Tuesday scent of the day 11/25

Posted by Robin on 25 November 2014 102 Comments

Happy Tuesday! What's your scent of the day?

I'm commando, again. Still feeling a bit under the weather, but I think I will be fine tomorrow.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/28 (Black Friday!) will be Cheap Thrills Friday. Wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing JLo Still, since I will be in meeting all day. I could have kept this one for Friday, itwas a bargain. Also could have worn it last Friday, since it was a blind buy as well. Have others to choose from, though, so I won’t be missing out.

Hope y’all have a productive, pleasant Tuesday!

Question for Friday: is the goal scents that retail under $50?

I know there is lots of freedom and interpretation (which makes it fun!) i am just curious :)

As always everyone can interpret as they like, but the goal is to help others find decent cheap thrills — so preferably something that retails for under $50, or that is sold for under $50 in a place online, or …?

The idea being it doesn’t really help anyone else find a cheap thrill if it’s an incredible bargain you found that someone else couldn’t buy at the same price.

Glad you are feeling better, Robin, and I hope you continue to improve. My son is now sick, we’re hoping it doesn’t interfere with our Thanksgiving plans.

I am at work today, wearing one of my favorite office scents: Prada Infusion d’Iris (layered today with a dab or two of Chanel No. 19 parfum).

You absolutely should. Allow me to quote Susan Irvine: “Once I did a blind test of fragrances with perfumers and women whose business involved smell. Nearly all agreed on one heavenly potion as the most expensive, feminine, sexy, sophisticated. In short, their favourite. When they took off their blindfolds, they saw it was — Old Spice. The less is: use your nose, not your eyes when choosing a scent.” Good advice for all of us!

Old Spice is wonderful. I notice that it doesn’t smell nearly as good as it used to in the 70s, when we were buying my dad a gift set every Christmas! But still better than a lot of stuff out there.

I’m all decked out in Rose Jam shower products today and had a very hard time picking a fragrance to go with it. I ended up going with Safran Troublant, but realized I don’t have many rose fragrances OR many sweet/joyful fragrances. After binging on mostly serious-faced incenses for the past few months, I think I’m ready for some happy scents for the holidays.

Even my friend who HATES rose scented anything told me she thought I smelled great! I knew I had “done good” when she doled out that unexpected compliment!’

Oh thanks for the concern, but our PowerLine runs through miles of more or less untended state forest land, and we loose power about every other month for some period of time. We have a gas generator. We run it an hour in the mornings and a few hours in the evenings, and it is a hassle, but not a catastrophe. I rather like having no power on at night – so much quieter in the house….

Hope you are better soon! My SOTD is Dries van Noten by Frederic Malle. I got a sample – this is my first time trying it. It’s pretty, subtle, and creamy. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first, but mostly because I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like. It felt like I chose the wrong fragrance for today, I was kind of wishing I had picked something like Mille et Une Roses. However, it is growing on me. It has a slightly powdery dry down that reminds me of what I like about Infusion d’Iris.

    Maybe give this a try:
When ever I feel slightly down with something, I go for Origin’s Ginger body product line. I use the scrub, shower gel and cream. It just warms me right up and makes me feel my body is “banishing” the bad stuff that much faster. :) After the routine just snuggle up on your couch with a warm mug of tea (add a slice of ginger or lemon with a swirl of honey – antioxidant!!) and heal!

I’ve always been curious to smell this product line, but haven’t been able to find it locally. Is it a strait up ginger scent or more sweet or citrus with ginger accents? Every year when the Origins bag comes out for Black Friday, I’m tempted to just give it a go but always talk some sense into myself. ;)

I haven’t worn it on so long that it’s difficult for me to remember. The Origins website describes it as ginger, bergamont, lemon and lime (unable to attach link from this device, but you can find it with a quick search).

I almost considered a blind buy last week, but maybe I will this week for the challenge? I saw some little Coty perfumes on the bottom shelf of the bargain beauty store I visit. Or maybe I could get Samsara, which is there too. Decisions!

Wearing Christopher Street today. I might need to get a bottle of this. I rather like smelling like Tom Collins cocktail.

The thing about Samsara is that even though it was reformulated repeatedly (as is really everything these days) and no longer contains massive amounts of Mysore sandalwood, it still smells terrific. The basic structure is so sound that they really can’t seem to wreck it, thank goodness. Me, I’d snap it up if it’s cheap.

Thank you! I know that there were little bottle of Coty l’Amiant and one other one, but after reading up on them, I don’t know if I want to bother with either since the reformulations seem to not be very good at all. I’ve always heard good things about Samsara though and it seems like a scent I’d like, so maybe I’ll grab that one. It was easily below $50. I normally never blind buy b/c I prefer samples, but I know what my xmas bonus is this year and figured I could splurge a little ;)

Hi from a very rainy France. The entire day. Didn’t get off to a good start when my son forgot to take his school bag this morning and I didn’t notice until we got to the gate! Dropped it off at 12 and got completely soaked. I’m not sure how US schools work but in France the schools are locked and parents can’t get in until lunchtime (and that’s only to the gate – not inside the actual school). Very different to NZ where I’m from where you can go in any time to the school office.
Anyway I’m wearing Shalimar EDP – it’s brand new and it was a belated birthday present to myself. I love it. One of my top …. 20. I bought the Xmas coffret and you get a 15ml with the 50ml. I had a 25% off voucher so it all worked out very well. Hope you get better Robin. And can I just say that I love NST – it really brings a smile to my face when I read it. Thank you.

