Jean Paul Gaultier to launch viral campaign & other perfume news

Posted by Robin on 6 September 2005 6 Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier will launch a viral campaign to "bring people together" on September 10. On his website, users will be able to create and share graphics, and even fragrance, so to speak:

'The Fragrance Alchemist' is a film directed by Alain Escalle about a young prince who lives in the streets of a vertical megalopolis and has decided to create his perfect perfume. Users can add their personal creative touch by creating a "virtual" fragrance and passing it on to their partner or friend. (via digitalbulletin)

And thank you to Katie for the link to this article in the LA Times (link no longer active, sorry!) in which columnist Dan Neil asks young men to please, lay off the cologne.

An online viral campaign, so a virtual viral campaign, I guess!

Interesting. Robin, you might like to know that Mugler's Alien was launched in Galeries Lafayette this week. The display is at the centre of the beauty store and is in the form of a giant elongated white pyramid with Alien emblazoned on the side in purple. There's even a violinist alongside the promotional team!

The scent is pretty nice – I just tried a sample card – a kind of mildly peppery white floral with a hint of orange blossom, magnolia. Reminded me of Diptyque's Ofresia, which is no bad thing. Not exactly as earth-shaking as Angel but more complex than it first appears. I liked it!

Thanks for letting me know! Mugler really goes all out on the marketing. Check this out:

Have a sample of the Alien but haven't tried it yet — hope to get to it this weekend. Ofresia I could live with, but the reaction on the fragrance boards so far has been less than glowing!
