the sharp side. The bath oil makes it just soft enough to wear; I don’t think I’d like it with the fig and cassis spray. I’ve also done it with the Nectarine Blossom and Honey bath oil and I liked that better.
With Foxbins, Jenkr and Pixel… have not yet fallen in love with any of the JM’s I’ve tried. I was still surprised to discover that I do not own a single perfume by Nagel–not even a decant or a sample. Nada. Strange.
Today I am wearing an old friend–EL’s Knowing. For me, it is a comfort scent.
You can add me as a fifth non-JM’er. I have a sample of only one and it’s a rare one not created by Nagel. You smell wonderful! Never owned Knowing but love it.
Nagel is worth seeking out, she has done some stunning and very diverse work.
I’ve never tried a single Jo Malone fragrance.
My godmother who just passed away used to wear that. We would get her the gift set every Christmas because she loved it so. It will be a while before I can smell that fragrance again. Bittersweet. But, beautiful fragrance.
Knowing from EL, that is.
Wearing Knowing as well! luckily..I still have 6 tubes of the bodycreme, the last ones available last year.
Where I live, people don’t compliment ..ever..on nothing.
making a walk in the evening a man with kids almost screamed ..wow…you smell amaaaaazing haha!!
No 5 Eau Premiere today. Today is starting off cool but supposed to get warm this afternoon.
Just remembered. ..3 day weekend coming up! Woohoo!
4-day weekend for some although I have a late Friday night meeting related to an application patch for one of my projects.
I’m so glad you two had this conversation…I thought Memorial weekend was coming up, but Mr. Lucy convinced me that I was wrong and that it was the following one. He has a very important meeting on Saturday that he would have missed. THANK YOU!
Lucy, Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, so this weekend is Memorial Day weekend.
Phew! That was close then 🙂
Hope it goes smoothly!
Thanks!
Several comments yesterday reminded me that I have an untried sample of SSS Rose Musc (probably because I generally avoid scents with a prominent musk note, not being a fan) so Rose Musc is my SOTD. The musk is light, fortunately, and the rose rich and lovely. Not exactly rose petals, however, the amber and labdanum adding more of a fall/winter dimension. I like but don’t love and much prefer her Velvet Rose.
SOTD Guerlain Vetiver- another successful blind buy and great for the hot sticky weather we have here. I wish it had a bit more oomph though. I find I have to get my nose right down to my skin to get a whiff of it- maybe I need to have a heavier hand with this one.
I’m not much of tea drinker because it’s just too hot here to enjoy hot teas. However, I have been researching kombucha tea and may try to “brew” some up. I like the idea of it but the reality may be a different story!
Anyone have any experience with kombucha tea?
We drink lots of kombucha in my house but I am not sure this is the same as kombucha tea…it is an acquired taste but once you get used to it not bad…very high in probiotics from what I have been told…
Yes, that’s exactly why I want to start brewing it! It’s essential to eat/drink fermented foods daily to maintain good gut health. I know it’s rather expensive to buy by the bottle, so I thought I try brewing my own. More cost effective, and increases the budget for perfume 😉
Funny story but the first bottle I bought three years ago I bought only because it was brewed with lavender! Nowadays I am not always on the lookout for floral notes…just be careful brewing it yourself for I believe I read somewhere that if not made properly can make you quite sick …..(in other words, follow exact directions and get new and sterilized supplies)
Yes, I have been doing some in depth research about that. Very interested in the second ferment after bottling and adding fruit/edible flowers. I hope I don’t kill myself with this science experiment but the key is to encourage the growth of good bacteria and avoid the bad bacteria and molds. If I suddenly stop posting, you’ll know why! 😉
Oh let us hope it does not come to that! But do be careful…and let us know how you get on! (I might be inspired to try it myself as the store bought can be quite pricey!)
Glad you opted for the Guerlain Vetiver and that you are enjoying it. With your kind of weather, I just knew you would, I love it in the hot, sticky summer, very refreshing!
Laila, it’s very likable and refreshing! Very happy with my purchase. It’s a very optimistic and invigorating scent, which is so welcome in these dog days of summer 🙂
Deva, have you looked into making water kefir? I used to make it several years ago and it’s easy and tasty. Very cheap, too. The kefir crystals are around $12 and they multiply like bunnies once you hit on the right temp/food source combination. I thought about trying kombucha, but was intimidated. Water kefir was a nice ‘starter project’.
