Monday scent of the day 7/14

Posted by Robin on 14 July 2014 104 Comments

Garden State Parkway postcard

Happy Monday! Do share your scent of the day.

I'm off on vacation and will spend most of the day on the nation's highways. I will be gone for two weeks, and so posting here will be somewhat lighter than usual.

I'm wearing a touch of Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme, but I cut it with my regular, unscented body lotion since it's so strong. I am not bringing much perfume with me, so I'll be wearing the Bronze Goddess more often than not.

Reminder: this Friday, the 18th, will be Sample Grab Bag: pick a fragrance at random from among your untried samples. The following Friday wear something by Hermès OR something by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Cartier Baiser Vole EDP. I have a very sick cat, so a rushed workday and then an early vet appointment, and somehow getting a little extra dressed up and putting on a prim perfume seemed like it would help.

Am wearing Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil today, and it is very refreshing on a hot, muggy day.

I just bought the Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme, and am loving it! I agree with you, Robin, that it is strong, and I like your idea of cutting it with regular unscented body lotion. Makes it last longer, too 🙂

Jo Malone’s Nutmeg & Ginger. Body creme, followed with the cologne. Even with the layering, it all fades to a woodsy, slightly powdery whisper – certainly more nutmeg/”sandalwood” than ginger – in less than an hour but it’s well worth the effort. Smells wonderful.

I’ve been on a leather kick since Saturday, when I was choosing my perfume and wasn’t in the mood for fresh or bright and suddenly nothing but leather would do! I have been wearing Chanel Cuir de Russie all weekend; it is again my SOTD. I also ordered a bottle of Cuir de Lancome on ebay this weekend. It has been warm and muggy, but not hot, and the not so sweet leathers have been working really well.

        Hello scent twin!
The body lotions really can pack a punch, but I simply do not have the patience for applying.
I see some sets on eBay, gel & lotion together, so I may do that after all and give them both a try.

The shower gels are so lovely at the end of a day.

Lucy–if you have a Crabtree & Evelyn outlet anywhere near you, it might be worth the trip. I was at one in Orlando two weeks ago and they had a large number of their scents, normally $30, for $10! Also had matching hand creams and lotions, similarly marked down. I, unfortunately, got my nose all confused and purchased the one scent that I did not like on me. The good news: I googled it and found comparisons to Old Spice and, with that, I handed it over to my husband, who wears it happily! (It was Nantucket Briar, I think.)

It probably was Nantucket Briar, my (formerly) favorite C&E scent. I was just going to order another body lotion or two during their current friends and family sale, read the reviews online and was aghast that this, too, has recently been the subject of reformulation and now ‘stinks’ – numerous individuals compared it to Old Spice. C&E responded to the many posters who complained and finally admitted that the scent had been reformulated to give it a ‘modern twist.’ Ugh! Guess I’ll just have to eke out what I have left and say bye-bye to that one, too. Dang it!

SOTD Laura Biagiotti Roma. Wanted fresh AND cool and this fits the bill for both.

Has anyone tried the reformulated version of Venezia? I haven’t tried either but wondering if it’s been butchered to ‘don’t bother’ status, or just isn’t good anyway?

Collecting vintage post cards was one of my hobbies in the 1970s and 1980s, and I still enjoy them. I’m especially fond of 1950s postcards like the one you selected, with those optimistic colors that don’t always seem merited by the scene. I used to look through boxes of them at flea markets and similar shops and pick the ones that conveyed a mysterious feeling. One of my favorites is a loop in a highway in the Appalachian Mountains that someone selected (why?) and sent to her grown-up son.

No perfume yet, since I have to go out in the sun soon. Joop! Rococco is on my mind for later, as a result of thinking yesterday about perfumes I met in duty free shops.

According to Fragrantica, it was composed by Benoist Lapouza and launched in 2000. With middle notes said to include magnolia, ginger, jasmine, heliotrope, ylang-ylang and rose, it seems like a cooler and more abstract descendent of Lagerfeld Chloe. However, it could also be the peachy color that links it to Chloe in my mind. 🙂

I’m wearing vintage Intimate from Revlon. The half-used bottle I found at an estate sale and it looks like it may have been carried in a purse for a while as it’s pretty beat up, but the juice is still amazing.

Continues to break my heart that we used to be able to buy beauties like this in the drugstores for $4-5 dollars waaaaay back in the day.

