Friday scent of the day 2/6

Posted by Robin on 6 February 2015 179 Comments

grapefruit

Happy Friday, and happy Grapefruit Month! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.

I’m wearing the bright and cheerful Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Pamplemousse. Has anyone ever bought a scented body lotion from DSH, and if so, what did you think?

Reminder: this Sunday (2/8), we're celebrating this blog's 10th birthday: wear a fragrance you learned about on Now Smell This, whether from a review, another reader, a swap, anything.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

An obvious choice, for me: Jo Malone Grapefruit.
I find it pretty similar to their Mandarine Lime & Basil (if that’s the right name – never sure of the order!). I like it, but I’d like it better on my fiancé. I feel like I smell like a sexy man! Ha! (Though I’m sure most of you won’t thinks it’s “manly”… Guess we all have different scent associations!)

I like both of these but there is something about the JM Grapefruit which reminds me of one of my favorite AG’s -Eau D”Hadrien…..

I’m not a huge grapefruit fan. It tends to turn funky on me (Jo Malone Grapefruit) but Jour is really nice and stays fresh smelling the whole day on me.

Pacifica’s Brazilian Mango Grapefruit layered with Pacifica’s Avalon Juniper- an ecclectic blend of grapefruit, heliotrope and juniper berries….one of my favorites of this line and, sadly, it has been discontinued….. I am savouring my last bottle…..

They discontinued both of those, or just the Mango Grapefruit? Either way, too bad.

just the Avalon Juniper…they seemed to get rid of the ones that were woods/spice/resins (ie: Madagascar Spice, Thai Lemongrass, etc) and added more fragrances to the fruit/floral line-up…but I guess that is to be expected….go with what sells….too bad for it is an extremely affordable all natural line of edps…

that was the main reason I bought it to begin with…blind buy b/c I loved the bottle with the cute little gray owl! The fragrance is an unusual blend of grapefruit, heliotrope and juniper berries which makes it quite suitable for winter wear……(their Brazilian Mango Grapefruit is much sweeter and more of a summer scent for me)

Hansen(?) Mandarin Lime if I’m remembering correctly. Only came in cans when I was a kid and therefore my parents didn’t buy it often (cans were more expensive to buy than a 2 liter bottle)

Looked for my mini of Pampelune: nowhere to be found. Sighed and looked for my bottle of In Love Again: nada. (Did I give it away?) Went to Basenotes to see if I had anything else with grapefruit it in. Eventually gave up and wore the CK One clone/homage/ripoff Paco by Paco Rabanne, which I am not one hundred percent sure has grapefruit it in, but I think it does, and that’s going to have to do.

After CK One did like a zillion dollars of business, there were a huge batch of unisex copies: of course there were, because you have to follow the money. Ferre did Gieffeffe (which you’d forgotten existed, hadn’t you?), Salvador Dali did Dalimix, Benetton did Cold (and, if I remember correctly, Hot was also a fresh-despite-its-name unisex scent), for starters. Lots of fragrances marketed as men’s scents were also directly influenced by CK One: Azzaro Chrome is one that comes to mind.

Mind you I also still own a bottle of CKOne. Wasn’t Nikos another clone? And L’Eau par Kenzo?

Grapefruit is a tough note for me. I’m wearing Amouage Interlude Woman, which lists it as a note but with so much else going on it’s not very noticeable.

I bought lotion from DSH ages ago—one of them was Tonka Bean, which I think was discontinued, and I can’t remember what else right now. They were great and very highly scented lotions.

I chose to wear Pamplelune today as well, mainly because I thought it was the only grapefruit I owned. Not really appropriate for the weather but oh well. If I had thought about the AG Eau du Sud and the Eau d’Hadrien, I would probably have gone for one of them instead. Of course I consider them to also be warm weather scents.

Oh, grapefruit! Yuck! I don’t like to eat it nor wear it. Didn’t think I could play today but -TA DA! – found a sample of Bond No. 9 Little Italy, for which grapefruit is a listed note. Fortunately, I don’t smell it, just an added tartness to the orange. Orange gelato notwithstanding, I’ve been to Little Italy and many other Italian neighborhoods and can think of many other scent notes more appropriate.

Today is Wear Red Day (first Friday in February in honor of heart disease research) so later I will choose a more appropriate ‘red’ scent from my wardrobe to harmonize with the red sweater I’m wearing today.

