Happy Birthday to Mick Jagger, who turns 71 today.
We're having our usual open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the perfume you own but never wear anymore, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Lately I’ve been in the market for a new scent. I’ve come to the realization that the majority of my collection consists of light, fresh scents and I’m looking for something a bit more dramatic. I don’t really have access to niche fragrances where I live so any mainstream suggestions that I should try out?
I have absolutely no access to any fragrances any where near where I live, so I buy both samples and fbs online, including ebay.
Even by ‘dramatic’ we need to know what type of scents you like – floral, woody, gourmand? – to know what to recommend. Could you tell us what you already like?
I do like orientals… In moderation.
I’d recommend Mona di Orio’s Tubereuse, classed as an oriental floral it is a stunner and NOT a typical tubereuse scent. In my top five frags.
Of course there are also the older school orientals like Shalimar
It does depend what you like, but I think the most reliable drama in the mainstream market is Tom Ford.
Smart. Violet Blonde and Black Orchid especially might be good here, to my mind.
I’ll third this – when I read your comment above, I immediately thought of Tom Ford, esp. the Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, which can still be found at discounters, and sometimes even in a 1 oz bottle. It is really delicious and not that heavy. Also, the Violet Blonde, and if you want to spend more, the Jasmine Rouge is outstanding.
You may also want to try the Jessica Simpson “Fancy” line – they are gourmand oritenals. Fancy Nights is a particularly well done gourmand patchouli that is like a lite version of Chanel’s Coromandel. Speaking of which, you could also easily test the orientals on the Chanel line: Coco Mademoiselle, Coco, Coco Noir, et.al….Good luck!
Adore Voile de Fleur (can’t manage the original Black Orchid) – delicious floral with a creamy oriental base.
Completely random suggestion, but maybe something at the Estee Lauder counter, like Tuscany Per Donna or Cinnabar or Private Collection? (Maybe they are too much in the way of oldies.) What you need it a nice SA whose primary goal is not to sell you the latest thing, but who wants to you to find a soul mate perfume.
Private Collection is a great idea, and/or the other fragrances marketed as part of that series–it’s been a little while since last I smelled them but I feel like they all have a bit more oomph than a lot of the market these days.
My sister has a bottle of cinnabar and I really love it. Definitely an option.
Fun game! Seconding flannery, do let us know what you have/like at present just for reference (and/or–what do you hate?) but I am sure we can stir up some drama 🙂
Some suggestions:
Bulgari Black
Dior Homme and Dior Homme Intense
YSL Opium and Paris
Seconding Black and Opium–and for some reason this makes me think of Dior Dune as well.
Dior Hypnotic Poison (I prefer the new edp it’s a bit more floral bit less play-doh)
Cartier Baiser Volé (Essence is a move away from light and airy but still maintaining a freshness)
Maybe Spicebomb?
Seconding Tom Ford, and adding Prada, and Bottega Veneta.
Caroline, my suggestion: Lancôme Bhengal – as it has both the freshness (some citrus) and oriental you seem to favor. Ex Fragrantica: “Top notes are ginger and mandarin orange; middle notes are apricot, osmanthus and jasmine; base notes are sandalwood and musk.”
It truly is a mix of fresh and oriental, i.e. it may just add that bass that you’d like to add to fresh accords.
Hypnotic Poison was my first thought. Not too heavy.
Bottega Veneta Eau Legère is nice, too, and sort of halfway between “light and fresh” and edgier mainstream. The leather is noticeable, but not too much in warm weather.
Why do you want to limit yourself by mainstream offerings? Going to the store for testing isn’t the only way to find something to like. Read some reviews, figure out what you might like, order samples either from brands’ sites directly or from one of the decanters. If you find a perfume you like, you’ll buy it online. If no – you can swap your samples with somebody to get more samples. If you’re looking for one-two new scents to add to your collection, you’ll spend some money on samples and postage for swaps, but you’ll find something much more interesting than what you can find in department stores.
