Tuesday scent of the day 12/9

Posted by Robin on 9 December 2014 157 Comments

Dior Secret Garden campaign

Happy Tuesday! What's your fragrance today?

I have lost the box that holds all of my Chanel and Dior samples. I have a vague suspicion that it went out in the last pile of stuff I sent off to Goodwill. So in my mind I am wearing a precious drop of vintage Diorama, but in reality I am wearing a precious drop of vintage Diorissimo. Not a bad consolation, as these things go, right?

Reminder: this Friday, 12/12, wear something from Christian Dior. On 12/19, we'll do De-stress Friday...as we approach the holidays, wear something that keeps you tranquil and relaxed.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Bond no.9 Chinatown! This fragrance just makes me smile :)
(I always feel that it has a “Lush shop” vibe. Does anybody else feel the same..?)

Interesting…because of the scent or the construction? I think of the Bonds as so much smoother & more synthetic than Lush.

It is definitely smoother I agree.
I think it’s the creamy and sweet floral that reminds me of the bath bomb/soap section where the melange of floral scents and gourmands happen (Honey I Washed the Kids soap. This is definitely one that I can detect in Chinatown.)

Happy888Cat, you smell fantastic. Chinatown is one of my all time favorite perfumes ever, and one of the first niche frags I fell in love with and bought without hesitation. I even bought that sparkly crystallized bottle. lol I’ve gone through two bottles now and really need to get a third. Being without it is like missing an essential part of my perfume diet. ;)

Vintage Dior samples to Goodwill?! That would be a bummer (though not for whoever finds them I guess)

I’m wearing Dior Dolce Vita, the older version.

Ditto..donated quite a few samples to a friend, she was like, ya, that’s nice…in a not really into this perfume stuff type of way..Like ‘ya, nice…I check those out from time to time.’ Like I just see them collecting dust in her bathroom somewhere.

I guess I wait and give samples to friends when they say they really like something and can’t afford to buy a FB. If I have a sample, I give it to them. That way, I know they appreciate it.

Or they’ve been thrown out, I don’t know. Trying to be philosophical about it but feeling kind of sick at the moment. In terms of reference (being able to compare things when writing reviews) it’s sort of worse to have lost all the modern Diors & Chanels.

I will hold out hope! It wasn’t like you put open boxes out for Goodwill, right? So I feel like you probably would have noticed if you’d accidentally put out a perfume box as you were packing them up, etc.?

But if you don’t find them, do say so, as I would be happy to send you my doubles! For science :)

We do put out open boxes though…I had a bunch of big boxes and a bunch of green trash bags & got it all together (in my office!! big mistake) and then my husband dumped it on the front porch and they picked it up. So come to think of it, not Goodwill but Salvation Army because Goodwill does not pick up here. The box they were in was small and would have been easy to lose inside a bigger cardboard box, and I’m sorry to say my office is a disaster zone and not a safe place for anything.

          And thank you, that’s kind.

Well hopefully someone will be in for a great surprise Robin.
I’m wearing Arabie – I actually thought it was my sample of Ambre Russe I was spraying as I hadn’t gotten around to labelling them yet. But no it is definitely Arabie – it’s like a spicy, fruity gourmand that I think is actually a pretty good Xmas perfume.

Okay. Now you are torturing yourself!

A young volunteer is combing through donations and stumbles on your samples. Before s/he realizes it the volunteer has been transported by each delectable fragrance–opening one at a time, careful not to spill anything. What a curiosity the volunteer thinks? Who would give away such a treasure? And the volunteer gently transfers the samples into his/her bag to savor later at home!

Oh Robin, I am so sorry about your samples–a similar thing just happened to me. I donated a load of stuff to Goodwill before I moved and I just discovered that my brand-new ski boots are gone. I remember lifting the boot bag into the car and thinking how heavy it was and I think I must have put the new boots with the old ones in the bag, and then I donated the old bag with both pairs inside…Well, the tax deduction for the donation will be increased considerably.

Today I am wearing Muscs Kublai Khan. This and Slumberhouse Norne are my Christmas scents. MKK to me smells like a manger, with the sweat of the surrounding shepherds and the fur of the animals.

I hope your samples turn up, Robin. Probably the moment you stop looking for them, there they’ll be.

I’m wearing Rasasi Arba Wardat, a wonderfully spicy and fruity rose with monster sillage. It requires careful application, but is so invigorating and smells so much more expensive than it is.

Quick question for anyone who wants to contribute. Lush has just opened a shop not too far from me and of course, given all the buzz about Rose Jam, I’m going to check it out. What else should I be sure to investigate while there? I’m already hoping to find some Lust since I love jasmine, but am curious what other products are worth giving a go since I’ve never tried the brand. Thanks!

I love Rose Jam, but I am surprised that so many perfumistas like it. Most folks around here don’t like very sweet things. I think it’s very sweet and I have a fairly high tolerance for sweetness :-)

Kevin hated it, thought it was way too sweet, plus he thought the rose was MIA.

