Tom Ford Bois Marocain ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 8 May 2009 49 Comments

Tom Ford Private Blend Bois Marocain fragrance

Tom Ford has launched Bois Marocain, the latest addition to the Tom Ford Private Blend Collection:

Inspired Morocco’s vibrant warmth and richness, its very essence surrounds the scenes with earthy hues, sumptuous woods and seductive aromas. At the heart of this complexity is Thuya, one of the regions most rare and precious woods.

The scents top notes are a mélange on Madagascan black pepper, Cypress and Bergamot that provide fresh peaks and sparkle to balance its darkly refined opulence. Baies Rose Orpur delivers a spiced floral vibrancy, while the smooth heart of the fragrance, Thuya, drenches the skin like molten gold.

Tom Ford Bois Marocain is available now at Selfridges in the UK, in 250 ml Eau de Parfum. (via selfridges)

This sounds wonderful, though at this price level, there’s no way. Had to Google Thuya [aka Thuja].

It does sound lovely. None of the TF PBs has tempted me to actually spend that much money though…

I wonder if this is the one I’ve got on my wishlist as ‘Arabian Wood’? I’ve got a bunch of things on there that never seem to actually emerge, or presumably get released under a different name from the original rumour!

I think that one was an exclusive to one of the Tom Ford boutiques, so assume this is different? Not sure though.

No I thought the same thing when I heard about this months ago.

Arabian Wood and Bois Marocain are different TF scents.

I preferred Arabian Wood personally. Bois Marocain smelled too pedestrian and reminded me of H&M by Comme des Garcons (which reminds me of Rush for Men by Gucci).

I wrote a review of these 2 (and Italian Cypress) last month on Perfume Shrine here: http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2009/04/arabian-wood-bois-marocain-and-italian.html

LOL! Agreed! I think back to the original Formula of Joseph Abboud for men which seemed just overrun with Black Pepper and have found it insidiously unpleasant ever since! ICK! though my faith in Tom Ford is going to be tested by this one… i will give it a hopeful sniff in wishes that i am not irreverasbly turned off!

They are pricy but they are so long lasting too :-). And the character of perfumes is very distinct & well made. I think you can smell the quality of perfume ingredients. I love most of them.

I’ve liked a few, but I think in general I’m not as impressed as most people are. I did really like Oud Wood.

What gets me is the 250ml size!
I can always skim some money fron the grocery budget, but given the number of bottles that I already own, I won
t live long enough to wear all 250 ml of it!
PLAESE give us 30ml and we will buy!!!

Molten gold? How similar is that to a molten river of wood? Also, in general, is it me or are the TFs awfully sweet? And what’s thuja? Like thujone? Wormwood? Or something different? (why am I asking you to think for me, off to google!)

Joe, that’s so funny! And I’m always amazed at what people contact us wanting to know — eg, where can I find Dior Addict? I want a nice form letter that says, well, if you type it into GOOGLE, you will see etc.

An SA sprayed this on me last week in Selfridges, telling me it was created for their anniversary. I got a brief, spicy whiff, before another one yelled “FLORA BY GUCCI?” at me and accosted the same wrist before I have time to protest.

    Oh well, next time!

Ah, I guess you could say the effect was something like…a peony withering in a sandstorm? Lol it was a shame, my first impression wasn’t earth shattering (bit heavy on the pepper too), but I would have enjoyed sniffing it for the rest of the day…I do intend to give this another try when I’m next passing through!

OK, so is this Thuja – one of the region’s rarest** and most precious woods – Korean Thuja, Japanese Thuja, or Sichuan Thuja? Cos thur ain’t no Moroccan Thuja, no sirree.

I shan’t be trying this unless some kind soul sends a sample in a swap (though I am technically on a swap break *coughcough*), but do have to agree that TFs seem to have the half-life of plutonium. On my skin that is extremely rare: most things fade within a couple of hours, tops.

** did nobody tell TF’s copy people that most single-syllable adjectives take ‘est’ as the comparative, and not ‘most + original adjective’?

It’s some truly horrid ad copy, isn’t it? I was very surprised. Sounds almost like it started in another language and was translated into yet another before being translated back to English.

Sorry, that wasn’t very clear of me: what I meant was that there is no botanically-named Thuja from Morocco – not that one cannot find items made of Thuja while in Morocco.

I tried both of these at Galeries Lafayette in Paris 2 weeks ago. (the Arabian Wood and the Moroccan Wood) The Arabian Wood was nicer, the Moroccan Wood was kind of blah, I have almost no memory of it left it was so indistinct. That said, I still love Oud Wood best of all of his woods thus far. I won’t be purchasing either Arabian or Moroccan Wood.

I love almost anything TF does and his PB Fragrances have mostly been Hits with very few misses (that Tuscan Leather one is Hideous and i am sorry, Oud Wood did absolutely NOTHING For me!) But Champaca Absolute, Tobacco Vanille, Noir De Noir and GOD BLESS US ALL VELVET GARDENIA! OH HELLZAPOPPIN! those are like Bliss in a bottle! this again with that dangerously unpleasant Black Pepper note makes me think i am going to be putting this in the Hideous column as well…But One can Hope for the Best!

Its a matter of taste :-) I found Champaca Absolute not enough appealing. I’d say a shallow beauty. Like a beautiful woman without personality :-)

I own a bottle of Tuscan Leather & Oud Wood and I chose those based on their distinct characters. I guess Tuscan Leather is not easy too like.

We are opposites since Oud Wood is the only one I’d really like to own…the rest all struck me as not worth the $ (strictly speaking, I don’t even think the Oud Wood is worth the $).

I have not smelled it, but there was a thread on basenotes comparing Arabian Wood & Bois Marocain awhile back, you could probably find it there with a search.

Arabian Wood is exclusive to one of the Tom Ford boutiques, can’t remember which, but I think Italian Cypress was also an exclusive & it ended up in general distribution eventually. Maybe it depends on how well they do?

Italian Cypress was the exclusive of TF milan store opening since june 2008…a little bit retro but fascinating.
Arabian Wood was the eclusive for TF kuwait store opening but i don’t know why it didn’t opened in march 09 and probabily it change the release to dubai mall injune 09

Why oh why do these fragrances have to be so expensive? Haven’t they heard of crisis?

Can anyone compare Bois Marocain with Tuscan Leather? Robin? Tuscan Leather smelled wonderful to me.

I feel SOOOO close to caving in to a 50 ml bottle of Lalique Encre Noire EDT – it smelled amazing on me and may replace my favorite Nu which I can’t seem to find anymore (sigh & sob)
