Perfume in the magazines, December 2009: Allure, Details, Elle plus many more

Posted by Robin on 4 December 2009 10 Comments

MAG1

We're late this month! But here it is, perfume coverage in the December issues of Allure, Details, Elle, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Vogue, Glamour and Lucky, and please comment on any fragrance-related coverage you’ve seen in other fashion & beauty magazines:

Allure

Cover: Kirsten Dunst

Scent strips: Donna Karan Cashmere Mist; Giorgio Armani Idole d'Armani; Dior J'adore & Cologne Florale; Versace Versense; Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne; Bvlgari Blv II; Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy.

Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter includes Chanel No. 5 Essential Bath Oil and the Marc Jacobs Lola solid perfume ring in the “Editor’s Favorites” (p. 58), and the “Smell This” feature in which random passersby comment on a fragrance features Moschino Glamour (p. 66). “Eau Victoria” (p. 66) is a short interview with Victoria Beckham about Signature Story, and "The Twilight Effect" (p. 68) mentions Bath & Body Works Twilight Woods perfume.

This month's Beauty 101 is about perfume: how to find one, how to wear it. It says that "at least 118 new scents" were introduced in 2009 — hello? I think somebody lost count very early in the year. Included are lists of "Light Winter Scents" (Burberry Brit, Jo Malone Sweet Lime & Cedar, etc) and "Iris Fragrances" (Prada Infusion d'Iris, Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, etc).

House Warming (p. 102) is an article by Frederic Malle on home fragrancing ("home scents should not be sexy"), including a plug for his new fragrance diffuser.

Scents of Place (p. 176) is about how geographic locations inspire fragrance ("The way I create our Jardins is not about capturing or reproducing faithfully the smell of a place, but rather capturing the creative idea of a place", Jean-Claude Ellena). Also included is a box inset with various celebrities and fashion designers answering the question: Do you bring your own room scent when you travel?

Underground Beauty (p. 184) includes two perfumes: 88 Orange Blossom and Talulamae Perfume Oil.

The very latest Marie Claire has a whole page devoted to masculine scents that women can wear. They pitch it as “gender bending” – actually, there’s a lot of sexuality-related articles in that issue. Interview with Ellen (LOVE!), a small mention of transsexuals in Iran, and then a page devoted to getting women to smell like guys. Best issue in a very long time.

Thanks! Is that December or January?

January – the one with Natalie Portman on the cover. Normally, I read Marie Claire halfway through and then toss is across the room in anger (they write some incredibly stupid things), but this was a really good issue and the perfumes they recommended were more niche – perfumistas will be proud.

Again, thanks. They mail very early, wish Allure would do that.

I hear you about skipping articles in Marie Claire – like the American Geisha one last month. I actually read the whole thing, but was mostly horrified throughout the article.

    I do like J’adore. I think for a fruity/ floral, it’s pretty well done.

Those scent strips always make me sneeze for some reason. I don’t know what kind of additive they put in there but I avoid those strips like the plague.

I can’t remember the last time I bought a beauty magazine either, I mostly browse them at doctors’ offices :D
