Happy Halloween! Our community project today: wear your quirkiest or weirdest or spookiest fragrance. And if you live somewhere where children trick or treat, tell us what candy you're giving out this year. Or, if you're dressing up, tell us about your costume!
I'm wearing The Voice of Reason from Lush. It is really only weird in the opening, but the opening is pretty darned weird. I think it might be one of the set that got axed, but I'm not positive. And we are giving out M&Ms. We don't get many trick or treaters, so I expect I will eat most of them, eventually.
Reminder: next Friday, 11/7, we're doing "down the rabbit hole Friday": wear the perfume that turned you into a perfumista (whatever that means to you).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

I had to go to a meeting at my son’s school that I was not looking forward to, so I wore Coromandel. Later, I plan to wear MAC Asphalt Flower because I think it is good weird.
Good weird is always better than bad weird 🙂
Ha! True! My company actually gave out shirts that said that one year. I decided to wear Silences perfume instead, which is very good weird.
Bulgari Black here! It’s by far the weirdest scent in my not-very-weird collection of gourmands, soft ambers and ladylike florals, and its astronaut-y vibe goes with my Amy Pond costume.
Had to google Amy Pond — it’s embarrassing to admit but have never seen a whole episode of Dr. Who.
You smell great!
It’s definitely not a universal reference! But people who DO get it get pretty excited, so it evens out.
Also, “its” ugh ugh ugh.
Fixed it for you 🙂
Much better! Thank you!
Pond! BB is a good choice for her. My husband and I are just re-watching for the Nth time older seasons. We are currently on “The Silence” with the space suites, etc., so it’s very fitting for Halloween.
That’s the costume! Red plaid + eyeliner hash marks.
Awesome!!
Black is so good-weird, with its black-rubber vibe allied with comfortable vanilla. It’s confusing, in a good way.
Me too!! It’s the only one I have that is even remotely weird, I love that burning rubber opener. At one time I had Demeter Funeral Parlor but gave it away.
We will be at a college men’s hockey game this evening. The student section will all be in costume and are really something to see. I will wear blinky devil horns and my husband will pretend he doesn’t know me. LOL
I wish I could see you as Amy Pond! I painted side burns on my son this morning to complete his David Tennant costume.
Aww I bet he’s darling!
Fifteen years ago I definitely thought that Bvlgari Black was a weird perfume. This year, going through the list of perfumes to figure out which one I could wear for today, I didn’t even pause on this one.
You smell great! 🙂
Yay for the Amy Pond costume! Love it!
I couldn’t figure out what I might have that would suit the theme (I’ve been a little slow this week…), so I picked something new-to-me and interesting, Jo Malone’s Oud & Bergamot, which I’m really enjoying. But Robin, the minute I read your choice, I slapped my forehead – how could I have forgotten that I own the truly bizarre (and polarizing) Breath of God? Oh well, maybe that will be my SOTE.
Excited to see what others select for today.
Breath of God is perfect! I have never made my mind up about it…
I’m wearing CdG Black because it seemed appropriate—incense and licorice. When I was deciding what to wear I was thinking I don’t really have anything that fits the category… then I realized I’m probably no longer a good judge of what other people would consider weird or quirky perfumes. (Voice of Reason doesn’t smell that weird to me, for instance.)
Well exactly…probably many of us are in that position at this point! I wear all kinds of perfumes I would have considered strange (at best) when I was younger.
SOTD is BPAL Shattered. I think its weird – champagne, grapefruit, mint, and lotus. It is supposed to smell like glass shards. Not something I would wear regularly due to the strong mint note, but I do like it and it’s fun for today 🙂
We get tons of trick or treaters (we go through 15+ bags of candy) and we bought a bunch of stuff but I don’t remember what. I try to get a variety.
15 bags! We live at the top of a steep hill and have a dead end on one side — pretty much not worth the effort for anyone but the determined. I buy 1 big bag just in case and rarely use it all up.
Shattered sounds like it’s worth checking out for me! I purchased AA Herba Fresca for the mint but wish it was even more minty!
Other minty suggestions to try if you haven’t: AA Mentafolia, Smell Bent Mama Cassis (both discontinued but maybe you can find some around), and AG Nuit Etoilee.
thanks so much for the recs…will add them to my ever growing list! 🙂
I really really really really really wanted to wear Secretions Magnifiques because well, if you can’t wear that on Halloween when can you? Alas, I just can’t. In fact I’ve never worn it, I just keep it locked up far away from everything. Instead it’ll have to be something spooky in spirit for me, so probably anything heavily incense or smokey. Probably Tom Ford Sahara Noir or SMN’s Nostalgia for some burnt rubber smoke feelings 🙂
It is a little nauseating! In fact, that Haunted Basement in NYC that I posted about earlier today could surely use it for something, if it weren’t so expensive.
Nostalgia is perfect.
