Posted by Robin on 21 October 2005 8 Comments

There is an interesting article from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) about efforts to manage the over-harvesting of agarwood in Papua New Guinea.

Interesting about the agarwood. I never even realised that it came from Papua as well. In the Japanese incense that I use, it usually comes from Indonesia and Vietnam.

B, don't know if you saw this article as well:

One of the things I found interesting was the claim that it actually helped asthma, as one of the reasons I no longer burn incense is that my son has mild breathing problems.

Great article—thanks for the link. Also, I think agarwood/aloeswood is also known as oud or oudh.

Yes, oudh, aloeswood, agarwood, all the same thing. This article (and the other link I posted in the comment above) makes me wonder how often it is replaced by synthetics in perfume.

Thanks for the article link, very interesting.

Here is a link to one of my favourite Japanese incense sites with an excellent article about agarwood/aloeswood. Also some nice photos taken by Nakata san.

Thanks Barry. If you happen back through, I'd love to know which of their incense sticks you think are best — although many of them are way outside of my price range!

The best one for the price containing aloeswood is Syukohkoku. For a gentle everyday incense, I like Kobunboku.
