Perfume news: Diptyque sold, Tom Ford signs with Estee Lauder

Posted by Robin on 17 April 2005 9 Comments

Diptyque, the privately owned niche fragrance house, has been bought by London-based Manzanita Capital. (via abc-luxe)

Tom Ford has signed a multi-year collaborative deal with Estee Lauder. He will create a range of products under the EL label for late 2005/early 2006, then will launch a separate Tom Ford line, including fragrances, for EL in late 2006. (via prnewswire)

V, I assume you mean the Tom Ford, but tell me why it will be interesting? I live under a rock (a nice smelling rock, but a rock all the same) and know virtually nothing about him.

Lol…… you are so funny…I say interesting because the whole Tom Ford/Gucci drama wound up in the hands of the Estee Lauder Companies.

EL, which has picked up almost every independent makeup/fragrance line since 1990 (Bliss, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Stila, etc) seems to branching out with “new” lines, the first one being American Beauty (Ashley Judd spokesmodel) and now Tom Ford. Although Tom Ford will be marketed as “Tom Ford for Estee Lauder”, it will be interesting to see how they will position this brand—as a true limited edition, or as more of a pilot to see how well Tom (and his products) will be received.

The whole fragrance/cosmetic industry is just so interesting…

Yes…the one bonus to EL owning everything is that it makes the outlet store worth visiting! I missed the whole Tom Ford/Gucci drama, of course, but was wondering the same as you: are they asking him to develop some EL products right away as a trial run before they invest in his own line.

I think it is called The Company Store (?) They have all the EL brands, but the quality varies…usually some old, beat up Stila stuff, but lots of good MAC products, sometimes even the brushes, lots of Origins, Clinique, Bobbi Brown. Tons of those “gift with purchase” sets that didn't get sold at the department store. They tend to be in the Tanger outlet centers if you have one near you.

Oy…just what I needed to hear! **Races to google “Tanger”**

And I hope that company leaves Diptyque alone, because I really love that line. Unless they specifically would please pressure Diptyque to come out with a Tam Dao shower gel. I love the Etro Sandalo, but it's big bucks ($45 for shower gel!) and the Diptyques are much better priced ($28).

T, Diptyque makes at several of my favorite perfumes, so I am in complete agreement. A Tam Dao shower gel would be lovely, for that matter, I just hope they'll release something new. Tam Dao & Jardin Clos were both released in 2003, and I don't think they've done anything since then. Get on the ball, guys!
