If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day.
I'm wearing Calvin Klein CK One. I had to literally blow the dust off my mini. Anyone else remember the little metal vials they used to give out as samples? (And for all I know, they still do, although it seems unlikely.)
Reminder: tomorrow, 13 February, wear something by Guerlain. We already did this in summer, now we're doing it again for winter (or, for some of you, the other way around).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
SOTD: The Scent Of Peace for Him (Bond no. 9)
I don’t think I ever smelled the men’s version…
Thanks to you for reminding me that I have this my scent today is Chinatown. On my hands is Soap and Paper Factory Shea butter hand cream in Santal and Vanilla….boy, do I wish they made this in an EDP!
Oh and yes, I remember the little metal mini sample vials! In fact I have been perfume obsessed for so long (since 1971) that I remember when samples were literally thrown at you by SAs everywhere…it blows my mind that we are now paying for them-LOL!!!!
Yes, I had zillions of the little samples, so many that I never had to buy the fragrance.
Ditto!
Wow! Great way to save money! I also once had so many samples of Sinan that I transferred all into an empty perfume atomizer that I bought at Woolworths…filled it right up!
Woolworth’s! Oh I miss that one.
I know …me too! You could find anything in Woolworth’s and it was so affordable! (and I am really dating myself 🙂 !!)
Just before our local Woolworth’s closed (sometime in the early 1990s, I think), my best friend and I went there with a third person to take our photos in the store, for old time’s sake. Woolworth’s was across the street from an old arthouse movie theater, and we had spent plenty of time in Woolworth’s buying candy to sneak into the theater, noshing in the lunch area, and purchasing life’s necessities and cheap luxuries. A security guard approached us and told us that we couldn’t take photos in the store. Seriously? What sacred secrets was Woolworth’s hiding? We moved along to another part of the store, and took our photos anyway. I miss that place.
SOTD: Musc Maori. Ahhhh. Hot chocolate. Yum.
I think that’s all I will be smelling today. (Not that I mind of course! 😛 )
Yum, love that one! I might put some of that on too.
For better or for worse, ’tis the season for those little cinnamon heart candy and they are everywhere here at work, so I decided to go with it and wear L’Eau de Diptyque!
Red hots! I love those, haven’t had them in ages.
I looooove Red Hots. If anyone would bring cupcakes and had those on there..I would eat those first, then the frosting, then the cake. A whole method there:). Yum, now I want a bag. Those or Hot Tamales:).
I wish Australia had a thing for cinnamon flavour! Red Hots sound yum!
I love l’Eau one of their most distinctive scents!
I’m going to wear Neroli from Yves Rocher. Need a little zing, then it’ll settle to a soft cushion of easy muskiness. Nothing challenging, sick child at home then book club tonight. It’s a pot luck and I am making a sticky toffee pudding.
Oh, save some sticky toffee pudding for me! What’s the book?
And hope the little one is better soon.
Thanks Robin, the book was The Rosie Project, a really fun read, I laughed out loud several times.
The STP was epic but I used an insane amount of butter and sugar to make it. I will have to wait a while before I make it again!
Keeping my little fella in the warm as he is still sick and it’s pouring with rain out there.
Thanks, will look it up! And so sorry he is still not well 🙁
YR Neroli for me, too. Needed something uplifting. Funny that, I didn’t realise it has a musky base.
Hello Schneeze, I wish the neroli phase lasted longer in fact!…for me the musk takes over after an hour or so. Maybe it works differently on your skin!
I own a bottle of CKOne and I still like it. Very nice in the summer.
I’ve sprayed some of the last of my sample of La Fille de Berlin, and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new bottle!! After this – and a few decants of Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles I ordered via a Facebook group – I’m going to try to go on a no buy for a few……we’ll see if it holds.
Notice that you didn’t specifiy a few what–I’m sure you can hold off buying for a few minutes, then stretch it to a few hours, then a few days…..
…milliseconds….nanoseconds….
HA!!
I like your way of thinking….even if it does mean a longer period of time without new things to play with.
La fille de Berlin and Cuir de Russie are two of my favorites! I don’t know why I don’t own bottles. You made good choices before your no buy time period 🙂
LFB is my favorite dark sexy rose
Huffing my wrist on your behalf right now….
