Happy Tuesday! What's your scent of the day?
I'm commando, again. Still feeling a bit under the weather, but I think I will be fine tomorrow.
Reminder: this Friday, 11/28 (Black Friday!) will be Cheap Thrills Friday. Wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
SOTD: Fou d’Absinthe (L’Artisan Parfumeur). Hope you feel better!
I’m getting there! You smell great. I always forget to wear that one.
Fresh Sake here — getting started on the cheap thrills.
Nice!
Wearing JLo Still, since I will be in meeting all day. I could have kept this one for Friday, itwas a bargain. Also could have worn it last Friday, since it was a blind buy as well. Have others to choose from, though, so I won’t be missing out.
Hope y’all have a productive, pleasant Tuesday!
Cheap blind buy — even better.
SotD: Chanel, no.5 edp 🙂
Get well soon !
I’m almost there, thanks!
Hope you get to wear something tomorrow Robin!
Question for Friday: is the goal scents that retail under $50?
I know there is lots of freedom and interpretation (which makes it fun!) i am just curious 🙂
As always everyone can interpret as they like, but the goal is to help others find decent cheap thrills — so preferably something that retails for under $50, or that is sold for under $50 in a place online, or …?
The idea being it doesn’t really help anyone else find a cheap thrill if it’s an incredible bargain you found that someone else couldn’t buy at the same price.
Great! This helps – thanks.
Glad you are feeling better, Robin, and I hope you continue to improve. My son is now sick, we’re hoping it doesn’t interfere with our Thanksgiving plans.
I am at work today, wearing one of my favorite office scents: Prada Infusion d’Iris (layered today with a dab or two of Chanel No. 19 parfum).
Oh dear. Does seem like there’s lots of crud going around. Hope he is better by Thursday…
Thanks, he’s home from school today resting so we will just hope for the best!
Starting my Cheap Thrills week early with trusty Old Spice, which is all about the carnations. Nothing modern about it: just pure timeless awesomeness.
I love Old Spice! I was recently clearing out the cupboards and found an old bottle of my boyfriend’s … maybe I will wear it sometime 😉
You absolutely should. Allow me to quote Susan Irvine: “Once I did a blind test of fragrances with perfumers and women whose business involved smell. Nearly all agreed on one heavenly potion as the most expensive, feminine, sexy, sophisticated. In short, their favourite. When they took off their blindfolds, they saw it was — Old Spice. The less is: use your nose, not your eyes when choosing a scent.” Good advice for all of us!
You smell great!
I’m a woman and I would wear Old Spice if I weren’t allergic to it … another one that burns on contact 🙁 I can wear Royall Spyce, and I love it. My husband likes it on me, too.
My response was for Pyramus, but if you wear it, RP, you will smell great, too!
Yum.
Old Spice is wonderful. I notice that it doesn’t smell nearly as good as it used to in the 70s, when we were buying my dad a gift set every Christmas! But still better than a lot of stuff out there.
Feel better soon 🙂
SOTD is YSL Paris. It turned chilly here, and today was a good day to put this one on.
Such a great scent.
Paris is part of my regular spring rotation, and I usually put it away when the winter comes. But now I’ll have to see how it does in the cold!
My all time favourite! You smell wonderful.
Love Paris, especially this time of year. Tempers the “bigness” a bit.
Since we did the blind buy last Friday, I have been wearing my favorite blind buy since then. Ciel Amouage.
To me-I smell so feminine.
Feel better Robin. My grandma use to make tea and whiskey when she wasn’t feeling well..and would curl up with a good book and pass out. 🙂
LOL! Excellent. And that’s exactly what I plan to do when I’m a grandma, by which time someone else hopefully will clean the house and cook the Thanksgiving dinner.
I’m all decked out in Rose Jam shower products today and had a very hard time picking a fragrance to go with it. I ended up going with Safran Troublant, but realized I don’t have many rose fragrances OR many sweet/joyful fragrances. After binging on mostly serious-faced incenses for the past few months, I think I’m ready for some happy scents for the holidays.
I cannot over recommend Neela Vermiere’s coffret for batch of joyous scents–and I think all of them would complement Rose Jam shower gel!
Coincidentally, I looked up Bombay Bling this morning because I remember it being described as joyful and thought it might fit the bill (and because it’s got such a great name). It must be a sign!