I’ve never tried this perfume and do not plan to but it was the one that came to my mind once I read the project description.
Be really really really glad you didn’t choose SM. The Tom Ford OR the SMN are better choices, srsly 😀
Not exactly spooky, but Olympic Orchids Dev #1 felt dark and wicked enough for Halloween, so I’m wearing an “office appropriate” amount (dabbed with a cotton ball instead of sprayed, but still way strong). I’m imagining the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia. To keep on theme, tomorrow, I think I’ll wear incense.
No trick-or-treaters where I am, which stuck me with a bunch of Twix, Kit Kats, and Milky Way Darks that I never got to give out last year. This year, it will just be candy for the house, and we can pretend we didn’t buy it for ourselves.
You smell fantastic! I have an entire bottle of this fantastic fragrance and it’s going down in level fast!
I’m a sucker for anything described as dark and wicked … I may have to order the DEV sampler! Have you tried the other ones?
I haven’t tried the others, but they all sound intriguing! Wearing this one today has got me thinking I need to check out the rest of the line, too!
I -just- bought the sample pack …
Make sure to let us know what you think of the set! I love the idea that it follows a plotline!
I like them all but 4 is my favorite and 1 runs a close second.
Night on Bald Mountain! That was certainly an evocative piece of my childhood, living with a music-ed mother who loved FAntasia.
Night on Bald Mountain scared the living daylights out of me when I was younger, but I loved it. I just bought Fantasia on DVD and watched it a few nights ago. Even better than I remembered, and that one is still scary.
Also, you have all of the best candy! Milky Way Dark and Twix are the two best Halloween candies you can get. Those little trick-or-treaters don’t know what they’re missing.
I am wearing Ladyboy from Lush! Banananananas 🙂
When its later into the night though, I will be putting on some Secretions Magnifique. Nothing gets more disturbing than that I think. 😛
In the spirit of the day, a tiny spritz of the bewitching Mandragore edt as I sort piles of books today (in close quarters with others) in preparation for our library’s upcoming book sale. Then tonight when the witches and ghouls and goblins come out to play, I’ll ramp it up with Parfum du Coeur’s Vampire edp. A cheap thrill, and yes, its bottle is t-a-c-k-y, but its boozy-cherry liqueur-topped-with-bittersweet-chocolate is quite good for an inexpensive seductive love potion. Happy Halloween!
Candy: only good stuff we can eat later (Reese’s peanut butter cups, Snickers, Twix, etc.); also tiny PlayDoh cans, tattoos and stickers for the non-candy crowd.
Forget the candy, I wish I had gotten PlayDoh and tattoos when I was a kid! That’s a great idea!
I had it narrowed down to two and kept flipping my imaginary coin in the shower: Miller Harris Rose en Noir or TM Alien Essence Absolue. I went with Alien EA b/c it does have part of that super challenging Alien opening for about 20 minutes before it settles down. I thought the Alien family fragrance was a fitting choice for Halloween. It is definitely my weirdest.
We don’t hand out candy b/c it’s too remote. Up here in the rural woody darkness most people do trunk or treat type events at the schools. We (the library) also do one with the Parks n Rec which is just super fun b/c about 100 kids are all running around on the soccer field and playground in their costumes. Tonight we just drive to a few people’s houses. Up here Halloween festivities last for about 2 to 3 weeks so it’s fun that she wears her costume more than one time. I always give out Smarties and Tootsie Pops. I’m not dressing up, but my daughter is going as Snow White Ruby Cinderella.
What’s Rose en Noir like?
I like her La Pluie very have difficulty smelling La Fumee. Fleurs de Sel is fascinating and would work for Halloween, too.
The closest fragrance I can think to ReN is kind of a rustic version of l’Arte di Gucci, if that makes any sense. L’Arte is supremely complex and elegant and has that nice dark rose and patch combo. What would L’Arte wear to a (nice!) cabin in the woods? Dressed down L’Arte? Do you get a picture here? ReN has an intensely jammy, wet, but not really sweet rose – more like an awesome porto reserve if that smelled like a rose. There are some dark spices in there, maybe just the barest hint of cocoa, but mostly kind of a cinnamony sandalwood type accord that brings some woody dust to the super dark scratchy, dirt like patchouli. THere is a great balance in wet and dry accords. There must be some kind of wonderfully effective musk in there too, b/c ReN has quite a lot of body and wears really warm and thick. (I only enjoy a very light application.) I don’t get as much green out of it as Mals describes below, but there are probably some mossy notes in there. I’m not sensitive to patch, but it pushes everything aside to my nose. It lasts all day with a kind of plushy romantic vibe, like how I love wearing one of those massive woolly Irish cardigans next to a fire type vibe. It is very romantic and definitely unisex. I guess I’m describing more of a mood than a smell. I think it’s a fairly straightforward composition, Rose, woods, spices, musk, patch. But it is very nicely done.