After the initial burst of a tart bright orange, I immediately get ‘orange cleaning product’. Then, as that softens, a strong cilantro note arrives and lingers for a long time (others have noticed this in reviews I’ve read so I know I’m not imagining it) . Now, I love cilantro – I grow it in my garden and like cats who love to roll in catnip, I could roll in cilantro! I cook with it a lot in Mexican dishes but have never ever heard of it in conjunction with anything Italian, and I cook a lot of Italian foods. Basil, yes, but cilantro, no. So, though I love most orange fragrances, this one, to me, cilantro+orange-cleaning-product, is a real scrubber.

Not a scent twin, but also wearing red for heart disease research today. My Jour d’Hermes Absolu doesn’t exactly suit my outfit, either, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so maybe I’ll just get into my pajamas.

Houbigant Quelques Fleurs Royale. I don’t necessarily object to it, but it’s not a favorite. Might eventually send this along to someone else because it could probably find a happier home. But hey – a scent with tuberose that I can tolerate! Counting that as a win.

Random – I have a superior at my job (not my boss, but *technically* in a role above mine) who is a cranky old man and has chosen me to pick on because I am too nice. I get along with everyone, and am very professional, and I even got along well with him until recently, but his outright rudeness (never in front of my boss of course) is really starting to get to me.

I’m always quick to apologize, even if it’s not my fault, and tend to bend over backwards to keep things pleasant and nice, and these are traits I’m trying to work on, but I definitely think they’ve contributed to his continuing poor treatment of me, and I want to make a change. Any advice anyone has (maybe spraying Secretions Magnifique all over his office while he’s in the bathroom?) would be welcome.

Thanks dears, and have a lovely Friday!

Ugh! About five years ago, I had a really hard year at work – lots of difficult people! Now when I work with difficult people, I handle it on my own but I let my boss know. Like, FYI, I have been having to deal with this – you don’t need to get involved but I wanted you to be aware of the situation. That way, if it escalates or becomes unbearable, your boss will (hopefully) be on your side.

Also – my work life has gotten a lot better since I stopped caring about what people think of me (being mean or wrong, etc.). However, I was only able to do so after having gone through a lot

Good reason to buy a new bottle – you have got to keep up moral ;)

I did tell my boss, but lovely woman though she is, she too is not terribly assertive in this particular area, even though she is HIS boss. Several other people complained about his behavior generally (he’s become a cranky old man and cranks at a few other people too, though they are not his inferiors, so it seems less abusive somehow), and it’s possible she may have had a talk with him, but I’m not sure how useful that ultimately was. Thus, as she isn’t terribly effective at protecting me, I’m going to have to protect myself. But this is just not a circumstance to which I’m accustomed.

And you are SO right about not caring what people think. That is a goal I am trying to progress towards. I have this people-pleasing thing that I just haven’t shaken yet, but I must. Life will be so much easier!

But most importantly – THERAPEUTIC PERFUME! What to buy, what to buy?

Does your coworker only say rude things to you, or does he ever e-mail rude things to you too? If e-mail, then you already have a paper trail, and you should ABSOLUTELY cc your boss the next time he sends you something like that. And consider sending to HR as well if just ccing your boss does not end the rudeness.

If he only ever says them, then that makes me think he is a much more clever bully. It will be harder to prove what he is doing. But in that case, you tell him that you will not answer his question/continue the conversation until he can phrase his request politely. At that point, let your boss know what happened, and that he has a history of acting like this with you. He may do it to other people as well.

It has not been over email – just in conversation. It’s usually an issue of interrupting, dismissiveness, and tone.

And yes, when he next does this, I’m gearing myself up to tell him that I won’t be spoken to that way….which I don’t think I’d have a problem with, except that he *is* in a position superior to mine and it’s just an awkward situation.

It’s strange – I’m very strong in many situations, but this area is not my strong suit.

Thanks for the encouragement and support!

If it’s any reassurance, I had a really similar experience during my graduate coursework–a number of professors just treating me incredibly shabbily, and I loathed the idea of pushing back, most especially to people so senior to me–isn’t the whole point of education that they know what should happen in the classroom and I don’t? But to my great surprise, when I finally did call it out (specifically, I said more than once, during seminars, that I didn’t think it was constructive to be as disparaging as they were being, to me and others), it completely changed how they treated me. I had assumed any dissent would antagonize them (…I only spoke up because it had gotten so bad, I no longer much cared if they kicked me out), but instead it was like suddenly they respected me. Now of course that made me respect them SO much less (that they’re only respectful to students who won’t tolerate being beaten up on = not a productive environment, by a long distance), but at least it made things easier until I could get out of there.

CH, I am so sorry you had to go through that, but thank you so much for sharing. It does seem that many people only give respect when it’s demanded…a shame, but apparently often true.

