Tauer Perfumes Advent 2011

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2011 375 Comments — Comments are closed

Andy Tauer of Tauer Perfumes is holding 24 days of giveaways for Advent again this year. To paraphrase his explanation from last year:

It is this time of the year again: Advent, with its warmth and scents bringing back memories from our childhood. It is the time of the year where we prepare for the holidays, a time to look back to 2011, and to look forward into 2012.

“Tauer” brings you an ADVENT CALENDAR December 1 -24 with lots of gifts and fragrant treasures.

Now Smell This is pleased to host the prize draw for December 1st. Today's winner gets a full bottle of the Tauer perfume of their choice: any fragrance sold on the Tauer website, or a bottle of Tableau de Parfums Miriam, or a bottle of Cologne du Maghreb. And there will be other prizes every single day for the rest of Advent; just check the Advent calendar page every day to find out how and where to enter.

For a chance to win the December 1st prize, leave a quick comment below telling us your favorite holiday (this holiday, or any other holiday) smell. The very simple rules:

  1. Be sure to use the “Post a comment” box; do not reply to another comment! All replies to comments will be deleted.
  2. Anybody, anywhere, can enter, so long as I have permission to use the email address in your reader account to contact you. If the email address in your reader account is incorrect, you might want to fix it.
  3. If you are the winner and you fail to send me your mailing details within a couple weeks, we'll have to pick another winner.

We'll be accepting comments through tomorrow morning (2 December, around 8-am-ish), at which point a winner will be chosen at random.

Have been waiting for Andy to do the advent calendar again as I had so much fun with this last year. My favourite holiday related smell has to be the pine, this instantly puts me into Christmas mood.

I love Andy’s Advent Calendar – it’s so festive. Thank you for doing it again this year.

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, but my favorite holiday smells are from Halloween. I love the smell of leaf piles on the side of the road and kicking through them on Halloween night when my kids trick-or-treat. I also love the smell of candles burning in jack-o-lanterns.

    Oh, how fun!

I love the smell of clove oranges – we used to make them with my mom, add red plaid ribbon, and hang them from the wooden beams in the kitchen at home. That, the icy air blowing off the lake and up the hill to our house, combined with woodsmoke from the stove = the holidays to me.

Please do use my email address! 🙂

My favorite holiday smell is the smell of the kitchen as Thanksgiving dinner is almost ready–turkey along with the onions sauteed in butter until golden brown that my Dad uses for his stuffing

  27. pam says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:42 am

    Thank you, Andy!
My favorite holiday smell is Christmas trees. That means pine, cedar, fir, any of it. And the ironic thing is that a few years ago I developed an allergy to Christmas trees! When the live tree is in the house more than 24 hrs or so, I get bad respiratory problems. But I can still enjoy them in other people’s homes (short duration) and outside.

  28. NicoleH says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:42 am

So, it’s the first day of Andy’s Advent calender again! Thanks for hosting, guys!
Well to me it’s still Xmas and New Year time. And it’s always feeled with oranges, amber, wood and spices. Last year it was a scent of Elixir des Merveilles. I am curious if it’s still remains the best one for this period to me.

  31. CM says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:45 am

I misread the instructions … my favorite holiday is Christmas – and my favorite holiday smell is Christmas cookies baking in the oven. Thanks for the draw! (delete my prior comment as it did not meet the rules).

  32. PremierT says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:45 am

My favourite holiday smell was definitely from New Years Eve when my parents, their friends and adult relatives would be wearing their best scents mingling in the living room with the scent of firewood, spirits, wiffs of cigarette smoke and baked deserts of some kind. Such glamour and endless possibilities for fun -until of course I was sent to bed at 12.01.

  33. gvillecreative says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:46 am

Does my anniversary count as a holiday? I got married last year, and I’m shocked by how great married life is (and that someone so nice loves me so much).

If my anniversary doesn’t count, than Xmas is my favorite holiday. Now that my siblings and I are grown, it’s the only time when we are all together.

I love Andy’s advent. SUCH A GREAT IDEA, ANDY! 🙂

  34. Absolute Scentualist says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:47 am

Thank you for the contest, Andy and Robin! 🙂 And yes, you can use the email in my account.

My favorite holiday is Halloween, which happens during my favorite season and is full of the scent of freshly carved pumpkin, wet or burning leaves on the crisp autumn air and the sweet blend of candies at the end of the evening. But my earliest holiday fragrance memory would be my family’s Christmas tree when I was very young. The crisp yet warm smell of the pine tree, a hint of plastic and dust from the decorations, the smell of the paper wrapping and on Christmas morning, my mother’s elaborate Christmas bread filled with pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon and butter and topped with glaze and cherries… Thinking of these always makes me nostalgic.

  35. shellyw says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:48 am

My favorite holiday smell is definitely a blue spruce Christmas tree. Ginger cookies baking is a close second. I think the contest is lovely!