They are delightful, aren’t they?
Congrats! It’s a great scent! I am not huge on rose but love this, it’s fab..enjoy:).
This will be my first full bottle of rose, and fill a hole in my collection that needs filling. Well…”needs” is a relative term. Where does scent rank in Maslow’s hierarchy?
Definitely the upper levels. I’d say it’s firmly planted in the “self esteem” area.
SSS Yin & Ylang is all warm and golden on me. Think the weather was too warm the last time I tested it because I’m liking it better now
Day two of jury duty and day two of Lyric. I was excused at lunch time yesterday and must report back this morning. I would be very happy if today turns out to be another half day, but I don’t want to jinx it! (SHHHhhh! Don’t say anything!)
*fingers crossed*
Thanks for the luck–I’m officially done with my jury service. Woohoo! Now I get half a day off, since I can’t just go to work and take over for the sub. . . Seems like a good time to bake some bread, go to the gym, maybe mop my floor. . . you know, relax! 😀
HAHAHA, yeah. I totally hear you there.
Sticking w/ Guerlain and Habit Rouge Parfum. I almost never wear this one and I don’t know why–it is a fantastic musky, orange-blossom leather.
Assessing candidates for tomorrow with a spritz of Vega. Enjoying the sparkly aldehydes on this freezing cold morning.
is that the Biebs?
i just took a second look at that too…I think it is the Biebs! I also think those are some seriously photo shopped abs! Not that he couldn’t have abs like that, but the shading on his right side just looks so fake!
Definitely ‘shopped.
Yes, with Lara Stone.
Looking at that photo makes me feel indecent. Like looking at a picture of little girl “beauty” contestant. He’s still 16 in my mind. . .
Well, he still acts like it 😮
Burn!! (And completely true)
Probably not his real body anyway…
No, I saw a gif that showed all the photoshopping they did on him — gave him much bigger muscles and a bigger, ahem, package. No joke.
Ha! Now that’s some gender equity!
Oh, Vega. All those aldehydes! Like it froze over.
I’m so jealous! I LOVE Vega! I didn’t buy it when it was available and now I regret it.
Enjoy!
Congrats, you have just suggested my SOTD! Love Vega.
CK One always reminds me of high school … boys that over applied and left a trail of scent 🙂
SOTD is JCrew no 31. Rose, plum, patchouli, and oakmoss. This is my only perfume purchase this year (rollerball was hard to resist). It’s nice. I’d like to do a side by side compare to velour de roses (rose, plum, patchouli, and bergamont). If my memory is correct, they are very similar but no 31 might be smoother (as in, a more cleaned up patchouli).
CK on reminds me of High School as well! Everyone loved it! That and Electric Youth by Debbie Gibson
CK, Navy, Fendi, Poison, Exclamation, Parfums De Coeur…
We’re probably around the same age, because this has a strong connection for me with junior high and high school too. I smelled it everywhere in junior high a couple years after it came out, and I didn’t object to it even when they were drenched in it. It’s a hard thing to overapply, at least in my experience.
Nothing unisex has been that popular since, has it?
Yeah! CKOne was so sixth grade, lol!!! I actually smelled it in an elevator today.
Completely stressed out at work and hoping that I can get a little perk up from the Chanel Coromandel I just sprayed with abandon. The kids will be home for two days and deadlines loom. Happy Thursday, everyone!
I’ve still got a bottle of CKOne somewhere. I don’t think I ever saw those mini’s. It’s a good scent.
My SOTD is rather more Fierce than CKOne. I’m wearing Une Rose Chypree. It’s gorgeous and just what today required.
LOVE URC! You smell great! (And still will 6 hours from now–one of my favorite attributes of it!)
SOTD SJP Lovely. Initially feels kind of plastic-y. I haven’t worn this for a while, it may wear best in spring and summer.
EOD report…I definitely enjoyed this better in the dry down phase. Next time I will apply more liberally but on a warmer and sunnier day.
I’m wearing Kiss Me Tender. YUM! WANT!!
I am wearing Too Bee solid perfume by Illuminated Perfumes.
