Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2025!

Posted by Robin on 17 May 2025 264 Comments

Today, our sixteenth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). We're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.

If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it.

Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

Or, as always, just talk about something else.

Note: top image is detail from Great tit, Japanese robin (Shijukara komadori), Kitagawa Utamaro 喜多川歌麿, Edo period ca. 1790, via RISD Museum, Gift of Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. 38.009, public domain.

    Printemps Blanc sample

    Outside a bakery,
Fresh flowers wave in the breeze
    Early soft spring day.

You’ll have to pronounce it bake-ree to get the correct number of syllables in the first line 😀 This is a lovely fragrance, a recent sample I received. I wasn’t expecting the gourmand note.

Happy Saturday, all. We are off to celebrate our first (of three) grandchild turning TWO! Printemps Blanc is very light so it’s perfect for the day.

Happy Saturday! The bedtime perfume theme inspired one more haiku – bringing my total to 10. 🫢 Definitely went overboard this year! As suggested, I’ll post each one in a separate comment. I’m leaving out the perfume names for now, turning it into a bit of a guessing game. I’ll reveal them later today or tomorrow. So, one haiku = one perfume.

        Ding ding ding!
Inspired by this trivia: “Jean-Paul Guerlain noted in an interview with Elle Magazine that he created Samsara with a muse in mind. “I met a woman named Décia de Pauw, a wonderful horsewoman. I fell instantly in love. I had one desire: to offer this woman a perfume that would reveal her own intimacy, her unique sensuality. She liked sandalwood and jasmine, so I made her a perfume named Samsara, which is Sanskrit for ‘wheel of life.” “

      Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours

      Its description on NG website:

      ELEGANT / TEXTURED / TACTILE

A deep & textured perfume, that evocatively encases the skin like soft velvet suede. A tobacco atmosphere supported by notes of rum, cistus labdanum, incense & immortelle – the everlasting flower.

Inspiration – Soft as a gentlemen’s leather glove.

Speaking of Scherrer. When I was at the Osmotheque, the director showed me what looked like a huge factice of Scherrer 2, about 24″ tall. But this thing was about 1/3 full of perfume! She had no idea of why or what or where it was from, but agreed it was a marvel. I cannot recall exactly, but I think it had been donated to the archive.

    Ode to my delicious breakfast.

    So many perfumes
Notes I love but none compare
    To morning bacon

Today I am wearing Estee Lauder Beautiful. I found my tiny bottle online and don’t know it’s age but it smells very vintage-y.
It’s much cooler today, and we had a windstorm last night that knocked out my mom’s power. Fortunately it was back on within a few hours but I am always nervous about having to pack her up and head to a hotel.

My head is too foggy this morning to create a haiku, sorry. I am wearing ELDO Une Amourette Roland Mouret. I almost bought a bottle of this in Paris, but my budget was stretched already with my pick of ELDO Remarkable People. Fortunately, the SA had been watching me waffle over the two scents and included several samples of Une Amourette in the bag.

Hello NST! Gosh I have been busy lately, but still trying to keep up with people’s comments. I’m trying Azzaro Chrome EdT from the set of used samples I bought at a flea market outside Paris last year. I think it’s trying to smell a little metallic (from the name), but there’s something sweet in there too. It smells like it might have gone off a bit, but I don’t know what it’s supposed to smell like. So, I finished the sample and will wash it all off after my shower.

No haiku for this one; I might try later on this weekend. I’m drinking a tea that I bought yesterday–Ahmad Paradise Blend, which has an orange blossom aroma. It’s good! I wanted to get a small size since I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but they only had these giant tins so I took a chance and bought it.

I’d intended to be prepared with a haiku or two, then forgot! I’ll be back later if inspiration strikes, meanwhile I’ve done some much-needed housework perfumed with a couple of my recent purchases. I’ve got Coreterno’s Mystic Sugar on one sleeve and Guerlain’s Ambre Samar on the other.
Ambre Samar is very nice, there’s nothing unique about it, it’s just a lovely sweet amber.

