Thursday scent of the day 2/5

Posted by Robin on 5 February 2015 170 Comments

nutella

Hey, it's World Nutella Day! Live it up. Meanwhile, what fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfums 06130 Yuzu Rouge.

Upcoming: we have two community projects this week. On Friday (2/6), we're celebrating National Grapefruit month. Wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.

Then on Sunday (2/8), we're celebrating this blog's 10th birthday: wear a fragrance you learned about on Now Smell This, whether from a review, another reader, a swap, anything.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

There is a bakery nearby that makes pain au nutella. If it stops raining, I might need to walk over and get one at lunch.

I am wearing Parfums d’Empire Yuzu Fou which is an excellent long lasting version of an eau de cologne (though sadly discontinued) with a bit of that slightly sweaty cedar scent in the background.

Yes, a lot of hyacinth. Which can go one of two directions on me, either spicy-floral or metallic. In BdS it’s metallic, and taken with the iris it’s a little like chewing on tinfoil, unfortunately. 🙁

Twins! I enjoy its simplicity! I tend to avoid very complex perfumes (e.g. anything by Vero Profumo) as it will distract my brain. My own comment males me think that I think about my perfumes rather than feel them.

I love Nutella. When I was a child we lived in Germany and I ate Nutella long before I ate peanut butter. I rediscovered it in the early 2000s when the stores in the my small town started stocking it. Still my favorite. SOTD is a Possets sample – Nevada Heat. This is a good one for a drizzly cold day, quite spicy. The descriptions mentions a “supersweet vanilla” and citrus but all I’m getting is the spice.

My son’s second favorite homemade ice cream is Nutella, which I make with Nutella brownies, which are the easiest thing in the world:

      1 1/4 cup (13 oz.) Nutella
      2 large eggs
1/2 cup flour (I’ve made w/ spelt & einkorn, both work fine)
      optional: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (I use a scant 1/4 t)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat an 8×8-inch (or 9×9) baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until smooth. Pour into prepared dish and smooth top with spatula.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Be careful not to over-bake, otherwise brownies will dry out. Let cool before cutting and serving.

Well, that’s ice cream! And his favorite is Vietnamese Coffee, made w/ sweetened condensed milk & plenty of cardamom. We don’t make it very often because of the caffeine, and we’ve tried making it decaf, but it’s not nearly as good. I can post that if you want it…

Floragal, it’s delicious and very rich, but I can’t eat it at night. Which makes it less useful, as ice cream, since that’s when I want ice cream 🙂

        • Robin says:
          5 February 2015 at 9:41 pm

Sun Mi, the original recipe was from Saveur:

          http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Vietnamese-Coffee-Ice-Cream

After trying several other recipes, I modified the Saveur recipe slightly to:

          1 cup heavy cream
          1 cup full fat milk
(or, use 2 cups half & half)
          5 egg yolks
          7-8 cardamom pods, freshly cracked
a few small chunks cinnamon bark

Everything else the same (the 1/2 t salt, the coffee and the can of condensed milk). You want a dark roast coffee — we use Trader Joes Back Bay for this.

The Saveur recipe does not have you cook the egg yolk /condensed milk mixture into a custard after you whisk in the hot cream, but I do put it back in the pan and cook it as you would with most custard-based ice creams (never even tried it their way, admittedly). Then I chill overnight and churn the next morning.

You can find another good Vietnamese coffee ice cream recipe at Serious Eats.

After two days w green spices I sweetened things up a bit with Chanel Egoïste. Goes well with the Swedish pastry “semla”, a cardamom bun with marzipan and whipped cream, traditionally eaten just before lent but nowadays it is available from about New year’s day :).

When they first came out I preferred La Traversee du Bosphore, but these days HV is my favourite out of these two. Although LTDB is gorgeous as well.

Mmm nutella. Now I wish I’d brought that instead of peanut butter for my apple this morning.

I’m trying out Jardins D’armide by Oriza L. Legrand. It’s got a whopping punch of powder, but once it settles down it’s not too bad. I get the distinct impression that this perfume would be the love-child of vintage No 5 and L’heure Bleu. There’s the powder and soapy florals of No 5, but there’s a distinct spicy floral (carnation) and mixed with the honey really gives me a L’heure Bleu vibe. I think I like it?

My mother actually just informed me it was World Nutella Day. Unfortunately, I don’t have any stashed in my desk at work (which actually wouldn’t be a bad idea).

