Curious, unpredictable, and mischievous

Posted by Robin on 4 November 2009 18 Comments

Bai Yun is curious, unpredictable, and mischievous. She enjoys anything scented with cloves or pine and men's cologne!

— From Meet the Pandas at the San Diego Zoo, where the the pandas "like to play with enrichment items like piles of ice or sawdust, puzzles made of bamboo with food inside, and different scents like spices". At the moment of this writing, you can watch Bai Yun sleeping in the birthing den on the zoo's Panda Cam. Many thanks to JanJan for the link.

my brother works for the san diego zoo and they are always requesting donations of enrichment items, including perfume. i’ve donated a few old bottles myself. the big cats especially love perfumed items – there is a lion who goes crazy for obsession.

I would swear I’ve heard of that lion before…did you comment on that previously?

it is possible that i have! i looked online to see if maybe there had been an article about him. apparently the cats at the cincinnati zoo like obsession for men –
Cincinnati’s park sprays its piñatas with cologne to attract predators. (It says cats prefer Obsession for Men.)

That is great! I wonder if animals differ from species to species in what they prefer, or if it differs by individual, like us :)

That is so interesting! I would never have known. The lion who loves Obsession is great. :) Maybe big cats have very 80’s taste in perfume.

I wonder if Jungle L’Elephant is popular at the zoo.

That’s really interesting. My cats seem to hate anything scented (they picked the wrong person to live with!). I see there is a live online panda baby shower tomorrow. :)

Isn’t that cute? But we missed the naming contest.

Thank for the link Robin and Janjan! I watched every check-up video on the baby panda. He is quite possibly the cutest baby ever. Some of you may know I’m a wildlife expert, so I loooove Pandas-what a paint job God did!

He really is adorable. I have checked the Panda cam several times today — great fun.

I wish I had your cats, Jill. Mine try to lick the perfume off of me. They’re weird. They also like lotion, and possibly might be attracted to makeup as well.

Wow — your cats are the polar opposite of mine, Miss Kitty! Yours are much more appropriate cats for a perfumista. My boy cat especially can’t stand it if I spray anything or put any lotion on — I become really offensive to him and he flees from me until it dries down.

That’s because the males are more territorial. And they will still spray on things even if he’s been fixed.

    Fresh perfume is very threatening.