I don’t know how I manage to not remember a lot of patchouli in this one. But maybe it’s the aged stuff, which can smell very green to me. I don’t remember getting the dusty-dirty patch vibe (which I usually hate).
After I wrote the above, I went looking around for the notes list and other reviews, etc. So….maybe the patch hijacks it for me? I don’t get any tobacco even though it’s a note, and lost of people comment on the ambrette, which may be what I’m interpreting as musk? I don’t know. Maybe it’s a shape shifter, which explains why you smell it differently too, Mals. In any case, it took me about 2 or 3 years of occasional testing for me to come around to it.
Sounds great – must try!
We’re too rural to get trick-or-treaters as well. I miss the days when my boys wanted to wear the same thing – to be cowboys or hunter or commandos, or the year they dressed up as Vikings (I made their helmets, out of milk cartons covered in paper bags and ornamented with rolled-paper “horns” covered with masking tape! Those were so cool)… we always went back to our old neighborhood for the trick-or-treating.
I really liked Rose en Noir but not enough to buy it. In fact, it seemed like a gorgeous deep pink/russet brown/olive green sort of fragrance to me, with the spices and what I remember as being a mossy drydown. Lovely thing.
I’m wearing LL L’Eau de Minuet in the midnight blue bottle. Not necessarily weird, but the bottle reminds me of a poison apple. I was thinking wearing of POTL Luctor et Emergo but decided to save it for this evening instead.
A few funnies:
What do you get when you cross Bambi with a ghost?
Bamboo!
What would you get if you crossed a ghost with a black bird?
A scare-crow!
How do you mend a broken Jack-o-lantern?
With a pumpkin patch!
Why are black cats such good singers?
They’re very meeewsical!
What do ghosts use to wash their hair?
Shamboo!
Good ones!
Those are great jokes!
./giggle
(as an old MMORPG player I am very familiar with pumpkin patches, if you have been there you know what I mean ;))
🙂
Thanks! These are adorable, and I am texting them with my nephew 😀 Perfect, silly Halloween giggles.
You smell terrific and ave fun with Snow White Ruby Cinderella!
Thank you so much!
That was supposed to be have…….
Wearing Le Labo Oud 27. I find the medicinal asphalt opening very scary, but it dries down in ten minutes to a very pleasant warm skin scent. With this one, try before you buy, as it’s a love-it or hate-it kind of fragrance.
Our neighbors down the street have a Halloween extravaganza complete with flying ghosts and goblins, crypts opening, and witches brewing, all with sound effects. We get some spillover, so I bought 8 bags and will just turn the lights out when the candy is gone.
Happy Halloween everybody!
I want to try that one! It got a rave review in The Guide and is compared to Bvlgari Black.
I got a good-sized decant in a swap and probably won’t need any more though it’s interesting enough to wear once in awhile.
I love Oud 27. It is really odd up top, medicinal indeed, but then so pleasant. Have you tried Cuir 28? There is something in the bone structure of these two that seems similar. I have decants of both, and when I wear one, I think of the other. I need to test them side by side one day. You smell great today!
I haven’t tried Cuir 28, but will send for a sample soon. I love leather fragrances!
And did not end up in quite the right spot, as it was addressed to AnnS…..
Ok – got it. Cheers!
I am wearing what I think is the strangest thing I own, Serge Lutens Chypre Rouge, which is completely unparalleled and unique: Wine Gums and tree resins and honey, but somehow not particularly sweet, yet not dry either (how do they do it?), and not an oriental but not exactly a chypre, so….what is it? What?
Chanel Sycomore, because I can never touch my decant without being reminded of Twin Peak’s agent Cooper terrible, awful fate. So, here’s the link to the Sycamore song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiwtDoxHT2Y
Happy Halloween!
Oh yeah! I love Twin Peaks. You got the sinister pine tree vibe down. Sycomore on a dark night, lol. NOthing scarier than hearing the wind howling through pine trees on a moonless night… OOOhhh AAAahhh. A few branches cracking, coming closer!!!!
Remember Agent Cooper’s quote about the smell of Douglas Firs? Never saw (or smelled) one, but looking forward to!
Twin Peaks fan here, too!
I heard rumors somewhere that David Lynch is revisiting it. Do you know if it is true?
YES! He definitely is, he announced it on Twitter. I am excited.
True, as Robin says. Further details here:
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/oct/06/twin-peaks-showtime-david-lynch/
Thank’s!
I wish you all a happy Halloween! Having grown up without it, and because I needed some comfort today I chose Vamp à New York, which must be one of the friendliest tuberose scents. And I think Giacobetti has created quirkier fragrances than this one, but I love it for what it is and am halfway through my first bottle of it 🙂
I have appointments today, so nothing until later, when I’ll look for a sample of Strange Invisible Perfumes Black Rosette that I’ve been meaning to test. I love Magazine Street, which would be fine for Halloween, too, actually.
