Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-October 2014

Poplar trees reflection

Our same old open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the perfume you're saving your pennies for, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

The perfume I’m wearing today happens to be the same I’m saving my pennies for, Hermès Eau de Pamplemousse Rose.

    Hello, hello!
Is everyone having a nice Autumn to enjoy? I hope you do!

The perfume that I’m wearing today is Maria Candida Gentile Leuco, it’s one of the three new releases from the house presented at Pitti.

I’m not saving perfume pennies at the moment as I just bought Le Galion Iris last week, it arrived few days ago. I’m happy to have it in my collection. What I know for sure is that I could use some more Oeillet Bengale ;)

How do you like the Iris? So far I love all the Le Galion re-releases but that’s one i haven’t tried.

I’m in love with this one. My favorite perfume from Pitti. I reviewed it on my blog if you’d like to read some detailed impressions of mine.

Thank you! It was your review of Alambar that got me to try it (and buy it, and subsequently, to try others from the LO line). The Iris sounds wonderful…….

Glad you liked Alambar. It’s such a plushy perfume. I think you’d like Laboratorio Olfattivo newest one – Patchouliful.

I have not had much luck lately finding something new to love. I like the dry down of Mojave Ghost but I don’t want to have to wait. I want to love it right out of the gate.
I have been considering Tiziana Terenzi March XIX for sometime. I already have their Ecstasy and love it. A wonderful incense, reminiscent of Chaos. I may fold. I have been very good lately, and it bores me.

I’m wearing Profumi del Forte By Night, White. I have an uncomfortable cold and this, to me, is such a nice comfort scent.

Question: I have a gift card for Saks, and I’m trying to decide if in addition to a bottle of Cuir Beluga, would I like Rose Nacree du Desert (which I DO love but only have a 5 ml decant) or Liu, blind buy……I heard Liu is similar in feel to No. 5 but does anyone know if it’s lighter? Sweeter? Thoughts? I really kind of want the bottle it comes in. I also saw on the Nieman Marcus site today that Mayotte is listed in the Les Parisiennes collection…I’ve never smelled Mayotte but is it anything like the AA Vanille Ylang? Because I didn’t like the AA, but the notes in Mayotte usually do appeal.

As much as I love the Guerlains, I prefer No. 5 in this case. Liu read as baby diaper and jasmine to my nose. I wouldn’t call it lighter than No. 5. YMMV

Also, don’t spend the asking price for Mayotte (unless you have to have the bee bottle) since it is the same juice as the former Mahora, which is still available on ebay. Mahora/Mayotte is a beautiful frangipani fragrance with supporting white florals and a light sandalwood/vanilla base. Hope this helps.

It does help! Thanks for the input, No. 5 tends to overwhelm my skin so I can only imagine what Liu would do……

Liu has fewer aldehydes than No. 5, to my nose, but I also got a lot of “flat” jasmine out of it plus lots of powder. Baby powder, not exactly diaper (clean or otherwise), but I found it very dull on me and I suggest you try it first. I liked Vega – also similar to No. 5 but warmer in the base – far, far better than Lieu.

I have Mayotte/Mahora and agree it is very beautiful, but to me the dominant note is tuberose. I’m sorry I can’t compare it to the AA fragrance, as I haven’t tried that, but Mayotte is a very strong white floral. I don’t usually like tuberose in perfumes (don’t even like it in the flowers!) but in this one it is softer and less screechy perhaps because of the addition of frangipani. I have tried Liu and in my memory at least it is more green and astringent than #5. It’s also a beautiful scent.

The AA is super super sweet on me. Thanks for the input, I have quite a few big florals right now….I haven’t tried Mahora in years, maybe I’ll hunt down a sample.

I recommend against a blind buy. Just think how disappointed you’ll be if you won’t like the perfume you buy instead of the one that you know you like. And those expensive bottles are not that easy to swap or sell without a loss.
Ask your online friends – maybe somebody has a sample to share/swap – and then decide if you want it.

Liu is nice. I have a vintage LD. It has that kind of restraint that No 5 edt has, and is very tailored, very nice, but I dont’ really think it’s blind buy worthy. Spend a heck of a lot less and get a bottle of No 5 edt! Buy the one you already love with your gift card.

I tried Liu after hearing so much about it, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed. On me, it didn’t have the presence of No 5. If I had the choice, I would get the one I love and try my blind buy experiments at the online discounters.

