A few perfume wishes for 2006

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2005 42 Comments

Way back in March, I discovered 100% Love by S-Perfume, and was immediately captivated by the unusual combination of rose, chocolate, incense and fruit. At the time, I said I would love to see an Eau de Parfum version with a bit more depth and staying power. Lo and behold, the new, more concentrated strength will be released in time for Valentine's Day, complete with a spiffy hot pink leather case.

Then earlier this week, I had my little rant about the difficulty of obtaining samples, and discovered via a comment that Sephora is giving up those nasty foam samples and returning to glass vials — spray vials, no less. What more could one ask for?

Well, of course, I can think of a few things. Just in case the perfume gods are feeling benevolent again…

Agent Provocateur Menage a Trois & more perfume news

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2005 11 Comments

Agent Provocateur will release Menage a Trois in January. I thought this would be a new fragrance, but it turns out to be a trio of travel sized Eau de Parfum bottles of their signature perfume. Lovely packaging though!

The New York Times has an article about perfumer Lyn Harris of Miller Harris. She loves fragrance, and she loves her Swiffer mop.

The next big sale at Floris starts Monday, January 3.

The next addition to the Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo line will be Fico di Amalfi, a fragrance with "tangerine, bergamot, lemon, grapefruit and cedar; a heart of fig nectar, pink pepper and jasmine petals, and a drydown of fig wood, musk and cedar wood." (via Women's Wear Daily)

The Smell Culture Reader is due to be published in May 2006, and includes articles by Mandy Aftel, Oliver Sacks, Luca Turin, John Steele and Alan Hirsch. Thanks to Anya for the link!

Perfume: the best of 2005

Posted by Robin on 30 December 2005 46 Comments

I tried very hard to create a list of the top 10 fragrances released this year, but my brain, unfortunately, just doesn't work that way. No sooner did I add one perfume to the list, then I started to think of others that might, perhaps, be just as good. I finally gave up. Here is a more idiosyncratic list of some of the good & bad in perfume from 2005…

Issey Miyake L’Eau Bleue D’Issey Pour Homme fragrance review

Posted by Marlen on 29 December 2005 11 Comments

Issey Miyake L'Eau Bleue d'Issey fragrance for men

Issey Miyake’s 2nd men’s fragrance, a follow-up to 1994’s L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme, smells more like something that might have been created for Comme des Garcons than Issey Miyake. A far cry from the citrus-packed L’Eau of the early 90’s, L’Eau Bleue is an unusual mélange of mandarin orange, lemongrass, rosemary, elemi, star anise, nasturtium, may rose absolute, ginger absolute, palmarosa, patchouli, sandalwood, and musk mallow. It was created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier…