When he interrupts, try raising your hand in his direction and continuing to speak…. (The stop gesture), when it’s his tone or he is being dismissive, give him a knowing look, a raised eyebrow, an upside-down smile or simply laugh out loud. He is being ridiculous and needs putting in his place. Oooo I hate confrontation, I’m a lover not a fighter. Good luck!

Ugh, I’m sorry. If you’re not interested in going to HR with it, assuming you have an HR dept. (not that going to them always does much), I would start documenting and writing down as much as you can, dates, interaction, etc. Just in case.

Does he make comments? Is it something that you could look at him an with a neutral face, ask “what do you mean by that?” or “why would you say that?” Responses like that can be very effective in focusing the spotlight on their crappy behavior, while keeping you 100% above the fray.

Or just cultivate an air of simmering rage. That could also work.

Our HR department consists of one man who never gets back to anyone on anything and is based in Ohio (I am in New York). In addition, as this is an older nonprofit, there are many other people here who have been here for years and behave equally inappropriately to other people. Screaming is a hobby for some in this office, and so my concerns are small potatoes.

I think the air of shimmering rage (love this phrase) has long since been established, but I’m not sure how effective that’s been, because I haven’t followed it up with assertive action to defend myself. That has to change. I absolutely have to respond as you described, or say “That is not an appropriate way to speak to me” next time.

Thank you thank you for your feedback and help!

Along the lines of shimmering rage, do you have some hobby that you can bring in to work for your lunch break? I’ve found that people are much more careful after they’ve made a snarky comment about my knitting, and then I smile sweetly and say, “I knit so I don’t kill people.”

If possible, maybe have a sit down with him and let him know his treatment of you is bothering you. Let him know you understand he is a superior but that doesn’t give him the right to treat you with rudeness and be dismissive of you. Usually when you confront people straight up they take notice. If he’s going to give you crap about it, then let him know you’re not afraid to go over his head if his behavior doesn’t stop. If he asks if that’s a threat – they say YES IT IS because you’re trying to do your best, but for some reason HE is being the issue. If you’ve got the gumption to go the direct route it might throw him for a loop since you seem to be the nice one/ appeaser of the office (I mean that in a good way).

If that approach is too much drama then definitely go to your boss and let him/her know that the guy has a stick up his butt that needs to be removed because his rudeness is clearly him taking something out on you.

Ha! I sound like such a grouch. If there’s one thing I can’t tolerate it’s jerks in the workplace. I’ve dealt with so many in the past. Luckily my new job is fabulous and I really like everyone. There’s definitely a good work culture here, which is SO important!

And yes, perfume therapy – ALWAYS. I am totally in the enabler camp there. :) I might be doing some of that myself this weekend. I’m finally getting insurance money back from when I was mugged and while a good chunk was taken out from the deductible, it’s still more than I anticipated. :)

You might have already read this above, but I did go to my boss a while ago, and as she’s not the most aggressive personality, her talk with him appears not to have had much of an effect.

Still, you’re absolutely right that I just need to address it directly. And no you’re not a grouch – you just know what you’re talking about because you’ve faced it. I really appreciate your feedback.

But man, you wonder who raised some people. One of my coworkers quotes Harry Belafonte: “These children ain’t got no behavior.”

Still debating what perfume to buy for therapy. Maybe a mini of Diva? I’ve been wanting to try it.

No advice at all but just wanted to offer my sympathy. I’v been in that situation many many times – especially when i worked in retail. There were always colleagues who would take on this grumpy attitude and then everyone felt like they have to walk on eggshells around them; and those individuals got away with the rudest things. I think being sullen in certain situations is just a power thing for some people :( Lots of luck and hope it improves.

I’m not terribly assertive either. In fact, sounds like you and I could be twins. I haven’t ever had a lot of trouble with co-workers (I worked with my mother in law for eight years so asserting myself wasn’t an option, I just vented to my boss frequently) but patients and other doctors/office managers were occasionially down right abusive. I found that the best tactic for me was to very politely inform them that I did not care for their disrespectful attitude and was not willing to be treated rudely. I tend to have a very bad poker face anyway in the face of rudeness and with most people my surprised blink, raised eyebrow, and overlong pause before pointedly forgiving their lapse in manners and/or ignoring them works wonders. Occasionally, a very direct “cool it” did the trick too (learned that one from the MIL), especially with older grumpy male patients who just wanted someone to push around. If they asked what I meant or tried to play innocent I just straight up answered that they were being rude and should know better.
However you handle it, I think a new perfume is in order! Facing down a bully is an irritating part of life but is very satisfying when you get to the other end.

