The smell gets worse and worse

Posted by Robin on 11 September 2010 12 Comments

It isn’t awful at first. Garlic or onions? Or maybe cloves or really bad perfume? But after a few minutes, the smell gets worse and worse, and eventually, you realize that it smells like a landfill. That is not a coincidence; the smell was “captured,” technically speaking, at a landfill, according to the campaign.

— Republican candidate for New York governor Carl Paladino is using a scented mailer to evoke "the stink of Albany". Read more at Candidate’s Scented Mailing Says Albany ‘Stinks’ at the New York Times. As always, no politics in the comments please!

Delivering “garbage smelling things” to the constituents. Would that not be counterproductive, as the scent would be associated with the person mailing it. NO? Or am I missing the point? Sorry, I am not a politically minded person so these things tend to fly over my head.

I would guess it would get more attention that your average mailer — I would bet most people do what I do, which is throw them all away without even glancing at them? And looks like it got him a nice big article in the NYT, too!

But you’re right also that it could backfire.

Ahh, I see, now I understand. The publicity is what he was after and got. Sometimes I’m a little short sighted 🙁 .

    I guess that’s clever.

    But nasty.

I just hope the stink doesn’t linger after you’ve thrown the mailer away. I wonder if it would contaminate the rest of the mail in the mailbox?

Very! Would not be pleased to get that in the mail.

Think of the poor letter carriers! To be confined in a small mail truck with hundreds of these stinky political mailers might incite any postal worker to head to the landfill t… for an unofficial (and illegal) “delivery”.

I grew up near Albany. I don’t associate it with the “stink” of politic.

I remember that there would always be one day in September, when suddenly the air turned crisp, and you felt as well as smelled the turning of the leaves and felt tart apples in the air (even if you were now where near the orchards).

In Spring, there would be a gradual evolution of lilac in the air, until one day all the lilacs would be in bloom and the magnolia would be coming out.