Testing out layering SSS Winter Woods and Rose Musc. I like the musk in Winter Woods and thought Rose Musc needed more, so I figured: why not? For some reason, the combination started off sour, but it’s calmed itself down and I can now detect the parts of both that I like. Might have been a better experiment if I’d just put one on each wrist instead.
Oh that sounds like a wonderful combo! have emptied FBs of Winter Woods, Jour E, Lieu de Rieves (sp? and d/c), Champagne deBois (pre- reformulation) Cocoa Sandalwood, Spiced Citrus Vetiver, Egyptian Musk (now d/c) and Forest Walk but have never thought of layering SSS scents…..
It’s definitely gotten better throughout the day. When I first put them on together, I was a little worried, but now it’s really coming together. Still feeling like I might be needing a full bottle or two, myself!
have you tried Jour Ensoleille (I know I am off with the spelling!)…..that is probably my favorite in the line…..gorgeous any time of year in any weather! Winter Woods comes off as a smokey vanilla on my skin….definitely full bottle worthy!
Jour Ensoleille is terrific.
yes! In my top 10 favourites of all time…(and did I actually spell it correctly, mals?)
The only florals I’ve tried have been the roses, but I’ve liked everything so far, so I definitely need explore the rest of the collection
Sonoma Scent Studio is definitely a line worth exploring…not only are the fragrances lovely but the perfumer is as well!
Wait, when did CdB get reformulated? I have a bottle that will likely last me a decade (that stuff is POTENT), but I love it the way it is. . .
it was a while ago…I know Laurie Erickson wrote about it on her blog…something to do with the supplier of the labdanum……
Go to the blog and read the post on June 15, 2008 (sorry but I couldn’t figure out how to cut and paste it!!!!)
Oh, if it was that far back, then mine post-dates it. Reassuring to know that the one I have is what is currently available!
And meant to say “Thanks!”
Just found out it was reformulated twice! June 20, 2012 post talks about the replacement of the labdanum!
Darn! I think my bottle is from just around then. . . I will have to check it out when I’m home. (I think I remember seeing date on the bottle?. . .) Good news of it, of course, is that it takes *so little* to be *so fragrant!*
You have emptied that many full bottles??? Quite an accomplishment!
My perfume craze started in the 70s…for many years I was extremely disciplined. I would have 7-10 full bottles in my fragrance wardrobe and whenever one was emptied I would replace it with something else (usually something different that I wanted to try). Back in those days there were so few new fragrance releases, no place to “buy” samples and no such thing as decanting and splits. I usually emptied about 8-10 bottles per year…so yes, I have emptied quite a few bottles thus far!
Speaking of layering SSS, Jour Ensoleille is great with a little A la Nuit to emphasize the jasmine.
I remember those little aluminum vials that CK One came in, kind of like a tiny milk bottle, and for CK Be they did the same thing but with a matte black coating. Those were NEAT.
Today I’m wearing a sample of Tauer Un Rose Chypré, and I wish I liked it better than I do, because the opening is interesting (kind of like rose marmalade) and you can tell it’s made with high quality materials: there’s nothing actually wrong with it, but it just gets less appealing as it ages on the skin. I’m supposed to look forward to the drydown.
Oh sad! Just saying above that the wonderful way it wears is what I love about URC! I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you. Have you tried other Tauer’s? He has several roses. I wonder if another one would suit you better?
I am sure I liked Incense Rosé better, although it’s been years since I wore it. The only Tauer I have ever really loved with abandon, enough to own a bottle, is Lonestar Memories, which is completely perfect.
For my money, Serge Lutens is the go-to rose perfumer. I mean, Sophia Grojsman made some world-class rose perfumes (Trésor, Paris) that have been reformulated into incoherence: all three Lutens roses are still great.
SOTD for this gray NYC day is my fav Amouage Journey: radiates Apricot, Jasmine Tea, Osmanthus-strong beginning (a very “Arab” scented perfume) and a lovely dry down..honey and vanilla.
I am wearing vintage Oscar perfume that I bought on Etsy. It is dreamy and takes me back in time.
Now THAT is a perfume that takes me back to high school…..(along with the original Chloe (gorgeous tuberose), Lauren, Halston…..)
