Demeter Play-Doh & other perfume news

Posted by Robin on 1 May 2006 18 Comments

Demeter Play-Doh fragrancePlay-Doh celebrates its 50th birthday this year, and Hasbro has teamed up with Demeter to offer a limited edition fragrance to mark the event:

When you open a can of PLAY-DOH compound, you are instantly transported back to childhood. What better way to celebrate the 50th birthday than by bottling the scent for adults everywhere to enjoy as a reminder of their youth.

The fragrance is available now at demeterfragrance for $19 and will be at Sephora & Ulta later in the year. (via yahoofinance, link no longer working, sorry!)

In related news, Jose Cuervo has released Angel's Mist, a limited edition fragrance to tie in with its new Gran Centenario Tequila. The fragrance was created by perfumers at Firmenich and is described as "a citrus burst of sparkling lime blended with 100 percent blue agave Gran Centenario Plata Tequila and alluring notes of oakwood." (via nypost, link no longer working, sorry!)

Columnist Bethan Cole of the UK Times Online tries to recreate a few of her favorite perfumes at the Cotswold perfumery course.

At last, a fragrance that will *intend* to evoke Play-Doh! We've had so many before that, with the faintest suggestion of almond, have sent all of us who grew up in the States into paroxysms of childhood nostalgia without meaning to.

Play-Doh? There is no way I want to smell like Play-Doh. Yes, I remember that smell as a kid. But as a cologne?? No way!

    – btw – I had recently ordered like 14 samples of asst. Demeter's. I was very disappointed with every one of them. And definitely don't ever get 'Never Lonely'. No kidding, it smells just like a bad case of b.o. It should be re-named 'Always Lonely'. It's awful! ugh.

LOL — and without the extra cost of People of the Labyrinths…

I like the smell of Play Doh…or at least, the bits of it that I get from other perfumes. Not sure I'd wear it on its own.

There are a few Demeters I really like, a few I don't, and untold numbers that I still haven't smelled. What on earth was Never Lonely supposed to smell like?

I think I'll pass on the Play-Doh, but the Cuervo stuff sounds interesting! The notes make it sound masculine, but the name Angel's Mist sounds unisex at best. I LOVE the smell of blue agave tequila so I may have to check this one out!

I'm not a big Demeter fan but I am very excited about Play-Doh. You may recall that this was Raincheck's idea. She wrote to Demeter and asked them to produce a Play-Doh scent and they agreed to do it.

I am excited by the Play-doh scent, but Yich, Cuervo! It gives Tequila a bad name. It's so coarse and horrible.

Ah, Play-Doh: it's both the dreaded outcome and the mysteriously addictive quality of Hypnotic Poison for me. But what a wonderful, “it's about time” idea for an explicit Play-Doh fragrance.

What I'm super keen on is the tequila perfume – you've no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to figure that out. That's half the appeal of a really good tequila, that beautiful floral bouquet you smell as you go in for a sip. Finally! I'm quite tickled to hear this news!

The name is not a good fit (to my mind) with the product…and I would say Angel's Mist sounds feminine. At least, can't picture my own dh saying he is wearing “Angel's Mist”. Let me know if you see it anywhere, I can't find anything about it online!

We have the opposite reaction…I want to try the Cuervo but don't much care about the Play Doh…already have my People of the Labyrinths for Play Doh 😉

As I said above, do let me know if you see it — I have no idea where it will be sold or when.

I'm glad someone else pointed out the similarity between Hypnotic Poison and play-doh, thought maybe it was just me. Also Smell This long long time ago did a play-doh fragrance and it was wonderful, I hope this can compare to that. They also did a fragrance called Fluffy Pillow and I never can find anything to even nearly compare to that, no idea why they discontinued it 🙁

People of the Labyrinths also has a serious playdoh component, and I know there are others that aren't coming to mind right away. I like playdoh 🙂