Definitely try before buying. I have both old and new Liu, which are nice but not in my top 100 (although the original black Liu bottle is fabulous). Mayotte is a love it or hate it perfume, I think. You might love one or both of these, but you just as well might wish you’d saved your money for something else.

Well, the black bottle, with its weird “tea canister” box, is in the top five of bottles, seriously. I just happened to see a very good price for the 2005 version (not the current bee bottle, but black-top box) and succumbed to that completist urge of collectors, sigh. I tend to agree with LT who called it “a bit of a yawn,” but those who like powdery perfumes should give it a try.

Mahora would have played well in the over-the-top eighties when heady white florals and shoulder pads ruled. It has a lovely, green sap top note that’s fresh but the heart has frangipani which for me has associations with the $8 bottles of fragrances in Waikiki drugstores. I don’t like neroli, jasmine, and tuberose so the drydown of Mahora does not work for me. It’s nothing like the sweet Ylang et Vanille which is a very well done juice but just not my category.
Liu has an aspect of No. 5 but, to my nose, has greater depth and sillage. Just a tiny bit sweet but really, more bittersweet, in that it instantly recalls art deco Paris. This aldehydic floral takes you back to a bygone era of time and perfumery.

I haven’t decided on a fragrance of the day yet, but I wanted to see what everyone’s recent cheap thrills are. I picked up a rollerball a couple of weeks ago of a rose scent from UO for $14. Not the most complex, but I’m enjoying it.

Cheap thrill of the moment is Maroma Vanilla. It’s just a basic, fairly sweet vanilla. I also really like CO Bigelow Lemon. I’ve been wearing it on days when I have classes (i’m a fitness instructor and any perfume I wear tends to travel around the room, so I try to keep it light, basic, and minimal on those days).

I just checked and it’s still there. There’s some patchouli in the base of Krazy, which I love. It’s not head shop, but it’s evident. If you’re okay with patch, I’d say go for it!

Currently they’re out of stock (at least online) to be repackaged, and I’m worried the new versions will come with a price hike, but I’ve been wearing my Lust solid from Lush a ton lately. I think it was not even $12, and I actually prefer it to the slightly more expensive spray versions–the solids have the lowest concentration of perfume, and I wouldn’t want it any stronger/louder!

That’s a good idea. I sniffed Lush and Karma the other day and thought they were strong; I have Rose Jam, and it’s definitely a rose-musk bomb (in the best possible way), but I think I’d prefer a solid of Karma or Lust.

SOTD is Coco edp b/c it’s cool and drizzly out. Ideally I’m saving pennies for a bottle of Amouage Beloved, but we’ll see how that goes. I can get easily distracted! I’m spending a lot of time re-discovering neglected decants, etc, in my own collection. I’m enjoying taking a look back at fragrances that I was only lukewarm about a few years ago. I’m fairly smitten with Natori edp, so I may ask for that as an upcoming present for birthday or Xmas since it’s relatively inexpensive.

Q: Anyone have any comments about the difference between the Diptyque Eau Duelle edt vs. edp? I have the edt which I like very much, but I’m now wondering if I should make the effort to explore the edp, whether it’s that different. Thanks ahead!

You know, I find the Eau Duelle edt to be syrupy on my skin, while the edp is more of a dry vanilla (my favorite side of the vanilla spectrum).

      Worth exploring!

Funny you ask, because I was just reflecting on this the other day. For Volutes, I prefer the edt to the edp, since the edp is heavier on the dried fruits, and I love the cherry vanilla tobacco of the edt. Amazing drydown, too.

      :)

I need to revisit Volutes again. I tested Volutes when it came out, but I can’t remember which formula, and I almost liked it, but not quite. Maybe I’d like the other version more. One of these days I’m just going to have to get to a shop that sells it so I can test directly. I really like the whole Diptyque vibe and I’d probably like a bunch more of them than I’ve tested.

Volutes was one I really wanted to try and after checking out several blogs, it seems most people seem to prefer the EdT to the EdP for Volutes – so that’s definitely one to go EdT first I guess! I wish I could go to a shop – there’s barely any around here that carry Diptyque and the few that do have a limited selection (basically no EdPs and only 5 or 6 of the scents). :( I’ve read that when you order from the Diptyque website they *can* on occasion be quite generous with the samples, so I’m debating ordering one of the cheaper rollerballs or solids to see what I get, or ordering one from Aedes where I’m guaranteed 7 samples!

