Tom Ford will launch White Patchouli, a new fragrance for women, this coming September. The scent...
...is seen as a counterpart to his other women's scent, Black Orchid. "For this project, I wanted to reinvent patchouli," said Ford. "I loved the idea of mixing patchouli with white florals..."
Additional notes include peony, bergamot, jasmine, rose, coriander and ambrette seed.
Tom Ford White Patchouli will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum and in matching body products. It will be exclusive to Neiman Marcus and Saks until October. (via wwd) Update: see a review of Tom Ford White Patchouli.
Thank you for this post, R ! You made my day!! :)) I cannot wait for this one, counting the days until fall , yoohoo!! 🙂
YES!!! This was THE fragrance launch I was looking forward to for the end of the year (besides the new Prada for men, which I'm sure I'll be disappointed by), especially for the advertising–YAY! I was hoping for something a little more stylized (Badu in a long straight white wig? Big white fingernails? White lips? Something!) but it's still gorgeous. I really hope this is something special and it doesn't go the conventional route that TF for Men did.
Is there anywhere to find a bigger pic of the ad yet? And when is it supposed to be released to Saks and NM–I assume before October from the wording, but I thought it wasn't supposed to launch at all before then.
I'm excited! Black Orchid (both, actually) failed to work on my skin the way I was hoping. This is gonna be exciting. I love the ad, too; Tom Ford knows his way around an ad campaign.
For curiousity's sake, what is ambrette seed? I'm seeing it a lot….
I am really looking forward to it too. Hopefully it will get an early “soft launch”.
The ad is curiously “plain” for TF, isn't it? Or maybe I'm just surprised by how tame it is after the TF for Men ads.
WWD has a bigger image of the ad.
Saks & NM are supposed to get it in September, but it could be there in soft launch by August, maybe. Who knows. And worth calling since they do get testers early!
Well, its a seed (ha) with a sort of musky odor…
Is it in the print version or the online one? I'm not a subscriber, although I really should be…working there is sort of my dream job.
needless to say, I have already saved money for a FB :)) Yes, I am going straight for the FB. As unpredictable as TF scents can be, they never disappointed me .
I assume it is in both. They do let non-subscribers see some articles, so it might be worth going over there to check.
It is good to have faith, LOL…
xD And thanks!
I would be interested in a whiff, but for me, the TF Purple Patchouli is my favorite. The ad does seem a bit bland though….
Interesting choice of model, having the Donna Summer type present a fragrance called “White Patchouli”! Trees trees chic!
That being said, I too am looking forward to this fragrance. White Orchid was too much of this and not enough of that for me – wanted desperately to be impressed but I wasn't 🙁
I only want Tuscany Leather from Tom at the moment.
Now am expecting someone in the right target market to ask who Donna Summer is LOL
But the people in the target market will likely know who Erykah Badu is…that is all that matters, right?
I have not smelled the Purple Patchouli!
Hey, I know who Erykah Badu is, I even have her album! One of them, anyway.
LLol!
*sign* I've been silently boycotting Tom Ford for awhile now. I despise his ad campaigns. But White Patchouli sounds so intriguing. Maybe if someone else buys it I can get a sniff…
Which one specifically set you over? I didn't mind his Gucci ones (even the G in the… hair…) but I agree that the ones on his site are incredibly distasteful. Especially the Tom Ford for Men ones. Blegh.
This sounds like it could be as amazing as Black Orchid :]
Oh my God! I want it! I can imagine it contrasting with Black Orchid in the same way as Black Cashmere and Chaos.
And Tom Ford never disappoints me. I love all his creations.
the whole lot of 'em for Black Orchid, only released in Europe I think. I just became so tired of his penchant for using shocking imagery that seems soulless to me, inhuman, and *not* sexy. I love sexy ads, but TF's for Men ads were anything but sexy. Actually the G in the mostly lack of hair (!!) was slightly more amusing. Or maybe he's desensitiving me… 😉 I like to silently boycott things that peeve me. This is the first one for a perfumer tho.
I SWOON AGAIN! This is going to be distractingly amazing, i can feel it! That Ad with my Girl MS. Badu! YES BABY! I think he is Channeling more Diana Ross in the advert, and it looks Sensuously Magnificent, Simply Sexy and Not over the top sexy like his Men's Frag Adverts! and i thought the Men's adverts were Disamringly sexy and over the top! which is to be expected from Mr. Ford. if he didn't try to shock at least once and a while he wouldn't be the racounteur that we know him to be!
And I LOVE Tom Ford for men and the Extreme Version, i always get compliments on it when i weat it. I think it is a masterpiece and mainly because he didn't try to overdo it and make something a la Serge Lutens or Comme Des Garcons that seems more about Eclecticism than about a fragrance smelling absolutley Delicious! maybe, It's a little linear… But it is Stunningly Beautiful Smelling! Black Orchid is Simply Overwhelmingly Perfect I feel as well! Black Orchid is truly one of the most Innovative and original smelling fragrances in the last 15 years or so and i think it deserves all the accolades it has accrued!
I am gleefully Looking forward to smelling this lovlieness that is White Patchouli and love that it is in name and scent a Counterpoint to Black Orchid… Seems like that is a new trend that is happening, Contrasting the Light and the Dark, as in the case of Lalique with Encre Noire for men and now it's release of Lalique White… could we be on the cusp of a new thing in Fragrance???? (am wearing Encre Noire Right now and have to admit it is WICKED!) Let's Hope he releases another new IP Fragrance for men and does not create another Flanker to Tom Ford For Men sometime in the near future.
