Smell-o-vision in Japan

Posted by Robin on 13 April 2006 9 Comments

Last year saw a chocolate-scented premiere of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, but now movie-goers in Japan will experience fragranced entertainment on a new level:

A new service from a major telecommunications company, NTT Communications Corp., will synchronize seven different smells to parts of "The New World," starring Colin Farrell.

A floral scent accompanies a love scene, while a mix of peppermint and rosemary is emitted during a tear-jerking scene. Joy is a citrus mix of orange and grapefruit, while anger is enhanced by a herb-like concoction with a hint of eucalyptus and tea tree.

Huh. Unless Colin Farrell is crying over the lack of candy canes and herb gardens in the new world, I don't get the association of peppermint and rosemary with sadness.

This weird. I wonder how it will work. Just think about what we know about the people react to different scents. It might be fun to try but I don't know if I'd want to have it with every movie!

    (Hi Robin :-) *waves*)

I can see it now….some will be sneezing, coughing, getting headaches, – some saying Oooooh how nice, others going YUCK!

2nd both of your comments…guessing this is more interesting in theory than in practice.

I wonder what horror movies would smell like. Fear? That would be sort of unfortunate, as fear probably smells a lot like b.o. yikes. I don't get the relationship between sadness, mint and rosemary either.

What I would really like is a way to neutralize the perfume of others in the theater, LOL!

I agree that it sounds more interesting in theory than in practice.

I recall that fragrance was used in Broadway's Aida to recreate the pharaon daughter's bath scene, and believe me it was a very interesting effect.

However, in that occasion, a watery accord was used that perfectly matched the action. I don't know how these guys will relate sadness to mint and rosemary. I guess it will be worth watching … and smelling anyway!

    Regards, R.

How interesting…will have to google that & see what I can dig up. Perhaps there is more of this going on than I knew.