I have never tried original Chloe, I am curious
original vintage Chloe (1975) was a gorgeous tuberose with notes of orange blossom, coconut, aldehydes, peach, carnation, oakmoss, sandalwood, amber, cedar, benzoin….I have it in its perfume version and after all these years still smells lovely…..I think some of the discount sites might have the original…
I like the current Chloe and had two full bottles of that one (haven’t tried any of the flankers, though) but it is a very different scent to me…lighter and more rose -centric…… the original Chloe was rich and luxurious and perfect for a cold winter day!
Thank you for your review, it sounds great. I will try to find one .
Don’t go to the discount sites to get it – it’s been Messed With big-time. But it still shows up for relatively inexpensive prices on ebay – the little parfum minis are usually under $10, and they’re wonderful.
I wore the good old Chloe myself for more than a decade, and it was lovely.
Oooooh, love the old Oscar. It is dreamy . . . and great for time travel. 🙂
SOTD is Pacifica’s Spanish Amber. The weather has gotten just a little cooler, although it’s still sunny. I thought amber would be just the thing to warm me up. However, there is a note in this one that is a little off today. I should have gone with my only other amber, L’Eau d’Ambree.
Agreed…Pacifica’s Amber is an odd little number…..I still like it but I prefer Tibetan Mountain Temple…..that is probably my absolute favorite in the line…..
I like Tibetan Mountain Temple too. That one is the candle that scents my living room. I have the fragrance and I wear it occasionally, but unfortunately the vanilla in the drydown bothers me. I love the candle, and although I have never lit it (I have cats), the scent of the candle is enough to waft through my small living room. I am planning on buying either one of the florals or one of the fruit scented candles for spring and summer, but I just can’t decide on which one.
Going to be a really bad influence but I would encourage you to buy more than one candle! The candles are exquisite and smell up the room quite quickly! Years ago Pacifica used to sell the smallest size candles in gift boxes of 12 in three different selections (woods, florals, fruits). Needless to say I bought all three boxes so I have tried them all! For spring I always liked mediterranean fig, french lilac and lotus garden….for the summer indian coconut nectar, hawaian ruby guava, island vanilla, tuscan blood orange, wakiki pikaki, california star jasmine and bali lime papaya ( I think that one might be discontinued though). The mexican cocoa and tibetan mountain temple are fantastic in the winter as well as the egyptian bergamot rose and avalon juniper (both discontinued). Honestly, they all smell great!!!! (I guess I haven’t helped you much with your decision 🙂 !!!)
Not really, but thanks for the information. I really wanted to try the Egyptian Bergamot Rose, but I didn’t buy it before it was discontinued. I like the pillar candles, because I have a tall candle holder that sits on my hearth and is the perfect size. I may try a couple of the scents though. Maybe a floral and a fruit.
Continuing on my sample program, I grabbed CdG Sequoia out of my stash.
I know that I really like this one, even though it leans a little masculine. It’s the definition of “bracing” and “contemplative” at the same time.
However, it is so short lived I could go through an entire bottle in a week. I dumped the entire sample on about 8am and it is already gone baby gone!
Wearing No 5 Eau Premiere and now thinking I need to get a full bottle of this. It’s really nice and easy to wear.
House showing last night was another bust. Nice house, wrong neighborhood. Back to square one.
Thanks for all the encouragement and kind comments yesterday. It feels like we’re still spinning in place, despite how many houses we’ve seen, but we’ve definitely gotten better and choosing which ones will suit us better. 🙂
Almost went with Eau Premiere…wish I had! You smell wonderful!
SOTD is Tokyo Bloom by The Different Company”. I am still on the fence of whether I like this fragrance or not. I want to love it because the notes it has are ones I don’t typically wear. Basil, dandelion, guaiac wood,….
This is a “green” fragrance and its a little different (haa!, hence the name of the perfumers).
Anyone tried this ? What were your thoughts?
I havent tried it but those notes sound really interesting!
I tried it and liked it a lot. But then I realized that it smelled almost exactly like something else I already had, and that the something else was less expensive, so I never got beyond my little 1 mL sample. Of course, now I’ve forgotten what the something else was…I’ll see if I can figure it out once I’m home tonight.
I liked this one – to me it smelled really ‘alive’. Lots of things smell photo-realistic, but not very many actually smell like living flowers to me. But something about Tokyo Bloom did.
