Tuesday scent of the day 2/10

Posted by Robin on 10 February 2015 160 Comments

cedar fence

Happy Tuesday! What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Kerosene Canfield Cedar.

Reminder: this Friday, 9 February, wear something by Guerlain. We already did this in summer, now we're doing it again for winter (or, for some of you, the other way around).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Brand twins! I’m wearing Kerosene Black Vines. And wowee, what a weird one! I wasn’t expecting that huge cinnamon note. From a distance it makes me think of baked apples. (I’m working on an article about licorice notes.)

Love. Woody but not just cedar. Smells fantastic over the incense soap from Nesti Dante that Jonas (Jonas, are you here today?) made me buy.

            Snort. “Made you buy.” 😀

Mals, “made me buy” is actually pretty accurate. Lol

I kept mentioning this soap not so subtly every time the subject of incense came up and I linked her to an eBay seller with free shipping.

          • Robin says:

Hey, it’s really great soap! I forgive Jonas for making me buy it. Kevin will hopefully review soon…I sent him half my bar.

          • Jonas says:
            10 February 2015 at 1:11 pm

Thanks. Your forgiveness takes a great weight off my shoulders. 🙂

I’m on a soap “no buy” right now. I’ve got more than 2 kg spread throughout my dresser. Even so, I just picked up two more bars. I found tomato soap and carrot soap (also from Nesti Dante) for just 6 dollars at Winners. How could I resist? These make good gifts so I can always pare down my collection that way. I do need to try their straight up iris soap though.

Is Black Vines licorice or anise? I find most licorice perfumes, such as Eau de Reglisse, are the herb licorice (and smell much like licorice root tea) rather than the black stuff, which is aniseed flavoured.

Licorice is actually flavored with anise oil. So it’s the same scent essentially, though licorice candy also has a lot of sugar of course.

Black Vines came out while I was working at MiN. Of course everyone was curious about the new Kerosene, but smelling it all the time cemented its place as one of my all-time least favorite perfumes. I like a lot of anise perfumes (Lolita Lempicka 4 lyfe), but Black Vines makes me completely nauseous. But I hope you’re enjoying it, several hundred miles away from me 😉

Happy to have tried it, and I don’t hate it, but I’m also not sure I’ll ever wear it again! Reminds me a little too strongly of cinnamon gum, which I hate. I like it better from a distance, so I might try to pass it off to my homme.

    SOTD: Saso by Shiseido.
It’s one of those beautiful classic they-hardly-make-them-anymore kind of aldehyde floral. Elegant and plush and slightly dirty florals with a touch of earthiness and warm civet-amber base. Love it!

Tauer’s Incense Rosé. I have a leaky sample and figured I should finish it off even though I didn’t like it the first few times I tested it. The rose seems totally eclipsed to me by loud, sharp, prickly cedar(?). Not my thing, but at least it dries to be soft and pleasant enough. Clearly one I don’t “get.”

It’s really terrible on my skin – something about it goes very sour and acrid, unfortunately. As I like to say, a Tauer scent either really works for me or it really doesn’t, very little in-between.

A spritz of SSS Nostalgie for me today. I was craving decadence and warmth, and this fits the bill. The beeswax note in this is a real delight too.

I am ordering a bunch of empty atomizers so I can decant and share some of my perfumes! Yay! Hopefully decanting is not any trickier than I think it is…

Definitely Champagne de Bois, even though it’s not my standard style, because everyone praises it. Velvet Rose and Rose Musc because I’m on my rose kick and I don’t have samples of those (I’ve got a little dabber of Rose Volupte already). Incense Pure because that gets rave reviews as well.

          What do you think?

To add my two cents, personally, I like Rose Musc, but I want more musk in it (still a very pretty rose, though!). However, I adore Winter Woods in all its sweet, thick, slightly-musky glory. Of course, my SO hates it, probably because I wear too much at once, so it’s clearly not for everyone.

I’m wearing Xerjoff Esquel from the Shooting Stars collection and I am completely in love with this perfume. It’s taking first place over all the other FB WANT fragrances on my list. It starts off like a men’s fragrance with brisk bergamot and lavender but warms up with opoponax and patchouli. It’s such a gorgeous transition into sultry warm resins and wisps of incense with herbal notes from the lavender. Absolute LOVE and NEED asap. This is one of those sex-in-a-bottle type fragrances for me.

We are having some beautiful, spring-like days, so I thought that I would try AG Songes. I’ve had this sample for a while, but never tried it, put off by the vanilla probably. However, it’s vanilla note is not nearly as noticeable as the lovely florals. I’m looking forward to the drydown. Everybody raves about Songes, so I hope that I love it too! So far, so good.

Hope you’re enjoying the Songes. I have the edp and it is also a cherished favorite for me. Funny, I’m the opposite of you, as a vanilla-lover, I tried it because of the vanilla as I am usually put off by white florals (and still am)! But it is a truly lovely composition, and the drydown lingers on and on quite beautifully.

This morning I sampled Montale Nepal Aoud, which I thought was pretty darn yum. Then I went to the shops and tried Eau de Gaga which wasnt nearly so yum and drowned out Nepal. It wasnt bad but I have other, better fresh summer ‘eau’s’.

At work tonight and wearing Roma. There was a terrible accident at work today, before I started. I drive passenger trains and a maintenance worker fixing boomgates accidentally stepped in front of a train and was killed. Tragic accident and devestating for everyone involved.

SOTD is my faithful companion Miss Dior. The original one although I really don’t think it should be necessary to point it out (Dior, I’ll never forgive you for messing up those names).

