Bond no. 9 Perfume ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 18 August 2009 45 Comments

Bond No. 9 Perfume

Bond no. 9 will launch Bond no. 9 Perfume, the line's signature fragrance, this fall:

Since 2003, Bond No. 9 has advanced the art of perfumery with a riveting collection of New York neighborhood scents—from Wall Street to Chelsea Flowers to New Haarlem. But our latest fragrance, debuting in time for the holidays, takes a new direction, conjuring up a contemporary New York version of the ancient Eastern oud. And as our perfume took shape, we must confess: we fell deeply, madly, absolutely in love with it. Here at last was a perfumer’s fragrance, that seemed to emerge for our own pleasure (… but of course it’s for yours too).

So at Bond No. 9, we had met our match and had no choice but to name this oud Bond No. 9 Perfume, not for a New York neighborhood, but for our NoHo address— a fixed point in the realm of the senses.

Bond no. 9 Perfume was developed by perfumer Laurent Le Guernec; the fragrance notes include oud, rose, tonka bean and musk. The scent is decribed as "seductive" and "frankly erotic".

Bond no. 9 Perfume will be available in 100 ml Parfum, $330. (via press release)

Other recent releases from Bond no. 9: Andy Warhol Success is a Job in New York, Bond no. 9 for Harrods.

And I can’t help but say, “Oh, another Oud-Rose thing….”

    And I like oud too.

Then again, several Bonds haven’t agreed with me. Will await reviews.

When I read this I thought, I wonder if they decided they wanted a signature perfume, then commissioned someone to do it, or if in the course of testing out various submissions for another scent, they loved this one so much that they said, “THIS HAS TO BE THE BASE OF A SIGNATURE SCENT!!!” Not that I need an answer, but just curious what inspired them to veer away from the neighborhood theme and create that ONE signature. Sounds a bit like the scent came first before the naming of it.

Well, either way, it sounds heavenly!!! If they were truly blown away by it (rather than just saying it for marketing purposes), then it’s probably pretty darned good!

“seductive,” “frankly erotic” and $330/100 ml…oy! I like Chinatown, which I sprang for (on eBay) but this seems pricey even for them!

Strictly speaking, their EdPs are 20% concentration, which some brands would call extrait anyway.

Oud? Did I hear Oud? Hehe. I know I will be trying this one. I notice that I like ROSE alot more than I thought. I am looking forward to the latest addition to the Warhol series. Brooklyn…was a big dissapointment for me…glad it was a present.

It is nice that oudh is the new iris (not that I was ready for iris to step down). Is there a new cheaper process for oudh similar to the faster aging process for iris butter that is helping it along into all of these new fragrances? I wonder, what will be the next oudh? I am hoping some new sandalwood aroma chemical that really subs well for the Indian stuff.

Don’t know, and don’t know if there’s a wonderful new synthetic oud either. I know nothing 🙂

I agree Monkeytoe, I love oud and am surmising that some new ingredient/process must have come along similar to the iris situation to make it cheaper to produce. At any rate, I will be very much looking forward to testing this one. I just sampled Success is a Job in New York and it is definitely on my “to buy” list – it is a yummy gourmand scent. Not quite as good as Chinatown, but then, that would be hard to beat. I like it better than Lexington Ave. though.

I adore Chinatown and no other Bond I’ve tried so far comes close. This does sound damn sexy, however, though I wonder if Montale’s beat them to this sort of thing given their myriad of oud frags. I also think Montale (at least some of the earlier releases according to what I’ve read and tried) makes perfumes with quite a high concentration, too, so if I can find one like Bond’s signature for half the price, I might just go for that. I still only buy Chinatown when I can get a good price for it, since there’s so many wanted fragrances I’m budgeting for and so little free funds to buy them all… 😉

I have a feeling Montale & Bond have different audiences…might not matter if the product is similar.

I dunno, that price is pretty steep! Don’t get me wrong-I like a few of Bond’s scents-Coney Island, Hamptons, Eau de NY, Lex Ave, Chinatown…. but I (IMHO) think Montale does Ouds beautifully.

You guys should do an oud round-up (unless you have already and I missed it) just like the big iris posts you did a while back. (but really, iris > oud, anyday!)

This sounds good to me, but I’m another one who hasn’t found any Bond I love except Chinatown. I like a few of them but not enough to buy, so far. Given the price, it will probably be a good thing if I don’t love this one either.

Oh, I do really like that one, you’re right! Not as much as Chinatown, but it’s a very good one and if someone gave it to me, I’d be happy. 🙂 Still haven’t smelled the Success is a Job … one either.

It certainly reads like it’s a Montale….and I like oud in smallish doses. So far Chinatown has been the best of the Bond bunch but still not worth the price for a FB….the others I’ve tried haven’t wowed me…this one seems a little too pricey. Ok, if a bottle threw itself in my path; I’d give it a sniff (just to be polite, right?) but I won’t seek it out.

Okay, bingo – just read this on Vetivresse:
“It’s been rumored that both [Kilian’s Pure Oud and Bond’s Harrod’s Special Edition] employ a new natural ingredient developed by Givaudan called Oud Orpur — and I’d wager that Tom Ford’s Private Blend Oud Wood employs the same, albeit at a greater dilution”
So this is probably why we are seeing an explosion of oud scents. Vetivresse really likes the Bond Harrods Special Edition, except that it’s only available in a special Swarovski crystal edition at $600+ a bottle. Yikes. So I’m hoping this one will be just as good, at half the price.

Yeah, half the price is such a steal! As Daisy and I were discussing yesterday, we really lower our standards sometimes and consent to wear such “bargain perfumes” once in awhile. Try not to judge us.

I’m curious about that “natural ingredient developed by Givaudan”… doesn’t that seem like an oxymoron? What’s natural about anything developed by Givaudan? Except I don’t understand a thing about aromachemistry — are some of these things that come out of their labs actually “natural”?

yeah, it’s a little like becoming desensitized to violence from TV and Video games….we become desensitized to niche perfume prices…I used to gasp in dismay when something hit the $100 mark….now; that seems a bargain!
I think maybe there’s a linguistic/semantics issue going on here–if they are using compounds that derived from naturally occurring substances then it could be “natural” , technically. In that way petrol products could be considered natural as well. It’s a little tricky to twist things that way, but we are used to this entire business being more than a little manipulative, yes?

Mmmmm, yeah…. that “all natural”, “organic” (as in chemistry) stuff that can kill you… like hemlock? Or snake venom?

how about some nice Radon? it’s all-natural!
I’m afraid we’ve all been conditioned by the media to equate “natural” and “organic” with good, healthy, and obviously preferable…but that’s not always the case and sometimes it’s really bad. But they’ve worked our heads and now those marketers slap “all natural” on something and people just can’t wait.
A dermatologist that I go to occasionally told me once that she sees more patients with skin conditions as a result of using “all natural botanicals” than anything else. Oh, what was I there about? Had annoying itchy patches—guess what I was using? Shampoo and conditioner with 100% natural botanicals. I’m a statistic.

Joe, it’s one of those deals where they take the original ingredient and remove some aspects…so it’s still the natural product, just re-engineered.

YAWWNNNN…..zzzzzzzz……. Vague, Vague Vague on the description and really… Oud again? with Roses? Why Not Oud with Narcissus or Oud with Styrax and Oppoponax or Oud With Osmanthus…. BORING! I mean i will give it a sniff, but other than the fragrances that were made for Saks, haven’t been overwhelmed by anything Bond No. 9…. this doesn’t seem like it will thrill me too much either!
