Thursday scent of the day 11/20

Posted by Robin on 20 November 2014 152 Comments

Penhaligon's Elixir

We're almost to Friday! What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Penhaligon's Elixir. It has been on my buy list since it debuted in 2008. I still don't own it. Hey Penhaligon's, travel sprays!!

Reminder: this Friday, 11/21, is Unsniffed Friday: wear a perfume you bought before you'd smelled it, and tell us how it worked out for you. If you've never bought anything unsniffed, congratulations, and do chime in with your scent of the day anyway. The following Friday, 11/28, will be Cheap Thrills.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Cartier Baiser Vole EDP.

I have a reckless urge to buy something unsniffed this afternoon and wear it for the first time tomorrow. For Science, of course.

Ha! That reminds me of the time my mother said that she was going to attend a family reunion “purely for anthropological purposes.”

There is no shame in treating one’s family of origin as a socio-anthropological experiment. :)

I used to be a believer in this method but my father has turned this spirit of scientific inquiry into a way to stir the pot–at a recent extended family dinner, he began asking our relatives to share their feelings about health care…climate change… Sometimes it’s better not to ask too many questions! :)

I was having total itchy fingers yesterday! I went home after work (had to leave the dog out) and then headed back out to Marshall’s. I did a blind buy of a cute little bottle of Donna Karan Be Delicious for my teen daughter. She is almost finished with her bottle of Pink Sugar – which she loves! I remember her telling me a couple years ago that she liked the DK fragrance after sampling in at Sephora. I hope her taste hasn’t changed too much. And, the bottle was a bargain. Stashing it away for the holidays.

Heading to California in December for my own anthropological study. Will need to put on my impartial scientist hat.

I’ve always labelled this in my mind as a gourmand iris. And for what it’s worth I don’t find the smell naughty in the least. The name is a bit ambiguous I suppose, but who cares. It’s just a great fragrance.

We are scent twins today! I first tried Felanilla on a hot summer day and was not very impressed, but in the cold it is wonderful, and the sour note I picked up in August is not present today. Smells like a cozy cashmere throw.

Today, I’m trying Smell Bent’s Bollywood or Bust for the first time. They describe it as “an intoxicating blend of red rose absolute, robust sandalwood and rich, savory spices.” I am glad that I only applied one spray. I almost like it, but the spices really do have a savory/umami vibe, and while I like that in food, that is not the kind of gourmand perfume I enjoy wearing. It’s only been 90 minutes, so we’ll see what happens.

Ooh, I’d like to try this. Penhaligon’s is such a hit or miss line for me, but when they hit, they hit.Cardomom and Orange Blossom are two of my favorite notes, and Giacobetti is the most represented nose in my FB collection, so I suspect I’d like this quite a bit.

The last time my husband was in London he stopped into Penhaligons and bought me a travel atomiser, which the SA graciously filled with a fragrance of his choice. So while it doesn’t fulfill your above request, it’s…close?

If the new Ivoire is inoffensive and office-friendly then it must not by anything like the old Ivoire, because holy cow, that thing was a big-ass floral chypre with a ton of personality.

SOTD is Lancome Climat (la collection). Many people commented yesterday how great this is. It is an old-fashioned green floral – but I mean old fashioned in the best way! Not so ubiquitous. Although I don’t feel off by wearing it now, this will be perfect in spring.

So, after perusing reviews of Climat, I read on Muse in Wooden Shoes that that many perfumistas like the smell of cat fur … I thought it was just me being a weird cat lady >^..^< Anyhow, it might smell similar to civet. Interesting. I knew someone who used to have ferrets and I always liked the way they smelled. It was a very strong smell, but not bad. I like how a tiny bit of animalic smells can ground florals.

The idea that someone _wouldn’t_ like the smell of cat fur is what’s bizarre to me. Cats smell lovely!

Then again, I’m the girl who, upon tasting lingonberry jam for the first time, exclaimed, “Oh, it’s tastes like how kittens smell!” – yeah, that got some weird looks from my brunch partners…

They are native to the US, similar to raspberries but since they aren’t cultivated they are very flavorful. My boyfriend has family from the upper peninsula of Michigan, and thimbleberries are a big thing up there. I think they might also grow in the pacific northwest, but I’m not sure.

I tend to have jam on the brain at this time of year since I always order some for my dad and other people for the holidays.

That is so interesting to me because my daughter and I love to sniff the cat because he smells like a wonderful bit of nothing! I will admit my weirdness – I love the smell of the dog’s paws after he has been out in the grass. But I don’t think they should bottle that.

Tomorrows challenge will be the easiest for me so far, by a long shot. Shameless blind-buyer I am but they always work out if I go by the reviews of a couple of reviewers with similar taste to me. Only some ‘omg! discontinued! Cheap!’ buys haven’t worked out quite so well… Lol. So I’m spoilt for choice!

Today I smell like Aziyadè which is usually an autumn/winter frag but I was just so cold today and needing some cozy.

They were 2 of my good ones too!
Best Ever is Roma Imperiale by Profumi del Forte, based on the list of notes, and it being found cheaply. One of my Top 5.