Scent twins! Getting over a cold so showered with the invigorating YR Cedre bleu shower gel, spritzed Pino Silvestre lavishly because it does not last on my skin and finished with Kyphi which I mostly read as cassia and balsam. I am sure I am a resin bomb but I will be enjoying my own company today and need not fear offending others.

Memoir Woman, last time I wore it I thought after a while I got some tuberose. Not sure if I like that. I don’t see tuberose as an official note but white flowers are listed. Nonetheless, overall..it’s a wonderful perfume..that’s for sure.

There’s definitely some tuberose in there, and the white floral stuff is really prominent on me. That’s probably one reason I love it so much.

I’ve not tried that one but want to. I really like several Atelier Colognes, but none of them last on me all that long. I could never justify a perfume purchase that fades after only a couple hours.

Bummer! Most of the Atelier Cologne line last very well on me, and I wear them all the time. I was thinking that I bypass some of my more demanding divas daily for these simple pleasures. I can usually still smell them (very close to the body!) at the end of the day. You have to factor in that I live in Texas, basically in a sauna 😀

Back from the trip to San Antonio, now trying to deal with the laundry (grr) and the nasty cold I picked up from my husband… the cold has now migrated from sniffles and a runny nose into post-nasal drip and sore throat, soon to move into chest congestion. GAAAAH.

Hot tea and Jolie Madame extrait today.

It definitely does have a warm-weather thing going, a nice beach-y rose vibe! Today was a case of ‘grab a random sample,’ so I wasn’t thinking much about how it fit the weather, but I do think I’ll like it more in warm weather. Though given that the forecast calls for snow on Thursday and Saturday, I think I’d like *anything* more in the warmth right about now!

I just found a whole bunch of samples I forgot I had so I am going to power through them come hell or high water. Today I wore Voleur de Roses, which I have been trying very hard to like for at least twenty years, and it’s just no use: it hates me. (Durable stuff, though: after seven hours I can still smell it clearly. Too bad it’s so awful on me.)

I do the same thing, trying things in different seasons, to see if it would wear better, or if my mood/attitude will be different. Have fun with your forgotten samples! Hope you find a hidden gem (of purest ray serene). Be well.

I’m sampling Oriza L. Legrand Chypre Mousse today and now I see where all the love came from. This is, to my nose, far and away the best of the scents I have sampled from the line. Green and mossy, and I don’t generally care for green, but I like this one. It’s not a sharp green, more like a fallen leaves smell–a little earthy, but still plant-like.

Home a 2nd day with a sick kiddo. Yesterday we watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which was hysterical – as always! Today we’re planning to watch School of Rock, another favorite.

SOTD – EL Sensuous Nude. Light and inoffensive, goes well with a sick child and the glimmers of sunshine I see trying to poke out through the clouds.

What I mean about Sensuous Nude is that it’s pretty and light – and inoffensive in a way that I can snuggle my little guy (who is 12 and taller than me) without the scent bothering him. 😉

Diorissimo, Jessica McClintock, beyond that, I am very interested to see other people’s suggestions as well. I love Lily of the Valley – it tends to wake me up, but Diorissimo only lasts an hour on me, and Jessica McClintock even less.
An elderly and elegantly dressed lady walked by me in the Main Lobby of the hospital once, smelling so fabulous I went after her and asked her, “What was she was wearing that smelled so good?” She laughed and said, “Oh, it’s Diorissimo!”
I laughed and said, “Of course that is what that is!” Probably a vintage bottle from 1961 or something. It was great.

More roses and spice for me today: Pacifica Persian Rose + Mountain Temple Incense. First time for this combo and I’m surprised. I thought perhaps the Mountain Temple would overpower the Rose with its incense but the rose sings through loud and clear. I’m pleased, it’s a nice cold-weather combo. Think I’ll try Persian Rose + Tuscan Blood Orange in warmer weather. Rose + blood orange + raspberry = 3 favorite notes for me.

Later, I’ll add a touch of L’Air Desert du Marocain (I don’t know how to spell it either) in anticipation of tonight’s special Valentine showing of Casblanca at my local Art Deco theater. As a history and classic film lover, watching the greats on the large screen in a theater that showed it the first time around adds an extra dimension of enjoyment, not to mention our young but extraordinarily talented film historian host, who often adds a special guest or two (usually a relative of someone who appeared in the film) as well as a prize drawing relative to the film being shown. Tonight we’ll also be treated to a pre-show pipe-organ concert from the lovely restored instrument original to the theater. (And I’ll be discreetly huffing my Desert hand throughout 🙂 .)

I wear a scent (often, very discreetly, of course so I’m the only one who can smell it) that somehow relates to the book/film. Adds to my enjoyment of the event and makes me feel like a kid with a secret :-).

SOTD is Versace Versense. It was an early purchase on my perfume trajectory and I don’t wear it a ton now, but I smelled it on someone in my yoga class yesterday and found myself wishing I had it on too! As per Robin’s review, it is super clean but very likable. Feels like the scent equivalent of fluffy, catchy pop music–perhaps not the most substantive of artistic accomplishments, but has a certain appeal 🙂

Today was a workin’ on the farm type day so I started with Wit on one arm and Flowerhead on the other. Yeah, they are different enough that I ultimately need both. Then, since I had worn through the florals with the vehicle repairs, I sprayed some Jalsimer which got me through the tilling and compost spreading nicely. After the surprise chainsaw project (yay! We found huge a downed cypress branch that my husband needed) I showered and decided on some vintage BAV to go with my whiskey and well deserved sofa time.