I am a Counselor at an elementary school (grades K-6th). The parents are given too much freedom at my school and can pretty much come and go as they please. Of course we have safety precautions, but once they are in, they don’t want to leave. Our PTO is VERY involved and every classroom has a room mom. Sometimes too much parent involvement isn’t a good thing.

      Hajusuuri,

The reason why I didn’t buy this particular scent was because it didn’t last very long on me. Does it last on you or do you find yourself spraying throughout the day? It is a nice scent, though.

scentfromabove – lucky me, 5 sprays from the bottle lasts me all day (over 10 hours). I apply via the equivalent of spray and walk into the mist so the cologne covers a larger surface and a good portion lands on my hair.

With the weather turning much colder ( and I wish it would stay cold and not flip flop) I’ll be putting this away until the first sign of spring.

Satisfying my hankering for violet today with SSS Wood Violet, with its plum, cedar and sandalwood votes a nice fall choice (although the ground is snow-covered, hey, it’s still fall!) Really wanted Balmain’s Jolie Madame for its violetty leather – I like it when the weather turns cold – but didn’t have the time or inclination to search for it.

Wearing L’Occitane Gentle Honey Water today. I wish they still made this. Another night with not so much sleep, so I have a tired headache and this seemed like the thing. Plus, it reminds me of my friend who gave me her bottle when she moved across the country.

Their Gentle Honey Water was nice. The bottle was very cute, but a bit impractical with its rounded bottom.

      Hope you feel better soon.

I am wearing Aesop Marakech Intense today. I always love the smell of Aesop products. This fragrance smells exactly like their deodorant which is wonderful.

Atelier Vanille Insensee today. Needing something that’s not too difficult for a school day.

Mmm, vanille incensee is wonderful. I was thinking about that one the other night when I was testing MPG amber precieux ultime.

You’re right, it’s not a difficult scent and so comforting.

Wearing Mure et Musc Extreme. This is not a perfume I would have bought, ordinarily, but I found a (used) tester at a really good price… And I have to say, that every now and then, a berry and musk perfume is just what a girl needs :)

When I first got it I found it a little too much like red-berry soft drink, but today I’m getting that sour berry undertone which is a perfect contrast to the creamy musk!

SOTD is Bottega Veneta Eau légère. I like it a lot and find it easier to wear (less overwhelming) than the regular version.

I’m also a fan of the Eau Legere as opposed to the regular version. :-)

I got my Aftelier samples yesterday, so I’m finally trying Cuir de Gardenia. I got a sample of the EDP, and I really like it! It starts off a little rubbery, but I like the kind of sweet/smoky thing that happens between the castoreum and tiare.

I also got a sample of Tango extrait to try it again. I tried the EDP few years ago, early in my fiendery, and I didn’t like it at the time.. I think I found it a little too sweet, and maybe a bit medicinal. Well how things change… I put on a dab on the back of my hand last night, and I couldn’t stop sniffing it. And *of course* that would be the case, since there was talk the other day about it being discontinued.

I just got a sample of Cuir de Gardenia, too! The musk is so lovely and the tiare actually made me reconsider my usual dislike of white flowers. It’s so rich and plush!

SOTD is Caron Tabac Blond edt – love love love.

Last night I tried a new sample of Ineke Field Notes from Paris edp, which took me straight back to my childhood days when my father used to wear cologne and smoke cigars. It was so wonderful I sent him an email about it – he probably thinks I’m nuts.

Another day of L’Occitane Labdanum de Seville, works very well with our bleak November weather. It is another discontinued scent from L’Occitane, I think, too bad.

Coco EDT Chanel. Dabbed generously from a 30ml bottle circa 1995.
Beautiful scent for a cold day that feels like it is going to snow.

Robin, I hope you (and everyone else who has caught the bug going around) feel better in time for Thanksgiving festivities!

L’air du desert marocain for me today…it was colder than I was expecting, and I forgot how lovely (and strong!) it is.

The tireds have finally caught me up and I have been dragging all day. I wasn’t in the mood for real perfume so threw my For Strange Women sample box in my pocket and have been dousing myself in Winter Kitty all day. Nice and cozy- minty vetiver. Doesn’t last long but sometimes simple naturals are just the thing. Tonight I switched to one of the solid perfumes, Fireside Story, which I love but find almost too quiet; wish it came as an oil so I could rub some in my hair.

On the hunt for a new favorite, so I’m trying out Knot (yesterday) then Infusion d’Iris and Hiris (today). At the moment I can still just faintly smell yesterday’s Knot, even after showering last night.

My arms are tired from holding them to my nose for all the test sniffing, so that’s it for today. I think Hiris is the one I like among these three, but it disappeared quickly. Maybe my nose is tired out, too.

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I’ll sniff more, tomorrow, an FB is on the way . . .