SOTD is Parfums de Nicolai Le Temps d’Un Fete. Its a new sample, the first PdN for me (I will be testing 5 or 6 from the line in the next week or so). It smells great, although may fade too quickly for me. Also I already have quite a few green florals (No. 19, Chamade, Vent Vert, Silences) so maybe I can live without a FB of this one. My problem is I am not very picky and most perfumes smell wonderful to me, so its hard to resist a FB of almost anything I sample (so long as its not outrageously expensive) and my collection is getting ridiculous!

We’ve had a really warm sunny day with thunderstorms now in the evening. I’m wearing Neela Vermeire Mohur EDP and it’s been a perfect choice, it really blooms in the heat, just beautiful!

SOTD is CK One Summer. It is perfect for this hot, humid day.

Enjoy your vacation! Wearing Philosphy Falling in Love today. Fruity and simple – sweet blackberries and that is about it. It’s warm, overcast, and a bit muggy today. I also laugh when people here in SD say it’s humid, being from the DC area which is a swamp. But it is actually a bit humid today, as my hair is frizzing all over the place.

It is darned humid in PA lately, but I always remind myself that no place is as humid as DC 🙂

I started with Lann-Ael which I have decided it just ok. Maybe it is the heat but I’m not feeling it. I will be changing it up this evening.

Today I am wearing Scent Of Hope from DSH perfumes. It’s perfect for these 100 degree temps. Beautiful Iris blended with Peach and soft woods. Very Creamy.

SOTD A*Men Sunessence Orage d’Ete. My first scent from the Angel franchise – I got some carded samples on eBay a few months ago and when those are gone I may need to find an FB.
Love it especially right now because it’s blending so well with the scent of Chinese trumpet lilies from my garden.

Yesterday I put on K de Krizia from the bottle I got at Big Lots. I kept smelling the steam from the neighbors’ dryer…well, no. It was the pathetic dry down from the current formulation. Thinking of abandoning the bottle in a random ladies’ room or donating to a local charity shop…

That is a shame! K de Krizia was a favorite of mine in the mid – eighties. Really bold and rich. Puts me back in the bar at Nicky Blair’s, sipping a Champagne cocktail.
Today K is at the Lots, Blair’s is long gone and I’m sipping ice water. Oh, the humanity!

There is an interesting article on the Washington Post website by Joel Aschenbach about research indicating that friends tend to be unexpectedly genetically similar:

“Friends often look alike. The tendency of people to forge friendships with people of a similar appearance has been noted since the time of Plato. But now there is research suggesting that, to a striking degree, we tend to pick friends who are genetically similar to us in ways that go beyond superficial features.

“For example, you and your friends are likely to share certain genes associated with the sense of smell.

“Our friends are as similar to us genetically as you’d expect fourth cousins to be, according to the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This means that the number of genetic markers shared by two friends is akin to what would be expected if they had the same great-great-great-grandparents.”

Could that mean that scent twins are long-lost fourth cousins, perhaps?

Happy vacation, Robin! I’ll be in Boston for a few days this week! I hope the weather gets cooler because i don’t like walking around in the heat.

SOTD = Hermes L’Ambre des Merveilles

This one is one of the most perfect perfumes around. I have a cute 50 mL bottle. One of my Hermes Merveilles flankers, i think the eau Claire, is 100 mLs and is way too big for my hand to comfortably spray so it is sitting forlornly in its box.

My vacation is in Mass too…first at a lake upstate and then at the Cape. So far does not look like stellar weather this week but will keep my fingers crossed.

      Enjoy your trip to Boston!

Two SOTDs today: Trefle Pur in the morning, then when that wore off, Hermes Eau de Gentiane Blanche.

Today I packed up all my full bottles and larger decants in preparation for a cross-country move. That leaves me with only the little samplers for about 3 weeks, but I think I’ll make it. 🙂

Hope your vacation is awesome, Robin! I’m traveling for work right now and trying to pretend I’m on vacation — I had a mimosa with breakfast. 🙂 SOTD was Voile de Violette.

Ha, and I’m on real vacation and nobody served me a mimosa! Not fair 😉

Early SOTD was PdN Wit. Was trying it for the second time. I like it and received lots of complements. It has a very warm, vanilla-type base on me. Love, love the opening.

SOTD evening is Ann Gerard Rose Cut. It smells very similar to SSS Nostalgie on me, particularly in the beginning. Anyone else notice this? Beautiful though.

    Happy vacation, Robin!