These are super good ideas for anyone who wants to invest this amount of time and money (even if you’re a swapper, packing and postage adds up!), but I think it’s totally valid for someone to want a more straightforward approach. Not everyone need make each perfume purchase into a big project!
Also, I disagree about niche necessarily being more interesting. There are definitely gems to be found in department stores!
Marni doesn’t work for me, but if rose doesn’t tend to go sour on you, it’s worth trying.
Seconding Marni, and adding Roses by Chloé.
In the Department stores, check out the Guerlains who do “orientals” very well, including those non-exclusive scents carried by Department stores and internet discounters. Check out Chemist in the Bottle and Monsieur Guerlain blogs for very good descriptions of this line. Chanel, Cartier and Hermes are also very good lines who sell some of their most popular products in department stores and beauty chains.
If you want to go further afield, both Twisted Lily and LuckyScent are internet retailers who create very good sample collections every few months, which will give you a range of niche perfumes to try. (Subscribe to their websites for announcements of new sets or check the “sample” section of their websites occasionally) Several niche companies offer “Coffrets” which are collections of samples or minis of their perfumes across different styles.
P.S. Lucky Scent’s current sample collection is an offering of 13 very popular niche and quasi niche perfumes from different companies, featuring a variety of notes and styles.
I have no ties to Lucky Scent whatsoever, just passing info along.
Wearing the utterly lovely Sous le Toit de Paris today. I usually save it for cooler cloudy days but we’ve had some terrifically cool wet weather the past few days and even though it is late July it seems perfect for it. Love this stuff so glad I found a huge bottle of it on ebay for half the retail price 🙂
Wow, very jealous — I should put in an automatic ebay search myself.
Bingo! That’s how I did it 🙂
I adore Sous le toit de Paris! I think it works well in all weather except for winter. I was monogamous with it during my vacation last year.
LOL and I love it in winter and you are right this is one that can be worn several days in a row with no loss of appreciation 🙂
Oh my! Need to look at eBay more often.
I’ve been wearing this all week and could care less that it’s been during 80 degrees days.
Hook, line & sinker…
Happy Birthday Mr. Jagger. I just saw the pre – screening of “Get On Up” the other day . It is the story of James Brown. Mick Jagger is one of the producers of the movie. It is awesome. I recommend anyone who is a fan to go and see it.
SOTD is Burberry Brit. This is a sample I received. It was supposed to be a fragrance from the “Peony Sample Set”. I don’t really smell peony in it. It is an okay scent, but not a “stand out” type of fragrance.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Thanks, will have to look up that movie!
I chose Epice Marine today because I missed yesterday’s Jean Claude Ellena festivities. I got a huge, 12 hour headache and barely got out of bed. Thank goodness I was off!
So sorry…that’s way too long to have a headache.
SOTD = Hermes Terre d’hermes layered with Guerlain Mandarine Basilic
I am at the Montreal Trudeau airport with a long wait for my flight back to the U.S. Since I packed away every drop of perfume I had, I was commando this morning; however, I took the first opportunity to step in to duty free and sniffed away. I applied Terre d’Hermes thinking it was the Eau Fraiche version but was mistaken! So what does a perfumista do? Why yes, she goes hunting for another perfume to layer on top of it and, ta da, she smells even better!
I also just finally finished reading Alyssa Harad’s book Coming to My Senses: A Story of Perfume, Pleasure and an Unlikely Bride. What a nicely written book! All along, I felt like she was sitting next to me telling her stories. If you have not read it, you should. I highly recommend it!
I had a fabulous time on my cruise (this was #4) and will do a different one next year. Now, it’s back to reality 🙂
Such a good description of Alyssa’s book–and I’ll add, getting to sit with Alyssa and hear her stories is one of the most fun things ever, so I regard it as very kind of her to bottle that experience for us, so to speak 🙂
Brilliant idea on layering those two, now I want to try it!
I’m so glad you had fun on your cruise! Where do you think you’ll go next year?
I put a deposit on a 12-day cruise to the Baltics which will start and end in Copenhagen. Stops along the way include Hamburg, Stockholm, St. Petersburg. Tallin, Warnamunde (spelling? although I do know that it is a train ride away to Berlin).