I am wearing Frankfurt Kitchen by Social Creatures; it’s unique enough to wear today. I get dried fruits, orange and coffee from it, plus a slight metallic note.
I don’t get too many trick or treaters, so I have special decorated cookies (not made by me) for the neighborhood children and then Smartees for others that may come along. The Smartees are small, so each kid will get several.
Since today is a WFH day and I can wear whatever I want, I tried wearing Amouage Jubilation 25. I’d read so much about it’s “mature” and “funk” scent from the cumin in it I thought it would be spooky to try. Well, it spooked me alright. More like set off the gag reflexes. I couldn’t handle it at all. I had to scrub it off or be nauseous. I’m not woman enough for that scent.
Hey Guys! Happy Halloween!
We here don’t do it as You do, just pay a visit to the cemetery bringing flowers and lighting candles for the spirits of those gone.
But in honour of You I’ve chosen König by Yosh Han. It is weird, starting with tart apple and quickly turning into Encre Noire. Fun! I love it:).
Testing Oeillet Bengale this morning; will get out my mini of Magie Noire later. Wearing it does something weird to my head, and I am too busy today to get whisked off to wherever it takes me.
Really liking the Oeillet Bengale.
Witchy in Magie Noire now!!
Anybody else doing NaNoWriMo? If you are, look me up (same user ID as here) – and look up the Perfumistas writing group: http://nanowrimo.org/forums/writing-groups-and-clubs/threads/175893
Every year I swear I will do NaNoWriMo, and every year I don’t. I salute you, though!
Well I’m in st lucia, so I opted to bring sores of what I thought might be good in warm tropical weather (and I don’t have anything too weird yet). So today in trying Tom Ford’s neroli de portofino. It smelled lovely and tropical going on but lasted maybe 5 minutes. I’ll have to give it a good 5 sprays before dinner to get a real taste. I don’t have a costume this year, but baby Walden (almost 6 months) has a cute superman sleeper for tonight’s festivities!
Uh, samples not sores…
I actually thought for a second that you had brought scores of perfumes with you!
Hahaha I brought about 7 different sample scents, does that counts as scores?? I guess it kind of is for someone just getting into perfume!
I just counted how many samples I have in my purse in case of a perfume emergency and I don’t quite have a score–only 17. I am clearly a little over the edge :-/
SOTD was supposed to be Oud Imperial (Perris), but since I will be going to the gym later thought I would spare everyone around me that lovely dark cloud 😉 So, SOTD is Signature Silver Mark (Jack Black), and SOTE will definitely be the Oud Imperial.
Happy Halloween everyone! 🙂
SOTD: Midnight Bath and Body Works for men
I am wearing this cologne because it contains caramel which I feel is fitting fir Halloween….BOO!
I almost chose Diesel Loverdos – licorice candy – yummy :)!
SOTD Dzongkha – have not worn it before and look forward to wearing it again. I tested Nu_be Carbon, which was challenging indeed – it smelled like an empty plastic milk jug or old rubber baby bottle nipple. (Too challenging to deal with all day.) My other choice was A*Men Taste of Fragrance which I will wear another time.
As for Halloween candy, we have Junior Mints, York Peppermint Patties – for the parents, and Mr. Goodbars (I think). We also got a package of tiny tubs of Play-doh in Halloween colors that we might give away.
Wow! You have great treats, and smell mysterious 😀 Have a fantastic evening.
Charogne by ELDO, and for the first time actually. It is weird – I get some sweetness, some leather and some flowers, but overall it is a strangely chemical, artificial scent. Later it becomes softer, warmer and more wearable.
Ooh I love Charogne! And I don’t mind the name either. That’s a great Halloween choice though 🙂
Yep, Voice of Reason was axed due to the buddhawood, which some people reacted to.
That was on my shortlist- but too warm for it. Like Matt, the masochist in me wanted to try to wear SM, but I just couldn’t do it.
So Bandit it was. Not scary for me, maybe for some others around me though 🙂
Thanks for the info!
It looks like all of the Lush perfumes our at least temporarily unavailable.
I was at the Lush store and they only had two frags, both solids. The clerk said that they are changing the packaging/containers.
Good morning fumies!
Ready for today’s challenge I uncapped my candy purple Katy Perry Purr perfume ready to dive into scary…. and then chickened out. As much as I love the bottle, I cannot abide the fragrance. Oh well.
Instead went for Biehl Parfumkunstwerke al02, which has a totally scary name… but is actually a beautiful comfort scent–generous sample courtesy of a lovely young clerk at Osswald. To my nose, it is a warmer, slightly more vegetal, and smokier version of Egoiste–but the two share a lot.
That sounds very appealing :).
I agree. Love Osswald, too.
Yeah, Purr sounds pretty scary…
Mmmmm … al02 is nice. FBW.
Not really spooky but the only scent I know of with a pumpkin note: ELdO Like This (Tilda Swinton). It is gorgeous and perfect for the sunny autumn day we have had here with a touch of frost in the night and bright, bright leaves (the few left on the trees).