There’s a lot of good advice here. Definitely document the imcidents. If he is shorter than you, make sure you stand up whenever he comes near you – non-verbal intimidation may give you an advantage. If he is going directly to you to get work done, you can say I’m busy, talk to OUR boss and let her prioritize the work.

So, I tried to spray some of Atelier’s Orange Sanguine to calm it down a bit, but to no avail…..Pomelo is very potent! So, yeaaa for me trying something different, but Pomelo isn’t for me.

Atelier Cologne’s Pomelo Paradis. The top notes are great in theory (my husband was very complimentary). I love grapefruit, but I used a bottle of The Body Shop’s grapefruit body wash in college and now I associate grapefruit notes with a particular and not entirely pleasant time in my life (one of those “relationships” you have freshman year of college that are so ambiguous that when they end, you can’t really call it a breakup, but whatever it was, it didn’t end well…).

Anyhoo, I did 5 sprays of this one and I think it’s basically gone already, which is fine, for the aforementioned reason (nothing like cringing over 15 year old memories as you’re getting ready for work!). The mid-notes gave low sillage and smelled a little cheap anyway. But luckily I brought my Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt to work today because I anticipated this would happen. So I’ll be spritzing that on over lunch.

This is probably the most fleeting of Hermès fragrances on me. Sur le Nil actually can last almost all day.

And there really is a Concentré version of this one, and I was pleased to see that. I’ve only tested briefly, so I can’t say if it’s more rosy or anything.

Ironically, Concentré d’Orange Verte has something about it that makes me feel a bit ill, so I stick to the original Eau on that one.

I don’t hate grapefruit, but it’s not represented in the scores and scores of frags I own. Maybe this is another frag challenge I can add to my “tea” interests this year. The only frag I have is a decant of Un Jardin sur le Nil, which I only wear it the hottest summer weather. And since this morning it was about minus one F, I’m opting for warm and fuzzy with Bottega Veneta… there is some bergamot in there!

    1. Lavanila’s Grapefruit Vanilla. I don’t like it because it smells very perfume-y. Glad I only bought the rollerball.

    2. Pacifica’s Brazilian Grapefruit Mango. I really like this one, but I forgot that I have some, until Bardot mentioned it.

I wore Vaniglia del Madagasca by i Profumi di Firenze to the dentist to have a small cavity filled. It went very quickly — topical numbing only; no anethesia; no pain while getting the filling; can rinse/drink/eat immediately. It started to ache a tiny bit after I left, but all-in-all, things went very well. Yay!

Happy for your good dental experience and glad it is over now! Phew. I hate dental-related things, so I go twice a year to make sure any issue is caught early/small. Geez, I think my blood pressure is elevated just typing about dental visits. Going to go bury my nose back in my Sikkim. I don’t wear it often because I find it rather cloying, but today, it seems lovely.

Just about to jump in the shower, but when I am out it will either be Zeste de Soleil, which has got to have some grapefruit in its DNA, or Jour d’Hermès – we’ll see.

Wearing Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit today. I wouldn’t say it’s very grapefruity, just a bit generic citrus, which is fine by me – grapefruit can get a little sweaty on me. I also put on some Thymes Agave Nectar hand lotion, which has notes of grapefruit. It is actually more grapefruity than the Lavanila! I highly recommend Thymes hand lotions – very moisturizing and not greasy. I was lucky enough to find The shower gel and hand cream at Marshall’s around Christmas – even got a few backups on clearance! Think I’ll have to order some of the perfume since it si so nice, too bad they didn’t have that there too!

I love Thymes! I’ve bought a lot from them. Frazier fir hand lotion, Naia body lotion, Eucalyptus perfume, Wild Angelica perfume, Rosemary sage body souffle and several others. Their products are great!

I did not know that Thymes made perfume! (although I am familiar with their hand creams) After perusing the site I am astonished at their offerings at reasonable prices! The Fig leaf & Cassis and Ginger MIlk as well as Lotus Santal piqued my interest but I am always so worried about blind buys…..

I’m wearing Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit. Grapefruit is one of those notes that can quickly turn “cat pee” on me, but this one works very nicely! Very light and fresh.

I always think of Moschino Funny! as my grapefruit-with-red-berries scent, but not even a slice of grape is mentioned in the notes *surprised*. So I checked through my collection, I have almost every aspect of citrus but a precious few with grapefruit. At last I managed to find my sample of Andy Tauer Vetiver Dance. It is very earthy and the grapefruit doesn’t help taking it into a direction I appreciate :).