Wow, that’s really something to look forward to 🙂
I’m thinking it is a Bombay Bling sort of summer day. It is just my older son and me home today and we’ve got nothing planned other than packing him up for his trip to Canada tomorrow, and ping pong in the back yard.
Totally random comment about a TV show. I don’t watch much, but occassionally I get hooked, I mean really hooked, on some series or other. Right now it is Extant, with Halle Berry. Episodes are made available each week through Amazon prime. Looking for a smart Sci Fi? Try Extant.
I’ll recommend one as well, My Love from Another Star is my find of the year. Available on Dramafever, Hulu & gooddrama.net.
Another South Korean Sci Fi that I am still recovering from, in a good way, is Snowpiercer. It can be “rented” from Amazon prime, but probably through other downloading (uploading?) outfits as well.
I’ve not seen this yet, but I do like good sci-fi. Thanks for the tip!
No fragrance yet today, but SOTD for the last couple of days was Noora by Swiss Arabian. This had been simmering on the back burner ever since I came across Musette’s review on PP a while back, and I finally sprang for a bottle. This is one unsniffed purchase I definitely do not regret. It is very concentrated, so only a tiny bit is needed, and it lasts for hours and hours even on my perfume-eating skin.
Does anyone here have any experience with the rest of the Swiss Arabian line? Not that I need more perfume, but after all, they are practically free.
Musette talked me into a tiny bottle of that too… I should never never never NEVER buy anything orange blossom unsniffed, not even decants. It is total soap on me. Nice soap, mind you, but soap. I often have that problem with OB. That seems to be a personal thing – a lot of people enjoy Noora, and I’d recommend it for a cheap thrill if you don’t normally have orange blossom issues.
The only problem I have with orange blossom is that it tends to put me to sleep, so some of my OB perfumes are strictly for nighttime use. It is actually handy to have a non-drug sleeping aid to use. I don’t actually smell Noora as an orange-blossom frag, perhaps because there are so many other notes in there they push it to the background. It is the same way for me with rose–I have a hard time identifying rose if it is buried under a lot of other notes.
How true — neroli = soap. Also, neroli = snooze…
OB is an accord that almost always works for me. It has a very relaxing affect on me also.
I have smelled and liked Kalemat and Kalemat Black 🙂 The first one has nuclear longevity!
Hello, hello! How is everybody doing? My parents went on a trip for a couple of days (they’ll be back on Wednesday) and the weather is so nice I just had to use the opportunity to hit the cycling road for 2 hours. And then after dinner I power-walked 4 miles. Feels great.
The perfume I’m wearing today is JUL ET MAD Aqua Sextius.
Before I hit the shower I want to ask those who have been following my Guerlain week – are you enjoying it?
Absolutely! You’ve made some of the lesser-known (to me) Guerlains some alive that I want to try and re-try them. There are so many facets to a Guerlain perfume that only a perfumista with a sophisticated nose like yours can pick out!
Aww… that is so sweet of you. I’m blushing!
Yes, I agree!
I imagine that one week was quite a challenge when you consider all the amazing Guerlain perfumes created. How do you decide what to focus on?
I do enjoy the ‘Now & Then’ feature.
I wanted to pick some more recent and some older fragrances as well.
Glad that “now & then” does the trick 🙂
I have read a couple the rest are still on my phone waiting.. 🙂
I found someone else who prefers Songe d’un Bois d’ete over the other two- yay! 🙂
You also prefer Sonde d’Un Bois d’Ete over the other two?
Yes. Initially I just got some tiny samples and liked them all but wasn’t sure which I preferred. When I went to Turkey last year though I went through Dubai with $ to get one (one has to choose airlines well 😉 ) and this one stood out. I love the middle-easten feel it has, it’s sweet dryness, and it’s just so unusual.
Glad you found the one to love and actually have in your collection.
I’m with you Perthgir! Songes is my favorite in that beautiful trio too! It is very dry and very woody.