By the way, haven't smelled any of his Private Blend Fragrances, yet Noir De Noir and Tobbaco Vanille sound REALLY AWESOME! need to get to Neimans to smell them! Long live Tom Ford.
I like the idea of a coriander note mixed with the patchouli and white florals. It sounds intriguing.
Of the all the private blend, PP is the only one I don't care for. Excited about WP though. BO is one of my fav scents! Hey did I just say BO? lol.
I am so ready for this frag. I am at a perfume point where I am disillusioned with alot of perfumes. When on a major smelling spree the other day, nothing caught my fancy. I am currently wearing Ormonde Jayne Woman, SL's daim Blond, fumerie turque, iris silver mist, chuergie (SP?) Le Labo Tuberose, Miller Harris Tuberose and Calyx based on my above taste any summer perfume suggestions gang?
I am SO buying this blind. 🙂
Is it just me, or is Ms. Badu channeling Diana Ross in that ad? Love it.
I am probably the only one that has never tried a single Private Blend. I 'm kind of boycotting them. Looking forward to White Patchouli though!
Let's hope!
He disappoints me all the time. And he doesn't even care! LOL…But hope this one is good.
TNK, you are very hopeful about new releases. You are the Barack Obama of scent.
Hey, but you've got a great lineup already! Do you like anything by L'Artisan or Parfums de Nicolai? A huge proportion of my summer scents are from those 2 lines.
I am so NOT buying it blind! So please, you tell me how it is when you get yours?
Oh I have Dzonka ladore heaps. I haven't tried anything from the PDN line any recommendations you always give great reviews if I never told you it's greatly appreciated. I don't respond much but read this site everyday and look forward to it. Much respect for all your time and work.
We also share the same love of Hermes un jardin sur del nil (especially the lotion) and Diptyque Philosykos
Why boycotting NST>?
“Boycotting” was probably too big a word. I just thought there were too many multiple/luxe releases when they came out, and there were 12 of them (!) and the 4 I smelled on blotters (a friend had them) were not all that impressive to me. So it was easy to just decide I wasn't going to bother with them.
If you like mango, do try PdN Eau Exotique — very nice for summer. And I'm a huge fan of L'Artisan The Pour Un Ete & L'Eau de L'Artisan for really hot weather.
Thanks for the nice words 🙂
Hmm, I like the idea of peony and patchouli; I think the watery-creamy flower will balance out the earthiness of patch, giving off more of a sandalwood impression. I suppose my nose will just have to wait to sniff!
If bergamot, jasmine, rose and patchouli are involved then it must smell really great. Too bad i have to wait a few months.
Very excited to try this, but – as I adore Black Orchid so much, I'm bracing myself to be slightly disappointed. Also, white florals scare me a little; they can easily overwhelm a scent. Nevertheless, I hope Tom goes as over the top with WP as he did with BO. Love him or hate him, we need more of his innovation in mainstream perfumery.
Could be!
I am relatively sure there is a horrid perfume out there with all 4 notes, but we'll have to hope 😉
Have a feeling this will be more woody than floral, but we'll see! And agree — we do need WAY more risk-taking & innovation.
I Know! Fragrance Gets me inspired… i try to see through the trends and all the other stuff that seems to put off so many people and look at the scent itself and have no higher Auspicious Expectations of the fragrance and rather judge it for what it is rather than what i assume or expect it should be or want it to be! unless we are noses ourselves, we can't bemoan too much those whom are such artists and create perfume, otherwise we'd be doing it ourselves… as such i hope to be a perfume nose myself one day, that's why i respect the art of perfumery and am more open to whatever is going on in the world of perfume! I am kinda i guess a Cheerleader… (except for Flankers… DEATH TO FLANKERS!) Hope that's not too much of a bad thing!?!?!?
Well, I can't agree that one can't criticize perfume unless one is a perfumer — that seems overly restrictive and not in line with how criticism “works” in any other industry (movies, wine, art, etc).
Hey, just wanted to add we got our visual schematics for July and White Patchouli is included. I think we're going to have a soft launch! (This is Nordstrom).
Good, I'd rather try it at Nordstrom!
Hmmm. I am very pleased with the ad…I get so tired of flinching whenever I see one of Ford's usual ones. I think the sharp white nails in the foreground give the image “edge”. Patchouli? I once had someone smear straight patchouli oil on me at a music festival and have lived in terror ever since, but I like the bottle with an unreasoning intensity so maybe I will give this a cautious try. I'm off to call Saks and inquire about testers!
From what I've read, it isn't really heavy on the patchouli. Haven't tried it myself yet though…
Okay, I hauled myslef over to Neiman's in Dallas and smelled this. And I was impressed. I know March over on Perfume Posse didn't care for it, but I didn't get any of the medicinal vibe that she picked up. I tried it on a card and thought it smelled…good. Warm, sweet, complicated but not too forceful. I tried it on my wrist and after about half an hour the patchouli made itself (more) evident, but even still I wasn't turned off. I can't pull off Black Orchid AT ALL, but I think I might give this one a chance!
I only smelled it really quickly, but I didn't catch the medicinal notes either…but I didn't put it on skin. Smelled mostly of very clean patch to me. Need to get a sample though…I'm not good w/ paper test strips.
I smelled this on the strip and liked it enough to try on my skin. The dry down was terrific. What I didn't anticipate was the way it lasts and continues to evolve throughout the day. Some moments, you'll notice the peony. Others, the patchouli. I've been wearing it nonstop since last week and I'm seriously considering buying the body lotion, too.
