Monday scent of the day 2/23

Posted by Robin on 23 February 2015 160 Comments

Carla Bruni for Bvlgari

Yep, it's another Monday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Bvlgari Omnia.

Reminder: this Friday, 2/27, is Spicy Friday. How spicy can you go?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I really want to try Omina, but I don’t want to get attached to yet ANOTHER discontinued perfume ;). Bet you smell great though.

SOTD is JCrew no 57. Happy with my choice – made quickly because I was running late … as usual. And my room is really messy. I need to overhaul my perfume organization. Does anyone have a system to store perfume bottles that they love??

Unfortunately, my loved bottles always end up at the very back of my collection (housed in a couple of tall bookcases)as I don’t want them to risk falling to the ground. Also, I don’t want those bottles to be emptied too quickly, so i don’t reach for them too often. Crazy! I keep wearing the meh! to save the favorites!

Yay Omnia! I just discovered this one not too long ago and it’s such a wonderful, versatile scent- Great for everyday, unobtrusive but subliminally present.

Even though it’s discontinued, it’s easy to find at online discounters for cheap cheap cheap! I think I got a 1.7oz bottle for about $40 and no regrets, totally worth a sniff.

Echoing Deva’s comments, it’s easy to find online for cheap, easy to add a couple backup bottles. Just sayin’ . . . 🙂

I keep all my bottles standing up in the top drawer of my chest. If anyone walked into my room, they’d never know I am a serial fragrance collector. Thankfully, the drawer is big so almost all my bottles fit, but the very tallest (Kenzo, Guerlain specials). It’s a good way for me to see them easily from the top (grouped by house) and to keep them at hand and out of the light. My decants are also standing up in another different chest with tiny labels on top their caps w/ abbreviated names so I can find them easily. Samples are all stored in small decorative boxes in another drawer. I keep my horde of backups in a box in the bottom of one of my closets that stays very cool. Good luck!

Oh man, anyone who walked into my room right now would know I had a problem 😉 Keeping them in a drawer is a good idea, and it would be a lot easier to implement than getting a shallow cabinet and mounting it on the wall (hard to find and lots of effort)!

You’d also have to worry about weight if you mounted a cabinet on the wall. It’s easier to control the weight distribution with a chest or dresser drawer. This dresser I use is pretty robust, otherwise, I think the combined weight of about 200-300 ounces, plus glass, would crush the whole deal!

I agree it’s completely worth it to seek out Omnia. It’s like no other in my collection and I always enjoy it.

I also worry about bottles falling, especially living on an earthquake fault line. I keep my fragrances stored inside a dresser drawer in fabric covered boxes, a little more narrow than a show box. Each morning I open my perfume draw and pick out a fragrance. It’s not as fun as looking at the beautiful and interesting shaped bottles (hello Omnia), but it’s worth the peace of mind.

I also keep most of my perfumes in dresser drawers, but can’t resist placing a rotating few on a glass tray atop the dresser. I know the light exposure is not good but they are so beautiful!

Yeah, some bottles are too pretty to hide. At least if it is one that you use all the time, you don’t have to worry about it going bad!

    Wearing CdG Jaisalmer today.
Last night I sampled No.19 Edp as opposed to EdT. It was interesting to see the development of both, but in the end, I think I will have to go with the EdT-even if it doesn’t stay very long on me. The EdP ends with too much vetiver for my liking.
    Have a great week everyone!

Did you say vetiver?!? 😉 One of the things I like best about the No 19 edt is that I get to enjoy re-applying over and over all day along. There is nothing like that galbanum-iris opening!!! One of the benefits of a frag that doesn’t last a very long time!

I think I notice less vetiver in the EdP than I do in the EdT (well, the vintage stuff anyway). Hmm, but maybe that’s the leather note in the vintage popping up to smooth some of the vetiver down… dunno.

Right. And it’s definitely 19, how bad could it be?

    • Schneeze says:
      23 February 2015 at 1:38 pm

No 19 has very poor longevity on me in both EdT and EdP. Perhaps it has to do with the cold winter weather but atm but both last roughly 20-30 minutes before going bzzt. Last time I was at a dept store I sprayed the EdP five times on my scarf, then came back an hour later for another five shots . . . and yet it was barely there.

The vintage mini of the EdT is a sharp vegetal leather and lasts 3-4 hours max, very close to the skin, if I use unscented baby oil to fixate it.