Because of your “week” I thought that I hadn’t worn/tested any Guerleins in a while. So now I’m sitting with Rose Barbare on one wrist and Rose Nacrée du Désert on the other.
Mea culpa! And what do you think about them?
Yes!Dug out my vintage Samsara today…you cannot beat that Sandalwood from the early 90’s!
That vintage must be superb.
Me too! I’m wearing my mums (now mine) 1989 edp. It’s been aaaaaages since I’ve smelled this! Yum!
Happy birthday, Mick! I also turn 23 today. SOTD is L’Artisan Jour de Fete. My parents and I are going to the Bronx zoo (it’s my first time!), so maybe I should be wearing Obsession as “enrichment” for the tigers 😀
Happy Birthday! Ari. Hope to see you again soon! I am planning an outing to Twisted Lily with dearest Daisy in August.
Happy Birthday, Ari. Enjoy your special day.
Happy Birthday to you!
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve lived in NYC for over 20 years and have never visited that zoo!
Meanwhile I leave for Seattle tomorrow and the zoo there is on the list of things to see. Go figure.
Hope it’s a great day for you 😉
Happy birthday Ari! Have fun at the zoo! 🙂
Happy birthday Ari!
Happy birthday Ari, hope it’s a wonderful day!
Happy birthday Ari!
Happy birthday!
A very happy birthday Ari!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Ari! 🙂
Happy Birthday Ari!
Happy birthday sweetie!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ari!!Hope your day is fabulous!
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday Ari!
The last time I went to the zoo I tested the Obsession thing and I have to say it was the first time I saw the cheetah or the lion actually move. The cheetah was pacing like mad. The hubband was just shaking his head and completely horrified that I brought the bottle with me to refresh.
That is so cool! I am especially glad I saved my small sample of Obsession now. I just need to go to the zoo!
It could have been completely coincidental but I was happy anyway.
Nice to coincide with a celebrity :))
Wearing Creed Virgin Island Water for a trip to the dog park this morning and anticipated temps of 90F this afternoon. It’s not coconutty this morning on me, more musk and rum. This one is a shape-shifter depending on temps and I suppose my body chemistry on any particular day. Last month it was all citrus and coconut.
Happy weekend to all!
My brats would not do well at a dog park. One’s a big chicken, one is full of attitude, and my little one is a cranky old lady.
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille. Can’t get enough of this one!
Les Nombres d`Or Vetyver for me today. Once the ginger dies down a bit the tonka and vetiver are just beautiful.
Enjoy the weekend!
It is stunning, I love the stuff! But then I also love most of the line 🙂
This sounds like something I need to sniff, now that vetiver has become my newl favorite note.
Went to the opera tonight, an English rendition of The Magic Flute, but still with 18th century costumes. I have see a few modern operas and modern renditions but I don’t enjoy them as much as the traditional ones with delightful sets and costumes.
A bit cold out tonight so I wore a vintage (1979) Dianne Von Furstenburg leopard print coat over black dress and boots, and scent-wise, Goutal Myrrhe Ardente. I’d planned something more dramatic, but am having a bit of an emotional time of late and find that I need soothing fragrances or they irritate me. I find this calming yet not too boring, the smoked woods keep it interesting.
Is there anything more glamorous than a vintage DVF leopard print coat??
I’m with you, I hate when they mess with the classics! I live where there are no operas but my dvd library is full of great ones and I always feel I need to dress and scent up to even watch those.
perthgirl, you looked amazing!
I’m with you on the operas. Those minimalist versions of Wagner drive me nuts. (Four hours! Give me something to look at!)
I went through a similar phase the past two years when I really had to keep low key fragrances otherwise I became overwhelmed. Anything too complex was very over-stimulating. There were a lot of my very favorite fragrances that I didn’t wear for many months until I felt I was in the clear. My fav “calming” fragrance became Annick Goutal Mandragore Pourpre, which I feel has a very aromatheraputic effect, and also softies like Shalimar and Emeraude in very light doses. Ditto for light applications of No 5. I also enjoy very much the Bottega Veneta and BV eau Legere fragrances b/c they are pretty muted. Good luck and don’t tax your nose!
