Thursday scent of the day 4/16

Posted by Robin on 16 April 2015 199 Comments

green

It's Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Miller et Bertaux Green, green, green and green. My (old) bottle is slightly turned, boo.

Reminder: tomorrow will be Dealer's Choice: propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I decided to go with vintage Calandre perfume. This (along with Rive Gauche, Miss Dior, Chanel no 19, Aliage and Private Collection) was part of many in my mother’s fragrance collection in the late 70s and she shared all with me. The irony is she wouldn’t be caught dead wearing any of these fragrances now….whereas I would give my right arm for pristine full bottles of any or all of these beauties!

vintage that is (for I know I could get just about all of them in re-formulations)

Oh goodness…don’t get me started! Her favourite phrase is “I want something REFRESHING!” For a while I was buying AG Hadrien and Petite Cherie but when left to her own devices (she won’t make online purchases) she goes for Jo Malone, B&BW and the 1oz edts that they sell at Victoria’s Secret (I think they are called the Garden Collection? Not sure)….meanwhile this was the woman who wore classic chypres, heavy orientals and fougeres and created my perfume obsession back in the 70s! I read somewhere that elderly women don’t want to be percieved as smelling like “an old lady” so they tend to gravitate toward what appears to be more “youthful” scents- go figure!

That’s so funny because my Mom, who used to use to wear Van Cleef & Arpels First and Bal a Versailles now wears some Victoria’s Secret stuff. I’d much rather her wear her beautiful scents she used to wear.

Well, she wore what was new then, she wears what is new now. Makes complete sense! Admittedly not everyone is so agile in keeping up with the times. But curiosity about new things is an admirable quality to have as we age.

Still, I know how you feel. I’d chew off an arm for pristine bottles of some of those lovely greens.

My favorite Calandre memory: My dad died when I was in HS and, memories being too painful for her, after I graduated my mom moved the two of us to a new apartment on the second floor of a Chicago two-flat. Downstairs lived the landlords, an elderly woman and her never-married-didn’t-date bachelor son, Henry, the quintessential Felix Unger. Both he and my mom were in their mid-50’s then, and after not too long, in a rather shy sort of way, it became obvious he liked my mom very much. She was not interested in dating or finding a new partner, however, and he was too much of a ‘fussbudget’ for her anyway (her words, I can still remember them!). One Christmas, he gifted her with Calandre, a very unusual, very un-Henrylike gift, much too avant-garde for my mom’s tastes, which ran to Emeraude/Intimate/Estee. When she died not too many years later, Calandre was one of her fragrances I kept for years but could never wear – too many memories – finally I ‘disposed’ of it (pre-Internet/evilbay/swapping days) along with a few other vintage fragrances I could kick myself for doing. Aargh! But every mention of Calandre always brings to mind Henry, his rather daring gift, and his unrequited infatuation.

I have a sample of Calandre that I received in a swap during the winter. I stashed it away for warmer weather and am excited to give it a go!

I am wearing Aqua Allegoria Lavande Velours which is a very nice slightly spicy lavender with a good dose of iris. Lavande Velours is one of the discontinued ones I wish they woud bring back (along with Flora Nerolia, Winter Delice, Anisia Bella, and Gentiana). I was going to wear my favorite, Flora Nerolia, but I have meetings today and it is a tad too indolic for the conference room.

Ambre Précieux was my go-to amber for more than fifteen years but then I got tired of it (and actually of almost all ambers except SL Ambre Sultan) because I am horribly fickle. AP is pretty great, though.

But I thought I would love it forever! I fell so hard and so fast, and it was my first ever niche scent, that when I found I didn’t care for it any more I felt awful: I didn’t know if I had betrayed it or it had betrayed me. I’ve discarded many many scents over the years but I never thought I would get tired of AP.

Maybe it’s MPG’s interpretation of it but the genre; I mean I love amber but in a way it’s a more monotonous fragrance family than florals or chypres are.
The only fragrance that I’ve been wearing for over 25 years now is Paris, and every time I put it on I feel great.

Having a very disappointing perfume day. I wore Guerlain’s Vetiver, which I have tested before and loved, and found to have decent longevity. I put on just one spritz as I had a big important meeting first thing and did not want to be overbearing with my scent. And it completely disappeared a mere 2 hours after spraying. And I don’t have an emergency perfume stash with me! Bummer.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been some flops, but there are lots of things I never would have found or tried on my own that have been a hit or just a lot of fun. Apparently Oud Shamash is made with natural oud – I wonder if that is affecting my opinion of whether or not I really like oud.

