Escada Marine Groove ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2009 52 Comments

Escada Marine Groove fragrance

Escada has launched Marine Groove, the latest in their series of summer limited edition fragrances (see Pacific Paradise, Sunset Heat, Moon Sparkle, Ocean Lounge):

Marine Groove, the evocative new limited-edition fragrance from Escada. The scent is a blend of fruity overtones and floral undertones creating a fresh, modern fragrance that evokes the spirit of summer.

The notes for the fruity floral scent include passion fruit, peony, jasmine and musk.

Escada Marine Groove is available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette, and can be found now at Nordstrom. (via nordstrom, additional information via jebe.de, with thanks to jonr951 for the tip!)

A fruity floral with teenage packaging and a truly dreadful name? My, hold me back.

Are they aiming for the under-7s market?

I think the Escada seasonal LEs do very well, and they’re generally sold at more upscale stores than most youth-oriented fare (this one is at Nordstrom, and last year an SA at Neiman Marcus told me Ocean Lounge was selling well). So who knows who is buying them!

I bought one of the LE’s about twenty years back – a marine something in a jade green bottle. It was actually rather nice! But once they started down the brightly-coloured, brightly-scented LEs, they seemed to become unable to do anything else. I gett he impression they sell well in stores, so there’s clearly something about that ffloral base that appeals to people.

They all smell the same now. It takes work to tell them apart. I have to admit I liked Moon Sparkle, but had the good sense to recognize I would never wear it, and thankfully did not give in to stupidity and buy a bottle.

I had a bottle of Lily Chic that I gave away probably a decade ago. I wish I’d have hung onto it, as I think it was that last of the non-fruity floral Escade LE’s.

I meant Escada. Have no idea what “Escade” would be.

I had enough trouble parallel parking my Subaru this morning. I don’t think I could handle an Escalade. 🙂

Just don’t parallel park. 😉 I never do…and if I have to park further away and walk a bit, well…my hips will thank me. I was curious about the Lily one, but given what a bland sugary mess the rest have been, I crossed it off the list and moved on.

The lily smelled very green, if memory serves. I’d call it a Chamade with less character. It wasn’t my favorite thing in the world at the time, but my tastes have changed a lot since then. It definitely wasn’t fruity, and for a floral it wasn’t a fluffy floral.

I liked one of the Escada LEs ages ago, but I can’t remember which one. They are definitely fruit-cocktail scents for the most part.

Another one, wow! Out of all Escada LEs I liked Ibiza Hippie (it smelled like blackcurrant jam!) and Moonlight Sparkle – it was remarkably similar to Ibiza Hippie:)) Wonder if this one is in the same vein…

Is there no men’s version of this? There was one for Moon Sparkle, and my theory at the time was that they were deliberately trying to kill off the men’s line (though who knows why) by giving a scent a name that in all probability no man would ever buy or wear. (It didn’t help matters that the men’s version was just no good.) Marine Groove would make a perfectly good name for a men’s scent, although come to think of it I would expect to see an ad with dancing marines in it or something.

I don’t know…could be that there is one and it just isn’t out yet (the official launch date for these is always February). But I don’t think there was an Ocean Lounge for men?? Can’t remember.

I loved Lily Chic it was … chic! Really 🙂

Got Sexy Graffiti as a present wayyy back, I think it was the 2nd in the row of LEs, it was very sweet but with that blackcurrant zing, I actually enjoyed it occasionally. It took me 3 years to finish that bottle. Since then I honestly can’t tell them apart, they all smell like a mix of Pina Colada and Strawberry Margarita these days.

They sell well here too, apparently. All girls I ever met buying or wearing Escada LE’s look like Bratz or like the dolls from My Scene.
Am wearing Lancome Tropiques today and feeling very sophisticated by comparison 😉

I love Sexy Graffiti. It came out when I was probably in the 6th grade and it’s the earliest I can remember liking perfume 🙂 The woman at the counter gave me this cool pink paint roller foam thing to test it on.

personally, i’m peeved that they stopped doing summer LEs for men…

all because Moon Sparkle for Men was seriously crap.

(like Chandler Burr, neon fruits do kinda appeal to me…)

“Neon fruits”! Dead on! Years ago, my brother bought my mother one of these as a gift. I couldn’t imagine a more wildly inappropriate choice for my mom’s taste (but it’s the thought that counts). But seriously, very young fragrances are really appropriate for Escada; haven’t they positioned themselves as a trophy-wife brand?

They don’t usually appeal to me, except when they’re REALLY neon, like Byredo Pulp.

I tried the Ocean Lounge one I think, a lil while back and the top notes were really really appealing. My friend commented “oh wow it is really fresh…like shower gel”, so 20 GBP for the Escada or 2 GBP for a new shower gel. For that I can just squirt on some shower gel and wear it.

Ocean Blue was the third LE in an aqua opaque bottle, following Chiffons Sorbet and Un Ete En Provence. It was then reissued as Blue Romance, I presume for the drugstore discount market. I bought 2 bottles. Loved it!! I believe that only Sunset Heat and Moon Sparkle had a mens’ (so far anyway!). I have several of the bottles all lined up according to release date. I bought Moon Sparkle cheaply just to get the new smooth modern bottle. I wear the fragrance for gardening but it’s pretty gah! It’s not horrible, just unoriginal. Really really tired of fruity florals. Maybe the “hippie’ and “groove” labels are aimed at Baby Boomers. Ha! It’s interesting how Ocean Lounge and Marine Groove are neither ozonic nor aquatic!

I have to admit- I liked Moon Sparkle because it smelled like the blue flavor of Hubba Bubba. Color me a neon fruit fan! Ocean Lounge was more Hawaiian Punch to my nose which was never one of my favorites growing up. Now if they made one that smelled like Capri Sun Ecto Cooler (the one with Slimer on the pouch)….. if it’s actually a tart passion fruit this may just be the Ecto-cooler scent of my childhood!

It would be fun if they’d do something neon-pucker inducting like Pulp! I can’t imagine you’re hurting for samples but as much as I like it I actually have more Byredo Pulp than I know what to do with (a little goes a long way). I’m pretty new to decanting but I could send some your way.

Does anyone remember their Tropical Punch, from the summer of 2000, a season or two before Sexy Graffiti? It was Carribean in a bottle! Adored it, have no more… desperately trying to get hold of one …

Maybe I’m just an old, wet, moldy blanket but shouldn’t something called Marine Groove have an oceanic smell?

Funny thing is, I’m pretty sure I’m in the target age group. It frightens me, actually.

For me, these Escada Summer limited editions are fragrances that you buy each summer, wear to the beach, at the movie theaters, walking on the boardwalk, etc. To make a nice summer fruity cocktail scent memory “Ahh, the summer of ’08…”
And then you put them away forever (or sell on ebay)
Or preferably buy the one from last year on Ebay about half full for 10$.