I’m the opposite. I tend to get bored by classical opera, even though I like classical instrumental music.
However, my parents love opera, and in an effort to relate to their interest, I kept trying to like it. Then I went to see Nixon in China and loved it. I have now realized that I love operas written after 1950 (a date chosen to include Billy Budd).
I am hoping that the Metropolitan Opera Company (of NYC) does not proceed with its announced, but possibly suicidal intention of locking its orchestra out in a contract dispute so I can see Death of Klinghoffer this year.
One of the reasons that the Met supposedly is in a battle with its orchestra is the costs of the very elaborate and often very modern sets that the Met has been using for even classic operas. (In a recent Wagner presentation, members of the chorus were suspended in an elaborate midair set. Traviata was moved to a Las Vegas casino). I tend to agree with you about too much modernizing. Some stories are to closely tied to particular time places and societies. There’s nothing more ridiculous than watching a character go on and on about some virginal young woman whose “honor” was “ruined”, when that woman was last seen doing the twist in a mini dress, and the character singing about the need to avenge her is doing so in the middle of a disco. You wouldn’t do “Oppenheimer” in the 18th century; why do Don Giovani in the 1950’s?
I’m inadvertently wearing Iris Ukiyoe, as I spilled it all over this morning trying to decant a sample into a spray bottle.
Not bad, but it is now mixed with sunscreen in preparation for a sunny afternoon outside.
Happy bday to Mick. The local radio station was running a flashback show this morning featuring the year 1971, the year Mick & Bianca married. And their daughter went on to design a Shalimar bottle!
SOTD L’Artisan Piment Brulant – wonderful sheer spice for a cold, cloudy summer day.
Right now my SOTD is violet–a combination of Lush Violet Nights bath oil and their Daddy-O shampoo. Violet Nights is one of their Lush Kitchen products, which are apparently very limited editions only available through their UK site, but I stumbled across a US seller offering them on eBay and bought two bottles. If you like violet scents (and I do), it is wonderful. I was concerned that it might just sit on top of the water in an oil slick, as the first ingredient is soybean oil, but it disperses nicely in the bath water and smells wonderful.
ooooooooo. nice.
Had a long sweaty walk this morning followed by an intense gym trip so have been unscented so far. No idea what to wear today as I have a massage scheduled at a new place and should probably go unscented. Am considering either Dev IV or Tropic of Capricorn as they are both very comfortable. Just need to decide whether to be dark and incensy or dark and tropical.
I am in desperate need of an intense gym trip.
I love all the Devs, especially Dev 1!
No SOTD yet..
Read this on Slate:
Even the scent of nature may be beneficial: Chemicals secreted by trees, known as phytoncides, have been linked with improved immune defense as well as a reduction in anxiety and increase in pain threshold.
So go sniff a tree.. it’s good for you. 😛
I love that. I’ve been dragging all summer with one respiratory ailment after another and feel ridiculously old and pathetic. I am going to start sniffing trees starting today! Wonder where else phytoncides pop up.
How’s: “Hello there woody, I like your fir!”
I can believe it. I inevitably feel so much better and more relaxed whenever I go for a walk in the woods.
Natural Pine forests close to home,so I stroll regularly through the lush carpets of pine needles and forest mulch! It’s unbottled THE AFTERNOON OF A FAUN…
Jeffrey pines smell like vanilla and butterscotch, and sometimes pineapple. When it is warm, you don’t even need to get close to the tree — scent is everywhere in the forest.
Nature sustains me physically, mentally, and emotionally.
On a sillier note, research has shown that swearing increases pain tolerance. But, everything in moderation — according to Scientific American, “The more we swear, the less emotionally potent the words become, Stephens cautions. And without emotion, all that is left of a swearword is the word itself, unlikely to soothe anyone’s pain.”
Greetings everyone! It started out cold today, but I am still attempting to hold on to our summer which seems to be drawing to a close early…. I am wearing Miller Harris Geranium Bourbon. It manages to be very green and fresh, but still warm. Excellent!