Wearing Theorema today bc a) it’s chilly outside, b) I needed something cozy and reassuring today, and c) for once, my perfume ‘needs’ lined up perfectly with a Friday theme!
No, I have not heard of making my own water kefir! It’s something to check out for sure. What does it taste like? I never had plain old kefir either so maybe it’s time for me to branch out?
The trick to kombucha seems to be the ph levels. I’m excited to get brewing! Running check out water kefir now..:)
PS: Theorema is legendary it seems! One day I’m a gonna get my sniffer on it…
Never really clicked with Jo Malone, but I might have a sample or two around. I saw that Christine Nagel did Si Lolita too, so I might go with that for Friday.
SOTD is Slumberhouse Norne (h/t Pixel). I’m really enjoying it. It’s like a slightly sweet fir incense with a hint of campfire.
Tea is Mighty Leaf Organic Spring Jasmine green tea.
The weather in Los Angeles won’t make up its mind; cool, overcast, and chilly in the morning, humid and hot in the afternoon. I wake up and think I should wear something comforting and, by 3 o’clock, wish I could spray myself in the face with ice water.
So right now I’m in Dame Perfumery Black Flower Mexican Vanilla, which I adore. Ask me again later this afternoon, though.
I just sent in my postcard to Dame Perfumery last week and requested BFMV. I was tempted by Dark Horse and a few others but have seen so many positive comments about this scent. Dame has such a general sample program and lots of interesting info on their website,
SOTD is Natori. I really didn’t expect to like this one, it’s so inexpensive but a I am really enjoying it.
Generous sample program… Ugh… Auto correct.
Freschiiissimo again. It is a good thing I really like this scent since my boxes arrive tomorrow at earliest and Friday at latest (theoretically –until things are in my possession I don’t believe them). I was so exhausted that I accidentally packed the money I’m supposed to give the movers upon delivery so my brother had to PayPal me the amount. I can’t wait until everything is nice and settled
I thought of you and your move today. The small house I rent has some “issues” and I suspected a water leak under the slab. Sure enough, this morning water began pooling on the hallway floor, so I spent the day emptying the bedroom & taking things to my storage unit. Will start looking for a new place tomorrow.
Hope your belongings arrive directly and uneventfully.
SOTD = Jo Malone Wild Fig and Cassis
Green, very green anf milky figgy! It wears light on me so I did a nebbe-esque douse (5 sprays). It is mostly gone although I am still catching whiffs of it here and there.
Lol! 5 crazy, no holds barred sprays!
I think douse is a better word than gas so I will use douse going forward as in I douse myself with Chergui … Bvlgari Black and double-douse is reserved for Safran Troublant.
DOUSE!
I always spray some lightly on my clothes. It makes it linger a little longer. Wild Fig is becoming one of my favorites.
For Keep it Simple Tuesday it’s Bas de Soie.
SOTD is Bottega Veneta, the original. Love this one!
You smell great, Floragal.
That one didn’t go over well on me. But, I definitely enjoyed “Knot” by Christine Nagel. Still need to try and get a bottle.
SOTD=DSH’s Oeillettes Rouges…carnations, carnations, a little peppery in the drydown, I love it…
FM day apparently. En Passant for work. Put on Le Parfum de Therese after a shower. Changed to Carnal Flower for late evening.
I’m late to look at this site today…been too busy. I’ve been wearing Panorama since 8:15 a.m. and can still detect it on myself. A nice green scent.
Cold and rainy today, with a winter storm warning for higher elevations. I’m wearing Un Bois Vanille to warm up.
Vintage Vent Vert, and it really captured my mother’s attention, such a treat.
Wearing Sublime Balks which my hubby got for my birthday this past sunday! Love the grapefruit and patchouli!
I had a rough day. Going in search of a Bekkali Songe pour homme sample and if I can’t find it, will spray some santal carmin. And then some chocolate. And then some Twinings decaf chai with a double dose of honey. That oughtta soothe the savage beast.
10,000 degrees in my apartment tonight. Went with Goutal’s Vetiver cologne. It is working some magic! This is a beautiful, bracing vetiver.
