Wednesday scent of the day 4/1

Posted by Robin on 1 April 2015 154 Comments

1 Avril

April Fools! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing Dude d'Oud by Cowabunga Oud. (Well, I'd wear it if I had some, really! But I'm settling for a dab of Chanel Misia.)

Reminder: this Friday, 3 April, is Chanel TNG: wear something by perfumer Olivier Polge. If you don't have anything by Olivier Polge, do feel free to wear an older Chanel fragrance, or skip it altogether.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

On Monday I packed up some smellies and held a little “Show and Smell” at work about my obsession with perfume. I think I might even have inspired some purchases. The most popular ones seemed to be: Rochas Man (the clear winner!), Premier Figuer, Tea for two, Wonderwood, Midnight in Paris, Divin’ Enfant and my scent for today Bendelirious. There’s a very sophisticated, classic perfume here, but it just can’t quite get past that irreverent, cheery cherry lollipop note. I love it, and breathing it in makes me happy!

Another Bendelirious fan here! I have made quite a dent in my decant. It’s sweet and chipper but offbeat enough to be interesting.

Yay! Isn’t it great when your coworkers and friends are interested? Just now my coworker/friend came over to ask me some questions. Such a pleasure to be able to share what you enjoy.

They were really enthusiastic – there were moments when I couldn’t get a word in edgeways! I’d intended it to be about 30, 45mins max. An hour and a half later we were still at it! Much better than work though. And there may be a couple of budding perfumistas amongst them. I of course consider it my duty to help them along…

I think a lot of people would be interested to know there is more out there, esp. if they could sniff it right away. I’ve often though it would be fun to open my own “osmotheque” at my library and let people smell and learn, and then charge $1 for a good squirt to wear away. I’m not sure the board would approve…. 😉 But it’s really cool that you shared with your co-workers.

I love this idea! Good for you!
I’ve found those that are not into perfume as we are, are simply amazed at creations like Tea for Two or Premier Figuer..
They’re only used to department store scents.

      I should try this too!

This has to be one of the funniest and cleverest ideas I’ve read!
I might just do this with some friends, who all individually have commented on my perfume obsession, and have a tea. Thank you for the brilliant idea!

Love that. I did a show and smell with an old friend who professed to not being much of a perfume person… Her favorites? Lipstick Rose, Timbuktu, and Mohur….. She lives in New York so I made her a map of the niche perfume shops (included Bergdorfs)…. It was a lark!

That’s brilliant, Bob! And it’s really a public service to enlighten people’s eyes to real perfume!

I did something a little bit like this. I wanted to give a friend perfume for her wedding. I asked about her preferences and then loaned her eight of my perfumes two months ahead of the wedding to test at her leisure. It was an early December wedding, and her first choice was BK Liaisons Dangereuses. I gave her a travel set of that and also one of my back-up bottles of her second choice, vintage Caron Parfum Sacre. I think we both had fun with this experiment.

Scent twins–when I first tried Misia, I enjoyed the first hour, but the drydown was a solo persistent violet. Giving it another go.

I’m happy to have my hands on a big sample of Misia, and sad to say it’s going to be a pass for me. My wallet is happy, my Chanel loving heart is sad. Overall it’s a nice composition. I can see it being very popular, easy to wear, etc etc. After smelling Misia, I realize that prominent violet is not really my thing, and kind of goes to sugary plastic. Bummer. For me, the violet note in Misia became so powerful and almost fluorescent APPLE smelling. It was a bit overpowering and blocked all the iris and rose. I think the drydown is nice, but not for the cost. It smells like L’AP’s Traversee du Bosphore and AG’s Violette had a little pink baby baby together. I’ve never smelled lipstick rose so I have no comparison there.

interesting you got fluorescent apple! But we share the OD on violet experience–it completely overpowered the rose & iris on me. Best for my wallet (and overstuffed perfume cabinet), though.

I’m not sure what I’m missing. I sprayed Misia liberally this morning (as liberally as I could from a sample vile). It was really pretty for the first 10 minutes or so, and then poof…gone. Can’t smell a thing!

It could be a musk blocking issue? That happens to me sometimes and it makes fragrances get “wavy” or totally disappear for me. It could also be for my nose why I can’t smell any of the rose or iris and only the violet. More money for something else!

Also, ionones are notorious for exhausting the nose’s ability to smell them. You might try a smaller dose. I’m finding it strong enough to dab.

I love Sahara Noir, and tend to wear it most often in the winter because it lingers so nicely on wool sweaters and scarfs. I wear it on its own, but also like to use it to emphasize the the incense notes in other fragrances. SN also smells good layered with a rose perfume.

I was at a friend’s house one night, and another friend there decided he wanted to light a pillar candles. He couldn’t find a long match to reach the wick, so he lit a paper tissue instead. The flame of course shot up, so he dropped it onto the sauce the candle was on, then picked up the whole assembly and ran into the kitchen, alternating blowing on it and shouting, “Dude! Dude! Dude!” (He also happens to have two master’s degrees in engineering, so theoretically he should know how fire works.) So today for a brief moment, I thought I’d found a perfect scent for him.

