Robert Piguet Calypso ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 10 June 2010 36 Comments

Calypso fragrance by Robert Piguet

Robert Piguet will be launching Calypso, a re-worked version of a late 1950s fragrance, later this summer:

Acclaimed perfumer Robert Piguet created Calypso to represent the allure and enchantment of the mythical nymph. A mesmerizing mix of contrasting notes such as mandarin, suede, iris, patchouli, rose and amber. Sealed within the iconic Robert Piguet black glass flacon, orange accents epitomize the exotic allure of the the fragrance within.

Robert Piguet Calypso will be available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum, and will be exclusive to Harrods in the UK at launch. (via press release from Harrods)

oooohhhhh!!! Am i wrong to be very, very excited about this? perfumeshrine has an excellent article about the original by the way, with a very interesting reference to its original bottle…. Hm, so this won’t be available in perfume then? Shame…

Do not know if it will be in Parfum, only that Harrods is not announcing it in Parfum…we’ll see when it gets added to the Piguet website.

Exclusive to Harrods, urgh. I can’t try Futur because of that and now this one too.

Also, I’m hoping it won’t be as much of a re-orchestration as Visa was. It was okay but I definitely prefer the other three because they still smell like they are from a different era.

It is no longer exclusive to Harrods though…

Yeah, I smelled Futur recently at The Perfume House, so I know it’s available other places. And I think you can still at least get samples from TPC.

I don’t have anything to compare it to, since I’ve never smelled the original, but I absolutely loved it. I felt like it was Bandit if you took out the chypre and punched up the greenness, but that might just be me. Sigh… I’m still plotting on how I can justify the expense to buy it right now. It’s my only lemming currently.

Well, if I break down and buy a bottle a sample will be on it’s way to you.

Actually Boo, since you haven’t smelled it yet, and I already have to put a pkg together for you, I’ll add a little decant of the Futur if you like.

Miss Kitty, do you mean The Perfume House in Portland, OR? I have been thinking about making a trip there, but am frankly terrified of the place! What’s it like??? Their website is so enigmatic I can’t get a feel for it, or what they really stock, at all.

I was at the Perfume House in Portland about 6 weeks ago, and they do have Futur. It’s a great place, the people there are friendly and helpful so you shouldn’t be terrified at all. The most frustrating thing about the place is that they’ve been in business long enough that they have testers of things, like Etro’s Messe de Minuit and Knize Ten, that they can no longer get from a distributor (and they won’t sell the last tester). If you’re interested in fragrances, and you’re in the Northwest, it’s worth a special trip (and don’t forget to stop in at Powell’s)

Thanks! I think I will try to make it up there in the next couple weeks. I love Powells! I will leave my boyfriend there whilst I go sniff bottles : )

Obviously I must get myself down to The Perfume House ASAP! I figured they would have it fairly soon after its launch.

I think it’s still exclusive to Harrods in UK, unfortunately. Their website says Exclusive, I can’t find any other UK retailer that sells it and paying for a sample from US just seems a bit absurd in this case. Pah!

No need to apologise, Robin, not unless the whole exclusive to Harrods thing was your idea, anyway :p I’m just being a grump. Bandit is still my big Piguet love and will be my next FB purchase. Mercifully that one is available in my neck of the woods!

Have to admit that while they’ve all been extremely well-done, so far nothing has seemed as wonderful as Bandit & Fracas. I do appreciate the effort to reissue, but kind of wish at this point they’d just do something entirely new.

You can order Futur from fragrance.net (and use BASENOTES in the coupon line to get 15% off). I ordered a bottle and really like it, although it’s not (for me) a warm weather fragrance. But I’m looking forward to using it come fall. Can’t wait to smell this one – it sounds nice.

Since there’s no way to accurately depict in words the noise I made when I saw a new Piguet, just imagine the dramatic intake of breath. (Ok, it was something like: Hhhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!)

BUT… not too keen on the amber. And I’m anosmic to iris. Well, maybe this is the universe’s way of saying, You have enough! Stop!

The sigh that was heard around the world, lol?

Yes, this one set off the only lemming alert I’ve had all year so far from something completely unsiffed! I like all the Piguet so much – this one is likely to be good!

Are you still on the fence about Visa? That one is worming it’s way into the rotting apple that is my heart. I’m at the point where if someone sold a Piguet Set I would be dumb enough to blow my money on it.

A Piguet set? Now we’re talking. I just love those black glass bottles! Visa … you know, I would be perfectly happy if someone gave a bottle of that to me as a gift – really pretty stuff. But it is not in the front running for FB funds. Same with Futur – also so great – such a great line!! I do have a bottle of Baghari that I got as a gift. Calypso sounds wonderful! I think I could be pursuaded to split a bottle of Visa though ;-)

I wish more of the perfume houses would offer sets, particularly the more “niche” stuff. I mean, it’s serious perfume lovers like us who want to own everything, but most of us can’t afford a FB of everything (maybe someday, when I win the lottery…)

I so want to find a Rober Piguet scent I can love! Bandit and Fracas are genius but for me unwearable because of the tuberose. But it doesn’t sound as if this will be available her for a while, and I already have so many little sample vials underfoot that even I’m starting to have some pangs!

How LUSCIOUS This Sounds! I Love Piguet! Bandit, Baghari, Fracas, Visa all of them are winners, although i do despise this idea of “REFORMULATION” case in point, i was able to score a full 1 ounce pure parfum size of the ORIGINAL Arpege from Lanvin and the version that it is in it’s current incarnation is only a VAGUE iteration of the original… not to say that the current market version of Arpege is BAD, in fact it’s Damned FANTASTIC, but the original, OH GOD! well that’s another story altogether! but this sounds Cravable in that Special Way that all Piguet Scents seem to be! am hoping to get a whiff if not a bottle!

I was lucky enough to find a sealed bottle of the original ea de toilette in a flea market here in Italy last year. At first, it smells like a variation of Shalimar – particularly with warm orange/mandarin variations. Then some depth of a spicey quality (perhaps cinnamon) emerges, together with flowers. One flower is certainly a heavyish rose, but there is something like wallflowers or frangipani there too. It drys down to a spicey flower, held together with a soft amber. The bottle is tall and oval shaped in cross-section, with a black label set in a groove in the glass. The outer card box is an orangey colour with a white “Robert Piguet” triangular lable and the black band label around the centre.