Vanilla Diorama? Although, according to Fragrantica, it was released in 2021, and there were some Demachy scents in 2022.

“Known for his fine palate, Christian Dior was a true epicurean who was honored by the famous Parisian restaurant Maxim’s, with a dessert created just for him: the Diorama Gourmand. Vanilla Diorama eau de parfum is a vanilla perfume that evokes the dessert’s delightful lightness and contrasts, echoing the generous chiffon skirt of the “Diorama” silhouette drawn by the Couturier-Perfumer.”

Just used some Ulta rewards points for a bottle of Coco Mademoiselle Intense and Lush Rose Jam body wash, the Sleepy body wash and lotion and still have over $100 worth of points to use. I will bank those for later this year.

Chanel by far but then there’s Shalimar, and Nahema….overall, the Guerlainade just doesn’t smell great on me. I get headaches from makeup-y or sweet violets and many Guerlain perfumes seem to have a lot violet. Perfect for what I know is a favorite pretty note for many.

What? No (old school) Dior? 😉

I think in my perfume collection Guerlain edges out Chanel. But Dior beats both of them since I have 5 different Poison perfumes.

In the order that I got them: Midnight Poison, Poison Girl EdT, Poison Girl EdT, Pure Poison, and the current version of the OG Poison.

The current version of Poison (purple bottle) smells pretty good to me. I was wondering if I had any bad perfume karma associated with it, and am quite happy to say that isn’t the case.

Last night right before I went to bed I realized I had a couple more FB Dior scents that I forgot to mention: Dune and Higher.

So that brings my tally to 7 bottles.

@socks, when I think of Poison, I think of an Alice Cooper song! Or the glam metal band from the 1980’s.

No energy for haiku this weekend but I enjoy all the others.

I am a whirling dervish of housework currently . Son is coming with his fiancée next weekend. Though he is an adult, his room is more or less how it was in high school – a mess. I am going to do some basic straightening, dusting and freshen the linens but tempted to leave it about the same. He refuses to let me purge his things – which I understand – but then HE needs to do a purge. I did a partial purge years ago, finding size 14 boy’s jeans and items like that I quickly sent to GoodwilI. I think eventually I am going to have to adopt my mother’s strategy of boxing up her adult children’s things and delivering them to the owner. Luckily my shipment has only been a few boxes over decades. Fiancée needs to know what she is in for . .

Wearing a sample of Scents of Wood Vanilla In Armagnac. I can’t seem to get enough vanilla. I am tempted by this type of vanilla with synthetic/woody notes but then wonder if I need a more straight-ahead like Tihota. No rush, will keep vetting.

Hope the severe weather in USA isn’t endangering some of you out there.

I have not heard yet however, last year I had heard it would be jasmine and several said rose. It turned out to be jasmine so wondering if there is any way it would be rose this year. It has been coming out the middle of September so we will see. I don’t think jasmine was very popular since they quickly went to the discount sites.

There was no more space in the original thread, Glannys but yes, it’s Vanilla Diorama, sorry if it wasn’t his last, I went by Google which lists Sauvage elixir, but as it isn’t a collection privée for which he created two last perfumes Tobacolor and VD.

I went back and forth with my good friend ChatGPT and we came up with the following for us NST lovelies:

    Words trace fragrant trails,
friendship blooms in notes and threads—
    bottled memories.

    💗

I kept meaning to weigh in on the one fragrance I will apply at night. It’s Nicolai’s edc, Haute Provence.

And in other randomness, when I was googling NST to pop in today, the following came up as the first listing. Never heard of the perfume or the house, but the packaging is really fun. It’s a super long link, sorry! Anyone know anything about it?:

Today is the calm after the storms here in Colorado. Yesterday I had rain, wind, lightning, and pea-sized hail, plus a Code Red weather alert on my cell phone. No tornadoes in my area, thankfully.