I do have a question for everyone who is interested. I like powders, and I have a few vanilla powdery things that I enjoy. But the other day I was craving a “warm” vanilla, that is still light enough for summer (no can do on the Organza Indecense or Shalimar, Emeraude, et. al., and other heavy orientals with some semblance of vanilla I save for fall/winter). Maybe it was the JCE friday post that kick-started this urge (after wearing Eau Duelle, which I love, I realize is sooo powdery…). But I am open to suggestions: not too foody (no cake please!), not too powdery, but *delightful* vanilla summertime frags. Imagine, if you will, a sheer summer weight cashmere wrap as a vanilla fragrance. Any tips?
Creed’s Sublime Vanille and Hermès Eau de Merveille are both nice summer fragrances.
I’m wearing Eau de Merveille today and on me it dries down to a warm, not sweet vanilla.
I 2nd Sublime Vanille. I was eyeing my sample this morning as I’ve not worn it on a while. Very pricey if you go for a FB, but decants are easy enough to get on this one.
Hermes Vanille Galante is nice too – lily & vanilla combo.
My favorite summer vanillas are Lush Vanillary and Atelier Cologne Grand Neroli.
I’m not sure it is a warm vanilla exactly but Vanilla Insensee is my favorite summertime vanilla.
It does not work for me, but, Lavanila’s Vanilla Grapefruit gets a lot of love from perfumistas.
I like Carthusia Ligea on a warm day, although it might be too powdery for you. Les Nereides Opoponax is similar, with about half the powder (and at about half the price per ml).
Have you tried Atelier’s Vanille Insensee? This is probably the most natural vanilla fragrance I have smelled. Total true vanilla goodness!
I love Pacifica’s Island Vanilla. The body lotion is particularly nice by itself or layered with your other fragrances. The spray bottle initially smells strongly of alcohol but transitions to a lovely smokey, fuzzy vanilla. I think Shalimar Parfum Initial is fabulous for the summer, another relatively cheap thrill since it is discontinued and at all the fragrance discounters now.
I love Pacifica’s Island Vanilla. I finished a FB of it, and that never happens!
Everyone: Thank you so much for all the recs. I’ve never smelled *any* of the ones you all recommended (most of my past vanilla experience is in the heavier orientals). Thank you bunches. Now I have some fun homework. They all sound very interesting. Cheers!!
Carnal Flower today. MMMMMM. I have a decant in a rollerball and I keep wishing I had it in an atomizer instead… but I’m too lazy to switch it over.
I’ve been waiting to see you back on the boards for a couple of days. How did your doggie meet and greet go?
We only had three items of criteria for a possible doggy adoption: young (not a puppy, up to age 3), medium size (25-50 pounds or so), and house trained. Breed and gender unimportant.
The dog we went to see yesterday was not housebroken, contrary to what the rescue center claimed, and she’s been living outside for the past eight months.
I know there are people who can deal with this issue while training a dog, but I am NOT one of them. The dog had some other behavior issues that I feel like we could train her out of (jumping up, not following basic commands like “sit” and “come,” and pulling on a leash), but I am just not willing to handle doggy pee on the carpets while we work through the training. We’ll keep looking.
Oh, that’s too bad. Good for you for knowing your strengths and limitations though. It always baffles me when people confuse crystal clarity with flexibility. I’m really glad you are going to keep looking. Somewhere out there is a very lucky little pup waiting for you.
btw, I was a day late responding to your post early in the week so I don’t know if you saw it. Navy and Icognito are the 90s drugstore scents I remember.
Thanks for the ideas – I wound up going with Cherish because I liked the packaging for it (“young man buying it for his single mother” was the scenario). I was so busy with babies and so broke – those go together sometimes! – in the mid-90s through about 2008 that there’s a good 10-12 years of popular culture I missed out on. Music, TV shows, fashion… perfume… 🙂
It’s 101 degrees and it’s supposed to reach 103. But, it’s a dry heat 🙂 I was in the mood for mango, so my SOTD is Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit (notes: mango, pineapple, apricot, and grapefruit). What does it smell like? It smells like mango, pineapple, apricot, and grapefruit. It smells natural and it makes me happy.