I love it, but I am not convinced I’d like it as a perfume. For a shower gel, it’s perfect. Love how concentrated it is, and it’s so bright and cheerful, which many sweet things are not. I have found a few of their other sweet shower gels overwhelming. One in particular made me feel queasy, like I’d eaten too many pancakes with syrup.

          • kindcrow says:

Aside from Rose Jam (which I love), I’m also a fan of Karma-scented products (depending on how you feel about patchouli). I’ll also add another vote for massage bars! I have Wiccy Magic Muscles, and I think it smells great (like holiday spices).

Give the Godiva shampoo bar a sniff too for another jasmine! Ultimately I’ve used it as a bar of soap rather than shampoo, as I felt like it dried out my hair but the lather is very nice and the scent’s a delight–it’s almost like a Lust body product, and just as richly perfumed. Just having the bar in my shower works as a scent-diffuser for my bathroom! Has lasted for months, too.

Things I haven’t purchased yet but have my eye on: the Hottie massage bar (really nice texture, scent is gourmand without being cloying, I thought) and the Snowcake soap (struck me as a bit pricey but the creamy marzipan might be worth it.)

Have fun! Great time to buy Lust, I’m actually sorta eager to finish the solid I have because the new packaging is so adorable.

I second the Flying Fox and Happy Happy Joy Joy recommendations. I am also a fan of the Grass shower gel. Another favorite of mine is Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner. It smells just like the Rose Jam shower gel, and you’re supposed to use it in the shower and rinse it off, but I find that it’s fine to use like a regular lotion if your skin’s really dry.

Wow. That Rasasi Arba Wardat bottle looks like something out of a sci-fi/ fantasy movie … something with enough power to open a black hole or something.

At Lush, if you like something that’s seasonal, you might want to get it now. Who knows if it will ever return? I like Rose Jam and So White.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I’m going to bookmark this discussion so I can give it a browse in the shop. The sheer number of offerings on the site was overwhelming so I thought I’d get a ‘greatest hits’ sampling here instead. :)

And yes, the Rasasi bottles are anything but simple and streamlined. And they’re awfully heavy, but there’s something about dabbing on perfume oil with a glass wand. So sensual and enchanting…

Antidote by Viktor & Rolf. It never seemed to get much love and I think it’s now discontinued. I’ve always liked its oddball herbal, lavender vanillaryness. Got a back up bottle squirrelled away somewhere so I’m all right for a few years yet.

I think I’ve posted a couple of times, but I’m a long-time lurker in any case. I got back into perfume a few years ago after giving it up some time in the 90’s. Too many big scents were triggering allergies and I was an impoverished grad. student at the time, so it seemed prudent, but I’ve returned to my hedonistic ways at last.

Robin, I love your blog! Sorry about your samples.

Don’t know what happened to the rest of my comment. SOTD is Bois des Iles parfume extrait. I have a bit left from a sample I’ve been hoarding; and as today is gray and cold with icy rain that will put a slippery glaze on the snow, I feel I need it (I’m in Maine).

Still scentless this AM, but contemplating my three new Aftelier minis–Cuir de Gardenia, Wild Roses, and Lumiere…. I’ve been on an incense role this fall, so will probably go for the Wild Roses.

Cuir de Gardenia’s so luxurious and I ended up loving it even though I’m not usually a fan of white flowers (my cat was pretty into it, too). I’ve been on an incense kick, too, though, and it doesn’t sound like you can go wrong with any of your options!

So sorry about your samples. Why can’t we ever lose samples of Brittany Spears or JLo scents? It’s always the good ones that leave us. Hopefully, some underpaid, overworked Goodwill employee found them and is having the perfume experience of a lifetime – something she’d never have had the chance to know without you. Every woman among us, no matter how humble in status, should have the chance to experience a truly magnificent perfume. Maybe, just maybe, you’ve given someone that chance.

I’m wearing Silences by Jacomo today for no reason other than I like it.

“It’s always the good ones that leave us.” So true. I like how we all feel Robin’s loss so keenly, and the best thing that any of us can say is, “may they fall into deserving hands.” I like to envision them getting picked up as stocking stuffers and put into a ‘tween stocking. Just think Robin, you might have created a new perfumista, and led her straight from mall frags into the Chanel promised land.

Oh how terrible. I tossed out a restaurant gift card inside a birthday card a few months ago. I feel bad more for the giver of the card, that their money was wasted. Of course, that is quite replaceable – your samples are not. Hoping they turn up.

Wearing Lostmarch Lann-Ael today. I smell like a bowl of Apple Jacks! If it was more bread and less apple, I’d have a bottle of this. Just realized I had a nice sized decant, so gave myself a few extra spritzes.

Not to mention all the small balances that never get used. How many gift cards are floating out there with $2.36 left on them or somesuch that will never ever get used? That’s why I now only give cash money instead of gift cards.

Needed a little sunshine & summertime in my day today so I went with PdN’s Juste Un Reve. Totally has helped the dreary, cold, yuck of a day we have in NYC.