On Monday, I layered Rose Jam shower gel with the Ro’s Argan body conditioner and topped it off with Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose & Oud scent. It was lovely! Even my friend who HATES rose scented anything told me she thought I smelled great! I knew I had “done good” when she doled out that unexpected compliment!’
Rainey, dismal, chore laden day. Added some gorgeous dark patchouli essential oil to my moisturizer. All is good. Perhaps a cuppa lavender tea?
I love lavender tea…perfect for a dismal day.
SOTD Jardins de Bagatelle, probably my favorite Geurlain scent. Lost power at my house in the wind storm last night – the power co website says estimate time of restoration is Wednesday evening!
Happy I was not planning on hosting Thanksgiving at my house this year.
That’s so long! Hope you haven’t got precious supplies in the freezer that’ll ruin by then 🙁
Oh thanks for the concern, but our PowerLine runs through miles of more or less untended state forest land, and we loose power about every other month for some period of time. We have a gas generator. We run it an hour in the mornings and a few hours in the evenings, and it is a hassle, but not a catastrophe. I rather like having no power on at night – so much quieter in the house….
To have one of those rare “reading the recipe and eating the dish at the same time moments,” I drained my sample of Knot this morning before reading Angela’s review…. so Knot it is. Sadly for me, its Knot to be…
Haha…good one!
Awww! Too bad. I thought about wearing it today since Angela reviewed it yesterday. I guess Knot is one of those fragrances you either really like or really don’t.
I really wanted to like Knot, but I think it smells like a cleaning product I have used in the past. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I’m afraid it might be a toilet cleaner!
Hope you are better soon! My SOTD is Dries van Noten by Frederic Malle. I got a sample – this is my first time trying it. It’s pretty, subtle, and creamy. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first, but mostly because I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like. It felt like I chose the wrong fragrance for today, I was kind of wishing I had picked something like Mille et Une Roses. However, it is growing on me. It has a slightly powdery dry down that reminds me of what I like about Infusion d’Iris.
I wish I had a bottle. Won’t probably ever pay the price, though.
Hot here today, with storms due later. It’s my day off, so Carnal Flower today at home, and tonight I went to a friends Tupperware party, where I wore both Jour d’Hermes and Aeroguard. 🙂
Sotd is Paco Rabanne La Nuit edp. I wasn’t sure what I was in the mood for and it covers several categories to my nose.
Get well soon, Robin.
Oh, I love that one. You smell really good!
Goutal’s Hadrien Absolu (the edp version of Eau d’Hadrien). I smell like a lemon grove today.
Get better, Robin!
I’m wearing Tokyo Milk Bulletproof, but should be going commando too, with my sinuses completely blocked as they are.
Tokyo Milk is great for cheap thrills. Hopefully you’ll soon be able to smell youraelf!
I tried out their Dark Tainted Love last night, to see if I wanted to wear it for cheap thrills day. Ugh! It was awful. WAAAAAAY too sweet. I swear there was a Hawaiian Punch accord in there (maybe the orchids?) before the vanilla kicked in. Not only will I not be wearing it for cheap thrills, it goes into the freebie meet pile.
I am wearing Korrigan today. It’s a nice smell for a cold and maybe snowy day.
Get well soon!!
Maybe give this a try:
When ever I feel slightly down with something, I go for Origin’s Ginger body product line. I use the scrub, shower gel and cream. It just warms me right up and makes me feel my body is “banishing” the bad stuff that much faster. 🙂 After the routine just snuggle up on your couch with a warm mug of tea (add a slice of ginger or lemon with a swirl of honey – antioxidant!!) and heal!
Years ago I wore the perfume from that line. I recently tried to find it at the Origins counter – wanted to takes sniff for memory sake, but couldn’t find it. I just looked and see it’s online – will have to look more closely next time at the store. I do remember loving it!
I’ve always been curious to smell this product line, but haven’t been able to find it locally. Is it a strait up ginger scent or more sweet or citrus with ginger accents? Every year when the Origins bag comes out for Black Friday, I’m tempted to just give it a go but always talk some sense into myself. 😉
I haven’t worn it on so long that it’s difficult for me to remember. The Origins website describes it as ginger, bergamont, lemon and lime (unable to attach link from this device, but you can find it with a quick search).
I just bought a travel spray of this at Macys. It was inside one of the glass beaker containers by the cash register.
Good to know it’s still out there – will check it out!
I almost considered a blind buy last week, but maybe I will this week for the challenge? I saw some little Coty perfumes on the bottom shelf of the bargain beauty store I visit. Or maybe I could get Samsara, which is there too. Decisions!