Day four of Mystery Caron week and today it’s Tabac Blond extrait: no idea of the vintage but that hardly matters because although it starts out with a fair quantity of carnation, it goes iris-heavy and that’s never going to work for me. No discernible tobacco, either, which I would have thought would be the point. Kind of powdery-makeuppy and not my thing at all. (I bet it would be terrific on the right person, mind you.)

Yesterday I wore Ivoire de Balmain from a tester I purchased blindly from Overstock several years ago. It has the name printed in black on the bottle and I believe it is the EDP. It is a gorgeous Chypre and I get so mant compliments when I wear these old school gems! I think I lucked out and got an older tester with jasmine and soap present but no raspberry! I really have no desire to try the new iteration since I find myself perfectly happy with the one I have!

Ivoire is indeed a gorgeous chypre…I have a decant of vintage and should really wear it some time soon….and since you brought up Overstock (I wasn’t going to mention it, lest I create more spending than necessary….but here it goes!) I was perusing the site yesterday and noticed some lovelies that have been getting mentioned or desired lately on NST…..Calandre edt, DK Gold. TF Violet Blonde, Ivoire….I could go on and on and the prices looked good…..

As my seemingly relentless need for more roses continues, I’m moving towards springy/summery ones, and Mogador by Keiko Mecheri is delighting me with its bright and fresh pinkness right now. Who knew I liked straight up pretty? Not me. But I do, as it turns out. Huffing my arm now.

In a spirit of self-martyrdom (or something) I am retrying Oriza Chypre Mousse, which was SUCH a disaster the first time I tested it I had to scrub. Gave it an hour, but it just kept getting worse. I mean, the word “horrid” kept entering my head.

On the off-chance that it was reacting badly to something on my skin I didn’t know was there, I’m trying again. I’m only at T plus 8 minutes, T being application time, so we’ll see.

Big fat no for me. You are very brave to test it again. I didn’t scrub it, but my goodness I hated it. All I could think of was Swedish Bitters tonic, mushroom-infused creek water and a barbershop circa 1900 something where the presiding “doctor” from a traveling medicine show sold weird concoctions like Rattle Snake Oil and Dr. Bonker’s Celebrated Egyptian Oil.

It definitely has a tomb/decay/crypt kind of thing going on. If you can get past that, it can be really nice. (In a bitters and snake-oil kind of way–Holly, you made me LOL with that description.)

I tried a bunch of the Oriza Legrand scents in December and Chypre Mousse was the only one I liked, and I’m not a fan of green or chypres usually. It struck me as light and fluffy and I didn’t mind the dank mushroomy smell; I liked Aftelier Cepes and Tuberose too. Heliotrope Blanc was almondy baby powder on me. So interesting how tastes intersect or diverge!

Yeah, I didn’t make it this long. Had to scrub again. Swamp +mildew+greasy labdanum, I just cannot even. Just can’t.

And this is from someone who really loves the old Coty Chypre (oh, and hey, if you’re wondering, Hiram Green Shangri La is definitely not a recreation of Coty Chypre if you ask me, but it’s pretty terrific all the same). This is All The Things I Hate About Early Duchaufours, Plus Axle Grease and Burnt Hydraulic Fluid. I did not care for it either, Mals. I usually don’t give samples a second chance, which is a mistake, really. NST commenters have been raving about Fille de Berlin recently, so I decided to try that again last night. Not that I actively disliked it the first time, it just didn’t smell like something I needed. Last night, it smelled very different from what I remembered. I plan to try it a third time. It will interesting to see how it smells.

I find that occasionally the first time I try something, I smell individual pieces, like a kaleidoscope, and the next time I try it, the shards reassemble into a shape. L’AP Traversee du Bosphore was like that, for example. LT describes sensing Guerlain Nahema similarly.

I’ll be interested in your retake on Chypre Mousse.

THe short version of the retake is: still awful. On me, I suppose, because I am not getting much moss (much less any joy) out of this the way a lot of people do. It’s very very dank and mushroomy and old-basement, and the quality of the labdanum in it is very oily, almost rancid. I’m to the point of wondering out loud, “Somebody thinks this smells like fragrance? WRONG.”

(I have a love-hate thing going on with mildew in old basements, fwiw. I find it sort of enchanting in really old buildings… memorably, it was really cool to go down under the 12th century church in Rome to find a 3rd century church, and to go down to the level below that, which was a commercial street with a tannery and a small schoolroom in approximately 4th century BC. Really cool to smell that dank basement smell there. Do I want to wear it out of a bottle on my wrist now? NO. NO, I don’t. But it was the basement/toad smell mashed up with the rancid labdanum that really killed me.)