I’ll use the European definition of “holiday” to encompass vacations. Thus, my favourite holiday smell is that wonderful cacophony of scents at the seaside: the smell of Coppertone (for the sun) and Ungentine (for after the sun!) mixed with saltwater, hot sand, rotting seaweed, hot dogs and their condiments, and so much more. If I close my eyes, I can almost smell it now…

  38. relleric says:
    1 December 2011 at 8:52 am

    Let the Holidays begin!
I love the smell of carnations in any floral arrangement (any/all holidays) with their creamy peppery scent.
    Thank you!

  39. Duke of Pall Mall says:

    Oh wow, this is great.
My favorite holiday smell hands down is the perfume of Christmas – a festive-wintery melange of clove-speckled oranges, butter cookies, cinnamon spice, incense and spruce. Sprinkled with fond childjhood memories, of course….

Love the period between Christmas and New Years…great time to wind down and also gear up for another year. Wood smoke and pine is one of the best smells ever… wouldn’t be Christmas with it! And a little L’Air du Desert Marocain spritzed in for good measure never hurts!

  49. Blimunda says:
    1 December 2011 at 9:04 am

Thank you Andy! Xmas is here!

My favourite holiday smell……I can’t narrow it down to just one! The smell of sun tan lotion on a hot beach, mixed with briney salt from the sea.
And Le Labo’s Patchouli, because it smelled incredible in the cold, dry atmosphere of a Montreal winter. The quality of the atmosphere really brought out the beauty of the scent and it’s never been the same anywhere else for me.

    Thanks so much!! 🙂

  53. Bee says:
    1 December 2011 at 9:10 am

Advent weeks are baking-intensive times, with cinnamon, cloves and star anise clouds wafting through all rooms. I like wearing (the discontinued?) Diptyque Opôné for my baking sprees (and only then), but a couple of Andy Tauer scents could fit well too :-). BTW my favourite holidays are however summer breaks..

  54. thatsummerbabe says:
    1 December 2011 at 9:11 am

Although I love the smells of Christmas, my favorite smells are actually just around Halloween: the scent of burning fires in the autumn air as the leaves are falling and the air is turning crisp; the smells of just-pressed apple cider and fresh, clean hay, and the delicious chai tea I start drinking. It feels like such a special time of year, when you really feel on the cusp between seasons.

  55. Salvatore says:
    1 December 2011 at 9:11 am

My Christmas Holidays make me always think of my grandmother’s house, where after coming back to Church, we used to have a dinner nearby the fireplace …..So the holiday smell is very linked to Incense and burning woods !!!!!!!!!!
    Thank U

while the xmas holidays are somewhat stressful for many, the scent smorgasbord is beyond compare: resinous fir trees, baking spices, all carried on the cold clear air of winter. it will always evoke such incredibly strong images.

  60. konglishbeauty says:

My favorite holiday smell… pine needle from a real Christmas tree. I know it’s going to be a nightmare to dispose of and I’ll be cleaning up the dropped needles for weeks but that fresh green pine tree tang gives me an instant lift.

  61. dinazad says:
    1 December 2011 at 9:15 am

Yay! I’m so excited for this advent contest.

There are so many good smells around the winter holidays, it’s hard to choose a favorite! One smell that makes my holidays feel complete and personal, though, is cardamom.

My mother’s family is Danish and they have lots of recipes for pastries around Christmas, all of which use a dash of fresh-ground cardamom. Something about that smell transports me to whole day baking sessions with my mother and sisters, the laughs, the coffee, the good-natured arguments over whether the dough needs more flour.

Andy’s Avent Calendar is such a wonderful treat each year!!

My favorite holiday smell is of the gingerbread houses our family and extended family and friends make every year. Each year, the day after Thanksgiving or so, we each make and decorate a ginigerbread house and then place them on top of the piano. It is wonderful to walk past that room and get the smell of the sugar candy and the gingerbread..it’s magical.

    Andy’s Advent is always amazing!

Interesting question about holiday smells. If you just asked about a favorite holiday, that would probably be Easter, but it isn’t associated in my head with any smells. Perhaps a favorite holiday smell is the fizzy smell of a glass of good champagne.

In the past, I took a week off in November. In the afternoon I took my dog for a walk. After, I normally bought roasted chestnuts. At home I peeled and buttered them and added a touch of nutmeg…
I still connect the smell of this with November, or vice versa 🙂

So, I know this isn’t quite the answer being looked for, but when I smell Philosykos I feel my whole body relax. I used it when I was away for just a few days once – but it was a good few days so the association has lasted. Then another is the smell of the garden, late evening Friday. I was at a Jewish day school and I imagined the air felt different at this hour!
And last would be the smell of brandied puddings and cake which spell merriment to me when Christmas is approaching.

