Monday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2014 134 Comments

Etro 2013 fashion

And another week begins...what's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Etro Shaal Nur.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/7, we're doing "down the rabbit hole Friday": wear the perfume that turned you into a perfumista (whatever that means to you).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning. I’m wearing Coco, kind of — I was so worried about overapplying that I dramatically underapplied!

You still smell great! Sometimes I think Coco smells better the less you put on. People will have to get very close to you to smell it!

Smell Bent Bollywood or Bust is a very nice spicy woody rose, similar to Marni but less expensive.

Bollywood or Bust is nice, although I get mostly wood with the rose. I like Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection Etat Libre d`Orange although I get more citrus than spice with the rose.

Here in the woods it is an overcast cold Fall morning so I reached for Tauer’s new Gardenia. It is as earthy, wet and deep as the world outside my window today. Already had compliments on it.

Gres Cabaret is quite nice, for an inexpensive rose with pepper. L’Occitane 4 Reines maybe?

I really like Agent Provocateur, which I think you can find very inexpensively. For a lovely inexpensive amber rose (not spicy, though), I would recommend Stella.

I am fond of L’Agent Provacateur too. (The original one). I find it rather naughty, perhaps more of a hot date rather than an office scent.
Madness is a nice discontinued peppery rose, which for a while was very cheaply available from internet discounters. You might want to check if that is still the case.

PriscillaE, have you tried Perles de Lalique? It’s a peppery, patchouli rose, and it can often be found at quite a reasonable price.

Myrrhiad is SO GOOD — love the bottle, the name, the scent — and the only thing that has stopped me from buying some is that I find it very similar to Serge Lutens Douce Amère, which I already own. But you smell great!

Joop Le Bain – cheap blind buy, and I’m really surprised by it. The name is very appropriate. Best described as a steamy, fluffy towel-dried tonka-amber scent. Apparently there are aldehydes, which accounts for the steamy sort of feel. Quite clever!

No dry-cleaner musk here though, thankfully. L’Eau was just like smelling ironed clothes to me, sort of detergent-y. Le Bain is definitely ‘clean gourmand’ as oxymoronic as that sounds.

Vintage Parfum de Peau by Montana. Tons of eighties blackcurrant, dirty roses, honey, and oakmoss, with filthy, growly wild-animal underpinnings. They do not make them like this any more.

A great Cuddle Amber is by Ambre Loup by Rania J. I was sent a sample with an order from FIF, and although I don’t usually wear heavy amber scents, this one has just the right amount of sweetness and softness. Worth a try.

At work tonight (no perfume rules here :) ) I went for Baiser Vole edp. I gave a work friend a hello hug some hours ago and he just joked that his shirt now smells like me and that he’ll have to explain himself to his wife. Oopsies! Lol

Always interesting to find things you forgot you had. I once spent hours counting how many untried samples I had and it was over 300 (still is because I sample a few but then acquire a few more). It would take me even more time to catalogue EVERY sample I own. I don’t even want to think how long that would take

Oooh but think how many hidden gems there are just waiting for you! :) There’s bound to be at least one of those ‘I HAVE to have this’ moments in there, a la Elisa’s Myrrhiad.
I still haven’t tried my Oriza L. Legrand samples, but I dabbed a tiny bit of Jardins d’Armide on my hand and thought ‘ooooh. Really pretty floral. Must get to know this one better…’ :-/

I’m in Sacramento — not glamorous, but we have two rivers, good places to view nature, two “art house” movie theatres, sunshine (although the Tule fog will be here soon), low humidity, proximity to Davis (a college town), and we’re close enough for day trips to the ocean, mountains, forest, or high desert.

It’s been in the 40s at night and my husband pulled out the electric blanket last week :-)

I’ve spent very little time in NorCal – just SF and Napa/Sonoma a bit and a quick drive up the coast. I’ve heard that area is beautiful. I really need to get up there and do Yosemite and the Redwoods. San Diego is great and all, but it’s the desert and I miss green and trees and (fresh) water!

Seeing Yosemite Valley in person will … blow … your …mind. The redwoods and sequoias are awesome, as well.

After you visit, you’ll have to pick up some stuff from Juniper Ridge for fragrant reminders of your travels :-)

SOTD = Profumum Ambra Aurea with a chaser of VC&A Orchidee Vanille

Ambra Aurea is one of the best ambers out there and it is Strong. I opted to underapply (one spritz) and since I wanted to get vanilla in the mix, added 3 tiny spritzes of Orchidee Vanille. This combo reminds me of Krigler Subtle Orchid but not as sweet.

    Bear w me!
I am wearing an über good scent, Ubar Amouage, after discovering 40 charges from Uber on my credit card over three days… Talked to the bank, which was ‘a bear,’ but is now canceling my card and reversing the charges so I am super happy and smell terrific!

Cold and windy here today, so like many of you I’m taking refuge in a cozy vanilla. I’m wearing PdN Vanille Tonka and brought my decant to the office for frequent reapplication.

Decant sprayers usually aren’t the best, so three or four wimpy sprays are usually required. :-)

Love Vanille Tonka… at 3 pm I am still unscented (been working on my NaNoWriMo project), but maybe that’s what I should go grab.

I adore Vanille Tonka, it reminds me of the goodness of Shalimar, while remaining totally original. Patricia de Nicolai really is an outstanding perfumer.

