Wednesday scent of the day 1/7

Posted by Robin on 7 January 2015 149 Comments

Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts

It's Wednesday, and winter has begun in earnest where I live. It's darned cold. What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Hermès Brin de Réglisse and for double the licorice, I'm drinking a nice warm cup of Kusmi Tsarevna tea.

Reminder: this Friday, 1/9, is Foody Friday: wear a gourmand or foody fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s unreasonably hot here, and I’m wearing lovely and surprisingly long lasting Ananas Fizz.

Me too. I’d be in Florida, or South California. I know it’s nothing, but Parisian winter was already too much for my Latin American complexion.

I am in the US icebox right now, Minnesota, where it is 6 degrees BELOW zero, not counting windchill. School was cancelled today because of dangerous cold. We have a saying “It weeds out the weak”. LOL But no one is happy right now. To keep warm I am wearing Volutes and drinking a cup of Kusmi Violet tea and counting the hours before I can switch to Hot Buttered Rum!

Not me! While I can’t say I ‘enjoy’ extremely cold weather, I absolutely ‘hate’ extremely hot weather. I’m an outside-loving person, so even when it’s really cold, I can still go outdoors briefly by adding as many layers as necessary. But when it’s really hot, there’s only so many layers of clothing one can remove and I can’t bear to be outdoors at all.

Sort of ditto! I live in a temperate zone, so no extreme cold. But I do cope much better with cold weather. My skin doesn’t like too much sunshine.

Im onto fragrance #4 for the day!
    Early morning walk was Calyx.
By the time i returned it was already quite hot, so post-shower was Jour D’Hermes.
Went to see Penguins of Madagascar that a friend wanted to see this evening, and wore Mito VdE
and now it’s bedtime, and it’s JHAG Midnight Oud, which is one of my favourite bedtime scents.

If I’m in the right mood and wear a frag or more than doesn’t really last, I can get 3+ in a day too. Or even ones that layer well together.

I’ve layered a couple perfumes and even worn two perfumes in a day with a similar base note (iris), but 3 or 4 distinctly different ones? I’m having a hard time digesting that. I WISH I could do that, but I can’t wear overnight perfumes b/c my fiance doesn’t like smelling them in bed. I also don’t feel like I have enough time in the day to wear many.

          • AnnS says:
            7 January 2015 at 4:41 pm

Oh – I’ve never layered 3 or 4, but I’ve worn 3 or 4 during the course of a day! Usually I’ll just layer 2. I like opposites: like a rose on the neck and a green on the arms, etc.

    • Merlin says:

I have a bottle of Bois d’Oud and Oud Imperial, and had samples of a couple others that I gave to my sister (Ambre Gris and Musc something-or-other).
I am one of those people that really likes oud, and this Oud Imperial is a skanky one for sure, but after an hour or so of calming down is wonderful.

My favorite is probably Violette and/or Traktir. Really like Tsarevna though.

Perthgirl, it is not a bargain brand, and I think they recently raised their prices in the US — the small tins here are between $17 and $20 now. I have an easier time splurging on tea than perfume.

It’s SO ridiculously good.

I don’t suppose that you’ve recently bathed in or moisturized with something that might turn the topnotes weird? I’ve had occasional strange interactions with new shower gels.

Have also had the problem with the first couple of spritzes of a scent I haven’t sprayed in some time smelling funky, with it going back to normal once the exposed-to-air bit is cleared out of the spritzer.

Or it could just be you – taste or skin. ;)

I think it is the bottle: the last couple of times I wore It I thought there was something just a bit off about it, but this time it really struck me, and it was really not pleasant. The bottle is almost 15 years old and half full, so I guess it’s come to the end of its useful life.

I finally got around to trying my sample of Brin de Réglisse a weekend or two ago. I really liked it, despite being not that fond of licorice. Love the lavender! But, I feel like it would be SO much better sprayed lavishly than dabbed from a small sample…

Fantastic show. It’s ending soon, so if you are in the Boston area and interested, try to get over there to see it. I have a new appreciation for Goya’s wit and humanity. He documented the craziness of his time (the French invasion, the inquisition, the horrors of war, vanity, aging, bullfights, etc) As well as gratitude and redemption. Plus, he seems to have been a lover of kitty cats, they are in a bunch of his works.

My SOTD is Vanille Intense by PdN. Very sweet and a bit trashy, but in a good way. I can’t wear very sweet scent on Friday because of my schedule so I’m getting my gourmand-sweet fix where I can.

“Trashy in a good way.” Sometimes I really like that, you know? And sometimes it’s just trashy. The worst is when I think it’ll be in a good way, and it turns out the other way. (Vamp a NY comes to mind.)

Funnily enough I don’t find Vamp trashy at all. Lighthearted, cheerful and fun. Very Giacobetti. Perceptions differ a lot though ;)

Wearing a BPAL perfume oil sample today, Hecate. It’s a linear, slightly flat scent but I find it rather comforting. Its a fuzzy musk and myrrh blanket with a strong undercurrent of bitter almond.

Licorice is one of my favorite candies, and I especially love Allsorts -great tin! Actually, I’m not sure I’ve met a candy I do not like ;)
Lately I’ve been on a jelly bean kick.