I haven’t tried Eau Duelle in EdP concentration (I like and wear EdT) but my comparison between to versions of Volutes resulted in buying EdT – I liked it much more. And Vanessa from Bonkers about Perfume had the same reaction. So there is a good chance that Eau Duelle EdP is different enough to make a difference, which you might not like ;-)

Yeah same reaction–I’ve only ever tried Eau Duelle in EDT, but the L’Ombre EDP is significantly different and to my nose, more appealing than the EDT. The other point of reference I have for Eau Duelle EDT is the comparison to Vanille 44–I’d be curious to smell the EDP in hopes that maybe Diptyque had managed to split the difference both in price and scent between those two!

OTOH, if you like what you have, why mess with that!

I had l’Ombre in edt and I though it was so smacking powerful with that tomato vine that I can’t even imagine what the edp would smell like, unless it is “better” b/c it’s more well behaved.

I requested a sample of L’ombre in EdP from Aedes. It came marked only as L’ombre, so I can’t be positive that it was the EdP and not the EdT, but while it was quite green I don’t recall getting smacked by tomato vines but now I feel the need to resample and double check! And maybe go outside to my tomato vines too! :)

          • C.H. says:
            12 October 2014 at 3:17 am

Yeah I wouldn’t say it’s objectively “better” just that in being noticeably deeper and rosier, and less green, it happens to appeal more to my personal tastes. But along those lines, I might like a deeper version of Eau Duelle too, was my thinking in bringing up the comparison.

    • AnnS says:

Thanks everyone for your comments. I do know that there can be enough difference in the edts and edps from Diptyque that it really matters. I had tested Volutes – can’t remember which one – but I didn’t care for it so much and couldn’t find a sample of the other. It occurs to me that I’d like the other version… I was poking around sites to find samples of the edp of Eau Duelle. I find the edt just about perfect, so it’s hard for me to say if I’d like the edp. I do really appreciate everyone’s comments! It seems like for Diptyque there is “camp edt” and “camp edp”!!

Definitely update! I think I’m about to order Volutes, L’ombre, Duelle, Tam Dao and Do Son in both forms… and maybe Philosykos, but I’m still on the fence about that one. I’m also thinking of getting samples of the L’eau du Trente-Quatre, 34 Boulevard Saint Germain and Essences Insensees. Yeah… I really need Diptyque to have a sample pack or something. I’m still pretty early on in my exploration of scent, so I haven’t identified which types of scents and notes appeal to me most and least – hence the need to try EVERYTHING. :)

Currently testing Cuir X on one hand and Histories de Parfum 1725 on the other. It’s a little hard to get a read on 1725 since the sillage from Cuir X is whomping it but so far I like it. Cuir X is a big smooth slightly astringent leather that I like but won’t be saving my pennies for. When I have money to spend on perfume again it will be for Desarmant.

      Hi Rena!
I asked for a sample of Cuir X with my Le Galion Iris order and when I tried it there was one thing that struck me. It smells almost like Parfum d’Empire Cuir Ottoman, only that Cuir X has less of that plastic impression at the begining. I was surprised, especially that both are from Corticchiato.

Cuir X is darker colored in my mind while Cuir Ottoman is more in the tawny range if I remember correctly and Cuir Ottoman also felt rounder. Will have to find my Cuir Ottoman sample to compare

This morning I am trying one of the new MiN New York Scent Stories: Barrel. It’s rich, boozy, leathery, spicy etc. Actually kind of awesome. I think it’s the coriander but something in here reminds me vaguely of mustard, not in a bad way.

This morning I am wearing Aedes de Venustas, the one in the purple bottle, which I was given a small sample of by the nice staff people at Kuhl-Linscomb in Houston. (I actually used up the first sample and went back and begged them for a second one.) There is something fascinating about its tartness and I keep trying to decide if I need a bottle or not. Tomorrow I plan to go visit Saks and try the new By Kilian Addictive States of Mind scents. I hope I wont’ like one too much!

I love Intoxicated from the new Kilian’s. Almost bought it. I didn’t care too much for Light My Fire. Smoke for the Soul was like smoking a joint and then having roast chicken with herb butter. I kinda liked it because it was one of the more interesting things they’ve released. I don’t know if I’d want to smell like it though.

        OK here is my report!
Intoxicated ~ This was pretty nice. It reminded me quite a lot of Volutes in the EDP, because it has a lot of sweetness. I tried it on one wrist. Pretty good staying power but it keeps getting sweeter all the time.