Wearing Christopher Street today. I might need to get a bottle of this. I rather like smelling like Tom Collins cocktail.
The thing about Samsara is that even though it was reformulated repeatedly (as is really everything these days) and no longer contains massive amounts of Mysore sandalwood, it still smells terrific. The basic structure is so sound that they really can’t seem to wreck it, thank goodness. Me, I’d snap it up if it’s cheap.
Thank you! I know that there were little bottle of Coty l’Amiant and one other one, but after reading up on them, I don’t know if I want to bother with either since the reformulations seem to not be very good at all. I’ve always heard good things about Samsara though and it seems like a scent I’d like, so maybe I’ll grab that one. It was easily below $50. I normally never blind buy b/c I prefer samples, but I know what my xmas bonus is this year and figured I could splurge a little 😉
So….. Carnal Flower layered with Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca! I wanted something Tuberesuse Crimenelle-y, with out being so TC. It’s amazing, I swear – I love that crisp mint layered with the creamy tuberose and the greenery
Also – I can’t remember who was interested, but the Frederic Malle coffrets were available on the Barney’s website as of yesterday, but it looks like the woman’s just sold out today, boo! 🙁
However, the men’s is still available, I just checked!
Interesting combination. I really like to layer CF with Un Matin d’Orage.
I’m wearing Bois de Paradis, which suits the crisp weather we are having. Too bad that Delrae is no longer directly available in Europe.
Hi from a very rainy France. The entire day. Didn’t get off to a good start when my son forgot to take his school bag this morning and I didn’t notice until we got to the gate! Dropped it off at 12 and got completely soaked. I’m not sure how US schools work but in France the schools are locked and parents can’t get in until lunchtime (and that’s only to the gate – not inside the actual school). Very different to NZ where I’m from where you can go in any time to the school office.
Anyway I’m wearing Shalimar EDP – it’s brand new and it was a belated birthday present to myself. I love it. One of my top …. 20. I bought the Xmas coffret and you get a 15ml with the 50ml. I had a 25% off voucher so it all worked out very well. Hope you get better Robin. And can I just say that I love NST – it really brings a smile to my face when I read it. Thank you.
St. Maxime? I spent all of October not far from you in Frejus! Small world. Lovely part of France. Going back for the holidays and cannot wait. By the way, you smell terrific!
Small world! October is a great time to be in the South of France after the madness of summer.
Thank you so much!
I can go in my son’s high school any time, but there are some security procedures — have to be buzzed in and show ID.
We have that kind of safety precaution at my kids’ schools here in Virginia as well – come to the front office, show your ID to the security camera and be buzzed in.
I am a Counselor at an elementary school (grades K-6th). The parents are given too much freedom at my school and can pretty much come and go as they please. Of course we have safety precautions, but once they are in, they don’t want to leave. Our PTO is VERY involved and every classroom has a room mom. Sometimes too much parent involvement isn’t a good thing.
It’s like spring out today, so I put on Reverie au Jardin from a super generous swapper in the last swapmeet. Thank you! That one is beautiful and I’m so happy to own it now.
SOTD = Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
It’s perfect for today’s transitional (again!) weather. I’m off for the rest of the week so today feels like Friday.
Robin, I am glad you are feeling better.
Hajusuuri,
The reason why I didn’t buy this particular scent was because it didn’t last very long on me. Does it last on you or do you find yourself spraying throughout the day? It is a nice scent, though.
scentfromabove – lucky me, 5 sprays from the bottle lasts me all day (over 10 hours). I apply via the equivalent of spray and walk into the mist so the cologne covers a larger surface and a good portion lands on my hair.
With the weather turning much colder ( and I wish it would stay cold and not flip flop) I’ll be putting this away until the first sign of spring.
I’m wearing Tom Ford Tobacco Oud today…for no particular reason–just the one I picked up off my dresser. Glad you are feeling better.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
I am wearing YSL Opium layered with SL Fleur d’Oranger and I love it a lot, the combo works really great
Satisfying my hankering for violet today with SSS Wood Violet, with its plum, cedar and sandalwood votes a nice fall choice (although the ground is snow-covered, hey, it’s still fall!) Really wanted Balmain’s Jolie Madame for its violetty leather – I like it when the weather turns cold – but didn’t have the time or inclination to search for it.
Sending feel better wishes to everyone!