Brin de Réglisse is lovely, and I’ve got a good stash of it, but I hate that it is so fleeting. Spray in the morning and its gone by late morning.

SOTD for me is Armani Privé Rose d’Arabie, a nice rose & incense scent, although I think its oud not incense that’s listed in the notes. It’s a sample and that’s all I really need of this one.

I forgot to put anything on before work, but I’m thinking of spraying something cozy for the rest of the night. Maybe something along the lines of SL Santal Majuscule…

So excited about the individual FM spays – I’m getting Carnal Flower as soon as I get paid, 10ml is exactly how much I need!

Memoir is so wonderful in the cold weather! My joints need some serious hot soak to loosen up too. Tonight, when I get off work, our wind chill is supposed to be -25 F!! I am not looking forward to this. I am so glad this is only supposed to last for less than 24 hours. Ugh.

That’s what I do like very much about BV too – you can get kind of all spritzy b/c it’s reasonably sheer. Most of my orientals and woods are one spray only or tiny dabs. I think this morning I actually did 6!!

Most of them last a lot less than an hour on me, although there are exceptions— Incense and Amber just keep going. But I like that they’re so short-lived: sometimes i put on three or four in the course of an afternoon.

I love their Honeysuckle! It is just like when you walk by some blooming nearby and get a glorious waft :) But, yeah, it doesn’t last long on me either. At least they are reasonable affordable so you don’t feel bad about reapplying as needed!

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

It’s so nice and fluffy yet stands on its own in this ridiculously cold and windy day.

When I have a few minutes here and there when I’m home, the great spring cleaning in winter continues. On the books front, I am up to 460 books donated and the DVD list is growing (so far only 7 but I haven’t focused on DVDs yet). In the process of this cleaning, I unearthed a long forgotten box of perfumes! I had been indulging myself with perfumes before I officially annointed myself a perfumista. I even found my long lost Burberry Baby rocking bottle and I just read the label and it states “no alcohol” — I’ll have to try it again to make sure it is worth “saving”. I found quite a few EL minis (hello freebiemeet) as well as a mini of B&BW Sensual Amber and it still smells pretty darn good through the sprayer.

P.S. My I-DON’T-KNOW-WHAT-I-WAS-THINKING bottle of Paris Hilton (Paris Hilton!) is in the donation pile.

I went with ELdO Bijou Romantique today. Going gourmand(ish) a little early. I’m excited to see that Malle is now offering the travel sprays individually. Makes them more tempting now that they are attainable without doing a split (which might not really be a good thing from my bank account’s perspective.. lol). I might have to get a travel spray of Iris Poudre after I use up my mini, which isn’t far off, I think.

Bitter cold today with a high of 0° degrees and windchills in the mid -20’s with record-breaking cold tonight, but I’m winter camping today! There’s nothing as invigorating as a trek through a snow-covered forest, with the amber sun streaming through the pines and their fragrance scenting the air. And then settling down in front of a blazing campfire for a night under the stars. How lucky I am, though, to be enjoying all this indoors, with my SSS Winter Woods and SSS Fireside Intense as my ‘camping’ companions today.

Are those big eyes because i’m wearing both SSS scents together, or because I’m winter camping (but you did read that I was winter camping ‘indoors’, I hope!). I have tent-camped some nights when the temps have been in tbe 20’s and it has snowed but once November arrives the camping gear is tucked away until April and we stick to the The Great Indoors except for an occasional winter hike through the nearby woods.

L’Air de Rien today. Turns out the 20mph winds are out and 40mph with up to 60 gusts are in so…uncovering all my plants and hauling most of them into the house. Am very grumpy but great smelling. Hate having to make snap decisions about where the plant hooks should go but can’t possible get them all in without hanging the largest Hoyas and cacti (which were already in the house taking up space)

I know what you mean about the houseplants. I have many, and even though some look near death indoors after our long winters, they summer outdoors until mid-September and remarkably rejuvenate even though I pretty much ignore them. We came home this fall after a week’s trip and had to lug them indoors before we even unpacked the car because the weather had changed so unexpectedly. Didn’t even have time to clean them off like we usually do, so who knows what’s lurking inside them this winter . . .

Well as I was leaving the house, I put on some Ineke Angel’s Trumpet. Then I saw that some mail had come and it was 2 scented packages – a VCA collection extraordinaire sampler from ebay and my very first swap (swapped LPRN for L’Artisans Vanille Absolument – hope I like it!). I immediately tried the VCA Orchidee Vanille (lovely!). But then I didn’t want to confuse the 2 vanillas so I instead am trying some Sacrebleu (which came as a sample in my swap). What an exciting and fragrant day! And I just got notice that my STC order shipped. Whoopeeeeeeee!

SOTD was Oriza L. Legrand Relique d’Amour, very interesting and also easy to wear despite notes (musty incense, pepper) that I sometimes find challenging. Light enough, though, that I’m not sure it’s going on my wish list. Now I’m thinking of putting on some Natori–I only have a mini, and I guess I need to make up my mind about a FB.