Light My Fire ~ I recoiled from this one on the paper card. It smelled like a cherry coke or some kind of awful root beer. Might take some getting used to.

Smoke for the Soul ~ This was my favorite by far. Yes it is somewhat like Black Afgano which I also like a lot, but what it most reminded me of was Patchouli Luxe by CdG which I also love. It’s very very dark and mysterious. I may want to buy this one eventually.

    Sunny day here in Toronto.
SOTD is A*Men Pure Wood. It finally arrive here yesterday and I went and grabbed a bottle as soon as the store called.
The bottle looks as horrible as described by many people on the net. Maybe if it had been done in a darker 2-tone colour… Anyway.
This is something that I really should have tried first. But, impulsive me jumped right in.
There is nothing really wrong with Pure Wood. There is also nothing in there that I really needed. I get the cypress and the oak notes. There is also a caramel note, not too sweet, more like a salted caramel. I can also detect a slight nuttiness to it.
I was really hoping for a much dryer scent with more wood- it IS called Pure Wood after all. It’s not a bad scent. This is the office friendly A*Men flanker: not too loud, not too noticeable, hardly there. I will certainly wear it to work- my Amouages are too loud for work- but, in my book, office friendly is not a compliment.

I pre-ordered the bottle 2 months ago. I did try it in the store, but even veteran perfume addicts occasionnally get taken in by top notes. What can I say? I was too impulsive!
Really it’s not a bad scent. I just had high hopes and expectations.

I received so many lovely samples the last few days I am in heaven. Today, I’m testing out the Stephen Jones CdG Wisteria Hysteria. It’s really interesting, but I’m not sure it’s love, although I can’t stop sniffing my wrist. It almost has a metallic sharpness to it, but it’s also kind of soft and powdery. Very bizarre, but I am definitely enjoying it.

Just got back from a steamy walk. It actually rained here this morning and was relatively cool but is warming up quickly. Think I’ll break out the little decant of Mitsouko perfume to wear to the grocery store. I just can’t wait any longer to wear it and it may help me feel put together what with my insanely frizzy hair and overall feeling of damp.
I nave a bunch of untested samples I really should work on but I’m feeling a little wary. Grabbed Sadanne the other day before I realized I was getting a headache and felt trapped in one of those liquid filled strawberry hard candies. Probably ruined an interesting fragrance for myself for quite some time.

Robin, I love the photo! Autumn is my favorite season, and I live in Connecticut, one of the best places to experience it. :-)

Today I am wearing my brand-new Telaal perfume oil by Nabeel Perfumes. I had been wanting to try Arabian perfumes for a long time now. It was the bottles that first hooked me. I love the intricate bottles! It’s taken me a heckuva long time to research and then actually FIND a place to buy them from that didn’t charge me more for the shipping than for the actual juice. But I had shoulder surgery three weeks ago and have had nothing much to do while recuperating.

Telaal is a lovely, ambery, woodsy, cozy oil that stays close to the skin and lasts for hours and hours. Notes (from retailer’s website): ” top lemon notes as fresh as the fruit itself which slowly dissipates into strong and sweet fragrance of rose and saffron. The base notes of precious amber wood, tec (sic, I believe they mean teak), oudh, vetiver and white musk”

The lemon and rose have eluded me so far. Everything else is there, well balanced.

I’m not going to mention the retailer unless Robin says it’s okay, but I got 20 ml of Telaal perfume oil for $14 plus shipping. Can’t remember how much shipping was, but it wasn’t bad.

I was hoping for a delivery from the mailperson today but no luck. I ordered a decant of Corsica Furiosa and just realized another greenie I recently discovered, Ninfeo Mio, share a common note- lentisque! I think this may be what is attracting me to both of these and now my mission is to find other fragrances that sport this note so I can sniff and compare, so please chime in if you know of any =)

Since my delivery didn’t come, I am wearing Jo Malone Oud and Bergamot Dry Oil Spray. I’m not too keen on the perfumes in this line but I do like the oil spray as the scent lasts longer. I bought a 100ml bottle sometime in the last 6-8 months and I am down to my last quarter inch and its a done deal. Considering repurchasing because I like to kill two birds with one stone, simultaneously scenting and moisturizing my skin.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and odiferous weekend =)

In the morning, I put on Infusion d’Iris, because it was just such a perfect day for it (cold, drizzly fall day). Then I went to the mall and got some samples. So, now I have Jo Malone Saffron on one arm, Bvlgari Black on another, and samples of Jo Malone Saffron and Amber Patchouli, and Prada Infusion d’Homme and Amber pour Homme Intense – all for me ;). The Saffron is good, first Jo Malone I am seriously considering

I like JM Saffron and would buy a small bottle of it – too bad it comes only in 100ml bottles.