How strong is the cedar in SSS Wood Violet? Sometimes, cedar can overpower everything else, which doesn’t work for me.
I don’t find the cedar overwhelming at all. I love both of the SSS violets (or all three if you count To Dream, which I do).
Mmmm, Jolie Madame!
Wearing L’Occitane Gentle Honey Water today. I wish they still made this. Another night with not so much sleep, so I have a tired headache and this seemed like the thing. Plus, it reminds me of my friend who gave me her bottle when she moved across the country.
Their Gentle Honey Water was nice. The bottle was very cute, but a bit impractical with its rounded bottom.
Hope you feel better soon.
I am wearing Aesop Marakech Intense today. I always love the smell of Aesop products. This fragrance smells exactly like their deodorant which is wonderful.
Atelier Vanille Insensee today. Needing something that’s not too difficult for a school day.
Mmm, vanille incensee is wonderful. I was thinking about that one the other night when I was testing MPG amber precieux ultime.
You’re right, it’s not a difficult scent and so comforting.
I haven’t smelled that one but the notes look heavenly!
Wearing Mure et Musc Extreme. This is not a perfume I would have bought, ordinarily, but I found a (used) tester at a really good price… And I have to say, that every now and then, a berry and musk perfume is just what a girl needs 🙂
When I first got it I found it a little too much like red-berry soft drink, but today I’m getting that sour berry undertone which is a perfect contrast to the creamy musk!
SOTD is Bottega Veneta Eau légère. I like it a lot and find it easier to wear (less overwhelming) than the regular version.
I totally agree … and you smell great. 🙂
I’m also a fan of the Eau Legere as opposed to the regular version. 🙂
I got my Aftelier samples yesterday, so I’m finally trying Cuir de Gardenia. I got a sample of the EDP, and I really like it! It starts off a little rubbery, but I like the kind of sweet/smoky thing that happens between the castoreum and tiare.
I also got a sample of Tango extrait to try it again. I tried the EDP few years ago, early in my fiendery, and I didn’t like it at the time.. I think I found it a little too sweet, and maybe a bit medicinal. Well how things change… I put on a dab on the back of my hand last night, and I couldn’t stop sniffing it. And *of course* that would be the case, since there was talk the other day about it being discontinued.
“Fiendery” – LOL!
I just got a sample of Cuir de Gardenia, too! The musk is so lovely and the tiare actually made me reconsider my usual dislike of white flowers. It’s so rich and plush!
Hope you feel like a million bucks tomorrow, Robin. Glad you feel like you are on the mend 🙂
My SOTD is Wild Fig & Casis by Jo Malone.
Sampling Fireside Intense today and this is so wow for fall/winter– big, warm and comforting
SOTD is Caron Tabac Blond edt – love love love.
Last night I tried a new sample of Ineke Field Notes from Paris edp, which took me straight back to my childhood days when my father used to wear cologne and smoke cigars. It was so wonderful I sent him an email about it – he probably thinks I’m nuts.
The Vert for me today. Just right.
Another day of L’Occitane Labdanum de Seville, works very well with our bleak November weather. It is another discontinued scent from L’Occitane, I think, too bad.
Coco EDT Chanel. Dabbed generously from a 30ml bottle circa 1995.
Beautiful scent for a cold day that feels like it is going to snow.
Bah, humbug! LOL 😉
Robin, I hope you (and everyone else who has caught the bug going around) feel better in time for Thanksgiving festivities!
L’air du desert marocain for me today…it was colder than I was expecting, and I forgot how lovely (and strong!) it is.
The tireds have finally caught me up and I have been dragging all day. I wasn’t in the mood for real perfume so threw my For Strange Women sample box in my pocket and have been dousing myself in Winter Kitty all day. Nice and cozy- minty vetiver. Doesn’t last long but sometimes simple naturals are just the thing. Tonight I switched to one of the solid perfumes, Fireside Story, which I love but find almost too quiet; wish it came as an oil so I could rub some in my hair.
Oops, Fireside Story. I love Fireside Intense too but they are completely different animals.
On the hunt for a new favorite, so I’m trying out Knot (yesterday) then Infusion d’Iris and Hiris (today). At the moment I can still just faintly smell yesterday’s Knot, even after showering last night.
My arms are tired from holding them to my nose for all the test sniffing, so that’s it for today. I think Hiris is the one I like among these three, but it disappeared quickly. Maybe my nose is tired out, too.
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I’ll sniff more, tomorrow, an FB is on the way . . .