I have a small decant of Noir Epices that I treasure. I’d love to get a bottle, but then I don’t think I need that much! I’m saving mine for the Friday challenge. I think it is one of the “warmest” fragrances I own.

I definitely want more of this but not a big bottle. It is potent stuff.
It is very warming, perhaps even more so than his Bois de Paradis.
I haven’t made up my mind yet about Friday. I’ve got several options…

How is everyone getting a hold of the new Jo Malones? I am interested in trying 4/5 (since I already own Pomegranate Noire). How are you liking/not liking the Lily of the Valley & Ivy? I wanted to try this one in hopes that it will smell like my beloved but discontinued AG Eau de Camille (with ivy and seringa) but thanks to AnnS I found EdC online along with Folavril….hmmm…maybe two bottles as an early birthday present to myself?

I was at Nordstrom Sunday with my mom and we got to chatting with the Jo Malone rep. They were just getting the new releases set out, and she invited us to try them.

Really enjoying this one, it’s light and warm and green and rounded. Not sharp at all.

I got a sample last month. I notice that the Chanel counter has a tray behind the counter where they keep most fragrances, and then they put what they want to promote up front (at least at the stores near me). Don’t know why No 5 Eau Premiere wouldn’t be there though … It’s a good one! You smell great today 🙂

Just got a sample of this one from the dept store which claimed to not have any samples of anything….I came prepared with empty sample vials and filled up on various Chanels, Guerlains and Estee Lauders….I noticed that Estee Lauder keeps their older fragrances hidden behind the display as well….so while the SA was busy helping another customer I grabbed the Aliage bottle and filled up my vial without her even knowing….if your dept store doesn’t carry no 5 Eau Premiere you can always get it at Sephora.

When I got lucky and made it to Macys by myself the other week, I noticed that ALL of the fragrances in the entire cosmetics/frag area where behind the counter. It’s very frustrating b/c you have to speak to someone – I guess that’s why they do it aside from shoplifting issues. I am perturbed with our Macy’s b/c they still have on display under the counter ONE Sensual Elixir and ONE of the old original Eau Premiere bottles. RRRRrrrr!! I’ve tried to be so charming to get them to sell them to me!!! But no doing.

And yet people in big shops still try to spray me from top to bottom with the stuff I do not want to smell at all. Just because it is new… In my world Eau Premiere was created only yesterday… I just cannot get on top of this speed of current marketing strategies.

Right. I was in Macy’s in the mall in San Antonio two weeks ago, and EVERY SINGLE TESTER was hidden away. Even the Lauders. Even the Elizabeth Ardens. I finally said, “forget this” and walked out.

Almost every dept. store in SA does that and they are horrified if you actually want to spray yourself with a tester. They MAY dispense a tiny squirt if they approve but you’ll never hold the bottle in your hands. I lived and worked less than five minutes from North Star for years and within walking distance of La Cantera prior to that and have always ordered samples on line rather than deal with the security measures at the malls. In you go back, Saks actually has their testers out but the service is hit or miss. There is a nice older lady who will let one shop in peace and gives out samples if asked and a younger female vulture who I can NOT stand who has been there forever and is incredibly pushy and rude.

I have scent eating skin, and tend to not project very far, no matter what I spray, but one solid spritz on my wrist of this and my coworker – who loves my perfumes – said “WHOA! That is strong.” I was all the way across the room. I went and rinsed it off a bit and it’s more tame now, but that’s a concern for me. I don’t want my scent to project quite that intensely that far away from me. Subtlety is more my jam. Anyone else experience this?

OJ Woman has a very big base. It is a gorgeous fragrance, but there is a lot there. The base is also very tenacious. I used to want a bottle of this as I have two of the regular store samples. I’ve been milking them for about 4 years!! Seriously, when I want to wear Woman, I use one tiny squirt from a sample and kind of gently dab it around. That is more than enough for me for an entire day. A full on spray from the regular bottle would send me to Mars! Try and just put on a tiny bit and you may have more luck. Also, if you really like it, then you might consider the creams OJ sells, which are outstanding. It may provide more control. FYI – I also have a fb of Ta’if, and it needs similar control when applying. OJ scents are very rich!

Ta’if has been my favorite of this line, though I didn’t have to be quite so cautious about spraying. This one is also nice, though hasn’t grabbed me as Ta’if did. None of the florals have really captured my attention either, but I don’t tend to be a floral person. Also as I got the set in October, maybe the weather just hasn’t been appropriate for them.