SOTD for me is Vetiver Tonka. Probably the only Hermessence that lasts beyond the hour for me.
Forgot how much I like this one.
Have you tried Ambre Narguilé? That and VT are pretty long-lasting on me: the others are vapour.
Yes, I have. I’ve been sampling that one too and you’re right that it does last longer than the others, but VT is still the longest.
In fact the pearls I’m wearing smell gorgeously of VT end its end of day.
SOTD is Olympic Orchids Gujarat, fascinating……….
TF Tuscan Leather.
It’s full blast leather or eau de cologne these days, go figure …
I am in Lubin Korrigan today. It smells good in cold weather, but I often wear it in spring and summer, too.
I tried this the other day. Totally swoon-worthy, and straight to the ‘have some for cooler weather’ list! 🙂
Starting Guerlain day early with Myrrhe et Delires. It opens so beautifully, then kind of fizzles out. I’m home, though, so I can keep reapplying to enjoy the beginning. I have a decant but probably won’t invest in a full bottle.
I’ve not tried that one, but after reading about it – it sounds lovely! I like a good incense fragrance and need to get a sample of it.
I’ve no idea which Guerlain I want to wear for tomorrow. All of the ones I have sound good right now.
In Encens Mythique D’Orient myself. If I forget about G-day tomorrow at least I hit a high spot earlier on…
We’re scent twins! MeD does have a great opening. I find the whole fragrance difficult to describe. It is plush to me and thick. The promised myrrh lasts for only a short time, then it’s mostly tonka, dry spices and musk. I like it. I just don’t wear it often.
Fils de Dieu today. Ive noticed i have ‘early summer’ and ‘late summer’ preferences. As the summer wears on and the heat becomes oppressive and the humidity rises, I find that there’s a group of frags I wear that fit, and the fresh breezy summery ones from earlier are just not right… hmmm… well… good thing I’ve got the numbers in my collection to readily face such a revelation!! 😉
I love that one in warm weather.
Totally makes sense! The local climate has progressively gotten warmer and sultrier over the summers this past decade, and I’ve found I need more genuinely light and airy scents for those times! I feel lucky that it’s still only for short periods of time that it’s sticky hot like that, but I can truly appreciate the need for scents that suit those days!
I bought that one when it stood up really well to a heat wave a couple of years ago. Worked great in 100F temps with humidity in the 90s percentagewise
Just one wee spritz of Ubar today. In bed on painkillers from a dental emergency yesterday. I feel terrible and a little silly. Oh the dramas of aging!
Hope you feel better soon. At least you smell great 🙂
Feel better soon!
Dental emergencies are awful! I hope you recover soon.
Ugh, so sorry!
I’m so sorry about your dental trauma. Mouth stuff is my nightmare. Hope you heal quickly! Hope you can rest, read and rejoin the world soon.
My SOTD is French Lilac by Pacifica (because Bardot mentioned it yesterday).
You smell heavenly! When the snow disappears and my lilacs start to emerge from the lilac bush in my garden I bust out my French Lilac from Pacifica….interestingly enough when I wear it I get compliments and no one tells me that I “smell like an old lady” (a remark I get whenever I wear some of my vintage loves)….Pacifica’s French Lilac is such a clean, light, floral that sings spring to me!
My scent today is Kelly Caleche. I haven’t worn it in probably a year and forgot how elegant and ethereal it is.
I’m wearing Rodin Olio Lusso edp. I bought a decant of this, thankfully, instead of the 30ml/$220 bottle. I love the scent, it’s a jasmine bomb, but the longevity is abysmal–less than an hour and a half on me.
I am decluttering today–where does all this stuff come from? I swear it pops into existence overnight and then reproduces on the weekends.
All my clutter comes from having a husband in the house. 😉
I can’t even blame my husband. Today I went through a huge pile of stuff with some junk mail dating back to 2012!
This is me, too. Piles of it. Exhausting just thinking about it. So i tuck into closets and cubbies. Awful.