I was inspired by learning yesterday that we now have ELdO scents available in Stockholm, Sweden. I promptly asked for my favourites, Like This and The Afternoon of a Faun, but alas, they had chosen just five or six scents, and I totally confused the SA who hoped to rope me into a bargain but had to admit she didn’t know the brand good enough to know what I was talking about. Oh well :).
Happy halloween everybody! Here in Sweden the tradition hasn’t really stuck so we might get young visitors tonight, or tomorrow, or not at all. But we have small chocolate bars and popsicles at the ready.
No need to be scary when you smell perfect for the season! Like This is such a nice fragrance 😉
That’s a nice one.
Ohhhh, I don’t know what to wear today. Help! I want to join in the spookiness. I am thinking either Dzing!, Wisteria Hysteria (which is very weird on me), or Like This Tilda Swinton (which is not super weird, but weird enough and wonderful for fall). Any thoughts? I’m feeling indecisive today.
Tough choice! Have not tried WH or TSLT, so can’t be much help deciding. I am wearing Dzing! and liking it, so there’s my two cents 😉
Would never wear this to the office of it were not Halloween. I am pretending that this is my Halloween costume, ha.
In my part of the city kids trick or treat in local shopping centers with their parents. So we usually don’t have to buy candy, although that’s not saying we don’t have some peanut m&ms on hand. Love them best when they are frozen.
Scent twins, with you then, Nebbe! You’ve convinced me. 🙂
I work tonight, and it will be fun because from 4-6 a bunch of the business downtown participate in “Halloweenie” where little kids come trick-or-treating downtown. So I will be handing out candy to them tonight at work. So fun!
Hooray! We smell strange and I like it!
Have a Happy Halloweenie – seeing all those kiddos in costume would seem like quite a treat!
SOTD is Chopard Casmir parfum; Luca Turin called it a “strange oriental.” I have loved it for years but it is pretty strange-a milky peach and tangerine over woods and vanilla.
I am embarrassed to admit that I buy a couple bags of chocolate Halloween candy and then sort them into “preferred” bowls. The stuff I like least I give away first, then the second most-disliked, and so on until if there is some left over I know I will eat it eventually. Sometimes I freeze it and am still eating Halloween candy on Valentine’s Day.
Sounds perfectly logical to me 🙂
Ditto! And who is to say that you aren’t giving out other’s favorites first…
Sounds like you have it down to a science, foxbins.
I think I might put on some Bandit or Tubereuse Criminelle when I get home from work.
Tubereuse Criminelle for me as well….are we the first to mention it today? Admit I’m accustomed to it now, so it’s not particularly odd anymore.
I went with TC in the end so we are scent twins! I remember smelling it for the first time and feeling horrified, then delighted a few hours later. Now I just feel delighted, but most people would probably consider it odd.
I like Biehl al02. I get a stewed fruit note from it. I like to wear it in the fall during apple season. I’ll likely wear it one day next week.
Good stuff!
I chose to wear Tokyo Milk Dark Destiny, part of the Fate and Fortune collection. I chose it primarily because of its sweet, slightly fetid smell. It reminds me of the American Horror Show version of New Orleans.
I considered wearing Tubereuse Criminelle, because the opening at least is pretty strange, but in the end went with Hypnotic Poison (the name and bottle seemed appropriate for Halloween).
Will probably pick a Slumberhouse, but haven’t decided which one yet.
They’re all pretty weird. I just couldn’t face one today, even Pear and Olive.
They are more interesting than wearable, aren’t they? Anyway, change of plans: ended up with Aftelier Ancient Resins, which is doubtless what well-dressed mummies wore in Ancient Egypt.
Me too. I chose Zahd – for the blood red color and dark red velvet scent.
I am wearing L’Elephant Kenzo, which is both a little weird and appropriate for Holloween because it has a sort of hovering persisting note of “red hot” candy balls.
Yeah, cinnamon Red Hots!
Not necessarily weird or spooky, my choice for today (out of limited options) was AC Rose Anonyme. It feels mystic and otherworldly today, in our damp, misty, socked-in valley, and also calming…..much needed, given the challenge of trying to get my crazy 3 year-old twin boys to stand still long enough for me to make ghost costumes for them. Only for them to tell me this morning that they don’t want to be ghosts.
I have been thinking of buying the Olfactive Studio sample set that our Sephora is carrying. I may pick it up today, and switch to Chambre Noir this afternoon. Probably still not weird or spooky to most, but I can easily imagine the stewed richness as a thick purple potion.
We don’t get many trick-or-treaters at our house (and we’ll be out most of the time with the boys, anyhow), so I think I’ll have lots of mini-chocolates left over 🙂
Yay for Halloween – my favorite holiday!