          GUESS WHAT FINALLY ARRIVED.

I don’t notice a huge sillage on myself. I normally do about 2 sprays from a decant. No one has ever commented about it from a distance of more than 2 inches away. (And if anyone is that close, they can just deal with the perfume…)

I did smell it once when a guest walked into my house. But it was not a bad thing at all–it projected maybe 6-12 inches from her, nothing unreasonable.

I love Woman, but it is very quiet on me. Especially after the top notes go. I have to put my nose almost on my skin to smell it, and thats with several sprays from a full bottle. Also, I’v asked others and they can also only smell it on me with their noses right up to my skin!

I am POLLUTED with flu viruses and have almost no sense of smell, so I figured, okay, even I would have to be able to smell Clinique Wrappings, which can pretty much blow a hole through spacetime. Nope! Just a vague chypre background for maybe ten minutes and then nothing. If I can’t even smell all those nuclear aldehydes you know I’m pretty far gone.

Today I grabbed randomly from the sample pile and ended up with Vamp. It’s going to get scrubbed off shortly. At first it was giving me a headache, but now it just smells like scented disinfectant for a bargain or something. Ah well, I wrist what I’ll get next try!

In this case, there is probably no connection, it’s called Vamp and it’s by Alkemia Perfumes. I just couldn’t remember the house earlier today. It smells like a heavy amber with a medicinal lemon edge. I reckon a lot of people might like it but heavy ambers suffocate me. I’ve yet to try Vamp a NY!

You should try it! It has more orange at the top then the original but is a great example of the style with lots of stewed fruit notes(I reference my Mom’s stewed fruit which she made with lots of butter and curry)and a cedar backbone.

Today’s SOTD is L’Artisan Poivre Piquant. I like it, but now that I’m out in the world (instead of sampling at home on my sofa), I’m not sure it’s complicated enough. At the moment, it reminds me of Passage D’Enfer, which I already own. Still, the pepper’s great, though I think I’d like a little more sweetness today.

The three L’Artisan Epices scents are pretty stripped down, for sure: I fell in love with the red-pepper one first, then thought it was too simple so I went for the white-pepper one and started feeling the same about that, and finally decided I liked the saffron one enough to buy a full bottle.

My skin is eating scent this time of year since it’s so cold and dry out. But two sprays this morning and Angel is still chugging along nicely. Maybe that’s also why I chose it, if anything can latch on and remind me I actually did spray myself, it’s Angel.

Feeling disconcerted by SODRIK (smell of dead rat in kitchen discussed in earlier posts) I just wanted to wear something strong and familiar–I have a deadline for work so am stuck in my home office, rooms away from the kitchen–but not the idea of SODRIK, which is all pervasive… so drained a mini of Anais Anais I bought on eBay a while back. I bought it for nostalgia. My first roommate in college wore it all the time. But perhaps it has been reformulated, or my cheap mini is not authentic… but the fragrance reminds me of nothing… just vaguely floral. I’ll need to re-up with something more soul-singing in a little bit.

Brrr! Single digit temps here today, but the sun shining brightly keeps alive the sensory memory of yesterday’s orchid show. SOTD for Keep-It-Simple Monday is YR Vanille Bourbon, a ‘simple’ but very pleasant Madagascar vanilla. I smell like the pure vanilla extract I purchased there yesterday. 🙂

Always an unapologetic vanilla lover, I was fascinated by all I learned from the vanilla exhibit at the show. I didn’t know that the ‘plain’ and ‘simple’ vanilla is not as bland as one might think, as the product of the orchid genus Vanilla, V. plantifolia actually contains 25 different scent components. My favorite cold-weather note has a greater degree of sophistication than I knew!

High five from another die hard vanilla fan! I wonder why vanilla has such a huge fan group? I always think in evolutionary terms why would specific things have such a compelling draw to large numbers in any given population? Why does the scent molecule seem to fit so many receptors in a mass of people who have no evolutionary history with the scent?

I love unsolvable mysteries like that, but then I’m a dork 😀

I was disappointed to discover that I am not a huge fan of vanilla in fragrances (with some notable exceptions a la Shalimar, etc.) because I LOVED that bit in Crossing Delancey when Amy Iriving’s character starts to figure out there is more to her pickle man than meets the eye…she notices he smell nice and he explains that he washes his hands with vanilla every day after working in his shop.