Mals, you’re right, mildew and dankness are great in their proper place, i.e., the lower levels of fascinating, ancient stone structures, not wafting from one’s skin. I do remember it smelling vile enough to justify the rest of your description. ;-) THANK YOU for retrying this one so that others don’t have to – it is a public service and you have earned your Chamade today!

It’s interesting that it smells good to some people. I was discussing scent with someone on another blog today who said that she couldn’t smell skunk at all until she was in her 20s. Noses are really different.

Heading to Boston on the 27th and will have a little time to go sniffing that Monday afternoon and the next two evenings. I will be staying near enough to Copley Square and planning to go to NM and probably Barney’s, maybe Chanel and Hermes. Was googling and wondering if it would be worth going out to Newton to Colonial Drug. Any Bostonians that can comment (Goddess Rena?)?? I was really hoping to get a good sniff of the DelRae scents at Barney’s, but it looks like they no longer carry them and the DelRae customer service phone number isn’t working.

Not currently in Boston (I move back next month probably) but Colonial Drug was a little peculiar when it was in Harvard Sq. You had to ask for things to sniff, no easy access to testers and I sometimes felt like the guy gave the impression that I was inconveniencing him by having him do his job. If you’re leaving the Back Bay area you’re better off going down to Louis (on the waterfront) since they usually have some niche stuff

Nope. He did the Chicago one in the fall and is signed up for the Marine Corps marathon in D.C., whenever that is. You have a great memory! We were in D.C. for spring break with our boys and I itched to do some sniffing, but the trip wasn’t about me. Good thing Ari’s shop isn’t open yet (I don’t think–please update, Ari!) or I would have really had some major angst going on. Will have to look up Louis. Is it near the Convention Center? That is where the continuing ed conference I’m going to Boston for will be. Hopefully I will have a decent lunch hour, though I don’t want to come back too fragrant, for fear of irritating anyone sitting near me.

Well, I live very close to Newton (Nonantum), the new location for Colonial Drug. Not sure it is worth the trek for you. The sister of the peculiar guy is usually there and she is quite normal. They share a space with a knife merchant. I’ve been in there a couple of times, and was not really very inspired. Maybe it was carryover from previous experience in Harvard Square but I just did not feel welcomed in the shop. Nobody came over to help me, which was odd because I was the only one in there. In any case, it’s better to stick to the Copley/Pru shops. They have a lot of things at Barneys and Saks (the SA for Jo Malone at Saks – tall older guy with white hair – is great to talk to about perfume and is generous with samples. I also had a lovely experience with the Diptique/Bond/Ford SA at Saks. There is a Chanel store in the area as well (not sure exactly where it is, but it’s within walking distance of Coply. There’s also a Marshalls and a Nordie Rack on Boylston Street, both of which sometimes have some good perfumes at a discount.

If I wear Eau Premiere for 2 or 3 days in a row, I start to become asnomic to it…strange. If I’ve forgotten about it for awhile, it’s quite long-lived.

WOW, that’s a whole lot of scent going on! I remember Olene as being quite strong, I bet it’s beating up the Jo Malones! Would love to try Cafe Rose myself.

Yeah,I ever so slightly overdid it on my skin today….lol! It all became somewhat muddled in the drydown, which was to be expected of course! But the clear winner regarding staying power/sillage is the Armani Rose D’Arabie.Really nice, spicy rose. But very close to Clinique Beyond Rose which I already have!

Nothing for me as yet. I’ve got a miserable headcold/bronchitis/flu/ pinkeye. Ugh! The pinkeye showed up yesterday . Was working sick Monday and Tuesday when I just had cough and low grade temp, and was wearing Victoria Secret Dream Angels Wish ( I think it’s Wish either that or Halo? I was being ironic as I work for LB)both days couldn’t smell it for the most part though I did get complimented on smelling good. I’m going to root through my shower gels and lotions an see if I can find something smell able . If not I may just clean up and douse myself in Tabu or Opium or something.

TF Shanghai Lily. I put it on about 90 minutes ago and can barely smell it. Guess I’ll go put on some more.

As a perfume-related aside, I’m reading Candice Bergen’s second memoir, A Fine Romance. She briefly touches on some of her endorsement deals and mentions Cie perfume. She says, “I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t a fan of the scent. They had to put a rider in my contract that I was no longer allowed to refer to the perfume as “Lysol.”

