We're not Procter & Gamble…

Posted by Robin on 16 October 2007 4 Comments

What do Daphne Guinness and Stephen Jones have in common - apart from their English eccentric style? They are both launching first fragrances under the auspices of Adrian Joffe, who heads up the company of his partner Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and has developed for her a fragrance empire.

The idea of Joffe as the beauty industry's new prince of perfume sounds unlikely. But, as Joffe says, there is an increasing demand for niche marketing in this area where big does not always seem so beautiful.

I once read a Tatler article about Guinness where she said she wore her own mix (it sounded like she just lavishly applied single oils) of gardenia, tuberose and patch oils – and a lot of it. She even admitted a lot of her friends said she reeked – I forget exactly what of but it wasn't nice, like squatters or something unwashed.

Had to Google Daphne Guinness — but now that I've seen some pictures, she obviously has a rather wacky fashion sense, so I can imagine the fragrance!

Daphne invariably pisses me off when she talks (…has anyone seen her interview on BBC's documentary on Haute Couture? arrggh!!) but I can't help but be fascinated from time to time with her fashion choices.

Aha, now I'll have to look for her on YouTube, thanks!
