Listen to Laurice Rahme of Bond no. 9 and perfumer Maurice Roucel talking about "The Smell of Success" on WNYC radio. Scroll down to the third segment; it is about 26 minutes long. Much of the discussion centers on the Bond line of fragrances, but there are also some interesting tidbits about more general perfume-related matters. Many thanks to the anonymous person who sent me the link!

Well, that was a real treat, thank you so much, R! Roucel talking! *swoon* 😀
That interviewer is a little patronizing, isn't he: “So, Maurice, what do you do? You blend scents, don't you?” Jeez!
What really cracked me up is that the program rather gives you the idea that you might walk into a Bond store and Maurice Roucel will be there to mix up a custom scent for you. LOL! In my dreams.
Imagine that…*daydreams*
The interviewer knew nothing about perfume…too bad…missed opportunity. I laughed at Mme Rahme too…she acted as if people who lived in the neighborhoods that are represented in her line bought Bond 9 as they do eggs, milk, bread! And the “aspirational” clap-trap…if I can't live in Chelsea I can smell like it! Alors. Oh well…I've yet to find a Bond 9 I like anyway. K
I enjoyed Maurice Roucel comments and I 'm pleasantly surprised he 's the nose behind these scents but I agree with KeviSantal, the NYC neighborhood thing is just marketing crap lol –
Chelsea Flowers is my favorite Bond scent, it 's a pretty white floral, not a masterpiece perfume but it works nice for me.
So true — and he completely misunderstood what Bond does in terms of “custom scents”. It made parts of the show kind of comical.
He did not do all of them, in fact, only 3 that I know of: Broadway Night, New Haarlem, and Riverside Drive. She has used a number of different noses.
it makes sense he did not do them all, would you have any idea who did Chelsea Flowers? I know this scent gets bad reviews and it smells generic but I really enjoy it.
That one was by Laurent LeGuernec.
thank you NowSmellThis. I see that Laurent Leguernec also created Sarah Jessica Parker 's Lovely. I wonder if Chelsea Flowers smells generic because it 's made of generic synthetics or if it 's really made of high grade ingredients…
Thanks so much R!!!
That was really funny for awkward reasons. Poor Leonard Lopate, such a smart guy, and yet was clearly totally befuddled on this topic. I had no idea that Bond did custom scenting and that Roucel was the perfumer. Not that I could afford it (or would want to), but who knew?
Yes, and several of the other Bonds as well. No idea on the Chelsea Flowers…
🙂
T, Bond has always blended their existing fragrances to suit individual customers…I think they do this in all the Bond boutiques. In other words, you can get a mix of say, Eau de New York & Chelsea Flowers done up. I am 99% sure that that is all they are talking about, and that Lopate just misunderstood the press materials. Hopefully someone will correct me if I 'm wrong…