Speaking of mango, I’ve sampled Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, and I get very little green mango and the incense and lotus are absent. On my skin, it smells like chopped vegetables with a little light woods. It’s one of those fragrances that just sits on my skin (it does develop and it does fade) and never blends or melds with me, if that makes any sense.
That does sound delicious in the heat, kindcrow!Enjoy!Looking forward to Summer here in the south,so I can break out the fun summer scents!
The Mango Grapefruit fragrance sounds sensational! I will have to give it a try.
I hope you like it!
I am a huge JC Ellena fan, and own a couple of the Jardin series but Sur le Nil just did nothing for me. No mango, definitely no incense. Just kinda… light, and soapy. I must be anosmic to some key ingredients.
I got just about nothing too, but not that uncommon for me with most of Hermes.
Happy Birthday to Mick! My favorite Rolling Stones song is probably “Beast of Burden,” but they have so many good ones …
Yes! Great song. So many good ones, just when I’ve settled on one to love best, then I remember another, and the cycle begins all over again.
So true!
I have a “Stones” folder on my MP3 player. 🙂 “Beast of Burden” is on it, along with eight or so others.
Didn’t I read that Mick was a huge Diorissimo fan, back in the day? (And that Keith Richards wears Joy in his armpits during shows?)
omg, hope it’s the reformulated version!
Their two-CD “Forty Licks” compilation has been in heavy rotation in my car lately.
I think “Joy in His Armpits” is the working title of their forthcoming album…
Ha! 🙂
WOOO I’d buy that. 😉
Love Bette Midler’s femminist version.
My mom loves that one!
Wearing Huitieme Art Parfums, Ciel d`Airain from a sample acquired with the GoddessRena last week.
This is one of my favorites from the many samples collected. It takes a thicker application than my usual couple sprays/dabs, but it’s a cheerful milky green fig that sticks real close to the skin and doesn’t lose its lightness on me.
I could see myself going through a 1.7oz bottle in a few months, which would be its own kind of satisfying. Maybe for my birthday, although it will have some competition.
Enjoying John Varvatos Artisan today. I have trouble with Orange Blossom being way too sweet or having no longevity. This is a very wearable, gentle fragrance that stays! I love Yves Rocher Neroli, but it lasts 5 minutes on me. Has anyone tried the lotion and the perfume and had better luck?
Artisan has been on my “to-sniff” list for a while. I’ll remedy that the next time I’m at Sephora. I have trouble with orange blossom turning to soap on me.
My brother LOVES Artisan. Can’t tell you much more than that, though.
Yves Rocher bath products are great, so definitely give their Neroli shower gel a spin. The lotions are worth a try too. Think they’re having a crazy sale on at the moment…
This is really random. I’m lying in a park with my kids daydreaming about the smell of late summer evenings when I was a kid: clover, cut grass, roses from the garden and a whiff of sheep dung and lanolin from the paddock. Can anyone recommend a fragrance?
Atelier Cologne Trefle Pur is a clover cologne, but I’m pretty sure it has no dung… 🙂
Trefle Pur does not have any sheep dung, but it does layer well with rose perfumes.
The Trefle Pur soap is great too. Still no suggestions for the dung, I see…
You could layer Trefle Pur with a rose perfume that has a “barnyard” or “fecal” note. According to a blog post that I found at http://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2012/02/20/the-candy-perfume-boys-guide-to-oud/, some oud frags may suit you? See the “Barnyard Oud” heading.
So, you could try layering Al Oudh by L’Artisan Parfumeur with Trefle Pur? I have no experience with either perfume.
Chanel Cuir de Russie smells like barnyard to me.
Mick likes that one.
Thank you all. I have my mission.
Good weekend, everyone!
Can anyone tell me about the difference between the EDT and EDP of Donna Karan Cashmere Mist? I have a sample of one of them that I quite like, but I don’t know which one it is…
Thanks!
Happy Weekend!