My SOTD for Throwback Thursday is vintage Lentheric Tweed, which I was lucky to find at an estate sale a couple of years ago. Complex, earthy, woody, it still smells the way it did years ago when I first discovered it – shortly after I became an Anglophile (having a best friend who was half-English and then discovering Agatha Christie clinched it), I used to wear it with all my winter wools and I felt very British! My bottle is probably 40+ years old (Tweed was originally created in 1933) and has aged very nicely, I don’t get much in the way of floral notes, but the oakmoss/patchouli drydown is divine.
Fun! Throwback Thursday works *much* better than Run of the House Thursday…
I just discovered this one recently and I adore it!
Infusion d’iris today, minutes away from my dentist appointment and hoping it goes as quickly as possible. The drill is my least favorite sensation. Have never completely gotten over this particular childhood fear. Can power through it, but it’s no easy thing.
Then I’ll head back to work. Exciting day.
Hope all goes well for you, I share exactly that same fear so my thoughts are with you.
I feel your pain… ! Good luck.
Wearing Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds today.
You smell lovely!
Starting with Guerlain early, though it isn’t a “real” one – AA Mandarine Basilic. The only real ones I have are samoples and not appropriate at all for this weather we are having now – Santa Ana winds and 80+! But perfect for the Mandarine and Herba Fresca planned for tomorrow.
Trying to make a dent in my samples, I dabbed myself with Bogue Maai. Not a keeper. My only Guerlain is an Aqua de something, bought because it was affordable.
I am sampling Tauer Carillon pour un Ange today. Not being a green scent lover, I wasn’t expecting to love it and while it is clearly well done, it is not for me. I am glad I tried it though. Still want to try Rêverie au Jardin too.
Going through my Atelier samples just in case I want to use the discount code I have. Wearing Vetiver Fatal and thinking I may have skipped it before as it isn’t ringing any bells. I don’t think a discount is probably a good way to prioritize buying but… and I like that they have smaller sizes.
As long an Atelier hits your “To Buy” list, a coupon is a perfect excuse to make a purchase…
My SOTD is Hiram Green Shangri la.
I am wearing The Different Co Bergamote – which I absolutely love – for the first and only 15 minutes that it lasts. Sigh.
I’m wearing Shalimar Ode a la Vanille today.
I’ve got the flu and a dry cough, so I’m not wearing perfume. As a result, no Guerlain this week, but I wore Nahema several times last week. It works very well at this time of year.
In lieu of perfume, I’m enjoying Bruno, Chief of Police, a mystery that takes place in a small town in the Perigord. It’s a great way to take one’s mind off the flu. Thanks to Robin for the recommendation!
🙁 feel better soon!
Am in my current favorite layering duo – Cuir Mauresque with a bit of Rose Anonyme. I like the RA, but initially it has a … yeast-y overtone that I’m not sure I like. Was going to try the CM layered with Bellodgia this morning, but couldn’t find my Bellodgia sample. This weekend perhaps. In the meantime, anyone have a rec for a simple rose or carnation for further CM layering experiments?
CdG’s Carnation in the Red series…
Thanks! Will give it a try.
Taking Coco Noir out for a spin to a hot sweaty workout. Let’s see if she can take the heat 😉
SOTD = Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille
Very cozy boozy vanillic. I was in very close quarters with a bunch of other people in a crowded elevator and I hope that no one thought I was drinking at lunch!
Today, I interviewed 2 people and I could have sworn one of them wore Amouage Jubilation XXV. If Inwas 100% sure, I would have used perfume talk to break the ice although in hindsight, the candidate may obsess over having potentially offended me by wearing a noticeable scent.
Better to enjoy fragrance rather than liquor at lunch, eh?
I’m finding, much to my surprise, that I am developing a fondness for boozy fragrances. A whiff of the old Champagne/Yvresse got me started. Then Cedrat Enivrant jumped into my favorites list. Recently I noticed a hint of cognac in Hermes Vanille Galante. It makes me smile.
I noticed your comment over the weekend regarding the Hermes lock spray. I saw one being refilled once a while ago. I seem to remember the styrofoam needed to come off for the refill to fit in the lock case.
I should wander over to my local Hermes boutique and ask for a demonstration, yeah, not really, lol, that’s not my life right now. 🙂
Wow I can’t believe how cold it got tonight. Today I’ve been wearing Sacrebleu. I like it more than the first time I tried it.
SotD was Cedrat Enivrant. I am still enjoying it 10 hours later.