My favorite holiday is “Sinterklaas”. It is the Dutch celebration of Saint Nickolas on the fifth of december. We come together and give eachother presents with very strange packaging. The packaging refers to the present itself or to some information about the receiver. As we speak (as I type this) my foster son is making a 1.80 m long Heineken beer bottle from cardboard. I make a rescue boat for my niece. All presents come with a home made poem. The celebration of Sinterklaas is not complete without “pepernoten” and “speculaas” both baked with many spices mainly cinemon. Cinemon is the smell that belongs to this time of year.

My family lived many places and we hardly observed any holidays that i can remember, so, as an adult, Christmas has to be my favorite – for the meaning (peace, love and forgiveness), for the lights, the food and the atmosphere, at it’s best, of magic and hope.
And! for Andy’s Advent calendar! Please enter me! Thank you. Rachel H

Oh, could you enclose in a fragrance all this notes?

Thanks for hosting! My favorite holiday smell is the indescribable scent that always arose from the enormous packages we received at Christmastime from our relatives in Korea. The packages arrived cocooned in layers of craft paper and bound with a sort of nylon raffia. Unwrapping released a characteristic odor at once familiar and foreign, a melange of roasted seaweed, chestnut jelly, and fragrant woods. Now I’m all nostalgic, sigh.

My favorite holiday scents are church incense or the scent of a pine Christmas tree

Growing up in India, there were no special smells associated with Christmas and so my favourite festive smell is gunpowder – drying out firecrackers on the terrace before Diwali and the smell of the smoke!

My favorite holiday smell is of my parents carpet in their house. We would sit on the carpet and open our gifts Christmas morning. We could also smell bacon and pancakes coming in from the kitchen, since we ate a big breakfast after opening gifts. They have since taken out the carpet for tile, but I will always have fond scent memories of it.

OOOOHHHHH! The Holidays are Here!! thanks Andy and Robin for starting December off right. Hard to pick just one holiday smell–I like the pine and fire smells of Christmas, but Mother’s Day and lily of the valley take top honors with me because those little lilies make me think about my wonderful Mom. I miss her everyday….

In Canada we celebrate Victoria Day on May 24th (although in practice it is usually “the first Monday before May 25th” so as to give everyone a three-day weekend). Coincidentally, this is when the lilacs bloom (although it’s sometimes as late as the first week of June): lilacs grow in enormous profusion in this part of the world, and so when Victoria Day arrives, the glorious smell of lilacs arrives with it, or is not far behind.

It’s a traditional christmas cooky and its smell reminds me of Christmas time when my family that is to say my brother (living in London), my father (living in Luxembourg), my mother (living in Berlin) and me (living in Cologne) gather in our house in Berlin to celebrate Christmas together. My favourite holiday smells all occur in the winter — something about the cool air amplifies and isolates them. Guy Fawkes Night is the perfect combination of sweet woodsmoke, fizzy firework-smoke and smoke from slightly burnt sausages and caramel apples, usually set against the dampness of early autumn grass.

I wish someone would bottle that, and would trust Andy Tauer to capture it.

The best Christmas smell is from my best friend’s grandma’s house (that I adopted as MY grandma). I’ll explain: she’s a 87 y.o. classy and pleasant lady that loves perfumery and to cook. I can spend hours talking to her about fumes and her travels around the world. The smell that I love is the mix of her foods, sweets, her lovely perfumes (specially Montana) and her old baroque woody furniture, the day after christimas, when she’s so satisfied by giving pleasant moments to all the people around her. That’s incredible: makes me feel like in my childhood, so comfortable, secure, with that lightness, characteristic of that time. You have permission to use my e-mail.

I think the most evocative smells for me happen at Thanksgiving. We roast oysters on the grill briefly, so they will open. Their briney, earthy fragrance is what I imagine tears would smell like. Their lively tang is enjoyed with a swallow of grapefruitish Indian Pale Ale. All the clan runs around and plays after this outdoor treat so the odors of crushed grass and fallen leaves and warm little cheeks and hair that smells wonderfully of outside becomes part of this scent memory. You may of course contact me at my email. What fun and thanks for the chance.

The way they smell when mingling with the cold, windy night is, for me, the scent of possible adventure around every corner! Favourite smell of the Christmas holiday: the Christmas tree lot on a cold afternoon or evening. Brings back so many memories of being out with my Dad at each year’s lot searching for the “perfect” tree (long before they were farmed as they are now) and anxiously anticipating how fabulous it would smell in the house and how my Dad could make any tree perfect by removing a branch in one place and drilling a hole in the trunk for it in another place. My Mom’s decorating skills and lots of icicles would take care of the rest of the gaps.

My favourite holiday is Easter. Living in Australia, it marks the end of our hot summer. We’re in the middle of Autumn and the colder, southerly winds blow up from Antarctica and drive away the smell of the summer bush fires. The air takes on a crisp, ozonic quality and it won’t be long before the jonquils bloom and, then, oh my god, the freesias!

Thanks very much to Andy and Robin for this opportunity. 🙂
