Diesel Only the Brave, John Varvatos Artisan ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2009 12 Comments

Diesel Only The Brave cologne for menJohn Varvatos Artisan cologne for men

Diesel will launch Only The Brave (shown above left), a new fragrance for men, in March, although it is not expected to reach the US until May. The new fragrance was named for Diesel founder Renzo Rosso's Italian holding company and his charitable foundation, both of which have the same name. The bottle is modeled after Rosso's fist.

The oriental, woody, and leathery juice, developed by International Flavors & Fragrance’s Aliénor Massenet, Olivier Polge & Pierre Wargnye, bravely plays with opposites. It starts with a masculine and fashion-related note of leather. “But because Diesel is a joyful brand, it’s lightened up with lemon,” Lari [Ladan Lari, Diesel's International Marketing Director] said, and broken with dry woody cedar notes and amber.

Diesel Only The Brave will be available in 30, 50 and 75 ml Eau de Toilette and in matching grooming products. Update: see a review of Diesel Only the Brave.

Other recent launches from Diesel: Fuel for Life Unlimited.

Also in March, John Varvatos will launch John Varvatos Artisan (shown above right), the line's third fragrance for men.

Artisan is a citrus herbal fragrance developed by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. The notes feature clementines, tangelo fruit, Mexican winter mandarin oranges, thyme, marjoram, lavendin, orange blossom, murraya (aka orange jasmine or orange jessamine), ginger, kephalis, georgywood, belambre and serenolide.

John Varvatos Artisan will be available in 75 and 125 ml Eau de Toilette. (both above via wwd) Update: see a review of John Varvatos Artisan.

wow does john varvatos artisan sound really great to me! his 1st two were ok but i have high hopes for this one. clementines, tangelo fruit, Mexican winter mandarin oranges, thyme, marjoram, lavendin, orange blossom, murraya, ginger, kephalis, georgywood, belambre and serenolide all sound like a wonderful combination to me! cant wait! its the same ad as johns ventage? im really liking the diesel ad. i want to see the bottle a little better and here a better discription of the juice. their first was ok. side bar, i loved john varvatos for women. one of my new favs and favs from last yr. did u ever test it robin? i wished u had reviewed it.

Oh boy! I assume the serenolide musk is supposed to make me, what, serene? And belambre is there to prettify me, no? Has anyone noticed that John Varvatos scents insist on introducing fancy schmancy accord/note names? Blah.

Well, what they're giving you is the actual names of the aromachemicals. I always find that sort of disconcerting — I'd rather read “saffron” than “safraleine”, but I guess you could argue that they're being more honest than most.

Jon, I did, and if it had been a tad less sweet/fruity, I probably would have liked it. I do think they did a good job on it.

The basketweave on this bottle is lovely (hope it looks as nice in person) and I like the notes too — this might suit me better than the women's.

Love that Artisan bottle and think it sounds worth a sniff for sure – all that citrusy stuff sounds pretty nice.

I'm busy being distracted by the model's abs in the Varvatos ad.

well i went to nordstrom yesterday to test this and…i found nothing special about it at all. with all that citrus in the top notes i was expecting to be wowed but sadly i wasnt. it was a big dissapiontment for me because i was really looking forward to this. i will say that as it progresses on your skin it does get alot better. the middle and bottom notes are what make it note a complete stinker for me. oh well, i guess i shouldnt have expected much since his first to were nothing special either. i still love the bottle and if someone bought it for me, i would gladly take it. i ended up buying me marc jacobs for men, i had always wanted it and i finally gave into it yesterday. i just love it!