This year, I’m recycling an old (and somewhat lame) costume and going as a vampire to DH’s work party. Same scent I wore with this one before, too. I still have a tiny bit of Messe de Minuit in my decant, and I do think this is the creepiest fragrance I have. Honestly smells like a crypt! One in the graveyard of a Gothic church – all old stone, cold air and a hint of mildew and dead roses. The last time time I wore this , I had one guy tell me my fragrance was perfect. Now I’m off to pay too much for a wig ’cause I can’t find the one I wore before.
Our neighborhood is new to us this year, and we have conflicting reports from our neighbors on the number of trick-or-treaters. So I just buy a few bags of whatever I like and take the leftovers to movies with me for the rest of the year. 🙂
Messe de Minuit is the perfect Halloween fragrance! It makes me think of incense from the crypt, too. This would have been my choice for today, but my sample is long gone. Hope you find a great bargain on a wig, and have fun. Be well.
Thanks, you too!
Happy Halloween! I’m wearing Angel today, because that’s the weirdest scent I own. It may not seem weird because of its popularity, but it really is very unique. I’m staying home and giving out lots of chocolate to the little ones in my neighborhood, so I am looking forward to that.
I almost went with Angel today as well. I like it, but it definitely wears me and not the other way around. I am glad I own a lovely mini of it, but I use it mostly for sniffing sessions when I need a perk.
Wearing Rien Intense Incense. I was a little scared to try it since even the manufacturer advised to apply with caution and it’s big and rubbery weird on me at the moment but since I’m not working or in class today I can do what I want. My runner-ups were Lush’s The Bug and CBIHP Invisible Monster. This theme was so interesting
Do you have a preference between Rien and Rien Intense Incense?
It’s been at least a year since I tried the original, but I think I prefer it but then I generally like leather scents
I was having a hard time deciding: ELdO Rien, Montale Aoud Cuir d’Arabie, CdG Tar…. I decided on CB:IHP Wild Hunt which smells as dark and woodsy as a Blair Witch camping trip.
Loooove Wild Hunt and didn’t even consider it for today.
Booooooo-whaaaaaa-haaa-haaaa everyone and Happy Halloween.
I’m sitting at my desk dressed as a killer tomato and my ‘stuffing’ is making it hard to sit in my desk chair! lol
We had trick or treating this morning for the children and grandchildren of our employees. The children paraded through the halls of the office, had cider and doughnuts, and got candy from all of us to take home. Nice and safe and weatherproof.
I had Dots and Tootsie rolls and Tootsie roll pops for my treats. The kids at home tonight will get the same. I think the oldies but goodies are the best when it comes to candy. Not to mention I have this weird addiction to Tootsie pops. Kind of a pacifier effect when I get stressed.
I’m wearing Etro’s Messe de Minuit, because it always smells of moldering churchyards and damp dank places (and of course I mean that in the very best of ways) and thus perfect for Halloween…..and I guess for tomatoes, too, after they’ve passed their prime. 🙂
Scent twins! 🙂
Triplets! Absolute Scentualist is joining us in MdM. Yay!
Yay! I love this stuff. Vampire went right back into the wardrobe so I could dab more MdM on. Does anyone know if the current formulation is still just as dank, dark, somewhat moldy as the version I have? It’s so perfect!
I don’t even know if it’s still sold. Maybe all of us weird sisters should go in on a split if so. I just used up the last of my decant. 🙁
I was planning on Olympic Orchids Fleurs de Glacé but have a headache that wouldn’t have held up to it. Am commando right now but will try something later. Happy Halloween to all!
I thought about wearing Tuberose Criminelle but in the end I went with Andy Tauers Dark Passage. Fitting name and the scent is definitely a weird patchouli!
No trick-or-treaters here, having a quiet evening listening to Faure’s Requiem which my choir will be performing this weekend on All Souls Sunday.
As a build-up, wore Tokyo Milk Arsenic yesterday – I guess it is pretty weird to be wearing a deadly poison. And today: Tokyo Milk Bittersweet. Both the Tokyo Milk bottles are pitch black with pictures of bugs. The Bittersweet is a delicious floury cocoa. Goes with the trick or treat chocolates? Did not grow up with Halloween – so watching it with mirth from a distance.
I LOVE Bittersweet. I sometimes forget and simply call it Cake Batter.
yes!
Found my decant of CBIHP I Am A Dandelion, so that has to be the weirdest thing I own. Though it isn’t that strange – the opening is a bit grassy, but then it becomes a very quiet skin scent. Our neighborhood gets a fair number of trick or treaters but we have little ones of our own, who are generally eating and getting their bottle around that time, so don’t think I’ll bother turning on our light. What a scrooge! Maybe I’ll pick up some candy later today to put on the porch.
So I picked up a big bag of candy and will sit outside with the girls and give that out til it is gone. Then we’ll turn the light off 😉 I already set aside a few Reese’s Pieces for myself. The bag is mixed Whoppers, Milk Duds, lollipops and Reese’s. After that, planning to watch Rosemary’s Baby. Never seen it before! Last year’s movie was the Exorcist, which I also had not seen.
