Guerlain Les Deserts D’Orient ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 12 July 2012 41 Comments

Guerlain Les Déserts D'Orient

Guerlain has launched Les Déserts D'Orient, a trio of perfumes inspired by raw materials of the Middle East. All three fragrances were developed by Guerlain house perfumer Thierry Wasser.

Rose Nacrée du Désert  ~ a woody floral with rose, oud wood and saffron.

Songe d’un Bois d’Eté ~ a spicy woods with cedar, patchouli, myrrh, floral and leather notes.

Encens Mythique d’Orient ~  an oriental musk, with rose, aldehydes, frankincense, orange blossom, saffron, ambergris and musk.

The Guerlain Les Déserts D'Orient fragrances are available in 75 ml Eau de Parfum; they are sold in the Middle East and in Guerlain's flagship boutique in Paris.

I am not one to drool over a bottle, generally speaking, but these are REALLY beautiful! I can only hope there’s a scent there that I fall for so I can continue to claim to not fall for such things!

Marjorie, I like to comment that I like the bottle but I would never buy a frag only because of the bottle. The juice is what matters. On the other hand I wonder If I would buy a wonderful perfume in an ugly bottle? The other option is less of a case, you can always transfer the juice to different bottle.

I wouldn’t look at these twice if they contained Idylle.

No, I’ve never let a bottle convince me to buy a fragrance. But, honestly, I’ve never found myself all that inspired to! This one is the closest to winning me over, though!

Well, I started out more interested in bottles than the juice. I just love gorgeous glass. I bead, generally using extraordinary very small glass beads, I love fine crystal, and even old lead windows.

After years of coveting Kilian’s laquer box and black glass bottle, I finally got one and don’t regret it in the least. No, I would not pay a fortune for some vaguely strawberrish, vaguely floral scent. And most of the “dramatic” bottles at the department stores actually kind of look cheap up close. (Yeah, EA, I’m talking about your celeb scents).
But really, if looking at a bottle gives you pleasure, that is no less valid than smelling something pleasurable.

You make a good point, Dilana. There’s really no reason to place one aesthetic over another. For me, though, the scent has been the priority, but I do appreciate beautiful objects too!

Guerlain’s been photographing these bottles lately in front of a black background (the bottles in the picture look like they’ve been cut out from that background) so they aren’t exactly that voluptuous in terms of the colors. But agree they *are* fabu.

I haven’t seen these in person, pretty sure the juice is colored lightly like most Guerlain exclusies. Bottles are clear, gold embellishment is on front and back, text is frosted on both sides (one is in French on is in Arabic script).

            The juice is very pale.

Makes perfect sense to me, Marjorie Rose! The one I really want to like is AG Nuit Etoilee, for the blue bottle. I’m pretty sure I’d love one of these scents – they sound made for me!

I got decants of all three-the Rose is the clear winner for me. A gorgeous, dusty rose, spicey, without an overly rich Guerlinade base. The leather is a scent to admire-but very strong and veers extremely masculine. The encens is not-just a vaguely spicy gourmand. I now want a full bottle of the Rose!

The rose variant is the only one that claims to have oud in it, but because oud is so trendy at the moment I wouldn’t be surprised if it is in all three of the fragrances! Do you know how these scent compare to the ouds currently on the market?

The first time I tried it, Rose Nacree reminded me a bit of Rose Oud by Kilian. A couple of days ago I tried it again and it reminded me of Portrait of a Lady, but smoother. Not as loud, but ver spicy.
Rose Nacree is beautiful. When I first smelled them, I was more attracted to Encens Mythique, but Rose Nacree is becoming my favorite. Songe d’un Boise d’Ete is very nice, but a bit masculine for my taste. I wear a lot of perfumes marketed for men, but I think this one smells better on my husband. It reminds me a bit of the spiciness of Serge Noire with leather.

Ooh. Comparisons to Serge Noire might put me over the edge to find a sample stat! Anyone know if these are available in the States? (Seems like so many Guerlains can be hard to find here.)

I never buy decants – I’m a tiny sample or else full bottle type – but decants of these are on route to me as of Tuesday. Can’t wait. Been excited abt these since February. Interestingly the trio was described as an exploration of Persian rose prior to their release.

Here in Riyadh, I got the chance to smell all three and I must say Encens Mythique d’Orient is what I’d choose from the 3 but not something I’d really buy. The rose one is as expected, a rose perfume which I am not really into. The wood one is too sweet for my taste. In general, I am a bit disappointed on all three, or lately, I found myself disappointed on anything Guerlain. Like anything they release is vanilla, vanilla, vanilla. And about the Guerlinade base? Crap! (Sorry, I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed). 🙁

I concur, I feel the Rose is best. I had higher hopes for the others. Very nice, both, but the Rose was the stand out for me. I think those are the most beautiful bottles I have seen. They show respect for the house, the perfumer, the story, the ingredients and the customer. Not slap-dash or silly. Just elegant. My other favorite is the Parure parfum bottle. Guerlain, also.

i think this is an excuse to go to harrods to try them, songe d’un bois d’ete is the one that i feel attracted the most. i usually dismiss rose in a perfume straight away being one of my most hated notes (personal reasons to do with childhood but not family related, i feel compelled to add) but after trying AND LIKING dior’s oud ispahan, nothing’s impossible (as long as the rose note is not predominant), so there’s is an outside chance that i might like encens as well. i do think that the bottles are gorgeous and lucasai makes a good point, would i buy a gorgeous perfume in an ugly, vulgar, cheap looking bottle (think ted lapidus cca 70’s something)?

I saw and sampled these in Paris recently and was impressed. Beautiful bottles and the scents are unmistakably Guerlain but with a twist. My out and out favourite was Songes d’un Bois d’Ete (I sprayed it on my knee as well as my arm to get as much skin exposure as possible!). If I had had 400 euros to splash without guilt I would have bought that and Mon Precieux Nectar in a heartbeat.

I’ve samples of all three and they are gorgeous! Songe is a bit too masculine for me to buy a FB (wouldn’t mind a decant though) but the other two are FB-worthy to me. The rose have similarities with Amouage Epic or Portrait of a Lady or Mohur but softer and a bit sweeter. You’ll be disapointed if you expect much insence from Mythique d’Orient, it’s more about musk but very lovely I think.

They look and seem gorgeus . Although i’m sure the reason For them to be so expensive is that they are geared towards loaded arabics willing to pay the most ridicolous prices