I thought about going to Lush or Arabian Oud but then I remembered that I had been meaning to look for the new Mugler, A*Men Ultra Zest. I found it at the House of Fraser on Oxford Street, tried it, and bought it. Both are safe for work. The True Vanilla smells amazing on my 18 year old neighbor. It’s a twist on Shalimar with vanilla and bergamot.

Truth be told, Bal in PdT is rarer than hen’s teeth and it’s expensive when you can find it. But I managed to score a few bottles in the past two months. The EDC seems to be the most reasonably priced.

I have a 4 oz vintage edc of splash and it is almost as powerful as the edt I got in 2005. They both smell nearly identical! I can only imagine what vintage extrait or the pdt smell like.

ELDO is developing a solid perfume around a sardine note. The top of the tin rolls back with a key. Rumour has it that the perfume will be named Poisson Ubiquitous (or PU for short)

The image Robin posted at the top is an early prototype for the packaging label, and it does look like there will be a lilac top note. The ad campagne will feature several sardines with lilacs tied to their backs swimming around in a heart shaped bowl while an old guy with a cracker spread with mustard tries to capture them.

Today, following the strong review on Bois de Jasmine, I’m wearing Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her. I’ve worn it a few times now, and it’s been growing on me for another easy everyday scent that’s not too generic or ‘pretty’ . Though to launch it under the ad campaign it got does feel like an April Fool’s joke.

I tried to get my twin boys (not at all identical) to dress up as each other for play school today – trade lunch bags, coats, shoes, glasses, etc – and one was totally keen, while the other got very upset about it all. So we didn’t end up playing any tricks. They had a hard time understanding the difference between telling a joke and playing a trick. Not so easy to explain….

My favorite author for my preschool aged boys was Robert Munsch. My boys LOVED his stories… Thin paperbacks that travel well full of fun pictures… Anyway, your story reminded me of his book “We Share Everything.” Other favorites are Murmel, Murmel; Paperbag Princess;” I of course read and cried reading “Love you Forever,” but that one is really a salve to mums of boys… My boys just thought it was funny that I couldn’t read it without tearing up!

My husband first read that in the book store, standing there with tears streaming down his cheeks. As my son got older I would have to have him read it as soon as I started crying.

I think that would be hysterical – especially because they are not identical! One day they’ll understand how funny that would be…probably in just a couple years!

I like BBR as an everyday scent as well. Will have to check out the review you on BdJ.

Another twin mom here, with very non-identical girls. That would be hilarious, but a concept that might not make sense to them yet.
Just read the review and realized I have never sniffed Rhythm – was getting it confused with the Beat. I’ll have to try the next time I’m at Sephora.

One of my college room mates dated a guy from west point. The only reason to go there is to get a high paying corporate job after your first “out” offer, I think, 5 years? Apparently corporate american puts a high price on people they don’t think will be corrupt, so that’s a good thing. Usually they protect the officers, but things can get kind of nutty anyway. It pays to do your research about what kind of time they must serve when they are done. This friend’s SO had to go to Somalia back in the day for a short tour. A military decision is not taken lightly, right?

SOTD= Oriza L. Legrand Miguet Fleuri. This is definitely my favorite LOTV fragrance at the moment, (after Diorissimo, of course) because this lasts for hours, alternating between a sort of sharp bright LOTV, and a sweeter, softer LOTV +other sorts of blossoms for a while, back and forth. Right now we are in a sweeter softer phase, at 8+ hours! Wonderful…

I just grabbed the first thing that seemed wearable – another late night with an upset child. Not sick any more, so not sure what it was all about, but she did NOT want to go back to sleep.

Three sprays of Rose Anonyme this morning and now I’m enjoying the deep and musky dried red roses and oud dry down. This perfume is beautiful.

A package just arrived from STC with a bunch of different Shalimar/flanker samples in there that I will be sending to my cousin in law who we stayed with in Florida. I also threw in a sample of Wit for her to try. I hope she finds something she likes.

LOL, it didn’t occur to me to find an April Fools perfume – great choice, Robin! I think I’d put ELdO Jasmin et Cigarette in that category, but I can never wear it for very long.

My mini of Chanel Misia arrived, so that’s what I’m wearing. It’s nice but smells more like a Prada than a Chanel to me, i.e., more artificial powdery musk. I’ll find occasions to wear it, but a mini is the right amount for me. It makes me long for more soulful roses, like YSL Rive Gauche.

To paraphrase Deva’s lovely sentiment, I had a day filled with much ‘beauty and joy to be had.’ The weather was glorious, sunshiney and warm, perfect for a springtime jaunt. At a noontime piano/violin concert, I alternated between being transfixed by the pianist’s nimble fingers and mesmerized by the view of the park directly across the street, where birds periodically fluttered and soared, engaged in their own ‘flights of fancy,’ the theme of the first piece. Was their winged harmony my imagination, or was it their response to the music they could ‘hear’ through the large expanse of glass that separated us? I don’t know, but it was delightful! Lunch with good friends, and a walk through Macy’s Flower Show (I inhaled and never wanted to exhale!), completed the afternoon. The scent that accompanied me was Guerlain’s long d/c Meteorites, almost, but, not quite a violet soliflore – iris and heliotrope are there, too, and a bit of green, but mostly it is soft, powdery violet. My favorite ‘makeup’ scent, ladylike, almost genteel, which is just what I wanted to be today.