Sounds like a great evening!
SOTD is Etro Messe de Minuit (pre-reformulation I think) with a little Black Widow spritzed over the top. If it fades before the night wraps up, I might put on some PdC Vampire, an awesome cheap thrill that’s all berries, violet and chocolate.
It’s been pretty nasty outside with rain changing to sleet and then to snow, so while the kids want to go out (Thing 1 and Thing 2 are going as a warewolf and Superman respectively though Thing 1 is mad because her costume had to come from the boys’ section, younger son is going as a ghost pirate and if we take wee lil one out at all, she has a dragonfly costume) we will probably just make a quick trip up the street and back.
We don’t usually give out candy since we’re out in the thick of things, and it has been such a busy day since the older kids are off from school I might be one of those types who turn off their light once we get back ;).
I’m wearing Hilde Solani Confetto because it’s very candyish.
This year, we’re handing out Tootsie Rolls and Snickers. I can’t dress up at work and we don’t have any parties to go to (staying in and watching scary movies instead), but I did my nails up in cobwebs and skulls!
I didn’t pack a costume or anything particularly spooky in my travel bag, but I *am* wearing all black today, and Back to Black to match.
Chypre Mousse won the day! It feels sufficiently weird and just right. Happy Halloween, everyone!
Chypre Mousse was choice no. 2.
I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka today. it seemed right for the day in a Tim Burton movie sort of way.
Let’s start a rumour that Tim Burton designed the Lolita Lempicka bottle!
I’m in!
Yes!!!
Passage d’Enfer, which doesn’t really go with my elf costume: green medieval dress, leaf necklace, and brass-wire pointy ears. (I always said that Galadriel wears Apres L’Ondee.) The great thing about working in nerdy high tech is that you can wear this stuff to work. Usually. One year before our division was sold off Upper Management issued a decree against costumes, so everybody came as either an uptight manager or a nerd.
I’m giving out small plastic teddy bears in Halloween costumes (ghost, mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, pumpkin) because if I have candy in the house I’ll eat it.
Nooooooo … I always think of Galadriel in Chanel No. 19. That other chick (whose name is escaping me right now, but you know who I mean – the one played by Liv Tyler) is the one I imagine in Apres L’Ondee.
Arwen!
My favorite female character was Eowyn – she would wear PdN Vie de Chateau.
Yes, Arwen! And you’re absolutely right about Eowyn – VdC would be perfect for her. 🙂
I finally put Secretions Magnifique on skin today. Hooo, boy! It is vile. I’d sniffed it on paper, recoiled in giggling horror and gave the sample away for another perfumista to experience. Then another sample landed on my doorstep and sat in its plastic envelope unopened until now.
I think this stuff has a future as a diet aid. I put it on before breakfast, and then did NOT want to eat. Tried to scrub it off, but it is tenacious. The opening smells of biohazard bins left unemptied for too long. Finally it dies down to an iodine and briny musk thing, but it still has a dank vibe. Strangely, I’ve asked for reactions from non perfumistas today, and one woman found it “pleasant” and another gentleman said it was “quietly calm.” Too weird. Is there some secret perfumista merit badge program for wearing this in public? 💡
You are brave. Have you seen Katie Puckrik’s video review? I watched her dabbing it on, and dabbing it on, and saying “I can’t smell it” and dabbing some more on… and I was saying to myself, “Girl, are you going to regret THAT later!”
I tried it expecting, um, “boy juice” as a friend described it to me – but what I got was Sex Crime. Blood, something metallic, something (yes) “boy juice,” and for some reason it actually made me feel afraid. Still don’t know why, but Une Rose has the same effect on me. I want to run away from myself with that on my skin.
Mals, three people are still mad at me for accosting them and unexpectedly waving the back of my hand under their nose and gleefully cackling “Smell it!” while trying not to turn green and betray the disgust I felt. It was akin to smelling questionable milk and then asking your SO to smell it just in case you’re wrong, only about 100x worse.
Your reaction is similar to mine. After my stomach stopped heaving and I went in for another masochistic sniff, I thought,”Blech. Law & Order SVU crime scene. No thank you!” and promptly found a new home ffor my 10ml bottle which was included in a set. Surprisingly, it swapped very quickly. *shivers at the very scent memory*
Katie Puckrik’s video cracked me up! I had smelled SM by then, and when she kept putting more on, it was like a horror movie, and I was saying, NO, don’t, DON’T do that–and then her face, when she reacts. Priceless.
I don’t think I’ll ever put SM on my skin again. I can see where you get Sex Crime out of it. It’s vile. I cannot imagine it sprayed on 😯 Sorry Une Rose hits you that way. I wonder if it is cashmeran. Sometimes the overdose of cashmeran annoys me, but some days I smell UR and think it’s amazing, a full-bodied rose with earth, stems and thorns.
