Perfume in the magazines: Allure, October 08

Posted by Robin on 26 September 2008 19 Comments

Allure cover, Oct 08Perfume coverage in the October issue of Allure, and please comment on any fragrance coverage you've seen in other fashion & beauty magazines lately:

Cover: Ellen Pompeo.

Scent strips: Lancome Magnifique, Absolutely Irresistible Givenchy, Gucci by Gucci, Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy.

Editorial coverage: The Beauty Reporter section includes a "Smell This" feature in which random passersby comment on the new Ralph Lauren Notorious (p. 88), a short piece comparing Calvin Klein Obsession and Secret Obsession (p. 98) and another "Smell This" for the men (Prada Infusion d'Homme, p. 100).

The Italian Job, an article about Giorgio Armani, notes that:

In preparation for his boss's appearance, one of his employees sprays Armani's favorite scent, Privé Bois d'Encens, into the air every five minutes. (p. 180)

I've been meaning to hire someone to do that for me. Best of Beauty includes a section on Scent (p. 293). Their choices include Chloé, Christian Dior Diorissimo, Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Girl, Ralph Lauren Notorious & more.

    Hi R,

I have that issue of Allure and I was floored that those 3 women actually liked Notorious. I thought it was terrible.

In regards to Viva La Juicy….. smells just like Burberry Brit. I tested it in the store and was trying to figure out where I have smelled this before and Voila! It's Burberry Brit.

    TGIF.

To my knowledge, Allure has never printed a “no” vote on any of the fragrances they use in that feature, so I assume if you say “it sucks”, you don't make it into the mag 🙂

    I still haven't smelled the VLJ, so thanks — now I needn't!

Good point. Well I'm going on record here to say “it's awful”. ;0

And, yeah, skip the Viva La Juicy. It sems like all of the new perfumes that come out lately are copy cats of previously released perfumes. What a bummer. I even experience this with niche perfumes. Not as often, but it's happening. Perfect example, Chia by Farmacia SS. Annunziata dal 1561 is a dead ringer for Pink Sugar. Not kidding. I was sampling this the other day and my daughter asked me if I was wearing her Pink Sugar.

I loved that tidbit about Armani in the magazine, but you left out one of the other staffers saying that spritzing Bois d'Encens could be the ONLY thing that employee does the entire trip! Oh well, I suppose it beats carrying P. Diddy's umbrella…

Yep, and I am testing Sublime Balkiss today which, while very well done, smells a lot like Badgely Mischka!

R, I focused on the Best in Beauty Scent category, and was surprised that the new Chloe was the big winner for best new fragrance. Hmmm…I have to think about that one. As I recall, it smelled rather generic.

    Hugs!

It's true — too lazy to type it all out! Cracked me up though. And agree, beats carrying *anything* for PD 😉

R, did not think it was a “worthy” list overall. Oh well! More for us, right?

    Have a great weekend!

I picked up the the October issue of Elle Canada on a business trip… it has Naomi Watts on the cover wearing a stunning Thierry Mugler dress with a star at the waistline. She's talking about Angel.

The issue is actually has “Fragrance Special” coverage, several pages… Still working my way through it.

Ah, I can see that comparison — but still, hate the Badgely Mischka & really like the TDC!

Thanks! Don't think I'll be able to find the Canada version, but will check to see if the US version has the same article.

Really?? They smell almost identical on me, R, I am not kidding. At first, I thought SB smelled rather Angel-like. Then it sort of smelled like Coco Mlle. But at the end of the day, it's spot-on the Badge.

Thanks Dawn, I guess I can give my Chia sample to my daughter who loves Pink Sugar. I bought the Farmacia SS sample set from luckyscent. I like the Regina from that line, but I haven't really delved into the others yet.

I am terrible, I still haven't really read the Self article. I will though. Those Kilian bottles are pretty, but too spendy for my blood. Vogue doesn't really do much fragrance coverage anymore, do they?

forgot to add that Allure gave award to Prelude to love BEST unisex??????? its one of the most unabashedly feminine fragrances he has created with Calice becker… are they breathing too much “harajuka girls” 😉

Is Kilian marketing it as unisex though? I can't remember.

No, they sure don't. I like the regular bottles better. I don't think the “artsy” ones that special.