        Other great successes:
        Amaranthine
        Nasomatto Nuda
        Baghari
        La Fille de Berlin
        Tea For Two
        Krazy Krizia
        Habanita
(I could keep going you know ;-) )

I love that stuff! My Husband recently buzz cut his hair to show solidarity for a friend going through chemotherapy. His scalp was in the kind of shape one would expect a scalp that had endured too much sun exposure and dry winter weather to be in, not good. He rubs Karma Kreme all over his scalp at night and smells divine into the next day and this stuff really works!

I’m a rather shameless blind-buyer myself, and will have a hard time choosing tomorrow. Luckily I have broad tastes in perfume (and also rely heavily on trusted reviewers) so it has mostly worked out well for me.

Today I’m wearing Coco by Chanel. I’ve had a small bottle of the EDP for quite a few years (a little goes a long way) so in this case I don’t even remember if I tested before purchasing. I was inspired this morning by some of yesterday’s NST commenters; they were absolutely right, Coco is great in the cold!

I’m at a loss today but am thinking Diorissimo. It’s so cold, and bright and sunny so I feel like a sparkly Lily-of-the-Valley may hit the spot. Otherwise it may be Fille de Berlin. I need some flowers in my life today!

Oh! Maybe that will be what I wear for tomorrow’s blind buy day–ordinarily I never buy blind at all (alas grad student budget does not allow that kind of a margin of error), but I sometimes make exceptions for vintage finds. Diorissimo was such a winner in that way!

Today I’m wearing the Italian Patchouli Antique and I smell like sweet pipe tobacco that’s been stored with a bundle of vanilla beans in a dusty old cupboard made of Indonesian hardwood.

FYI it looks like there is a run on Une Rose de Kandahar on Luckyscent. It is already backordered with a 14 day wait till shipping. So I decided to pull the trigger this morning and ordered a bottle. A couple of kind perfumistas gave me the free shipping code for this month. It is Fall14.

My worst blind buy was a bottle of Hippie Chick from Marshalls. Sorry to offend anyone but I think it’s the perfume equivalent of trailer trash. And sadly, up till a few short years ago I probably would have liked it! I guess that makes me a perfume snot, and even worse, a perfume snot who has only been doing this for a couple years. I left it on the lady’s room sink at the library.

All I seem to want to wear in this cold is cozy, sandalwoody goodness – today, Santal Carmin. It’s all sweaters, ambers and woods over here – forget everything else.

Also – I’ve started my second level perfumery class, and I am having a woooonderful time. I have no expectations of ever being able to create a masterpiece, but it’s such a pleasure to sit with people who love and care about scent, and can happily discuss it for three hours every Tuesday night in a Brooklyn loft. Definitely an opportunity I wouldn’t have almost anywhere else.

Thanks! My little creations thus far have been rather blunt and decidedly amateur, and I’m fine with that. I don’t aspire to perfumery greatness, but I’m learning so much about notes, blending, and everything else, and having so much fun. If you see SVA offering the class I again, I can’t recommend it enough.

Hope that you’re very well, and loving your new job!!

Not sure what I’ll wear tomorrow. Do decants count? Pretty much all my decants from splits are unsniffed. I think most of my unsniffed bottles didn’t work out, so I either swapped or sold them! This morning I started out wearing VS Rapture for Mr. Ab. Scent since it’s one of his favorites, it’s his birthday and that perfume has lots of old-school sentimental value. After showering, I’m currently not wearing any perfume since I have more cooking to do, but will be wearing Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille later. It’s so boozy, warm, sweet and feels right for celebrating… Especially with cake. :)

Hi Perthgirl. :) It turned out really well, though had to do a bit of hunting to track down some Kirschwasser rather than schnapps. I wanted my first try to be as close to the recipe as I could get. I used Valrona for the cocoa powder and it was really good. Even the kids seemed to like it, though not as much as the adults probably because of the brandy flavor. It was fun to give it a go and I’m already imagining what sorts of variations I can try next time for the fun of it. Thanks for asking and I hope you have a wonderful Friday. :D

I’m wearing a sample of Monteil’s Bakir a friend sent me. It’s from the scent’s original run, not the Long Lost Perfumes re-do. Wow this is a powerhouse, which is just fine by me as I like my ‘fumes big and bold. I’m surprised I don’t remember this from its heyday back in the ’80s, I believe, but perhaps it got lost in the cloud of big ole ‘fumes and big ole hair and big ole shoulderpads. :)

It’s nice for a cold day and since I don’t have perfume-a-phobes in my office, I can’t rock it.

I’m also fond of “blind buys” (which often go hand-in-hand with “cheap thrills”). Wearing one that fits both categories today, Ellen Tracy Bronze edp, got it for a pittance after reading many favorable reviews. As a violet lover I am intrigued by this scent and not disappointed at all. A bit bright upon opening (bergamot + ‘lemonade’ + a tiny bit of green apple), at first it reminds me of AG’s La Violette, which I have and love. Then, as the sweet violet melds with the powdery heliotrope, the greenness disappears and it resembles Cashmere Mist but with violets (I find CM cloying and suffocating and dislike it, but the powderiness of Bronze mixed with the sweet – but not sugary – violets is instead warm and comforting, I don’t get the choking sensation that I do with CM). Haven’t not quite gotten to drydown stage yet, I’m hoping I catch a whiff of the cedar in its base, another favorite note for me. All in all, very enjoyable on another cold winter day – but at least we have sunshine and I’m grateful I don’t live in Buffalo!