I was surprised by the blood/metal in it. Was not expecting that.
I don’t *think* I have a reaction to cashmeran – I own at least a few things that have noticeable cashmeran in them, and I don’t mind it. I think it’s Karanal (a woody amber material) that gives Une Rose that edge… not sure, but I think so. I was surprised by my visceral reaction to that one, too. I mean, I literally wanted to go hide under the bed, except that my arm was still attached to the rest of me.
It was hard to me to choose anything to follow the theme: I don’t think I own a single perfume that I would consider quirky, weird or spooky. So I decided to go with my office’s theme Ghosts and I’m wearing Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules – a perfume that appears and disappears on me unpredictably.
We’ll end-up not being at home in the evening but while I still planned to give out candies, I bought Lindt and Ghirardelli truffles and chocolates – all in dark chocolate. I know that kids prefer milk chocolate but I decided that 1) their parents might appreciate it for themselves; 2) you have to start train kid’s tastes at some point and 3) if anything’s left, I have to be able to eat that. Now it looks like I was right about that #3 😉
Happy Halloween to everyone!
Yum. I’m coming to your house for Halloween!
A woman after my own heart 🙂
That is what I call sound reasoning!
Vetiver de Guerlain.
I don’t care that it is a great classic, for me this smells like cheap plastic. You know, when you go to a dollar store where they have a toy section, and those toys give off this weird pastic scent.
Whenever I wear it, and I do wear it from time to time, I get this vision of plastic doll heads. (severed doll heads on the Halloween day)
I was looking for something strange in my collection when I saw the creepy Marni doll staring at me with that evil grin. So my scent today was Marni which isn’t strange but I started to wonder if the doll comes alive on Halloween. To be on the safe side I wore her perfume.
I’m considering leaving the hubband to tend to candy duty and going up to take a hot bath. No signs of any trick-or-treaters yet. We only had 5 last year so I’m not expecting many. I bought decent candy so if we’re stuck with it at least it’s stuff we’ll eat eventually.
The Marni doll *is* creepy, but the fragrance isn’t. I like your logic; anointing yourself against the off chance of mischief. I’m not sure whether to wish you lots of cute trick-or-treaters or enjoyment of good candy. Perhaps the best of both. Enjoy!
My comment got lost in the internets so I am posting a shorter version.
SOTD = Serge Lutens Chergui
I wore it today since I was on an Uncle Serge roll and thought Chergui was perfect for its hours-old blood color! It was also absolutely perfect for today’s weather – high 30s in the morning up to the 50s.
Nothing weird today, its too darn cold!! Fendi Theorema, one of my favourite winter scents. Winter! AAARRGGHHH! LOL 😉
Oh, and Milky Way bars – original and simply caramel.
I should buy candy I don’t like – every year I say that but I never DO it!
I am wearing DSH Cuir et Champignons… I thought leather and mushrooms sounded pretty weird, woodsy and perfect for fall and Halloween!
SOTD has been Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Endymion. It is beautiful. I have worn it occasionally for many years now, and it still smells just as nice as when it was new. It doesn’t seem to age, so it must be under a spell like it’s namesake.
I always think of vampires and how they don’t age when I think of Endymion, but he was really a shepherd who was so beautiful that the moon goddess fell in love with him.
Tonight we are hoping for trick or treaters, but it may rain a bit, so who knows. My 15 year old son chose our candy mix this year. It’s Reese’s PB cups, Hershey’s bars, Twizzlers, and lollipops. I hope it is all gone soon . . . thankfully none of it appeals to me so far.
Have now tried my sample of Invisible Monster. This is so wow– damp earth, warm yellow flowers, sunshine. There is something about the warmth that just coils under my ribs.
Darn, Invisible Monster would have been a great one. I just had a complete imagination fail today. I blame severe lack of sleep.
I went with L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore–candy and leather say Halloween to me. Plus it’s a favorite of my elder nephew, who was a zombie this year. His little brother, age 3, was Iron Man. We saw another little Iron Man tonight, and also a little Iron Woman. The 3-year-old’s year-and-a-half old nephew (don’t ask) was Mickey Mouse, which tipped his uncle’s fondness for him into frank adoration. I also saw a father and his toddler both dressed as black-and -white cows, complete with bright pink udders. If that doesn’t earn the dad some bonus points, I don’t know what would.
after reading about Cumming by Alan Cumming yesterday, that was my pick which perfectly with my zombified John McEnroe outfit. The dirt gave it an extra dimension. 😉
I waited for months before finally buying my first FB of a smell bent…I wore Walk of Shame on Halloween, and I loved it! Terrific scent to me, unlike anything else in my decidedly unorthodox collection. It was between that, CdG Tar, and EldO La Fin du Monde. All of those are terrific for fall and this season, but I had to give the new bottle a whirl. Great!
