Gravatars & Identicons

Posted by Robin on 25 March 2009 79 Comments

A reminder: registered users can get their own gravatar (the little image next to your name in the comments) by going to gravatar.com and signing up for an account using the same email address you used for your account here.

Yesterday, commenters without gravatars saw a rather generic "mystery man" image next to their name. Today we've replaced those with identicons — geometric images associated with your user name. If you hate your identicon, you can still go get a gravatar.

Otherwise, everything seems to be running smoothly at the moment other than the still-missing 8000 comments, which I hope to find later in the week. Do comment or email (robin at nstperfume dot com) if you find a broken page, or have any other problems using the site. And if you missed it, the We moved post explains most of what is new at Now Smell This.

Posting partially to see what my identicon will be. But really to say, great job updating the site! I was a frequent reader, but always ended up having issues setting up a user name so never commented.

Glad to see everything coming along!

It did work, but I think I like everyone else’s better. ‘~)

I will live with it for a bit and see if it grows on me. Or maybe I will get fancy, put my photo back up and then take it down and see if I get a different geographic design. Do you think I need a life?

I don’t think you’ll get a different design, but I’m not positive…if you click on the indenticon link in the article, it explains how it’s generated.

Nope, same design. I changed it to a different photo. A photo I took at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Yes, I do need a life. Ha!

I have to say…the whole gravatars thing is way cool. I’ve never had one before so it was hard to choose. Spent at least 10 minutes pouring over my pictures….then finally picked a water lily from my very own koi pond….then my daughter blasted me for not picking a picture of a DAISY! sheesh, can’t seem to make anyone happy these days!
Then everybody is getting the amish quilt patterns today…. I wonder what I’d get…but I’m too lazy to switch, so I’m sticking with my pink water lily….I’m sure my fish are pleased with me.

aww, thanks…but I can’t take any credit…I stuck it in the water and let it grow…no skill involved. Right now the pond is nothing but water, rocks and some very disgruntled looking fish. When they see me they swim over obviously wondering why I won’t feed them. But you can’t feed koi in really cold weather so I feel like a great big meanie.

My MIL has a mug that says, “Raising children is like raising corn: it’s hard work, it takes a lot of time, and there’s no money in it.”

So true of so many things that are worth doing, though. (Thanks again, Robin.)

        Ah, yes. The quarterly guide…

It’s done. I will put it up as soon as I figure out (1) what Contribute means when it tells me “object is not a file” and (2) why it does nothing but tell me that. That is not what I call a contribution. That has been my week. I am sure you understand.

Hi, Haunani – those Hawaiian quilts are so beautiful, aren’t they? The CEO (um, that’s what I call my husband, sort of in jest) and I stayed in a little mom-and-pop hotel on the Big Island a couple of summers ago, and the halls were decorated with framed quilts. I’d never seen anything like them before! And I live in the Appalachian Mountains, so I have SEEN some quilts.

Thank you Robin – it’s a few roses that I dried for potpourri and they were so pretty [one of them actually kept it’s purple color – hard to do] I put them in a vase and took a picture instead. I’ll probably change gravatars a lot tho – cause I have so many lovely images saved on my computer – plus I get bored easily. haha

I know this is late, but I seem to be running into a Catch-22 trying to obtain a gravatar. I re-signed to NST using my old user name. When I try to activate my account on Gravatar I’m told my user name is already taken (by me, I assume) and I’m sent over to WordPress.com and told to log in under my user name. Unfortunately, when I try to do this WordPress.com does not recognize my user name and password. And my NST account will not let me change my user name. I’m feeling like I missed the gravatar boat, so to speak. Has anyone else had this problem (or is it only me that is web challenged?) I can only hope I get a decent indenticon.

So, let me make sure I understand: faraway is the username you want here, but it’s already taken at gravatar.com?

That’s ok. Just use a different username at gravatar — all that matters is that the email address on both accounts matches.

      Does that make sense?
