Perfume in the magazines, January 2014: Allure

Posted by Robin on 6 January 2014 8 Comments

Allure, January 2014 Penelope Cruz cover

(Scanty) perfume coverage in the January issue of Allure. Please comment on any fragrance-related coverage you've seen in other fashion and beauty magazines!

Allure

Cover: Penelope Cruz

Scent strips: Not a single one.

Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter section includes Fresh Life Body Oil in the Editor’s Favorites (p. 24), a “Smell This” feature in which three experts talk about Roses de Chloé (p. 26). That's it!

The January issue of Allure is more like a pamphlet than a magazine and there was no letter from editor Linda Wells. Hope she’s not gone, because I believe she’s the perfumeista that keeps up the editorial perfume coverage.

True. It was like they were all tuckered out after the December issue.

I gave up on reading magazines a long time ago. About three quarters of the thing is all ads and if there is anything to read, there usually what is in style and how much it will run you. I’m not one of those people whose gonna spend $300 on a silver plated pair of earrings because they were designed by Chanel. But yet I will spend that $300 on an Amouage. Why? Because with Amouage, I smell quality and that bottle is going to last me for years. Clothes and jewelry have the tendancy to fall apart after a year these days.

Allure is mostly about beauty, but they do include some clothing too. But it’s the only magazine with any sort of regular fragrance coverage anymore, the rest are hit or miss.

Yes, I especially enjoyed their December article on rose in perfume.

Perfume coverage in magazines has gone downhill since I started paying attention (in the 70’s). The few articles that come out now are mostly just about the new mainstream releases, which of course are mostly flankers.

I think it’s probably harder for them to keep up with what’s interesting out there…there’s just too much product. Plus, of course, they’ve got to keep the advertisers happy.
