Comme des Garcons + Stephen Jones ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 6 June 2008 30 Comments

Stephen Jones fragrance with Comme des Garcons

Comme des Garçons will follow this year's collaborative fragrance with Monocle with a new fragrance created in conjunction with British milliner Stephen Jones. According to Italian Vogue, Jones is "the maker of the most beautiful hats in the world".

Stephen Jones has described the new fragrance as "futuristic but rococo" and "a violet that's been hit by a meteorite". It was developed by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu (who also created the Monocle scent and Luxe Patchouli for Comme des Garçons), and includes notes of violet, violet leaf, 'synthesized cyber aldehyde', clove, carnation, rose, jasmine, heliotrope, gaiac wood, magma, black cumin, vetiver and amber.

Comme des Garçons + Stephen Jones will be available in 55 ml Eau de Toilette, and is due to launch in September. (first quote via stephenjonesmillinery, second quote via vogue.co.uk, third quote and additional information via wwd)

I love that it comes in a tiny hat box. I love the bottle. I love the sound of it.
I'm a little worried about the whole Comme des Garçons thing, though. A lot of their scents–practically all of their scents–just don't work for me. I believe I'll have to give this a try, though.

    Magma??

Having never actually smelled magma, I was wondering about that as well. Perhaps someone who has been to, say, Hawaii, can weigh in on what magma might smell like. Hot asphalt in the summertime, maybe?

The packaging is perfect — and since a huge percentage of their scents work for me, I'm in trouble.

Guessing it will be a more generic “hot rocks” sort of accord.

You are probably right. I do like that hot asphalt in the summertime smell, especially when it first starts to rain. Anyone know of any frags that contain that particular accord? Thanks!

I love the box–the bottle, not so much. It looks almost generic for CDG, and a little froufrou with the ribbon. That being said, it's still pretty good packaging, and anything with violet piques my interest.

I DO think that Eau de Star flanker and my favorite summer fragrance has that accord! It has been relatively unremarked on, for being such a wonderful scent. I know, I know, enough with the Angel talk girl! But then again, that's why I'm on this blog isnt' it? To join with others who can stand my perfume obsession? teehee I am SO IN on the little hatbox. . . I hope this smells fabulous!

SJ apparently designed it after an antique ink bottle…I rather like it, but it's the box & all that completes the picture.

I am terrible — I haven't even smelled Eau de Star — but I'm not the huge Angel fan myself. I will get myself to Bloomies & catch up soon…

Well, I can think of lots of fragrances with “rock” or “mineral accord”, but asphalt is not so common. I'm sure there is something but I'm not thinking of it!

Wow! Thanks for the post. I'm very curious about this, but am a bit worried about the all those floral notes (I prefer spicy, wood, and/or synthetic fragrances–cdg 2man, cdg incenses, s-ex, andy tauer's desert, to name some favorites). I suppose millinery shouldn't really be my cup of tea. But I'm imagining (really, hoping for) a whole lot of shiny flat sparkles over a floralized heart, like graphite flecks and slate binary codes floating in 3D over an idealized and pixelated violet patch. I loved the Hinoki/Monocle, and have had to stop myself from buying it more than once, so in a certain sense I hope this gives me a reason to feel good about holding back….

I have stood on cooling magma in Hawaii, back before the park rangers decided it was not a good idea to allow people to walk on new lava flows. The smell is intense – sulfurous and smoky, combined with the scent of partially melted sneaker soles. But this is a perfume accord, non? So hot asphalt in the summer is probably as close as they would dare to get. I don't think anyone wants to walk around smelling like the fires of hell (apologies to Beth of BPAL).

I don't know…a little sulfurous & smoky would be ok with me! We'll have to see what they do with it…

Hey, I'd take “shiny flat sparkles over a floralized heart, like graphite flecks and slate binary codes floating in 3D over an idealized and pixelated violet patch” — that sounds great!

This sounds excellent to me, and I love jonathon's imaginings, too! I just hope it's more affordable than CdG's latest offerings have been, but I'm sure it won't be….

Mmmm. This sounds delicious. Early contender for my autumn/winter favourite? Unfortunately, CdeG *do* generally suit me which means my wallet will be in trouble come September…
Btw – thread derail – I'm off on holiday on Monday – 2 weeks in California (one at Lake Tahoe, one staying just outside Santa Cruz). Any recommendations for my duty free purchase to kick my holiday off? Am taking with me Kenzo 'Summer' and Guerlain 'Voile d'ete' but there's always room for one more (currently thinking about purchasing Diorissimo)…

Hey, lucky you — Santa Cruz is great fun. I've never been to Tahoe.

No duty free advice in particular. I guess you could check out the Kenzo 7:15 in Bali? My experience in duty free has always been that I could buy cheaper elsewhere, so unless it's a “duty free exclusive” I don't see the point.

Something called “Fires of Hell” or “Asphalt in July after the Rains” will be my next choice for a bespoke perfume. And CB would definitely be the perfumer on that one.

I just thought about this article posted by Robin back in June. I remember thinking that I can't wait till… September! Yes it's now! So I was trying to google this scent, I guess it is not here in the US yet. I read on mimifroufrou that there will be only 6000 bottles produced and it will go for $146. So that means I am in trouble: I love the bottle/packaging terribly, it might be harder to find than I thought, everything fro CdG works for me perfectly and with no exceptions so this probably will too. And then of course what? Then it will be unavailable/sold out of course like everything I love.

I really wouldn't worry: 6000 is an awful lot of bottles. Just for some comparison, when L'Artisan does 2000-3000, they tend to be around for at least a year, sometimes much more. Anyway, it is now available in the UK (Dover Street Market) but is not here just yet.