I’ve been dabbing on Arpege of all things. I don’t know why it intrigues me so. It seems to have a bit of a split personality, something classic and ‘knowing’ but still accessible.
SOTD is Balmain Ivoire (current formulation). A sleeper, just like Bottega Veneta was for me when I first tried it a couple of years ago. Immediately liked it, but didn’t blow me away, but it has revealed itself to be just interesting enough that I love catching whiffs of it throughout the day, but doesn’t distract or overwhelm me like some that I’ve initially liked more (like the Tauers, or other “interesting” heavy hitters.) I am going through my decant very quickly!
Also thinking about going to the doggy adoption place today to get a new companion for us, and our other greyhound. We lost our old boy in October and have been thinking about getting another for a while. Today might be the day!
Oh, good luck with the adoption!
I haven’t smelled the new version of Ivoire. The old one I had a bottle of and kept waffling as to whether I liked it, or didn’t. It kept zooming from creamy-lathery nice soap to tangy moss, and I kept feeling schizophrenic while wearing it. But I imagine that the new has very little moss. Hmm… that’s one to add to the test list.
Try it! I am not a big fan of “soapy” fragrances, but this strikes the right balance of being “clean” without smelling boring at all. I find it to be a bit of a shapeshifter, where one moment I’m smelling one thing, and then a hint of something just ever so slightly bitter will peek through. Really a marvel of construction, I think.
And, we have a puppy! We meant to bring home a housebroken, leash trained greyhound, but they handed us a puppy, she licked us and wagged her little puppy tail, and we were done for. No name yet. Her papers said “Puppy 2D” so we call her that, or “Girl Puppy 2D”. Yeah, we need to come up with something a little better… My four year old suggested “Flying Milk” for no reason that we can discern! We told her that could be her middle name.
I am thinking of either Theorema or Chanel no 22 today. Since it is in the 80’s today, I am leaning to no 22.
Follow up on the Tug McGraw fragrance review.
Mr. McGraw slapped a concertgoer during a recent concert. He claims that she reached up and groped him. . Footage of the incident is on line (but darned if I can figure it out).
I expect 0 impact on fragrance sales, but probably a small settlement with non-disclosure agreement.
I CAN’T WAIT TO PURCHASE BVLGARI FOR MAN IN BLACK FRAGRANCE…I LOVE MAN EXTREME!
SOTD is Bubblegum Chic (Heeley) dabbed from a vial. Hate the name; hate the marketing; like the perfume. The opening bubblegum note transitions into a slightly fruity (strawberry) gardenia. Gardenia is not listed as a note. I love the smell of “live” white flowers, but the perfumes rarely work for me.
It’s only the second time that I’ve worn it, and I’m going to be good and drain the sample vial before I consider purchasing a decant 🙂 This stuff is potent, so the sample will provide numerous opportunities for testing!
Oh, and I’m inside with the air conditioning on. I wonder how this would do in the triple-digit heat we are due for today?
Ooh, I like Bubblegum Chic, too! I have (or had) a vial and will have to dig it out again to retry. I do remember its potency, though.
A sad first for me today. Put on Heure Exquise that I have a generous decant of from a perfume friend only to find it has gone off. I’d always wondered if I would actually know if a perfume had gone off and here is irrefutable proof, there is no mistaking it and it hasn’t gotten better after the start. Boo hoo. I really liked that one.
Noooooo 🙁 Lame.
Have you tried spraying a bit into the sink? Apparently the juice caught in the tube/nozzle can sometimes go off while the rest is fine so perhaps try spraying some out?
That has happened to me several times, where I had to clear out whatever was in the spray tube before it got wearable again.
Of course, sometimes it really has gone bad.
I hope someone can offer some suggestions, with what I am about to ask. I have had a time trying to find a really good Tom Ford sales associate. The wonderful person that I used to work with, has left. I don’t live close to any stores, so I am dependent on phone communications. I also need an Hermes fragrance salesperson. Tom Ford has come out with a couple of new scents, that compliments the Portifino Neroli line. And Hermes is also launching a new bodycare line. Thank you.