Wearing Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit. Doesn’t smell particularly like either of those things, but it’s a nice in between kind of scent for the in between weather we’ve been having. It’s sweet, but not too much.

SOTD is L’eau Ambree which I’ve not worn in a while having found some other very good amber scents to enjoy. Took the day off so I sprayed with abandon ;)

Someone above used the term “take it easy” scent, and I went with a “really, it’s perfectly okay to be at work” scent , namely Ferre.

I’m wearing Micallef Rouge No. 1 today. I admit I fell in love with this at first sniff. It’s a fruity floral that belies all the mediocrity that exists under that fragrance appelation. Seemlessly blended, you can note the peach and citrus and the jasmine, but none of them overtakes the fragrance. Each contributes nicely to the overall blend. It’s sweet, but there’s enough quiet musk to temper the sweetness and although it goes on big, it quickly subsides in something close to the skin and sexy.

This is labeled as a woman’s scent, but I would love love love this on a guy.

Just dipped a hand in the sample box today and came out with Jacomo #8. I’ve never tried it, but it’s turning out to be really nice in the fall weather! It’s spicy, but it’s really not heavy at all. Totally transparent. It’s a very nice sniff.

I LOVE Jacomo 08, even though it contains freesia, which usually ruins a perfume for me. Now that the weather is cooling off, 08 has returned to my rotation. I can detect every single listed note and they all come out to play at their own times.

      It’s relatively inexpensive, too :-)

I am really, really enjoying it! It was a blind grab and it ended up being perfect for today. I was smelling something floral in there, it must be the Freesia, but with all the spices/zingy ginger it’s really lovely!

Feminite du Bois from a kind perfumista from the recent swap meet — love it! It smells like the holidays to me, I don’t know why — and like a slightly less sweet dryer Chergui? Anybody else have a thought about it?

Also, was cruising the Sephora website for garbage I don’t need (it’s holiday value set time!), and they had some really well-priced new L’artisan value sets if anybody wants to take a gander — I want the 10-piece discovery set (okay, even though I already have about four of them) – $20! And also a cute little coffret set and the cigarette-style spray set — I got that set for Xmas last year (slightly different fragrances — this one has Seville l’Aube!) — and I loved it. They had some Atelier ones too, but I thought they were rather pricy.

I just ordered the L’Artisan set – such a great deal!! Today I wore #19 but my coat smelled like Mohur so I added that later. This may be the reason my eyes are all itchy; it’s a bit too much!

Just checked Sephora – all those L’Artisan sets are a great deal. But I’ve tried a few and don’t need all of them. I also noticed a Nest set that is so cute. I love their packaging – trying to think of someone I can give that to!

SOTD is from Arabian Oud and the name is in Arabic so I don’t know what it’s called. It was a gift after I bought two other bottles from them. I bought the bottles a while ago but this is the first time I have tried what was in the little silver bottle. It’s an attar, and I smell rose and oud and orange blossom. Far and away the prettiest and most wearable of the three, and I don’t know the name!

It is funny! The other two were Kalemat and Ghroob. Ghroob is overwhelmingly orange blossom and I have to be in the mood for it. Unknown name is pretty and very wearable for me. Kalemat was overwhelming.

Meant to say that Kalemat was just overwhelming in every sense–heavy amber, immense longevity, huge sillage.

My problem is that I always find scents either too much or not enough, lol! Yes, i only tried Kalemat once and some of it got on my jeans and resided there forever. I liked it, but I also thought it might become TOO much, very quickly. There is one in a black as opposed to brown bottle (Kalemat 2?)and it is a little more restrained (too quiet on my skin) But also its less fruity, which at the time I preferred.

Well I have the good fortune of never having smelled the older one! Personally I like it very much, when (as with all my scents) I am in the right mood. It is quite a thin black leather/green smell; the texture is like the blade of a leaf.

I once compared it to Etro’s Gomma and was surprised at how similar they were except that Gomma is rounded out with a sweep balsamic under-tone. Perhaps that makes Gomma a better or rounder perfume, but sometimes it is that exact thinness that I am after – and then Cabochard hits the spot.

, which means I am not haunted by an idealized idea

Sorry – I was meaning to say that by not having smelled an older one I might be missing out, but its also true that I am not haunted by an idealized impression of something I smelled long ago…

    Happy new week everybody :)!
This morning I realize that I wear FM Iris Poudre much less than I ought to. I kinda tiptoe around it not really believing I have a full bottle, although I have had it almost six months. My first sniff of it was my first Holy Grail moment, especially since I deemed it totally unobtainable.
So today has been a Iris Poudre day with a feeling of gratitude.

I decided to go with Angel Parfum de Cuir today.

Incidentally, I discovered a layer combo yesterday that is pretty nice. I started out wearing Hermes Jardin en Mediterranee, but it wasn’t quite doing it for me. I had also just gotten from a very generous perfume fairy a travel spray of FM Lys Mediterranee. They go really well together, as it turns out.

Greetings from Virginia! Since I don’t have my entire perfume collection with me, I have been living solely on no. 19 in edp form. It was the only full bottle that I took because I was craving a bitey iris and kind of forgot to pack anything else. But I saved myself by forgetting that vintage decant of Mitsouko. Now, should I wear vintage Mitsouko or keep on going with no 19?