I also finally bought a bottle of Rose Jam shower gel and have been loving it! What a delicious sweet and tart scent. I can definetly see myself upgrade from the small to the large bottle in no time. Highly recommend!

Didn’t know there was a perfume too! Really?
I didn’t see that in the store but I wasn’t really looking.

They’re very generous with samples so you can always ask for a sample before you buy. They gave me one of the snow fairy shower gel – bubblegum & vanilla, which is a bit over the top for me.

Have you looked under the fridge, R? That’s my first port of call when I mislay something, as that’s where my cat hides stuff she steals from me. The other day, I managed to retrieve a sample that had fallen out of my ‘perfume drawer’ and been promptly appropriated by the furry menace. Admittedly, a whole box would be a bit of a challenge, but… ;-)

I figure..some person probably would have been happy to see a 20 right there. I left my purse at the same store once…outside in a cart…someone actually turned it in to lost and found. Cold and dreary again today, with rain and wet snow in the mix. Yesterday’s Orange & Amande was so uplifting and comforting I’m wearing it again today, but will top it off later with Hermes Elixir des Merveilles for a Christmas party tonight. I like and enjoy Theorema, but the Elixir is my cold-weather orange of choice: a lovely balance between the orange, spices (subtle), resins and woods. I like how it borders being woody/oriental and slightly gourmand, but the sweetness never veers too far and is cut by the cedar, one of my favorite woody notes. And I like how it still smells ‘Merveilles!’ I am not one much for flankers but I do love all of the Merveilles line. If I had to choose one scent for all four seasons, I could probably be very content with the Eau, L’Ambre, Elixir and Claire – I love them all!

Robin, sure hope you find those samples, how very frustrating!

I told her that I have already bought some perfumes there and I had some questions, she ignored me and then when I asked if Coromandel comes in extrait, she told me that it will come very soon, now I am not sure about this info, does anyone know if this is true. Thanks for listening.

Adding to the chorus of good vibes about recovering your samples! I would totally be hitting up the local shops in desperation heh.

I blind bought a bottle of Tocade that arrived today. It is over-the-top pretty and friendly and I can’t help being kind of in love even knowing a few people are exchanging side-eye over the obviousness of it all.

I always thought Tocade was like that really super-friendly sorority girl who gets flirty and clingy when she’s drunk… everybody rolls their eyes except the delighted guy she’s draped herself over.

I don’t wear mine much anymore… don’t know whether my bottle has deteriorated or whether what’s in the sprayer has gone bad and it would be fine if I just cleared it out, but it is extremely smoky. Yes, SMOKY. Like the remains of a campfire.

      • applebite says:
        9 December 2014 at 6:14 pm

ha! We don’t really do sororities here in Canada but the rest of this might ring true to being 20 ;)

Smoky! Very random. And sad. I never considered clearing out the perfumer in the sprayer might mean the rest of the perfume is okay – going to try this with my old bottles of Tresor, though I suspect the heat and light has done them in. I haven’t smelled it fresh in forever but Tresor could probably be Tocade’s equally over the top cousin.

Man, I like to think I’m big into orientals and things that very heavily unisex but I need to admit to myself that sometimes I just need to go girlie girl frou frou city. ;)

Robin, I’m imagining that mischievous elves (smaller, cuter versions of the Dior man bots) have rolled your samples into their elf burrow and after having their way with them, will be returning your samples soon. But if they are really gone, sorry that happened.

The Amouage Lyric was delivered tonight. Jacomo 8 had to step aside for now. All I can say is OMFGoddess! That’s one big bootie woman’s perfume! Now I will become even more insufferably picky with that one setting the Standard. On me, it’s almost obscenely creamy, in a good way. And it keeps morphing and developing on my skin. beautiful.

Wearing Nuits de Hadrien today as I putter around the new house waiting for our mattress. I’m truly over sleeping on sofas and getting a bit annoyed that nobody has knocked on my door yet with a bed. I didn’t leave the house today and, in fact, stayed in town to receive this delivery.
I guess it’s just as well I was stuck here as the grill got washed (yick) and put back together and I found the hornets nest I knew was in the yard and put an end to them. Also found poison ivy heaven which will have to be dealt with. At least I smell good and all my perfumes seem to have moved safely.

At last! This girl has discovered not one but two Serge Luten’s that she can wear! The beautiful Gris Clair which is like culinary lavender versus aromatic lavender to my nose with its huge dose of vanilla/tonka in the base. It’s like lavender ice cream! Encens et Lavande is also lovely and is richly lavender and incense, almost a baroque fougere, complex and luxurious.

Adding one more…I waited about 2 years or so for a bottle of fume I wanted to get to show up somewhere. I find one, buy it…go to set it on the counter..I miss, dropped and broke..I didn’t want to go through all the glass to keep any fume. It was a LE scent..a cheaper one..but nonetheless. After smelling it all over the place I decided I didn’t like it anymore afterall. LOL.