Hallo Guys!Happy weekend to you all!OK:so I have a personal conundrum…I somehow, and for some unexplainable reasons, lost some of my enthusiasm for perfumes. This happened right after I FINALLY secured a “missing puzzle piece” in my collection:Iris Silver Mist. And I made sure I had a lifetime’s worth of it too.Lol.Back then I told my perfumed bestie Merlin, that my collection is now complete. And it still feels that way.Only now,I’m wondering WHERE TO FROM HERE?Lol!!I’ve also started to streamline my collection, using more of the good, precious stuff, and selling off things I do not really really adore.I go DAYS without perfume though, and I don’t want to talk about it so much anymore. Also the hunt for vontage/shiny and new,has subsided dramatically! Is this in other words normal?Have you guys experienced this?Or is this a natural part of feeling content with what you have?Your thoughts will be appreciated greatly!!Johano

Sounds normal, like a new part of a larger cycle, you know?

As for what next, see what strikes your fancy over the next months maybe. No need to force it, you’ll find out sooner or later :)

      Normal.
My enthusiasm has ebbed and flowed, depending on larger life issues. But I have always come back. ;)

Things don’t always burn at the same intensity! I’v also found that when I’m less consciously preoccupied with scent, I appreciate it in a quite different way. I’m really glad you are giving air time to some of your treasures:) Also, going without perfume for a while sometimes increases ones appreciation when one uses it again.

Might be a theorem, a corollary to which is: the second a FB purchase is ensconced, the fascination dissipates. I don’t even pretend to understand this phenomenon, but I recognize it as a hazard and am less freaked about it now than I was two years ago when I first fell down the rabbit hole. Time, and maybe some distance for a while, and things will get back to normal (if that’s what we’re calling it). :)

You described what happens to me exactly! And it freaked me out too, when I got all excited during the purchase, but didn’t even bother taking it out of the car once I got home!

Thanks for sharing this, Johanob. Though this hasn’t happened to me perfume-wise, it has with other loves – to which I have then returned later in a deeper, different way. Like nebbe has said: part of a larger cycle, maybe? Maybe this is an indication that perfume has become completely part of you, without having to obsess about it? Just some thoughts.

    G’morning all :)
I went to a gig last night so am a bit slow at work this morning. It was Justin Townes Earle, who I’ve seen a few times now and always look forward to his tours. I wore Epic as I figured it would suit a big space with lots of people.

This morning is Baiser Vole edp.

That sounds like fun–haven’t seen him in concert (saw his dad and John Hiatt last summer). So it was a large venue?

I’ve seen Steve Earle a couple of times over the years too and am a big fan of both their music, but JTE’s style is a little more contemporary.
This time he played in an Art Deco theatre- The Astor- that’s now mostly used for a smallish-sized ‘intimate’ concerts and performances.

SOTE is Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail accompanied by a rum-based old fashioned cocktail, and good goddess am I in heaven. Ms. Goodsir has a way with tobacco scents, which was precisely what I was looking for when I ordered the sample. The only mystery remaining to be seen is whether I order a (much) larger decant or go straight to a full bottle.

Today I wore nothing until half an hour ago when I shopped in local spendy scent/candles/giftshop and Spritzed Dzing on the back of my left hand and Dzonka on the back of my right. I like both, and since the shop is lovely about samples, I have one I’d reach to explore or share with my mom. I think she might like the Dzonka.

SOYD was l’Inspiratrice by Divine, and SOTD is vintage Diorella EDT. Which has that overripe quality that makes it so utterly appealing to me. It’s another gloriously sunny autumn day here today. We’ve been very blessed weather wise these past 2 months.

I am seriously eyeing Route du the (Barney’s) and Frederic Malle Outrageous – on my Washington DC trip, where variety is much greater than at home! Thoughts about these? Spritzed them at Barney’s, and loved both, but that was after I went overboard at Blue Mercury and Sephora — with not a spot of arm space left! so maybe I can’t really tell whether what I loved was indeed Route du The and Outrageous or a symphony of different spritzes earlier in the day.