Sampling Anisia Bella. Somehow I missed the memo about how aquatic this thing is. Another that’s not for me. They say longevity is weak, so there should be more me-type time later.

I spent last night in My Sin. Now that was good, though maybe not quite as good as it sounds, now that I reread the sentence.

There should be prizes for perfume names that function like “in bed” at the end of a fortune cookie fortune. Maybe my dealer’s choice will be Double Entendre, in which case I can wear My Sin on my sleeve tomorrow.

Wearing the new Slumberhouse Kiste for the second day and this gorgeous stuff just gets more beautiful every hour. Stunningly comfy, I’d swear I’m sitting on a porch in Savannah with a freshly baked peach bourbon pie cooling all around me, in fact I must have dived into one and smeared it all over me – which believe me, I could do!

But don’t get the wrong idea, this is NOT sweet, it is just the finest peach, booze, tea, tobacco ever found on this earth all dancing with each other in the best cotillion way. My first frag love of the new year and I know it is going to be a long lovely relationship.

I haven’t liked the other Slumberhouse frags I’ve tried and so was a little dubious of this one, till I read so many good things about it from blogs whose nose I respect. They don’t usually lead me astray and proved once again, the ‘nose’ ‘knows’ :)

After clients I decided to put on Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt. I got about a gerzillion samples of it from the lovely tall dude manning the JM counter at Saks on Monday. It’s a sunny, chilly day here (well chilly for a little cotton sweater which is what I wore to work this morning). Um, not really impressed with WS and SS. It is pretty, but too much of a skin scent, even for me.

Lately I have been wearing Burberry Brit Rhythm to bed and it has totally taken over my pajamas. It’s such a lovely poem of lavender and violets for chilly early spring. I’m loving it’s fresh woodiness. So I ordered a 50ml bottle from a discounter the other day.

Honestly I am plenty tempted by all the perfume deals to be had on line right now, but also fearful that I already have too much that may go bad before I even start using it! Anyone else have this angsty relationship with perfume?

Always! maybe if you made a rule such as “no new full bottle until I drain 2-3″…..I have done that in the past and it seems to work!
I like the WS & SS on my hubby…the only fragrance he lets me apply on him…but it needs to be far away from his nose (Ie; not on the neck).

That is very good advice! At the rate I use perfume, it will take awhile to use up even an inch. I like the idea of making an agreement to not buy any new bottles until I use some of what I have. There are thousands of great perfumes out there and I can’t have them all……or can I?

So glad you are enjoying Rhythm. I wore it to bed last night too and could smell it on my bathrobe this morning.

Just after a fragrance purchase I feel at peace. Then that thought starts to creep in…that irrational though that I need more fragrances in my life! I can only fight it so long. ;-)

Haha! What is that? If I REALLY think about all the bottles I already have, it’s plenty for this lifetime and the next. I have a little tray on my dresser that is loaded with decants and minis. I feel like I need to use those up before I even get to the bottles which are all stored in the dark. I think it’s time for a paradigm shift from left brain logic and scarcity mentality to ? I know that perfume is about something else, but I haven’t yet found the pleasure balance yet – I’m envious of some of the people here who talk about finding a perfume in their collection that matches their mood etc. and that they actually use up all of the perfume in a bottle. That hasn’t happened to me yet. I guess I’m still pretty new.

SOTD is PanAme de Patou, a tart fruity floral evocative of springtime in Paris with its violet leaf and linden blossom notes, also, pear and peach, sandalwood, oakmoss and musk. Tonight’s classic film series features the definitive 1935 version of Les Miserables with Frederic March, so i’m in the mood for all things French today!

Finally, a worthwhile beauty tip in the New York Times Skin Deep section, from this article by Bee Shapiro, “Want That ‘Game of Thrones’ Glow? Beauty Tips From Natalie Dormer”:

“My signature scent is the old Gucci by Gucci before they reimagined it. I was really upset when they discontinued it. But my sister’s boyfriend is in the navy, and he managed to find, like, six bottles on the U.S. base in Bahrain. He sent me a text, and I told him to buy all of them. He’s a British naval officer, and there he is at the U.S. station and buying up all the Gucci bottles. I’ve got maybe two years’ worth of it now.”

There you go, everyone with access to a PX (or who knows someone who does), check out the old stock!

That was my first thought too, but if she isn’t wearing anything else it might not be so extreme. I’ve probably used up 300ml of perfume a year, it’s just that it’s spread over 60 bottles and a bazillion decants and samples so I never use anything UP.