Does anyone else have troubles picking a fragrance to wear with certain colors?

I’m wearing a blue shirt today, and *always* have trouble picking a scent that doesn’t somehow clash with blue. Wearing Heely Cardinal because I swear, that’s the only thing I can ever come up with that works.

I always like something “modern” and aldehydic with pink, or a citrus or I’ll put on a ridiculous hyper-feminine sweet fragrance to play up the look.

I don’t wear blue very often but when I do, I think of blue as being cool, calm, collected and ladylike. I like to wear Bvlgari Blv then, it has all those characteristics but enough spice to give it a bit of zing and keep it from being boring.

SOTD Amouage Opus III. I really really want a bottle of this but really really dont want to hand over that much cash. Even to fragrancenet for a far more reasonable price. Stopped in at a niche perfume shop on the way to work today as they’re having a sale, and doused myself in this because I love it. I may have over-applied as the guys at work commented on my fragrant force-field. Oopsies! *I* enjoyed it anyway!! 🙂

There are parts of the base of Ta’if and Woman that do smell similar. I get that a bit too. But then, to my nose, Ta’if takes off and keeps going in a different direction. Both are lovely.

I think Miss Dior (the original stuff, of whatever year of production) might be an acquired taste for many people. I like it, but it took a couple of wearings and some humidity in the air for it not to shiv me in the eye.

I’m wearing Un Jardin en Mediterranee today. I really like it when it’s chilly out. Not sure what I’m going to do for tomorrow. I was looking at my stuff and realized that I don’t have anything with grapefruit. I’m not a citrus-centric perfume person, but I like grapefruit, so it’s weird to me that I don’t have anything with that note.

After a reasonably careful review of my collections and notes (via fragrantica searches), I can see that the only frag I have with grapefruit is a LD of Un Jardin sur le Nil. So…. apparently I like every other kind of citrus there is but grapefruit in my frags! I’m just going to default to a spicy winter frag with some citrus accords.

SOTD is RL Safari b/c I needed something warm and green to make me think of anything besides bitterly cold wind.

We keep Nutella in the house all the time for quick chocolate fixes. Sometimes just a dab off a spoon will do the trick. But my hubbie devised a quick and tastey snack – he takes a plain flour tortilla and spreads on either some peanut butter OR some cream cheese and then Nutella and rolls it up. It is a remarkably quick and good snack, and you can pack it up quick to take to work. My fav is the cream cheese and Nutella which tastes a lot like some sort of chocolately cheese cake type thing. But I’m t hinking I need to try your Nutella brownie recipe from above!

I love Yuzu Rouge and have a bottle of it. Very refreshing in the summer. Yuzu Fou I haven’t tried, though I probably have a sample of it somewhere.

Today I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes and am really enjoying it. I think I’ll wear it again tomorrow for a long flight, as it doesn’t have huge projection, but I can smell it and the lasting power is good. I haven’t worn this one in awhile, as I don’t remember liking it this much. Perhaps absence made the heart grow fonder!

Bitter cold today but bright sunshine and no snow, yay! I needed some of that yellow goodness in my scent today and chose C.O. Bigelow Winter Lemon No. 1821 (now called Lemon Leaf) as my SOTD. The lemon is fresh and effervescent but creaminess and warmth is added by underlying notes of fig, black currant, and a bit of musk, rose and sandalwood. And I’m wearing a yellow turtleneck, too!

So not so much a SOTD but a retelling of my un-scientific experiment last night. I went out with 6 friends who I’ve known for over a decade. 3 guys, 3 women and myself. I wore In Fiore Oud Amber Attar and it was a complete gender divide. All 3 women hated it, too strong, too fecal (they used another word LOL) and just too much. They went on and on about liking flower scents, light, clean soap/laundry. To a man, all the guys LOVED it! They didn’t always express it in NST terms, but they got it. One guy summed it up perfectly, “You smell like you just had sex”. It was very interesting their comments and even more interesting to watch the women try and change their minds! I was like, pay attention! Guys don’t want soap, they want SEX. They don’t want you to smell like a brown sugar pop-tart, they want SEX. Not delicate white florals, Sex. LOL, it made for a very interesting conversation and night.

I saw the new fragrance announcement here, read the words “Francis Kurkdjian” and “orange blossom,” and an obsession was born. I think it’s only the sweet, grape-y version of the OB that isn’t working for me. If you like that iteration of OB, and Thierry Mugler Alien, you might love this.