Love these Friday community challenges! It’s fun to think of you guys all wafting similar waves of scent :D I went with Atelier Cologne’s Mistral Patchouli, after Robin pointed out earlier this week that it has a dominant grapefruit note. I’d tried my Jo Malone Grapefruit last night, but either it is beginning to turn, or its more bitter than I remember. Be well!

And what do you think — do you agree it’s primarily a grapefruit, or do you think I’m crazy?

Embarassingly yes, it is mostly grapefruit and (?) licorice (anise?) in the top and mid notes. The first time I smelled it and sent it to the purgatory bin, I was led by its name. I kept thinking about a pared down greenish patchouli and citrus, but did not think much beyond that. Maybe I’m being led by you now, but it’s been a more interesting arc.

I’ve enjoyed it, putting on more after work to review the experience. Last time, I may have scrubbed it, or oversprayed it. The drydown was salty skin musk, which was pleasant. It may lean a leeetle too masculine for me in the end, but there was plenty of grapefruit, and I wasn’t bored! :D

          Most definitely not boring!

For myself I enjoy thinking that fragrance isn’t gendered, but even so, I have to agree this one leans a bit masculine.

I would recommend Mistral Patchouli to anyone who likes an aromatic scent. The more I try it, the more I like it.

Laurence Dumont Vanille Pamplemousse. Cheap, cheerful, and gone in 30 minutes. I’m usually a cautious applier, but in the summer this one is fun to spray lavishly.

Hurray for Pamplelune! Glad to see so many other fans here :) This is way and beyond my favorite grapefruit. Today I layered it with some vetiver EO which gives it a deeper heft. I’v also paired it up with lavender before…

Robin, I own a number of DSH’s fragranced shea butter body creams, and they are very well scented and quite moisturizing. I wear them layered under their matching edp, or alone overnight or on weekends if I want more subtle scent. My favorites from her creams are Exotic Wood (Dawn’s fragrance that is very similar to DK Wenge…not sure it’s still listed on her site), Vanilla Bourbon Intense, and Special Formula X Extreme. They are very true to the fragrances, in my experience.

Alas, grapefruit goes very, very wrong on my skin, so I am ‘off the program’ this Friday, and wearing i smell great’s Wild Honey today.

Eau de pamplemousse rose. One of my favourites, I just wish it would last a little longer! It always reminds me of holidays as I when I am in transit in Dubai or Singapore from Australia to England I always used to visit the duty free shop and spray some of the tester on to make me feel a bit better about the next 12 hour leg of the flight!

This has nothing to do with grapefruit. but I just wanted to share it. I’m just home from a massage house call at a dear elderly client’s house. For the first time I used her upstairs bathroom and noticed a perfume shelf right next to my face as I was…ahem…seated. Talk about an Alice inWonderland moment! There were about three rows of ancient perfume bottles on the shelf and the two at the front were bottles of le galion Jasmine pure parfum. It took every ounce of self control not to start shifting the bottles to see what was in back, but from the bottles it looked like very vintage Guerlain and some Hermes. They were all stoppered bottles.

SOTD = Hermes Kelly Caleche Extrait

I love the EDP as is and this is a replica of it with a bigger sillage; however, it did not last quite as long. I may end up layering the EDP with the extrait. For the price to quality ratio, I would go for the EDP.

Atelier Mistral Patchouli today, what a shape shifter. I get a bit of grapefruity citrus, but then it seems like the star anise and geranium are jockeying for position, a bit of black pepper and incense tickle my nose, then it settles into a wonderful aromatic clarity. It is so interesting how the individual notes work together so seamlessly. I don’t often love anything with patchouli in the name, but right now I can’t stop sniffing my wrist. “Mistral” is a perfect description for this scent. It is a bit of perfumer’s magic.

I’m a big fan of grapefruit, and I have a lovely bottle of Italian grapefruit soda in my fridge right now. Yum!
Scent is Hermès Concentré de Pamplemousse Rose. It has much better lasting power than the Eau.

SOTD is Jour d’Hermes Absolu. I forewent the extra credit today in favor of sticking with my week’s theme of things I sampled or bought because of NST. Robin’s review of this one made me curious to try it, because I love Jour d’Hermes. Honestly, I don’t know if I could tell the difference between them without wearing one on each arm. The Absolu is a bit sharper, I think, and there’s more grapefruit in the drydown. Still quite nice, but doesn’t seem to improve on the original for me. Although I prefer Jd’H in hotter weather, so I should probably try the Absolu again this summer.
