Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 13 February 2015 18 Comments

Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or

West Village niche perfume boutique Aedes de Venustas will launch Palissandre d’Or, a new unisex fragrance developed by perfumer Alberto Morillas.

Palissandre d’Or sheds a new light on the immemorial scent of precious Oriental woods, in a smoldering palette of burnt sienna, lacquered red and molten gold.

The idea for the house’s fifth offering was sparked off by the Indian rosewood tree also known as Dalbergia sissoo, which has historically been the primary rosewood species of northern India. Rather than a specific essence, it was the word “palisander”, redolent of intricate Oriental carvings and serene Asian groves, which provided the inspiration. “I can’t make overly figurative fragrances”, Alberto Morillas explains. “To me, a perfume is a melody.” With Palissandre d’Or, he draws mesmerizing music from this imaginary wood…

[...] In this dazzling olfactory marquetry, crystal-clear ambrette – a natural musk with rose, pear and iris facets – brightens rich inlays of cool spices: pink pepper, coriander and nutmeg. Then, as the torrid heat of cinnamon rises, the scent opens up its heart to deliver its secret: a rare sandalwood extract from Sri Lanka. Subtly smoky, rose-tinged and creamy, it is made more luscious still by the milky warmth of copahu balm and a silken patchouli extract.

A bold trio of cedar essences add structure and texture to the lustrous blend. Clean, bracing Virginian cedar gives it vigor and tempo. The Lapsang Souchong tea facet of Chinese cedar and the Russian leather smokiness of Alaskan cedar – another rare new extract showcased by Alberto Morillas – carve burnished patterns into the fine-grained wood.

The scent of Ambrox, an intriguing fusion of warm, clean bark and sun-kissed skin, tattoos the delicate motifs onto the body… Serene and mystical, Palissandre d’Or is a journey into the quintessence of wood.

Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or will debut in May, and will be available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum, $245, or in a purse spray with three 10 ml refills, $195. The purse spray refills are $110.

This sounds pretty good, except for the pear. That’s a note I just can’t do much of. This seems more about the cedar though..and I do love cedar:). Will try to sniff this eventually.

It doesn’t really say there is a pear note, it says there is an ambrette note, which they describe as having a pear facet. Important distinction for the anti-pear contingent :-)

I did notice that after my post..I saw pear and got all..’oh no it’s pear’. Couldn’t read. Pear just stands out like a sore thumb. Not familiar with ambrette much..I’d wanna sniff this.

Looking forward to trying this one. I was up in the city a couple weeks ago and popped into Aedes. Spent way too much, but I’m enjoying everything I walked out with, especially my bottle of Iris Nazarena, which I’d been wanting since it came out. Copal Azur starts out beautifully, but the dry-down of amber and tonka is just too heavy for me. Oeillet Bengale starts out beautifully too, but, again, the dry-down is too much — the vanilla overtakes everything. My body doesn’t like vanilla for some reason. Anyway, I LOVE the bone-dry Iris Nazarena. One of my best buys of the year. Anyone particularly taken with any of the offerings from Aedes?

They advertise here so feel funny saying it, but I honestly think they’ve done a simply fantastic job. Helps that they’re featuring incense, one of my favorite notes, but also think they are just awfully good at creative direction.

I love Iris Nazarena and Copal Azur. Not so crazy about the first rhubarb one and I seem to be anosmic to Oeillet Bengale. I have high hopes for Palissandre!

I adore Iris Nazarena. I was wondering how wise my purchase of the big bottle was, but I discover new facets on each wearing. It’s also nice not worrying about running out. :)

This sounds great! That said, I am behind in my sampling / sniffing. Copal Azur came out last year and I have not even gotten a whiff of it. Theoretically, it should be fairly easy for me to access the line either via Barneys, which is a pleasant walk from the office on a nice day, or a subway ride away if I were inclined to venture out to the West Village (never mind that I had been to Aedes quite a few times – that area still confuses me).

I’ve gotten turned around a lot in that part of town. No matter how many times I try to leave, some sort of energy vortex keeps me walking back in the direction of Aedes.

LOL, I just wish the place was a little bigger…3 browsers and the place feels stifling!

And I should mention…do let me when you’re in town and I can probably round up a number of NY fumies (or even just me) and we can go sniffing together!

I just got a sample of this from the Aedes shop and am looking forward to giving it a proper wearing. I sprayed it on my inner wrist but it’s getting choked out by Mojave Ghost on the other side.
