Illamasqua Freak ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2011 40 Comments

Illamasqua Freak

British beauty brand Illamasqua will launch their debut fragrance, Freak, in October:

When creating all the elements of this fragrance, from the scent to the bottle, the packaging to the image, the prime focus has been to deliver a groundbreaking concept that delivers an irresistible assault on the senses, whether you have heard of the Illamasqua brand or not. Freak by Illamasqua has succeeded on every point of that intention.

Illamasqua make-up captures the essence of night-time transformations, unleashing your alter ego and celebrating self-expression. We have now managed, with great care, to distil that attitude into a fragrance and bottle it. It's time to dress up and howl at the moon.

[...] Freak is a concoction of dangerously exotic unconventional flowers which Illamasqua has unashamedly blended together to celebrate the night...

The notes for the unisex fragrance feature black davana, opium flower, belladonna, poison hemlock, datura, queen of the night, frankincense, oud and myrrh.

Illamasqua Freak will be available in 75 ml Eau de Parfum, £59.

(via press release)

I can’t stand snails, or spiders for that matter. they terrify me.
but that one actually looks cute.

it’s quite expensive for a typical makeup brand aswell. but I bet it doesn’t smell all that unique and different. my guess is that it will be like Valentino Rock n Rose but a bit more dark & with more character.

but the name “freak” suggests that their makeup line is for goths or something. you know trying so hard to get across to people that they are different to everybody else. because they relish in the fact of being outcast. I mean, who wants to wear something called “freak”?

I know Illamasqua dub themselves as an “extreme” beauty brand. but gosh, they’re more gothic than Urban Decay used to be before their recent brand re-vamp.

is this the ad aswell ?!!: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=illamasqua+freak&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=3dx4wMlhxZeo6M:&imgrefurl=http://www.mimifroufrou.com/scentedsalamander/2011/09/illamasqua_creates_the_scent_o.html&docid=-I0ohErFCWOSrM&w=341&h=454&ei=4mODTtD4EY2o8QOd_-0J&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=239&vpy=114&dur=177&hovh=259&hovw=194&tx=111&ty=116&page=1&tbnh=129&tbnw=97&start=0&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&biw=1152&bih=773

also on scented salamder. apparently Illamsqua got the trademark before Lady Gaga. I don’t know if that means the name or the formulation.

if you type “Illamasqua freak” into Google images.

the first image is the bottle, and the second one is a close up of what looks like a clown on halloween. that’s the pic I wonder is the ad.

this is the perfume ad, much better: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=illamasqua+freak&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=aEWPQBH5yws89M:&imgrefurl=http://makeupadviceforum.com/2011/10/illamasqua-freak-capsule-collection-of-makeup-and-scent/&docid=ch6aEzvHxDsW8M&imgurl=http://makeupadviceforum.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/freak-imagery.jpg&w=1299&h=973&ei=49qeTueVNI3sOc7q0PkI&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=833&vpy=149&dur=433&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=94&ty=108&sig=104839071143733102363&page=1&tbnh=133&tbnw=177&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0&biw=1152&bih=773

I admit, I find the name to be a little cliche. And this is coming to someone who before finding a career in the Beauty and Fashion industry, flirted around with dozens of “personas” throughout high school – goth included.

But the question I guess I’m asking is whats the harm in making something for those who do want to be called a freak or relish in being an outcast? Especially in a world when all of this years hundreds of fragrance releases are encouraging us to be “Generically Sexy” or “Generically Maternal” or “Appeal to the Masses Manly”.

Atleast there is an effort to become “Generically Diverse” now? ‘

Btw… the NOTES sound interesting. Lets hope for it to live up to they’re reputation.

you right Nickolas, most fragrance houses these days just seem to be greedy and in it for the money, not bothering what the perfume smells like.

and there is a gap in the market for goths/outcasts. but do they wear perfume? obv some do.

and yes the notes sound interesting, I look forward to trying this.

Do poppies (opium flowers) have scent? The ones around me do not.
My usual cynicism about ridiculous copy aside, I do like the scent of hemlock, so this might be nice. I suspect, however, it will not be available in the U.S.

I assume “opium flower” is a fantasy note.

Sephora does carry the line — I know because I bought a nail polish of theirs — so hoping they’ll get the scent.

The original nail polish bottles were really beautiful. At some point, they broke the mold (accidentally, I assume) and had to get a new one but they’re still just gorgeous. The polish itself is excellent too, so it’s one of the few luxury brands of polish that’s actually worth the money (in my humble opinion.) Anyway, I love the perfume bottle and hope I love the fragrance itself since that’s too much to spend on a perfume that I’ll never actually wear.

Yea, I’ll bite. Love the bottle, and the ad copy is a tad over the top, but not absurd. Notes sound a tad different than the usual fruity floral drivelly dreck, though I didn’t realize poppies had a scent. (At least, I assume opium flowers means poppies?!)

    The Goth will love this.

It is over the top — but sounds at least somewhat different than the usual over the top, and yes, hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be the usual fruity floral dreck! I do like the name.

Must try! I assume their inclusion of the ‘opium flower’ is supposed to be some sort of take on the “oriental” flower/spice concoction, which only makes me want to try it more! I love their cosmetics (their tinted glosses are win) and like the list of notes. The ad copy is rather silly, but I do admire what they’re going for and will totally bite. 😉

I love the *entire* Illamasqua cosmetic line. Second only to Make Up Forever. I love a great professional-quality line geared towards amateur cosmetic freaks like myself. If they follow their credo, this will not be a run-of-the-mill fruity-floral. But who knows, maybe this is their attempt to reach a mass market and make a little more coin.

Did anyone imagine being asked what fragrance you are wearing and having to answer ‘FREAK’?

    I tried … and couldn’t.

Give me “Queen of the Night”or “Queen of the Damned” or “True Blood”or “Vamp essence” or “Night Child… anything but FREAK!”

Well I guess they could have called it “Spawn”…

Love the bottle but wary of the power of the flower! I do like Illamasqua cosmetics and they do generally get the ‘dark’ stuff right so I will definitely be sniffing this.

This is my very first time hearing of this brand but the fragrance sounds amazing! I just e-mailed them about the U.S launch date. When they get back to me I’ll report back
